Kansai was such a pleasant surprise while traveling in Oakland. I was looking for a sushi place but couldn't find a decent option when I stumbled upon Kansai due to their huge parking lot. Parking is hard to come by in the Bay Area so I was natually drawn into this. Their sushi is top notch as to be expected in the Bay Area. I got the sashimi combo as well as a toro special they were running. Everything was super fresh and the cuts were extremely generous. The shrimp tempura was also very good. I was pretty disappointed. I ordered the 10 piece nigiri mix which came with a side salad and soup. If I'm being pretty transparent, the soup was old and the salad wasn't the best either. It was drenched in sauce and didn't really have anything special about it. My boyfriend ordered the beef teriyaki bento box which is probably the best thing here. As soon as I got the Nigiri mix, I smelled a very distinct odor that came from the fish. I honestly tried to ignore it, but by the second bite, I couldn't handle it anymore. I kindly ask the waiter if they could take back the plate and they immediately became very hostile with me regarding payment. I honestly didn't want anything anymore because of how disgusting the fish was, so I didn't ask for anything else, but they're concerned was more on the payment and and making sure that I paid for it even though I only had two pieces. read more

The food is amazingly delicious, honestly. I've gotten a lot of different things and they always taste amazing. The lion king is probably their most popular one. Service has always been impeccable, I've went there at least 10 times and not once did I have a bad experience with the servers or service. Came here for a late night dinner after a show and they open until 11:30 pm on a Sunday! It's hard to find a restaurant that opens late these days! We came and left here by Uber. We didn't wait very long for a table and the place was bustling at 9:30 pm! The service staff was very attentive and kept coming by to ask how everything was going even though they were busy. I ordered the two item combo bento box and had the salmon sashimi with salmon teriyaki. Everything was tasty and made to perfection. Genuinely so disrespectful. They decided to double book two large groups on the same night (THE OTHER GROUP HAD 70 PEOPLE WHAT???) and made us go inside (which i dont really care for). We made a reservation for 25 but they thought we had 11 just because 11 people showed up first (which makes sense not everyone is gonna show up at the same time). I ordered through uber eats and the order arrived cold. Not warm-ish or cooled-off but COLD. The packaging clearly wasn't designed to keep food warm for delivery and neither salmon teriaki nor gyoza warm up well in a microwave. Called Kansai and spoke with the manager who took no responsibility and didn't attempt to establish any type of rapport (this woman needs to be trained to work with humans). She fully blamed the driver, which is just sad. She also told me to go ahead and write this review. I shared 5 rolls with my boyfriend which ended up being too much for us, the rolls are actually huge, especially if you get a special or deep fried type. For some reason, I thought the deep fried section just meant there would be crispy panko bits, but no, this means the fish is deep fried. It honestly made some of them taste like meat balls, a bit disorienting for me and we were not a fan of those. Otherwise the rice and fish seemed fresh, and our meal even came with complimentary miso soup. Finally came here with my parents to dine-in during happy hour after a couple years of the pandemic! Atmosphere: Very welcoming. Quite clean. Good ambiance. Service: Staff greeted us at the door and immediately sat us down. They have indoor seating as well as outdoor. They do require proof of vaccination to dine indoor but you can dine outdoor if you do not have your vaccination card. The staff was very friendly. She frequently checked on us to make sure everything was okay since we were the only ones dining outside. She even turned on the patio heater per request. Most importantly, our food arrived pretty quickly. Food: We went during happy hour. We ordered the fried squid, takoyaki, spicy volcano roll, dragon roll, john roll and wendy roll. Everything was delicious! The fried squid was very fun to eat. The takoyaki didn't have too much octopus inside but it still tasted pretty good. All of the rolls were amazing! Great price! Came in on a random Saturday night to satisfy a sushi craving and got to try items from their happy hour menu. Kansai has lots of fun rolls - my favorite is probably the John or Lion King roll. It was pretty packed, so service was a little slow at times but still very accommodating. I had ordered the salmon belly special (so good!) but I had to remind a waiter twice for it to come out. The interior is very modern, making it feel like a lively location at night. I love that they open until past midnight, definitely a spot I would come by after a party. I love kansai & am a regular there, but after today I'm so cool off this place. As I was sitting on the bench, not the one when you first walk in but the bench behind that, a COCKROACH was crawling out of the bench! It wasn't until the people next to us that yelled it was coming out the bench and ran off. My friend sitting across from me saw it as well and described it as BIG. It was literally inches away from my leg. Well we lost our appetites and wanted to leave. Asked the manager to come out and he never came out just told us we didn't have to pay. The fact that he didn't come out to look for himself makes us believe he knows about his infestation & doesn't care. Hate to see what the kitchen looks like back there. We grabbed a late lunch here on a weekday. The food and decor is average. The Kanzai roll didn't look anything like it pictured on the menu. The fried soft shell crab was a bit on the dry side. The salmon sashimi that came in my bento was of a decent size but the flavor was a bit off. The sashimi looked fresh and tasted ok just that the flavor was not there. The tempuras was good. Not sure if they still have it, but when it's full priced the quality of the rolls are just not worth the $$. The Triple S was the best one. The gyoza was pretty good too. John Roll, ryan roll, are my two favorite go to rolls. I've tried a few of the others and sometimes its a hit or miss with the rolls, Make sure you ask for spicy mayo and unagi sauce on the side. It makes the sushi even better. When I crave sushi, this has been my go to place . There's free parking on the side of the restaurant. And a couple at the front. The lion king is decent here but the sauce on top can be a bit overwhelming after few bites. Overall, I like coming here. It's quick and convenient.
