We went here for dinner and it was so good! I love the ambience of this place and our server, Meg, was so well verse with the menu and drinks recommendations! We had their crispy spicy tuna appetizer with crispy square rice on the bottom and they were so good. For the main entree I ordered their butabara kimchi ramen and it was what I needed, the broth was rich, savory, and the kimchi really brings the broth flavor more dimensional. The ramen noodle texture was cooked to perfection and the pork belly paired so well in this ramen. My husband ordered the A5 wagyu rib eye and the steak melt in your mouth. We sprinkle the sea salt and dipped it in the quail yolk dashi juice and it was perfection! It is definitely a gem restaurant for Savannah! Truly amazing food experience! read more

Ukiyo is a Japanese restaurant with a ramen bar and is a very hip urban Japanese spot in Savannah. The lights dimly lit and the main entrance includes a massive fully stocked bar. There's a great selections of Japanese Whiskey, Sake and cocktails. We had a reservation and when we entered it was a bit confusing with people all over the place in the entrance not sure whether waiting to speak to the hostess or just casually waiting to be called for their table. After getting sorted we spoke to the hostess and then were shortly seated. The waiter came and took our drink orders right away. We got 2 cokes and a Whiskey Sour with Japanese Whiskey. After waiting about 15 min the waiter came back to take our food order, however we still had not gotten our drinks. We asked and said they were coming swiftly. Finally after 10 minutes later our drink orders came in. The cokes were flat but the Whiskey Sour was really good. I can't remember the waiters name but honestly she came by maybe 4 times the whole night and did not have the best attitude. The best thing about Ukiyo hands down was the food. Everything from the Ramen to the wagyu bao buns, just Wow. The wagyu was so crispy and just melted in your mouth. The ramen had amazing flavor profiles and was perfectly spiced. We also ordered the Chicken Karaage and this was so tender with the citrus mayo. This was also pretty big so were easily filled with all these dishes. I have mixed feelings about our visit to Ukiyo. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could give half stars. A large party came in before my group of 2, so we had to wait awhile before we were even acknowledged. Thankfully we were seated fairly quickly after that, but overall we found service quite slow. The place is tastefully decorated, but I found it dark and the music was quite loud. It was not overly busy (late lunch on a Saturday) but the music made it hard to hear the server. Ukiyo is marketed as an izakaya which are typically inexpensive and unpretentious. However, I feel like this place is going for a more upscale vibe than what you would find in Japan. I found the prices high for what we received, and our dishes were hit or miss. I was disappointed that the halibut soba wasn't available, but my party ordered a variety of other options to try. We had: Wagyu buns Charred edamame Chicken karaage Gyoza Tonkotsu ramen Tempura bread pudding The wagyu was well seasoned but extremely chewy. The chicken karaage wasn't as crunchy as we would have preferred and was rather bland. The ramen was ok - the best part was the broth. The gyoza was pretty good, but the overall winners were the edamame and tempura bread pudding. Our bill was over $100 and neither of us left full. We had a mixed experience at Ukiyo in Savannah. While the food itself was good, the service really took away from what could have been a great meal. We waited an extremely long time for both our drinks and food, and it was hard not to notice that our waitress spent nearly three hours chatting with another table and socializing with coworkers instead of checking on us. That said, the food was definitely a highlight. We ordered the ramen, kimchi rice, wagyu bao buns, and a sushi roll, and everything we tried was flavorful and well prepared. The service was really great, the server was super knowledgeable of the saki menu and helped me pick out my drink. The food came out quickly and the vibes were really great. It's a small space but there is a lot going on and the flow is nice. Everything was tasty and the wontons were our favorite. The hamachi crudo was fresh but it was very basil forward. The only dish I wasn't crazy about was the Mentaiko Mazemen - it had very little flavor for the variety of ingredients, so it somehow ended up tasting just like buttered noodles. This place badly wants to be higher class than it actually is, which is funny bc a true izakaya is the exact opposite of the pretentiousness it gives off. I get that it's closer to downtown, but that's exactly it, but it's across the street from hip and lowkey Starland Yard and doesn't fit into those vibes. We came in without reservations on a Sunday night around 6 and was placed at the bar bc we didn't have reservations. All good there and to their credit the place did fill out by the time we were leaving around 730. Service at the bar was prompt and friendly. Sake selection is pretty good, Japanese whiskey selection is a joke when combining selection with prices. Menu was varied enough, and props for having stuff like okonomiyaki and takoyaki (had this, good but not great). I ended up getting the tonkotsu ramen which was solidly above average and featured some really good chashu. However at $21 a bowl, wouldn't be in my top 5 in Atlanta with prices upwards of 20% less. At the end of the day this place is fine, really, but just that. I wouldn't come back on my own accord but if friends wanted to I would accommodate. read more

The food was super super tasty. My favorites were the scallop dish and nigiri sampler. Our server was friendly and quick. The design inside was cool and temperature was just right. The only thing they missed on was, when the food runner came with our nigiri sampler, he quickly dropped it without explaining to us what each fish was. While it was delicious and some were fairly obvious, when you are paying $40 for a dish, I think that deserves an explanation. I visited Ukiyo for dinner on the 30th of December and we were first turned away because we didn't have a reservation. I think they are just busier in certain seasons, but be sure to make a reservation beforehand to be on the safe side. I got the Tokonsu pork ramen, Spicy salmon roll, and the gyoza. All of the food was great. I especially liked the gyoza. I liked that the provided chili bombs to add flavor to the ramen broth. Ideally, I would have preferred a more flavorful broth, but having the chili bombs was a good alternative. I think the best part of this dining experience was the ambiance of the place. I would definitely come back to this spot, and I would like to try more of their sushi options next time. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Savannah, definitely one I return to every so often. My fav dishes are the bao buns and the garlic fried rice. Two of the things we ordered on the menu was sold out for the night. (Our reservation was 730 on a Sunday) Our family of 5 arrived hungry and ordered a bit of everything. We enjoyed our dished but the main thing we came for was the ramen and it fell short of our expectations. Our noodles were hard and not cooked all the way. First time at ukiyo, here's how it went: The drinks were fine, service was good (the food actually came out suspiciously quick, not sure if that's a good thing or not). Really the issue was the food, quality did not match pricing at all. Chicken karaage - marinade/coating had an overpowering lime taste and came with a black bean mayo (not sure the point of the black bean addition, didn't elevate the flavor or anything) Gyoza - gyoza itself tasted good but it was lukewarm when it got to the table, the red sauce under it almost had a ragu taste to it. Black dragon roll - this was the worst of the sushi, definitely had a hand torch used on it to create the charred effect and had a strong unpleasant after taste. Samurai roll and white dragon roll - not too bad but for $20 for a roll you're going to use imitation crab? The sushi rice was also either overcooked or a few days old not sure which. Maybe scale back on the massive amount of tobiko used on each plate and use real crab. Also, the check was brought to the table but then you have to complete the transaction on a tablet that the server doesn't leave at the table just awkwardly has to hold out until you're finished (totally not their fault seems like a management decision) read more

Visited savannah last week, and my partner and I are so fortunate to have stumbled across such a gem. The whole experience felt like a performance. I love the open kitchen, and witnessing all the dishes come together by this team of chefs was breathtaking. Our service was friendly and helpful from start to finish. The comradery and hustle throughout all the staff members truly impressed us. We sampled as much of the menu as we could handle. Our hamachi sushi roll was full of flavor, we shared a ramen and ended up fighting over the last bits, and the buns were so flavorful that we decided to order another one for the road. With such a young staff, one wouldn't expect such dedication and attention to detail. We will definitely be making ukiyo a mandatory destination for every visit to savannah. When we left at 645, I heard the hostess tell someone it was a 45 min wait, so it is definitely best to have reservations. Our meal was amazing and so was our waitress although I unfortunately cannot remember her name - she took the time to explain details on the menu and make sure we saw the specials (requires a qr scan on menu) and was very friendly. We got the pork belly bao buns which I would recommend to anyone but the star was the Magma Lobster roll - overflowing with lobster meat, tempura and fried onions. We came in with intensions of ordering ramen, but she suggested we order plates to share. We were only two people but decided to follow her suggestion. Big mistake. The plates on the menu are not tapas style like she said. They were bigger portions. We only ordered four items and they barley fit on our table. It wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that that food was just okay. If you check out this restaurant I recommend sticking to the ramen. I didn't get to try it, but it looked good.
