CHICKEN SHAWARMA WRAP with ALLLLL the sauces!!!!
    Ruth N.

Delicious food - this was our first visit but definitely not our last! The wrap was huge! Probably a foot long and very reasonable at $11. Filled with seasoned chicken and fresh vegetables. The Shawarma over fries was simple but delicious - great shoestring type fries! Brought leftovers of everything home and haven't tried the baklava yet but it looks amazing! The owners were friendly and helpful and eager for us to enjoy their food! The place is low key and clean. Don't pass on the sauces ... they're great, expected tzatziki sauce but my favorite was the red, hot sauce which was a perfect compliment to the wrap! Hope this place survives here ... as it's not been a good spot for past businesses!! Good luck Shawarma Bay!!!

This just opened 4 weeks ago and I finally got a chance to check it out. The food is flavorful and the platters are a good portion! I got the falafel platter and it came seasoned with sauces and had a side of fries, rice, salad, and pickled onions. The staff is friendly and service is quick!

I ordered the chicken shawarma gyro and my son ordered a customized mix lamb and beef gyro- the food is EXCELLENT!!! Fresh, healthy, and delicious! This is going to be our weekly spot!! Also, there's great service, they listen to every detail on how you want your food prepared, and the restaurant is very clean!

Food was amazing !! Seasoned very well. Rice very was a little spicy but not bad at all. Staff very nice. Don't be afraid to ask questions about food you don't know. The young lady at the register was very helpful in questions about spice or food allergies. Thank you !! Will be back.

Halal Spot is a place that has slowly but surely crept up on my radar the last few weeks…read more Apparently, the reviews here are very good. One thing however that did make me nervous about the quality here is that halal foods in Waterbury have so far been complete misses if my past reviews are to be believed. This was also my first time using Yelp to have food delivered. So let me first talk about how long it took from the time I ordered to the time I had my food delivered. The service was pretty fast. On my receipt, my order was placed at 9:33 PM. Initially, Yelp estimated my delivery time to be between 10:12 - 10:32. As of this point in my typing of this review, it is 10:11. When my order was received and confirmed to be in the works, the delivery time changed from 10:05 - 10:25. It actually took less time than that for my food to arrive! How do I know this, you might ask? At 9:56, I had decided to head downstairs from my apartment to check on my order and wait for the delivery driver. Little did I know, it had already arrived! So far, off to a great start! When I got back up to begin my dinner, I took photos first just to have something for my review tonight. I will say that the prices are actually very reasonable, but if you really want to save money, go to the restaurant and pick up the order yourself. I tipped $6.55, so my total for the delivery was $28.88. On my receipt, the total for the order itself was $16.63. If I do order from them again, I will make sure I go at a time that is not so close to closing. Onto the food. For the $16.63, it's not a bad deal. I got the cheesesteak combo, and I will say that the cheesesteak was definitely a decent sandwich. The meat by itself was seasoned well and was flavorful. When I bit into the sandwich, the cheese and mayo were the tastes that prevailed tonight. I do definitely prefer the cheesesteaks I have cooked up on my own, but this does hold its own. If I had been the one coming up with this on the menu though, I would definitely have this only have the cheese, the steak, and the onions. But still, I will say for its price you can do far worse. As for the fries, they were okay. They weren't very crispy, but you can definitely taste some pepper with this one. That pepper seasoning kept these from being bland. The food overall would be anywhere from a 3 to a 3 and a half. That 4th star I am going to award is because of how fast I got my food delivered as well as the reasonable pricing.

It is intentional. The food, the market, the people, the energy of the place all make it worth the trip every single time. The flavors here are deeply rooted in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and you can taste that authenticity in every bite. The hummus is silky and perfectly balanced with tahini and lemon. The baba ganoush carries real smoky depth. The chicken kebabs are juicy and seasoned all the way through. The shawarma is warm, aromatic, and layered with spice. The falafel is crisp outside, vibrant and herbaceous inside. My personal favorite is the Iraqi Chicken Sandwich. It is absolutely phenomenal. The chicken is tender, boldly seasoned, and packed with flavor. Every bite is balanced and satisfying. It is the kind of sandwich that stays on your mind long after you leave. Everything is halal and incredibly fresh. The place is always busy, which tells you everything. The food turns over quickly. The products in the market turn over quickly. There are always people picking up takeout and others shopping the shelves. And the market itself is a treasure. Authentic meats, cheeses, sausages, dairy products, dry goods, teas, dried beans, spices, specialty ingredients and more, all reflecting the flavors of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. These are items you simply will not find in conventional grocery stores. If you love to cook, you will walk out inspired. If you have never been before, do not be intimidated. Walk in. The staff are incredibly welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. There is space to sit and enjoy your meal, and they do a huge takeout business as well. Dunya is easily one of the best places in Waterbury and the surrounding areas. Authentic flavor. Unique products. Warm hospitality. I highly recommend it.

We ordered appetizers to get a good range of variety. The service was sooooo slow. And the glasses seemed as if they had been sitting on the table forever. The food was tasty. It just seemed odd. The temperature of the shrimp were a bit under warmed for my liking but the flavor was amazing. They gave three sauces- that were all bursting with unique flavor. Some were spicy. I did see they were preparing a ton of uber eats deliveries and there appeared to be one person managing all of that. So it makes sense for the slow service. I think I'd prefer to order takeout to dine in. Although the dining room is gorgeous, I wish they had someone to be more attentive to customers and describe menu options with a bit of feeling. It's not just that I had one review removed despite that being from a place I've actually eaten their food from, but that the algorithm has used some of my other reviews in the past to make me look misleading, whether it be adding in information I did not add myself, switched the location of where I had reviewed a place, all of it has led me to distrust Yelp throughout the rest of 2025. I couldn't write another review up until now because every time I had even consider doing so, it felt awkward. I hate having to start a new year off like this, but over the last few weeks, I've had to work on letting go of my anger and confront my issues. Maybe this review can be a way to help with that. End emotional rant. Let's get into Kanoon, because oh boy do I have a lot of thoughts to unpack from here. So how did I actually come to dine at Kanoon? Actually, mom had found this spot and she described the people working there as nice people. We were actually going to go to Texas Roadhouse until we saw the lines inside and went here instead. This visit was more for the sake of mom's emotional well-being than anything else. Parking was a bit of a tight stunt, but as long as you can find somewhere to park you should be okay. Now, upon entering, you have to wait to be seated. Of course, because I parked the car while my mother crutched her way over to a table, I was able to just come in and tell the employee who I was with and head on over to that table. Decor and thematically, it's pleasant to look at. There's a bull head on one of the walls with a Kanoon license plate nearby. Two arcade machines are stowed away near the bathrooms. Bathrooms were nice too I guess. There's two areas where you can be seated at. At one point while we were eating, we are featured a show of dry ice at our tables. It's like fog on our own tables. They do take it back after a short while. Like I said, it's nice to look at. So now onto the food. There was the Lotus Shake, the Hummus Plate, a tray of slaws, mom had the lamb, and I had the smoked meat starter. Oh, and the crepeholics crepe was the dessert. Food is served on exotic plates and on wood. The lamb my mom got was served on a cracked wooden plate that was on its way out, so even though she did still like the lamb, she didn't finish the salad that came with it. As for me, the meat on my platter tasted fine at first, but the more I ate, the more of a story it told. The more I ate, the blander it got. Not even some extra pepper that was available at my table could save the meat. While I did still finish it, it was not without a struggle. The fries were at least crispy, and the cheese on top helped with the flavor a little. Also, the presentation was top-notch. The hummus plate was another item that was presented well, and if the main dish was as good as the hummus, I would probably have added another star to the review. But yes, the hummus was in fact a good appetizer. The chickpeas that topped it were just right. The Lotus Shake was probably the best thing I had of the night. It's a shake topped with whipped cream, a Biscoff cookie, cookie crumbs, and one of those cookie straws that are this one treat I can't think of the name at the moment. The milkshake had a caramel flavor to it, and mixed with the whipped cream was divine. The dessert was a little underwhelming if I have to be honest. You have the same caramel Biscoff flavor you did with the Lotus Shake in this crepe, and the chocolate was more of a milk chocolate. Funny thing, I had actually recently learned how to make custard using dark chocolates, and just from having my own custard alone I can tell you that this crepe would have been better complimented if a dark chocolate was used in place of the milk chocolate. This place isn't really anything to write home about. The only reason I even knew this place existed before was because this place had tons of fake Google reviews in its opening weeks. I hope Google has begun cracking down on that, but I had already lost my trust in Yelp before, so I'm going to call that even and just rate this place based on my experience here. Because it was an okay-at-best place, I can't say I would recommend Kanoon at this time.

We got the mixed cold appetizers which tasted really good with their bread. The mixed grill was very good, their lamb is one of the best we've had. I hope they consider adding iskender to their menu in the future. Unfortunately we didn't experience the best service when we were there. They didn't give us menus so we looked it up on our phones, and we had to flag the staff down to take our order after almost 15min. We asked for water refills and yogurt sauce but received neither and no one came to check on us. We didn't want to wait longer so we opted to skip dessert.

Let me talk about the kebab -- the quality of this place has significantly declined over time. When…read morethey first opened, they were truly making authentic Adana kebab. The chef was from Adana, and he used to prepare lamb meat properly with a zırh (traditional curved knife). But those days seem to be long gone. During my last two visits, there's been a noticeable drop in flavor. It seems they've switched from hand-minced meat to machine-ground meat, and they've started mixing in beef as well. The kebab, which used to crumble with rich texture, has now turned into something more like a cheap supermarket meatball. Despite charging above-average prices, this decline in quality is unacceptable. The kebab was served with both rice and bulgur pilaf, but both had clearly been sitting for a while. The rice, in particular, seemed like it had been cooked 2-3 days earlier -- it was far from fresh. It might still appeal to Turkish customers who have never actually had proper kebab even in Turkey, but to anyone who knows what Adana kebab is supposed to be, this is a joke. I assume most of their customers are foreigners who don't really know what to expect from a real Adana kebab -- so they've taken the easy and cheap route. To make things worse, during my last visit, one side of the kebab was burnt. And the chef, like a typical trickster, had placed the burnt side facing down on the plate, trying to hide it. That's just shameful. And finally -- here's a photo of the cooked tomato they served. Completely white and unripe. Really, chef? You didn't notice when cutting it? You didn't see it while cooking? Or even when plating it? If good tomatoes are hard to find (which they're not -- they're just coming into season), then don't serve them at all. If someone asks, you simply say "It's not the season, and we couldn't find good-quality tomatoes, so we chose not to serve any." But you don't serve pickling-grade, pale white tomatoes on a plate. Also, the place is now covered with signs saying it's alcohol-free -- seriously, there are nearly ten of them across the entrance, exit, and walls. When I asked the waiter about it, he explained that the restaurant is now a "halal establishment." But here's the strange part: since the place opened, I've been there around seven times, and every time I brought my own alcohol, the staff gladly served it to me at the table. Surely they didn't just now discover that alcohol isn't considered *halal* in their religion.

The tandoori chicken tikka was my favorite, spicy but not overpowering, super juicy a lot of seasoning. The chicken malai boti was also juicy, but it is a very subtle light seasoning. Not too salty, not spicy, still with very nice char on it. I like that the chicken dishes did not come with rice as I don't eat it and it's a waste when I order elsewhere.
