Menu is pretty standard, ordered veggie tempura appetizer, a roll, sushi nigiri combo, and some drinks. Everything was quick, and fresh, but the rolls and the nigiri were both pretty heavy on the rice. Tempura was a little overdone for my liking too, but nothing was bad. Overall not a bad experience, but for a ~$90 sushi outing, I need it to hit, and with a handful of other sushi spots in the immediate area, I can't say I'm committed to this one in any way. read more

I've been going to Kansai for take out sushi for a few years now and they are always quick and consistently accurate with their orders. I think their rolls are okay but nothing spectacular. This place is an easy "go to" for me because of the convenience of location and the consistent decent quality of ingredients. I would not say this place if my favorite but it's a place I can always count on filling my sushi need. I hadn't visited this place for a long time, and it's still an excellent restaurant with great value for money. The dining area is a bit small, but it doesn't take away from the quality service. I ordered the combo bento, and the teriyaki beef was absolutely delicious. The fish cake was neither dry nor greasy, and the tuna sashimi was cut into generous portions and tasted incredibly fresh. Kansai will always be some of my favorite sushi. I have been to all their locations at this point and they all share the same standards: good quality sushi, big portions and good service. Went here on a weekend night and surprisingly no one was in there when we first got there. I ordered a tekka maki roll and the special roll katie 2 and my friend ordered a philadelphia roll. I just felt like the rice was way too gummy and tasted like mush. Maybe it was just like an off day or maybe they just cooked it for a little bit too long or added too much water, but it was not good. I had to take the rolls home. So I could at least like fry up the rice. So that way it was better texture. The workers they were very nice but unfortunately, the rice itself, we'll be the reason why I wouldn't come back. Found this place by accident. I ordered online to pick up at a different sushi place with a similar name. I paid through a food app so I was committed. I took the 10 minute extra drive and it was well worth it. This is my new sushi spot. My rolls were fresh well portion and simply delicious. I was able to finish my leftovers for lunch the next day and I can never eat day old sushi, but it was still delicious the next day. This restaurant is small , cozy, cute date spot. Also, there was an unpleasant smell of the restaurant-- not very pleasing when you're trying to eat. On the other hand, the food was good! Ordered a salmon teriyaki bento with mixed tempura and chicken teriyaki bento box with fried gyoza. I would prefer more salmon in the salmon bento because the slices were a little thin. There was plenty of chicken in the chicken teriyaki bento. We also got the kansai roll that was very flavorful and filling. The portions were large and we definitely left full. As far as the other two, which have eel, they tasted good but were full of bones. I eat three different pieces and had a total of five bones. I threw the rest away and wasted money which kinda made me upset. I just can't eat sushi with bones in it. The Udon was good. I didn't really care for the yakisoba but I did eat it all. Came here tonight with a friend as Hayward is halfway between us in Walnut Creek and San Mateo. Although tonight was our first time at Kansai's Hayward location, I have previously ordered from Kansai's Concord location via DoorDash. I'm not super familiar with Hayward but when Kansai came up on my Yelp feed, I remembered how much I liked the sushi at the Concord location. We came around 5 pm and were seated immediately. I had the rainbow roll and the salmon maki, both of which were super tasty. My friend got the James and CA rolls, which she liked. Service was friendly and we liked the candy that came with the bill. The space is small but don't let that discourage you from trying Kansai! FYI, the bathroom is hidden underneath the curtain. When I asked, they pointed to the kitchen door and I thought the bathroom required walking through the kitchen. Luckily the one of the chefs redirected me to the bathroom. The area where the curtain was seemed tight so I thought I was in the wrong place. Better signage would be helpful so people don't make the same mistake as I did.
