Great food. Fast! Egg rolls were great. Spring rolls were too greasy for me. Egg rolls could have been crispier. The entree well made up for it. I had the Korean Bulgogi. It was delicious. BBQ beef, rice, kitchen, and an egg. I chose white rice. It was a perfect mound of sticky white rice. For the salad, I chose ginger. Excellent side salad dressing was fresh with lots of ginger. They said it would be ready in 30-min, we got there at 35-min and had to wait forever. Got home... no soup, no salad. Chicken was overcooked, dry as dirt, no flavor. Rice was not fried Veggies ... no veggies just soggy ass cabbage. Egg rolls were actually soggy Crab Rangoon were inedible. Tried to call... two hang ups and a 30-minute hold later. Kanpai is a great, convenient Japanese restaurant. Food is ALWAYS consistent l, delicious and priced reasonable. They have tRaditional dinners with soup, salad (authentic-ginger dressing), veggies and steamed or fried rice. Also, extensive sushi/sashimi menu, and sake and other adult beverages. Service is always prompt, professional and pleasant. Geo assisted us tonight and he's awesome! They have early bird specials till 6:30, and do a tremendous take out business too. Good, but not great. I really enjoy sushi, and I was looking forward to trying out this place. My first impression suffered when the shumai I ordered as an appetizer was not brought out before my meal. Add to that a very salty (in my opinion) mushroom soup and an unexceptional salad. The Mega Power Booster lunch tray I ordered was actually pretty good. I gave the waitress credit (and a larger than normal tip) for comping the shumai and for being extremely accommodating to a grouch of a customer who knocked over a table when he came in. Rude! I'll go back, in hopes that my next experience will be better. It would be nice to have a good sushi go to spot here on the island. read more

The owner got on the phone, and within 45 minutes they traveled some distance (they do not deliver, mind you) to deliver a new meal to us. Unique, extra fancy rainbow roll.... the sushi is great and the fried rice is off the chain! The chef special was also phenomenal. Service was swift and friendly. Tokyo Rose (wine and cold saki blend) was interesting. I ordered two and walked out feeling like a rockstar. I will definitely be back for the food. The ambiance isn't anything to rave about but the food is so good that it didn't matter. Hole is the wall sushi joint that is small and nothing to rave about until you order the sushi. They will create anything you want as well. I told the sushi chef what my favs were previously in other sushi places and he created me a roll that was to die for. Salmon, eel, seaweed salad, cucumber inside, spicy tuna and smoked salmon with Caviar and roe with crunch and sesame seed oil drizzle. Best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. As soon as we came in the door, It felt like a warm inviting atmosphere. My server, I think her name was Grace, was outstanding. We had a huge party and she was able to deliver on all our requests in a timely manner. The food was outstanding and the service was that of any high end restaurant. I am from Falls Church Va, which has a high population of Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese people and foods. This place was *delicious.* Best ginger sauce is the best I've ever had. The noodles had a great texture and flavor, and the vegetables were crunchy and not over saturated like most of the restaurants do around here. The beef was quality and had a good texture. The only thing is I wish the beef had more salt, but it's not a big issue because they have salt and pepper at the tables and it's probably better to serve it that way considering the noodles are pretty salty (but not too salty!) read more

I'm so sad to have to write this review. I'm a local to the islands and I've been going to Kanpai for over 10 years, but the service the last time I went was awful. The food was mediocre and there were flies all over the place. They also charged me for something I ordered and did not receive. I spoke to the manager to try to correct the mistake, and I heard the chefs yelling at her when she tried to speak to them about my missing food, insisting that they made it. The wrong item was removed from my ticket and I was forced to pay for something I never got. I won't be returning until I'm aware of different management and cooking staff, and definitely not until the fly situation is resolved. read more

Food can always be expected to come out fairly quickly and always delicious.They have the most options for sushi rolls that I've seen in town. I'm amazed this place is actually allowed to call itself a restaurant. I've questioned this fact as soon as I've laid eyes on the place. The milieu of this Japanese-themed establishment is sub-dive, with dirt on the floors and sticky tables. Real restaurants aren't this filthy. First, there lingers an aroma of fish rot that smacks you in the face as soon as you open the door. The kind of fish rot that even the neighborhood cats avoid. After you sit down, the service isn't terrible. This place hires local teenagers, and they do the best that they can under the circumstances. Unfortunately, when the place is a dump, they don't take the pride to know anything about the menu or to care terribly much about contributing to the dining experience. The food comes out pretty quickly. My wife and I have been here a few times to make sure they weren't having an "off" day, and we have also ordered different things from the menu. The one thing I can say about the food here is that it's consistent. Unfortunately, it's consistently bad...as in, run-to-the-bathroom-when-you-get-home-bad. I don't know why I bother to order sushi at this place -it's always fishy, slimy, and the rice is always a little too warm, which enhances the ick factor of the rotting fish. This has been the only place where I leave half the meal on the plate while still hungry. My wife tends to get noodle-based dishes when we go out for Japanese, and every time we've gone to Kanpai, it's a mess on a plate. It always tastes like someone in the kitchen is experimenting with sauces they just discovered at an Asian grocery store. I've made salty, weird, not at all Japanese-tasting dishes like these in my own kitchen, so my palate is well versed in this taste of failure. It's a shame, really. One of these days, there will be a Japanese restaurant on Wilmington Island (Savannah). Kanpai needs to stop pretending to be such an establishment, and close down already. The people of Sakura need to bring their brand of inexpensive, high-quality Japanese to the islands. They face no competition here. read more

Recently this location was totally redone on the inside. New painted walls, a cleaner and neat sushi bar and most importantly a nicer wait staff. I always get teriyaki chicken and sushi, the quality of the food is 100% better than a year ago. They have become my favorite place on the islands to go for food. read more

My cousin who now lives in Savannah, GA brought us to Kanpai for some dessert. (We were visiting from New Jersey). Their special Lava cake was so delicious. The soft and moist chocolate cake was very warm and topped and surrounded with cold ice cream and whipped cream. My kids love them. And the mochi ice cream (different flavors) was also delicious. I like the green tea flavor the best. They also have the unique Japanese soda where there is a marble that you will push in to open it. My kids had fun opening the bottles. They serve great desserts here. Service was excellent. We are glad we stopped by here. We will visit again if we are in the area. read more

If you can get over the awful green walls, too-bright lights and American soft-rock, the rest of the atmosphere isn't bad. It's clean and not too loud. It was busy on a Sunday night. Although I saw no one of oriental descent working, the Japanese food was still passable, although slightly expensive. Not great sushi, but not terrible. The waitstaff is all teenagers and the service isn't very good. During our visit our drinks went empty and we had to call over the waitress to get another. The crowning moment of our visit was when the entire staff took a shot of saki with a customer at the bar. read more

This has rapidly become my favorite oriental restaurant in the Savannah area. My wife and I have started coming here regularly, and have yet to have a bad experience! It also the only place I can get her to order real sushi... The closest to any kind of problem we've had was actually tonight, when the servers seemed lost. We had one if the servers walk up and explain that they'd had a scheduling issue, and the only servers other than her were still training. Even so, we didn't wait an inordinate amount of time and our food was still fantastic. The Shogun, Samurai and Geisha are by far the best deals. They are alarmingly large boxes of food which only cost $12-17 depending on the protein. I'd also suggest the Savannah Sunrise and Kamikaze roll! read more

As I continue my search for amazing sushi in Savannah, I realize that no place will ever live up to my expectations....but this doesn't mean I can't keep looking! I was pleased with Kanpai, despite my trepidation after reading some of the reviews. I went in with an open mind and an empty belly. The biggest, and most pleasant surprise, was the Savannah Spring Roll. Maybe it's just the mayo, but this was moist, delicious and really filling. I wanted to order some to take home with me, but spring rolls just aren't the same the next day...rice paper doesn't travel well. The other rolls we tried were acceptable, but obviously didn't leave a huge impression, as I can't recall what they were. However, I'll be going back to try them again...if only to get more spring rolls! read more

This place is total ass. Used to be good a few years ago, but now sucks. Service is slow and food is below average. Just ate here yesterday, came in around 6:50 on a Saturday. Waited 15 minutes before we even got asked what we want to drink. 30 min later we finally revived drinks and appetizers. The soup was fucking cold. Never again. Unfortunately just had to leave without being served. When we received our menus, our waitress asked if we would like a minute and we did need a minute to look over the menu. However, 10 minutes went by with just another couple sitting, also looking confused as to where our server was. I sat in plain sight into the kitchen and our server is playing with the cook and throwing napkins at each other and I made eye contact with him once and with our server four times and she continued to prance around and play with the cook. So my boyfriend said it looks like we aren't going to be served and we got up and went to Co on Whitaker downtown. Never returning again. It also looked very unkept and ran down in there. read more

Not really sure what the other gentleman is referring to on several issues. Recently ate at Kanpai and found my dining experience to be quite enjoyable. The food was well prepared and in quite generous portions. I had the yakiniku steak (great choice if you enjoy saltier foods but I know the previous reviewer did not) with some well priced spicy salmon maki (2.25 for 4 pieces of sushi with solid pieces of salmon). As for the odor. I noticed nothing terribly bad. It just smelled like a resturaunt that served fish. Nothing repulsive by any stretch of the imagination. As for the tables, the one I was sitting at was a little sticky but not do to the fact of filth. Upon closer observation it seemed the finish had been stripped over the years this place has been open (about 9 and counting.) As for the overall comparison to the Sakura restaraunt on the southside, mr Michael mustn't have visited sakuras pre-2007. Every restaraunt renovates. Bottom line. The only thing this place has going for it is that the staff is nice. I've only ordered takeout from here twice, but the second time was proof that it is consistently sub-par. While I waited for my order,I noticed that the cooks making the sushi were openly drinking in plain view of the entire restaurant- not just a little nip here and there but really slugging it down; needless to say it was not a great impression. As for the food itself, the California rolls were good but the rest of the sushi was so dried out and steeped in vinegar that it was completely inedible. Avoid!!! read more

When ordering off a sushi menu you would expect to receive what is detailed in the description. What experienced sushi chef would smother a roll with some subpar slime? When I questioned the nasty addition and told the chef I was allergic to his soy based products, the waitress chimed in and said I should have told them my allergy in advance. Well Kanpei I have never ordered a Philly Roll that came with such crap smothered on my sushi from any other restaurant. How was I supposed to know? It wasn't in your description! Would you feed peanuts to a person who would have an anaphylactic attack? When I asked for a new roll...the sushi chef said, "I am sorry ma'am this is how WE make sushi." Never again Kanpei...I will take my business to Hirano's or Sushi Zen. read more

This is your typical hibachi/sushi restaurant. They have a small, cozy dining room which is nice and off to side their is an expandable room for large parties. There is a small sushi bar off to the side, so it's great if you are only looking to grab some sushi rolls. We have yet to try the sushi and it is definitely something we always 'plan to do next time.' We typically always go for hibachi dishes not only for generous portions but for their shrimp sauce. Service is usually pretty good and you always get what you pay for. read more
