Came here, looking forward to a gyro, and my wife was in the mood for breakfast for dinner. My gyro was $19 and was a major disappointment. I'm used to seeing a huge pile of meat in a pita that contains yogurt sauce, feta and lots of assorted veggies. I received 3 small pieces of meat that looked, tasted and chewed like shoe leather. They were arranged on top of chopped iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and a stale pita. There were two slices of feta and a tiny plastic to-go container of tezyki on the side. The pita was so stale, it crumbled when I tried to fold it in half to make a sandwich. My wife's egg sandwich was very overdone and flattened into an unrecognizable shape. The service was friendly, but not attentive. Our drinks were not refilled and our server was nowhere to be seen after she dropped off the meals. Dining room and restroom were clean, and looked like they were recently remodeled. We ate the food because we were hungry, but don't plan on returning. read more

I have been to this location multiple times over many years. I recently stopped by en route to somewhere else figuring it was a safe bet. The place was clean (including restrooms) airy and light filled. We were seated immediately, and service was fast and attentive, just how it should be. The menu is quite large with many selections. We ordered breakfast, and while everything was fine, it was just that. I don't think anything is made in house (definitely not the corned beef hash as I asked). Fozen has browns. Phenomenal. I'm not a huge fan of diners but this one was delish. We sat at the counter because we were in a rush. The food was fast and the service was great. Mary P. was our server and she was very attentive and enthusiastic (which was great for peak hours on a Saturday!). The chocolate chip pancake was cooked to perfection with a solid chocolate chip distribution (iykyk). The menu was extensive and the place is super clean and nice. My mom and I stopped in for breakfast around 11 on a Saturday morning. They were busy but were able to seat us, and we couldn't believe we were in and out in 45 minutes - it was great! Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and I also have to say this is one of the cleanest diners we've ever been to. Even the windows were sparkling! The strawberry shortcake pancakes were great, and usually I have difficulty finishing a stack of 3, but these were nice and light. My mom liked her eggs benny and hash browns, and the bacon was crispy and had a nice smoky flavor. A solid choice for breakfast on Washington Ave! We'll have to come back and try them for lunch/dinner. read more

In a word: don't. Lots of other great diners to try in the area. What does "hot meatloaf sandwich" mean to you? To me, it means a steaming open face sandwich covered in brown gravy. What I got was two slabs of cold, dry meatloaf, sitting on dried out wonder bread. Everything ice cold. When I asked, we were told "that's how it comes." It was inedible. When the server asked, we were basically met with shrugs. No one offered to back it out of the bill. Expect a lot more out of a $16 sandwich. We went non for a late dinner and I got a tuna sandwich with spinach and onion. They used frozen spinach asked if I wanted grilled onions. She was very confused . Stopped back in at Athena a year later and I must admit I was very disappointed. Being a Greek diner this time since it was evening I ordered the gyro platter. What came was some frozen gyro pre-sliced and heated on the grill, just three small strips, served with fries. Turned out the fries were the best thing the gyro was awful. Went back the next night and ordered the spinach pie, awful, frozen pie that was all dough and no filling. I had the Greek salad with the pie and that was without a doubt the best thing. The salad comes with grape leaves and an outstanding Greek dressing. As I say again this place is very expensive for a diner so you need to watch what you order. Next time I will just stick to steak and eggs. read more

Is it possible to give a diner 4 stars?...Yes, yes it is! This diner is one of the few left that is 24 hours, +1. The food menu is huge and the service is fast & friendly. Water is a given, as in immediately upon being seated. The whole place has recently been redone in nice blue tones, even the bathrooms. I love the chicken souvlaki, and that's my go to dish here. Fries are crisp, mozzarella sticks are yum, breakfasts are good, what more can you ask for at 2am? read more

Ate here on a Sunday afternoon on the way home to NJ. It wasn't too far from the highway and we were able to gas up then stop for lunch. It wasn't too busy, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Inside of the diner looks like it was either newly renovated or just new in general. It was clean and still had the diner feel to it. So many different items on the menu, including breakfast served all day of course. I went for spaghetti and sauce. Nothing special, but it was delicious and not too big of a portion. Our server was nice and friendly. Best part is how they were kind enough to split the bill between the 4 of us. A lot of places won't do that, so I appreciate it. read more

In terms of serving sizes, you will get a bang for your buck without sacrificing too much quality. Of the times I have been here, the quality of food is usually good with some minor slips up here or there given time of night. Of course, that is inherent given that this place if one of the ONLY 24 hour places to eat that isn't a fast food chain driveway. I think the waitresses here get a bad rep on some reviews considering some of the clientele they have to deal with. I am a big proponent of actively treating your serving staff with empathy having been on both sides myself. At Athena, I have had people who were "New England tough" but will crack a joke with you should you be willing. The pragmatic parts of the service including correct orders, time from tabling tabling to order taking to serving to checkout, and taking requests WITHIN reason has been pretty solid. The only reason I don't give Athena anything more than 3 stars is, beyond what I have already said, the restaurant is nothing spectacular. It fits its function well as a 24 hour diner with solid food choices that are not particularly notable. I will continue to eat here as a solid choice and for late night sit-downs. read more

The prices here seem pretty steep for diner fare. The service was good, looked like a clean place. The menu is huge and they serve breakfast all day. I'm going to start off with..... the service ABSOLUTELY SUCKED! First the burger and salad ordered took 20 minutes to arrive, I would be ok with that if the people who came in and ordered 15 minutes after us didn't get their food the same time as us. Second, the waitress had no personality and couldn't care less about us. Lastly, when the manager at the register asked us how everything was and we said "we've had better here" she just said "sorry" and didn't ask us why, then just walked away when she handed us the credit card slip. Never had any problems with this place , even though we come here literally every morning and have french toast and it's good amount for a great price. Comes with 3 slices of french toast and can come with a choice of bacon or sausage. Really neat and nice but wish the bathrooms weren't so small only two stalls and I had to wait because there was a lot of girl's in the bathroom( At least 4 people in line). On top of there's only one sink to wash you hands. So SMALL :(. However our waiter was amazing. Got water for us as soon as possible and didn't have to wait that much even thought it was little busy. The meal was served exactly as ordered, without a too long wait and the service was friendly. There was a wide variety of desserts as well. Came here recently two times. One for mother's day and surprisingly the service was fast on such a busy morning brunch. I got the crab cake eggs Benedict which is bold for me to get at a diner because I'm not expecting it to taste good. It was amazing. The crab cake had so much flavor and the sauce was properly made. My son had the kids pancakes and home fries. Very big portions. Second time I came with my son just for a quick dinner before soccer. Athena is a standard diner - the food and the service is exactly what you would expect. You've got cracked vinyl on your chairs, dishes stained from thousands of washings, etc. Nothing special. HOWEVER -- I'm done. We had a party of 6 meeting at Athena last Saturday. One member of our party went 45 minutes early to put down our name. They told her there were 2 parties in front of her and to sit at the counter. She got some coffee and waited... apparently they meant for ALL SIX OF US to sit at the counter. The second girl showed up; they told the two of them that they weren't going to be able to accommodate a party of 6. More than once they checked back in and were told to go elsewhere. When the other 4 of us showed up a few minutes before the agreed-upon time, all of a sudden the staff went into a tizzy trying to find someplace to seat us. We told them "No thanks" and went to Adelphia Cafe down the street, where we were seated immediately and had much better food and better service. I know where I'm going from now on.
