STAFF & MANAGEMENT RUDE AND UNCLEAN! When I ordered a pick up order and advised them they forgot a soup and asked if everything was in my bag (because my order didn't look complete) they got angry I asked them to check. And when I went back to say, I wasn't trying to cause trouble, I'm just missing food from my order, I was told by management that I needed to "Back up out of her personal space and that she doesn't have time for this" - Not to mention I watched the Sushi Chef with NO gloves on wipe the sweat from his forehead and then proceed to make sushi for guests. How did they pass Health Inspection with habits like that?!?! Ceiling is stained and falling down in areas, staff making food not required to wear hair nets?? with long hair?? - I will NEVER eat there again!!! read more

My salad was swimming in an inch of dressing like soup, no kidding. The soba dish was drowned in a dark sugar sauce and lacked any ounce of color, or care. My wife tasted it to confirm it wasn't pleasant. Maybe a bad night for a new cook? We'll be back for great sushi though. And uh oh, my mushroom soup had no mushrooms in it. Is this right? I ordered the tempura sushi combo and was really disappointed. The first thing I noticed when I opened the first box was that my "salad" was literally 5 tiny pieces of iceberg lettuce in a box..Next I noticed the small serving of tempura was ice cold...Lastly when I opened the sushi box the fish was browned and clearly old. I was overall really disappointed I wasted $30+ on what looked like old leftovers. Will not be returning and wouldn't recommend anyone wasting their money here. read more

The food was Outstanding, the service SUCKED! Saint Patricks Day Weekend, 7ish, not to crowded, not terribly busy. With four of us, we were awarded "Use The Force" as our waiter. Sadly, he seemed to have a learning disability from the start. He couldn't get our wine orders correct, told us that they no longer made the Menu Name Sake "Kanpai Dinner.' However, when I inquired if this were true with the Chef, he said, "Of course, we make Kanpai Dinner!" Then "Use the Force" had to crawfish back to his work station. My wife's meal arrived first, 30 minutes before anyone else. Drink order still incorrect. Finally, I used one of the menus to circle the wine we ordered. Finally, my Kanpai Dinner arrived, without the included soup and salad. But they still charged me the whole price. So let's review. Great Food, Service Sucked. That's my review and I'm sticking to it. I think "Use the Force" should get a job as a Walmart Greeter. I keep reading terrible reviews of this place, so I came here to give my two cents. First of all, I've never had a problem at Kanpai. Sometimes, the food comes out slowly but it is never wrong. If the rice is warm, that means it's fresh in terms of the sushi. That means it's right out of the cooker and rolled with vinegar. If it's -not- warm, that means it's old. The only thing would be their grilled veggies, which are usually very greasy and I don't touch them. But it's not an integral part of the meal and I usually skip them anyway. As far as service, most of the waiters/waitresses are teenagers and this is likely their first job. Cut them some slack. This isn't a 5 star dining experience. It's a homely, Wilmington Island restaurant to grab some grub. The service is always optimal, and they are never rude. Though they don't check in often, they are super friendly and when you flag them down, they are always apologetic that they did not catch you sooner. The first time I went into Kanpai, they did have sticky, wooden tables. They have since replaced them with washable table cloths (they also use vinyl cloth) which I think is a very good choice. As far as the smell, I have never smelled anything but Japanese food in the air at Kanpai. It always smells decently fresh. And last but not least, if you think Sakura is fine Japanese dining, consider the fact that they put sugar in some rolls, like their California roll. Sakura is american Japanese and it is sub par. Their noodle bowls aren't worth the time of day. You get what you pay for at Kanpai. Are rolls $7 for cheap fish? No. So don't expect to be wined and dined when your paying minimal costs. If you want -authentic- Japanese, go to New York. Every other place is going to be Americanized. Some people should learn what an actual Japanese restaurant is before criticizing a fine establishment like Kanpai. read more

This is probably one of the worst Japanese restaurants I have been to. The sushi is mediocre and the rest of the food I have had on this menu is trifling. The atmosphere is just laughable and if you get takeout, you usually are missing stuff when you get home and unpack it. They have a bunch of high school kids waiting on tables, so in most cases, you know you're going to get incompetency. Not the best-ever Japanese but it is pretty good and cheap. After going there several times to please my fiancée, I finally found a sushi roll I could enjoy: the crunchy bueno roll with no mayo. It is big enough for two. We always get the same thing and split the crunchy bueno roll and the chicken teriyaki. The chicken is pretty good, has a good flavor and is usually very tender. The teenage servers ruin this establishment, except for Dylan on this particular evening, who went above and beyond in providing superb customer service. Being locals on Wilmington Island, we frequent this restaurant fairly often. Take out sushi sits on the counter for 15+ minutes, then packed in the same bag as hot, grilled entrees. A serious health concern is shrugged off by an unprofessional server, Jessica, with a nonchalant response "well, heat rises so...". I understand physics, and also have enough common sense to know that raw sushi should not be packed with warm food after being left at room temperature for over 15 minutes. After speaking with the owner, we have been assured more professional, competent experiences in the future at this beloved establishment on the island. read more

Food was actually really good, philly roll was outstanding, Rainbow Roll was to die for. And the Kanpai Tortilla Roll was a delicious discovery. Why the one star? Horrible customer service. When we came in there was Two dirty tables so the only spot to sit was in the back corner near the kitchen. Then, after about 20 minutes, our order was taken. 4 other tables came in and were served before we got our food, 40 minutes after we ordered! Our waitress was trying so hard to avoid our table that another waitress came to bring it to us. The original was hiding from us in the kitchen. No explanation was given, no apologies. Check was dropped on our table ninja style, we didn't even see how it got there, it just appeared. We paid and left and no one said a thing. Sad really, such fantastic food and the customer service ruined the experience. We hope it was just a bad night and will be back, the food is that good. But, they need to upgrade the service staff. read more

The sushi was fresh tasting. That's the only reason it's getting 2 stars. We ordered take out. I was very surprised to find an 18% gratuity added to my take out. The take out menu states 18% added for parties of 6 or more, but doesn't state anything for take out. I looked at the ticket and everything was correct, but when I got home the order was wrong. I ordered one of the rolls with the aoli on the side. They didn't put it on the side. I had also ordered 2 other rolls specifically because they didn't have a sauce, the under power and the Savannah beach. Imagine my surprise to find and aoli on one and a sweet soy on the other. I guess that was my bad for not checking the order, but I won't make that mistake again because I won't be ordering again. read more

This is my go to sushi place for one roll (it's that good) - try the Savannah Beach Roll! The salads with ginger dressing are great - I wish they'd sell the dressing! The service is also good. I've never seen it too busy, which I personally like. My husband likes the steak and scallops, which comes with soup and salad. read more

I have dined here several times with my family and friends and have always had great food. I have only had one bad experience with the service when the server didn't know what sushi rolls she was delivering to our table. We went with friends that evening, and they mixed our orders up, so I was eating my friend's order and vice versa. Regardless of the server's error, the food is very good and fresh, and I will continue to eat here. I love the seaweed salad here. My son begs me to take him to Kampai to get his favorite Dragon Roll and Dynamite Roll. read more
