Overall a solid choice for meat lovers. I wanna say that the appetizers were a bit lacking, the hummus needed more tahini and salt, the salad needed more lemon and arayes could have used more spice. So I think now is the time I finally unpack and just say how I feel. For the last several months, I have not been very happy with Yelp. It's not just that I had one review removed despite that being from a place I've actually eaten their food from, but that the algorithm has used some of my other reviews in the past to make me look misleading, whether it be adding in information I did not add myself, switched the location of where I had reviewed a place, all of it has led me to distrust Yelp throughout the rest of 2025. I couldn't write another review up until now because every time I had even consider doing so, it felt awkward. I hate having to start a new year off like this, but over the last few weeks, I've had to work on letting go of my anger and confront my issues. Maybe this review can be a way to help with that. End emotional rant. Let's get into Kanoon, because oh boy do I have a lot of thoughts to unpack from here. So how did I actually come to dine at Kanoon? Actually, mom had found this spot and she described the people working there as nice people. We were actually going to go to Texas Roadhouse until we saw the lines inside and went here instead. This visit was more for the sake of mom's emotional well-being than anything else. Parking was a bit of a tight stunt, but as long as you can find somewhere to park you should be okay. Now, upon entering, you have to wait to be seated. Of course, because I parked the car while my mother crutched her way over to a table, I was able to just come in and tell the employee who I was with and head on over to that table. Decor and thematically, it's pleasant to look at. There's a bull head on one of the walls with a Kanoon license plate nearby. Two arcade machines are stowed away near the bathrooms. Bathrooms were nice too I guess. There's two areas where you can be seated at. At one point while we were eating, we are featured a show of dry ice at our tables. It's like fog on our own tables. They do take it back after a short while. Like I said, it's nice to look at. So now onto the food. There was the Lotus Shake, the Hummus Plate, a tray of slaws, mom had the lamb, and I had the smoked meat starter. Oh, and the crepeholics crepe was the dessert. Food is served on exotic plates and on wood. The lamb my mom got was served on a cracked wooden plate that was on its way out, so even though she did still like the lamb, she didn't finish the salad that came with it. As for me, the meat on my platter tasted fine at first, but the more I ate, the more of a story it told. The more I ate, the blander it got. Not even some extra pepper that was available at my table could save the meat. While I did still finish it, it was not without a struggle. The fries were at least crispy, and the cheese on top helped with the flavor a little. Also, the presentation was top-notch. The hummus plate was another item that was presented well, and if the main dish was as good as the hummus, I would probably have added another star to the review. But yes, the hummus was in fact a good appetizer. The chickpeas that topped it were just right. The Lotus Shake was probably the best thing I had of the night. It's a shake topped with whipped cream, a Biscoff cookie, cookie crumbs, and one of those cookie straws that are this one treat I can't think of the name at the moment. The milkshake had a caramel flavor to it, and mixed with the whipped cream was divine. The dessert was a little underwhelming if I have to be honest. You have the same caramel Biscoff flavor you did with the Lotus Shake in this crepe, and the chocolate was more of a milk chocolate. Funny thing, I had actually recently learned how to make custard using dark chocolates, and just from having my own custard alone I can tell you that this crepe would have been better complimented if a dark chocolate was used in place of the milk chocolate. This place isn't really anything to write home about. The only reason I even knew this place existed before was because this place had tons of fake Google reviews in its opening weeks. I hope Google has begun cracking down on that, but I had already lost my trust in Yelp before, so I'm going to call that even and just rate this place based on my experience here. Incredible atmosphere, service, and food. I have never been one for lamb chops but tried theirs and it's the best I've ever had -- no gaminess whatsoever YUM. Meat was good, think it lacked the tiniest bit of a bolder taste but so tasty still. I loved everything I tried, it's def worth at try AT LEAST once. They hosted an awesome fire show that they only have on weekends . It's been a minute since I first visited and I will soon go back for their awesome apps, rice, lamb chops, and brisket-- even their slushi like type of limeade ... just excellent all around . I noticed Kanoon on my way down to an event in Naugatuck from the highway. A few friends wanted to eat after the event and lo and behold, we ended up going here. Kanoon is a hidden gem in Waterbury, CT serving smoked halal meats. It is said that it is an American BBQ with a Middle Eastern twist. The restaurant has two sides with one as a cafe while the other is the dining area. They have a huge menu selection making it hard to choose what to eat. No matter what the choice, everything is delicious! I especially loved the mushrooms mixed with hummus and meat on pita bread. Kofta is my go-to order and it came with rice and can be made of two ways and a salad. Service is 100% above and beyond. Probably even more so. The staff is always looking for opportunities to improve and grow their customer base. The manager also takes their time getting to know their customers! We visited in the evening and service was incredibly slow. It probably took an hour for the appetizers to come and 2 hours for the main food to arrive. However, my husband and I and I agreed that the food was delicious and worth it. In total, we were there 3 hours. They had a "fire show" which they encourage everyone to watch - it's basically someone waving around the blow torches and his arms as he torches some meat. Not much of a show with tricks. Despite this, all the staff and service stops when they have this one-man show. Our servers kept telling us that our food, dessert, etc would not arrive until the show is over. Which was ridiculous because he was just cooking meat for the "show" and not for people waiting on their food. On initial ordering, they also told us that the entrees "from the grill" would take over an hour to make. This was trying to push us to order their smoked meats. However, the person in our group who ordered an entree "from the grill" got their food first ! Felt unfair and deceptive because I would have loved to order an additional entree and not be discouraged to order from that side of the menu. Once the food came, it was delicious though. The hummus had great flavor though it didn't come with enough naan - we had to ask for more. The BBQ chicken came sizzling and tasted pretty good but I expected it to he more crispy instead of soggy. The smoked beef brisket was incredibly tender. The mango mojito was ok - too many bits and particles in it and not a strong mango flavor. Really loved the biscoff crepe dessert. Ambiance was pretty modern and the bathroom had nice decor. It was clean overall. Overall I would want to try coming here again when visiting but wouldn't go out of my way because of the long wait - especially with kids who were tired and hungry. read more

I passed this place on the highway before it was open. I looked it up and knew I had to go once they opened, but knew I wanted to come with a group so took a bit for me to get here. I'm a bit of a bbq snob and love middle eastern food and love interesting fusion so I was super excited for it. We came on a random Tuesday night and even though the website said reservations strongly recommended the place was empty. Immediately they brought out some salads, relishes and potatoes which was a nice change up from standard pre-meal freebies. Everything we had was fair, nothing outstanding but nothing bad. I personally ordered the brisket which was well flavored but INCREDIBLY lean with virtually no fat so needed a good bit of bbq sauce. The smoked rice was very nice. Service was a bit slow considering the fact that the restaurant was mostly empty and it was a weeknight, I'd hate to see what a hopping weekend was like. I'm not saying I won't come back, especially for the middle eastern parts of the menu, but next time I'm after bbq, I'd probably look elsewhere. read more

For starters, I will say that the meat is very tender and smoked well but that's the only positive thing I have to say The meat lacks flavor and needs to be seasoned. It has a very high fat content. I got the beef shank which they charge by the pound and mention that it may be over or under because it's by the pound. This implies a slight variation. What I was not expecting was for meat that is $40 a pound to come out to $52. That's more than a slight variation . A chef who is cooking and serving this meat all day should be able to better estimate or even weigh 1 pound of meat so that the customer knows what to expect. And much of this 1 lb was fat. If this meat was flavorful and delicious, I would have no problem paying more, but to pay more for food that wasn't even good is a shame They do a fire show for birthdays and celebrations. Just note that during this time they completely cut off the lights to the entire restaurant so while you are enjoying your meal, you may suddenly be in darkness while they celebrate the other parties. It would be better to dim the lights instead, so that people who are eating can still see their food There were other factors that went wrong during this visit. We had to wait a while, even though we made a reservation. It took a long time after being seated to get service which is not the fault of the waiter, but a lack of communication between staff. And I also received a dirty glass for my drink. All in all, they do a lot to hype up this restaurant and the smoked meat experience is a nice display and very tender. The food was also very good the brisket smoked was amazing as well as the mango mojito. The service could be better. The server told us it will be an hour wait for the grilled items including steaks and kebabs and for smoked items it would be quicker. A flawless experience dining on a Thursday night. The inside looks great and is super spacious . The restaurant was clean and had many decorations that made it a festive environment. When we arrived, we were immediately seated, and our order was taken. We got the mixed grill, chicken wings, and the smoked starter. Everything was cooked to perfection. Kanoon has been on our bucket list since they opened, and we're so happy we finally checked it out! We heard it's crazy on the weekends, so we visited on a Monday night, which was a great choice because it was super chill. The staff were so attentive and friendly! All of the meats were excellent, with the short rib being my favorite - it literally fell right off the bone! The presentations here are impressive and definitely match the quality of the meal you're receiving. I didn't know they had such unique desserts too! Yes. Yes. Yes. That's how I feel about this establishment. It is 100% a yes, you have to go and have a dining experience here. That is exactly what it is, an experience. Let me say this, in my humble opinion, Halal cuisine is one of the best in the world. It is unprocessed and healthy food, with very strict guidelines. You can taste that in every bite. They consume no alcohol and so the drink menu is full of wonderful mocktails tastefully selected to match with any of their menu items. First impression. Very VERY clean. I sat down and immediately noticed they polish their silverware. You could see your beautiful reflection, it was so shiny. The seating was lush and soft and tastefully designed for such a large restaurant, which, I felt was modern chic incorporating rich color and fabrics. You can tell they pay attention to the small details too. Everyone is greeted with a smile here, as well the chance to take a selfie next to a large bull's head and hanging art. Beyond the entrance, right in the front foyer is a large allotted spot for a fire show with plenty of viewing space. It showcased brightly colored ovens, a long cutting board, flame torches and other accessories behind glass. It definitely makes anyone who enters intrigued at what might happen behind glass. BUT FIRST THE FOOD. We tried several appetizers, including mushrooms, hummus with meat, and a spinach /cheese app (borak)wrapped in crispy fillo. They came out quickly and were accompanied with a family style house salad, a small dish of pickled cabbage and tomato relish ( or chutney... which I used throughout dinner on different bites, YUM) and herbed baby potatoes. The vinegarette was simple yet balanced and coated the greens well on the salad. The hummus was very smooth...tahini forward, meat was diced small and placed in the center with drizzled oil and it came with a puffed Naan style bread for dipping. The borak was cheese pull worthy and so good. Once again, served with a smile and super fresh. Dinner arrived and it smelled so good! We got Kufta Kebobs, chopped marinated meat thats then grilled. The seasoning on these were perfect. I chose smoked rice as a side but you could choose two other items, plain rice or bulgar wheat rice. Very flavorful. We split this because ofcourse we wanted dessert. It was tough to choose! Everything looked so good. We got a Dubai chocolate crepe, baklava and I wish I remembered the name of the third because it was my favorite, shredded fillo wrapped around a sweet cheese, covered in a very light honey and pistachio crumble. I ate most of that amongst our group because it was THE BEST. BUT WAIT, this was dinner, dessert, and A SHOW! A voice that sounded like Morgan Freeman came over the speakers and began telling a story of fire and food. Immediately all the guests got up and walked to the front foyer. And then the magic happened. Fire, fire-dancing and a sword. Slow cook meat was lit on fire and then the bones removed...they just slipped out. He touched the tender meat and it fell apart. All the families watched in awe. The children were smiling, the chef was smiling, my guests were smiling, I was smiling. It felt so magical. A large platter was ready with more pickled vegetables and he placed the meat in the center and drizzled it with honey. It was for ALL to share. It felt like I enjoyed dinner with the whole place. I made a reservation for Valentine's Day a month out to make sure I secured a spot for my family and 2 days before they called saying it was a prefixed menu. I was excited to go bc I'm not from this area and now 2 days before valentines when I'm not going to be home with my family I have to find a place when a month out a lot of places in the neighboring restaurants were already booked a month out. Extremely Disappointed After a One Hour Drive We had a really disappointing experience at Kanoon. We decided to try this restaurant on Saturday, the day after Valentine's Day. Since we live almost one hour away, we made sure to call ahead and make a reservation before driving there. The person on the phone confirmed our reservation and told us to come. When we arrived, we were told they were not accepting any customers. We explained that we had just made a reservation about an hour earlier. Then they told us that because it was Valentine's Day the night before, they had been very busy and had sold out of everything. They said they had nothing left to serve. What upset us the most is that no one told us this when we called. If they were sold out and unable to serve customers, they should not have taken our reservation. We drove one hour there and one hour back with four people in the car, for nothing. My younger son said he would never want to come back, and honestly, I feel the same way. We were excited to try this place, and instead we left frustrated. This felt very unprofessional, and unfortunately, we will not come back to Kanoon. I definitely don't recommend Kanoon. This is a 5 star restaurant. If you were to go to Olive Garden you have to wait for a seat (usually there is no wait time for seating for Kanoon) and your food, this is the exact same! If you plan on eating there know that they take a bit of time to get the food ready. The place is absolutely nice, regarding appearance! The orange and black makes the place look different compared to other places. The background music is great too! It takes a bit till they bring the food, but I would rather wait and have good food than have my food served in 5 min cold and tasteless! The food is always good, Espically the desserts! This is the same old dump- they just put some lip stick on the pig. It looks like a diner inside now. I didn't get seated right away because the hostess was scrolling on her phone. Ordered water labneh and mixed grill. They served me bottled water which is fine in Europe- but here I expect it to be included in a sit down meal or an option for a premium water upon request. Poland spring is not premium water unfortunately. The servers are all very odd. Some with I pads, some with telecom wires and ear pieces like they are guarding the president & mine who had not even a pen. The labneh looked and tasted like sour cream and the olive oil tasted like canola. The pita they gave was old bagged pocket pita- awful Mixed grill was tasteless. Smoked rice tasted like plain rice. Everything was cold Some of the oddities I experienced. If you're trying to go for lunch, don't. The reviews on the food and the social media blast notwithstanding, this is an absolute no go for anyone on a set time for lunch. I had an hour before I had to leave for an appointment. A full hour for lunch. Great. I thought I'd try this place that people were raving about. Big mistake. First off, if you do a quick take, the place looks nice. Nice chairs. Nice tables. Decent ambiance. But during the long time I had to look around, the place really is like lipstick on a pig (reference to another review), with the ugly fat of the pig showing through the cheap lipstick. From outside to in, the place looks like they tried to be frugal on updating and it shows from the bad paint job to the rocking uneven tables. I might not have noticed all of this other than I had abundant time to look around waiting for my food order. That isn't even the worst of it. I can't tell you about the actual food here because the service is that bad. It started by taking a few minutes for me to be seated. Once seated, it took over 15 minutes before they took my order. At that time, the waiter, wearing a big cowboy hat, told me it would take about 15 minutes for the food. Looking at my watch, I realized I only would have about half an hour left to eat at that point but figured I could eat quickly even if the food took a few minutes longer. I wish that had happened. After waiting for more than 25 minutes for my food, I looked at the manager inquiring. He told me the food will be out in a couple minutes. A further seven minutes went by with no food and an additional promise of the food coming right out. Eventually, I was forced to leave as I would have had less than 10 minutes to eat my lunch. They did offer to pack to go and even brought out some hummus but at that point it was way too little way too late. Waiting 50 min from entry to no food, and about 35 min since order to my leaving is not acceptable. If you cannot deliver food at lunchtime and in a timely manner, you should not be open for lunch. Maybe at dinner when people have more time this works but at lunch this is a definite, no go. I have no idea if the food is any good or not as while it smelled really good, I never got to eat anything. There are plenty of other options in this area that you should try at lunchtime if you are so inclined. Do not bother giving this place a try if this is how they treat their customers. Full disclosure - they had 5 tables including me at the time of my visit. One of 8 or so, three of 2 customers and me. No way that food for 14 total customers should take this long to bring out. Time wise, I ordered as another couple was ordering and their more involved meal came out while I was still waiting. Absolute 10/10 experience! I discovered this restaurant on tiktok and knew I had to go. The chicken wings were so tender fell right off the bone, the sauce was to perfection. Our waitress was so kind, helpful and patient. Service was very quick got our drinks and meals immediately. They give you complimentary salad and potatoes which I thought was such a delicious suprise. The atmosphere was very clean and welcoming, great music playing. Finally the DESSERT, I got the dubai chocolate strawberries which tasted like actual heaven, and my boyfriend had gotten the dubai chocolate crepe which also tasted like it was straight from heaven. I was really excited to try this new addition to Waterbury, sadly it wasn't what we were expecting. With several excellent Middle Eastern restaurants in the immediate area the idea of a smokehouse did sound different. We have an award winning American BBQ here in Waterbury so when I think "smokehouse" I think of that type of smoked meats. While the meat was good I tasted no "smoke" flavor at all. There's 3 large smokers in the front entrance and it honestly was as if they were being used for show- there's no cooking going on up front. There was tv's with flames, everything that gave the illusion of a smokehouse, waiters wearing bbq aprons, but no smoke. I've seen videos with flame torches, dishes served in smoke ring, that was not our experience. There were 4 bbq sauces on the table, none tasted homemade, more like Sweet baby rays. Staff was friendly. We were greeted with a complimentary chopped salad, kind of them. Tasty, a little salty. I was a little concerned when I ordered water and was served bottled water. Made me think there was something wrong with the water. We started with kanoon starter chef special. It was brisket over fries with a cheese sauce on top. The brisket was good- however, no smoke flavor. The cheese sauce was like a cheese wiz, I liked dipping the fries in it but didn't pair well with the brisket in my opinion. There was a complimentary small tray of coleslaw, red cabbage, and a salsa. Coleslaw was ok, didn't care for the others. We also received half a sweet potato and a couple roasted baby potatoes, not really sure if that was complimentary or part of the app. I got the half chicken. The chicken was well cooked and juicy. The flavor didn't taste Middle Eastern but it was good. More like a rotisserie chicken. There was a mayo sauce served with it, I believe it was supposed to be toum, if so it lacked garlic. The bulgar tasted like sazon tomato Spanish rice. The "salad" was a small amount of undressed greens. My partner got the mixed grill and added a lamb chop. Would have preferred the lamb medium as it was a little overcooked (I don't think they asked). Again, good portion, not bad, but not smoky. While none of it was bad there wasn't anything that left us wanting to return. Nothing gave "smokehouse" and nothing gave authentic middle eastern flavor. In my opinion all the complementary items, extras, sides were unnecessary, would have rather see more focus on the meat. The music selection was a little loud for an empty restaurant and it felt trance-like instead of relaxing, with commercials on the music station... pay the $10 for no ads at least. Between the music and the sound of crackling wood from the tv's became obnoxious after a while. Hopefully my feedback can be useful in someway, wish them well. My family took me here for my birthday, but to be honest, I struggled to find something I genuinely wanted to eat. We ended up ordering a pound and a half of smoked ribs to share, and while my family enjoyed them, I personally didn't care for the meat. Another thing to note is that they don't serve alcoholic beverages, which might be a downside for those who enjoy a cold drink with their meal. Overall, while the ambiance and service were nice, the limited menu and my personal taste preferences mean I wouldn't choose to return on my own. Found this location on social media and we had to check out the hype. This beautiful restaurant became an amazing experience and looking forward to returning back. The food from beginning to end was delicious, well seasoned, perfectly portioned for the value of cost. The only minor issue was serves was a little slow. We had to ask more than once for our drinks but overall our waiters and their staff attentive, friendly and helpful. Really expected a lot from this place from all the reviews and hype online. Didn't even live up to a 2 star review. Service was horrible. Place is new and clean but that's about it. Smokers out front. Cleared not being hard and only for show. Beef rib was ok but definitely not smoke house or smoked. No bark, no smoke ring, definitely not BBQ at all. Lamb was ok. Food was great! Loved every dish we ordered! Perfectly marinated not overwhelming or spicy at all!!! Service and wait staff were attentive and top notch! Ambiance feels as if you stepped into your family restaurant! Such great hospitality from the owner! Don't 2nd guess going here! This is one solid hala restaurant, not too far from central connecticut, we went on a Saturday night it was not too crowded, we ordered multiple dishes including smoked beef prime ribs, smoked Beef shank, smoked Beef brisket, smoked Lamb shoulder, whole chicken and mix grill. Well its a lot but we wanted to try as much variety as possible, salads came first then food came in a glass covered dishes, the food was great specially the smoked beef prime short ribs, smoked lamb shoulder, mix grill, and the chicken, the side dishes were rice and burglar which were flavorful and delicious, overall experience was great but the prices are a little on the high side. read more
