Service was phenomenal!! Everyone worked together to make the experience seamless. The aesthetic was adorable and really liked how clean everything was. Even though it was almost an 'open kitchen' it was nice and quiet! The reservation notes didn't make it through, but they tried to make it right quickly with a baby chair and wishing us a happy birthday. The food was good but not great. We had both versions of the chicken wings and the szechuan was not spicy at all so that was a bit disappointing bc we were told the lime wedge was used to tone down the spice and balance the flavor. The okonomiyaki salad was awesome, as well as the potato cheese croquette. The jjajjang bolognese had a good flavor profile but I couldn't tell if the noodles were instant and that automatically downgraded the overall appeal of the dish for me. The bossam came with 4 oysters and a pork bone broth that was probably my favorite thing there. Overall would likely go again if someone wanted to but definitely doesn't fall into a "craveworthy" category.

Found another great spot to dine in Oakland! Our party of four made a reservation for Thursday evening, and the place was pretty busy -- always a good sign. Everything we ordered that night was delicious. My absolute favorite was the oxtail jjigae, and the desserts were just as impressive. If you're a foodie like me, you won't be disappointed. Definitely give this place a try!

Came here to celebrate a birthday! Glad we made a reservation. The aesthetic of the place made dinner feel special. We ordered chicken wings, the hamachi handroll, and the wagyu ssam. The chicken wings were delicious with just the right amount of crisp. However, the size of the chicken wings were much smaller than expected. The wagyu was deliciously seasoned. All of it was beautifully presented. The prices and portion sizes definitely make this place a spot for special occasions rather than just a casual weekday meet up.

Came here on a Saturday for lunch and was impressed right away by the exceptional service and sleek, modern ambiance. The space feels thoughtfully designed and welcoming. It's definitely a great spot to sit and catch up with friends. We visited during lunch, so the menu was limited. The concept is interesting and creative, but unfortunately the execution didn't fully hit the mark for us. We ordered the pho ramen, which leaned more like bun bo hue with ramen noodles. The flavors were decent, but it didn't feel particularly cohesive or memorable. We also tried the oxtail curry which was ok. The curry itself had a nice nutty depth, but I wish the oxtail had been more tender. Overall, great service and atmosphere, but the food didn't quite match the level of the hospitality. Would be open to giving dinner a try to see a broader menu.

What is there not to love about a Japanese / Korean blend. Made a reservation for an early-ish dinner on a weeknight. I love the interior of the place. It gets such beautiful golden hour sun and the decor is cute with all the little cats around. My friend and I shared the yukhue onigiri, the maguro carpaccio, and the Dungeness crab dup bap. First of all, onigiri was 10/10. Deliciously crunchy and chewy and the flavor of the beef was just right. Could eat 10 of those if it weren't so expensive lol. Carpaccio was good as well. Loved the sauce and toppings. Dup bap had huge chunks of Dungeness crab which was delicious. Service throughout the meal was super friendly and we had a great experience. Only gripe is the price since the items are on the pricier side. But their menu sounded so good we had to try it haha. Perhaps I'll be back to try the other things

I had the opportunity to dine at Oken for a friend's birthday and was lucky enough to try out almost every item on the menu. Dishes here are all meant to be family style so you will benefit greatly by coming with a large group so you can try out more items. Of the items that we ordered, there were a few highlights for me. First, the yukhwe onigiri -- crispy rice ball, beef tartare, soy, quail egg, perilla, was the dish that everyone nominated as their favorite dish. The onigiri is deep fried so it has a crunchy, beautiful golden outer shell. The soft texture of the diced beef tartare and creaminess of the quail egg made for the perfect bite. In hindsight, we would have gladly traded out some of the other dishes we ordered for more onigiris for the table. Another dish I personally enjoyed a lot was the okonomiyaki salad. If you enjoy okonomiyaki, you will love this version of it, which has a thin egg omelette across the top of the lettuce and is generously dressed with okonomiyaki sauce, Kewpie mayo and a mountain of bonito flakes. The Kurobuta pork belly -- a.k.a. the "wagyu of pork", is well-seasoned, deliciously tender with a great balance of fat, and holds up well to the strong flavors of the sauces. The other crowd favorite was the braised beef cheek dup bap. The beef cheek was tender enough that it could be easily broken into sharable pieces with just a spoon as we stirred the bowl of rice around. The egg yolk was a nice finishing touch on top, adding yet another level of richness to the already rich dish. The only improvement is possibly more rice, and heating up the stone pot a bit more so it could develop some crispiness on the bottom. If I were to come again with such a large group and order again, there's a few things I'd do differently. First, I would skip out on the Wagyu kalbi short rib saam and coppa dwaeji saam. Our group of 10 ordered two of each so everyone could have a bite. Although the meats were both delicious -- i.e. the pork steak and short rib was perfectly cooked, I think the group would have been better allocating the ~$200 towards other entrees we enjoyed more. Next, the gochujang glazed ocean trout was delicious -- melt in your mouth, fork tender, but it wasn't something that was so unique that you could only find it at Oken. Two last dishes that I would skip out on were the fried chicken -- with choices of either Sichuan spicy or sweet soy glaze, and the triple cooked crispy potatoes -- served with curry mayo. It's not the either dish was bad, but I feel like you can get better Asian fried chicken elsewhere (i.e. even at OK's Deli) -- that's butchered in smaller pieces and easier to consume, and the crispy potatoes were a bit mundane. For a dollar more than the potatoes, the maitake -- or "hen-of-the-woods", mushroom tempura with truffle crème fraîche is an obvious no-brainer as a substitute both in taste, value, and creativity. The only big miss was the "hwe dup bap" -- a Korean sashimi rice bowl reminiscent of a chirashi bowl with salmon roe, ocean trout, mixed lettuces, shiso, perilla, Koshihikari rice, sesame oil, and nori. Across the board, everyone felt like the sauce mixed in was far too spicy and overpowering compared to the subtle flavor presented in all the other dishes we had ordered. The dish arrived at the opposite end of the table so I couldn't get a good look at the details of sauce or quantity that was mixed it, but the sauce tasted like some variation of sriracha. Oken is definitely a nice spot to celebrate a birthday or special occasion, as opposed to a casual week day dinner. Staff and service here are both top-notch. I am very impressed by the OK's Deli team who put together this venture and would love to come back in the future to see how the menu evolves.

Has quickly become a favorite for dinner, and so excited that they are open for lunch now! Great service and great ambiance inside. The outside of the restaurant is deceptively simple/plain. The inside is lovely. Good for smaller groups.

This incredibly busy follow-up to a beloved lunch counter in Oakland impresses. Some of the bites are among the best on the East Bay (don't skip on the onigiri tartare or the make-your-own-hamachi handrolls). It's pretty typical that restaurants shine more in their small-bite menu, and the mains here were pretty good (I enjoyed the kalbi more than the oxtail stew). Service is excellent, and prices are fair given how full you'll be by the end of the meal. The place itself is quite loud, and its a narrow room so expect to have to talk loudly to hear your dining companions. Reservations are strongly recommended, and insist on a table further back.

It was good to try Oken but I was not impressed by the food. For those who are more cost-conscious, it's a high margin establishment. Food: B: I wanted to like it more, but I found it to be very overpriced for inventive, authentic Korean and Japanese food that was more modern and with a higher degree of presentation. Service: C+. It was good, not spectacular. Not much in the way of explanation or recommendation. We were offered still or sparkling and we selected the later, and it up being 2 bottles at $8 a bottle with no heads up before we switched to tap. I ordered a pint of Asahi, and we were given a large bottle of Asahi which cost $14/bottle before tax and tip. Ambiance: B-. The pace was fast, like a diner. We ordered dishes and they were out in minutes, so to me that's not coursing it out, rather premade. We were in and out of there in 60-minutes, which surprised me. Not too relaxing to be honest.

Tried this Korean restaurant for lunch with friends. A compact menu and since we like to eat, we ordered 3 out of the 4 entrees and the miso soup to share. Miso Miyugook was comforting and fulfilling with more in the soup to warm your tummy. Loved the Coppa Cut Bulgogi and Ox Tail curry. Nice flavors. The Hwe Dup Bap is very spicy. We ordered extra rice to be able to eat it. I would suggest asking for the sauce (assuming Gojuchang) on the side to control how much you mix in with the dish as even my friends who generally like spicy thought it was hot. But it was yummy nonetheless. No desserts at lunch time but we were full! A nice addition to College Avenue. Street parking.

Came to Oken on a Friday and had the most amazing meal. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. We ordered the maitake tempura, hamachi hand roll set, potato cheese croquette, waygu kalbi short rib ssam, and mentaiko pasta. Everything came out very timely with great presentation. You could taste that all the ingredients were very quality and all the food came out tasting delicious. All the staff were so friendly and attentive. Oken is a perfect spot for date night, casual dinner, or any celebration.

Rolled in on a super last-minute reservation and got seated at a communal table, which was expected, but it was actually really comfortable. They gave each party plenty of space so it never felt crowded or chaotic. Every dish we ordered went crazy. The wagyu kalbi short rib ssam was rich, tender, and packed with flavor. The oxtail jjigae was deep, comforting, and perfect for sharing. Do not skip the okonomiyaki salad. It sounds simple but it absolutely hits and balances everything out. Service was locked in the whole night. Attentive, friendly, and timed perfectly. Open kitchen adds to the vibe too. You can smell everything cooking and it just builds the anticipation. If you're into thoughtful, high-quality food with a chill but elevated East Bay energy, Oken needs to be on your list. Definitely coming back.

Genuinely one of the best restaurants I've dined at this year -- and I eat out a lot! Great spot for a date night. We ordered lots of apps and one main: - Miso Caesar Salad - so, so delicious. My partner and I still talk about it sometimes in passing. It probably helped that it was half parmesan cheese - Hamachi handroll - it was fun to make our own handrolls, and the sauce was packed with flavor - Maitake tempura - perfectly fried. Light on seasoning but paired well with the dipping sauce - Big eye tuna tartare - we were fighting to see who would finish this. I wish the nori chip was bigger! - Hwe dup bap - this was the only item that we likely wouldn't order again. It was good, but nothing too special The restaurant space is tight and intimate. Remember to make a reservation before swinging by! I was turned away the first time when I didn't make a reservation.

This time, we ordered a few dishes to try - the classic sesame paste noodles, Shan Dong chicken, the fried rice with shrimp, and the hot spicy eggplant. Since we did order delivery on a busy Saturday night, it took a little over an hour for our food to arrive. The food was expertly packed and we were given plenty of utensils and napkins. The sesame paste noodles are one of my favorite dishes here, there's a balance of sweet and salty offered in the creamy sesame paste sauce that's so addicting. I've always been a big fan of the hand-pulled noodles which are thick, bouncy and chewy. The Shan Dong chicken is deep fried and coated in a delicious sauce. It is more of the sweeter side if you're looking for something that's spicy. I appreciate that we were given large pieces as well! The fried rice with shrimp is amazing - I love the crunch of the green onion, the softness of the fried egg, and the texture of the rice and veggies which weren't soggy and still held a nice bite. Last but not least, the hot spicy eggplant was a great choice because it's usually the trickier dish to cook as eggplant can turn really soft and mushy. I was delighted that with the way it was prepared, the large eggplant pieces still held a tender texture that did not fall apart. I also enjoyed the sauce that was paired with the eggplant, which is oyster-sauce based and added a pleasant sweetness as well. I'm always looking forward to my next visit and I love supporting Shan Dong!

We ordered noodles, dumplings, some cold dishes and omitted egg in the veg dishes for the vegans. Everyone had something to eat and honestly for how much we ordered, it's tough to say there's anything you might not want to order. Just go with your gut! We came here after running the Oakland Marathon and left very happy and satisfied. (apologies for not being specific on what we ordered. Getting right to it, 4 stars because it's so affordable! However, there are some things I want to…read morepoint out that would actually make this spot more of a 3 star visit. 1. The attached parking garage charges $2/every half hour. Granted, this is no where near SF parking rates, it's still an additional fee. Street parking is super hard to find, and the streets are hectic, but you can test your luck (and patience). They use little tokens now that you have to pay for before exiting. Make sure you hold onto it because a lost token will run you $48 for the day rate. 2. The spot is poppin. It's not a complaint, that's a great thing! However it's really small inside so if there's a wait, you do have to line up in a single file line along a divider wall, where you can watch diners eat. Right next to you is the take out line for BBQ orders. It can get really claustrophobic. Tables do move fast as they're quick to bring out food, however you may be asked to just share a table with someone else. They have a couple round tables for the communal dining, or larger groups (up to 8). This is an ideal spot for 2-4 people. 6+ may cause you to wait longer for seating. 3. The tap water tastes kind of weird. They bring you a hot cup of tea too but the herbal taste is a bit too strong for me. 4. The bbq items are just okay :( I did a 3 item bbq combo with rice for about $21. You get a generous portion of meat, rice and a few pieces of steamed Chinese broccoli (gai lan). No sauce to dip or anything, but they do have a black bean sauce on the table to use. The sauce is pretty salty though, so just keep that in mind when you're adding it on. No spicy condiments on the table unfortunately. The duck was decent, but the bbq pork was a bit too lean for me. It wasn't overly sweet though so that was nice. The roast pork wasn't crunchy at all!! For some reason, they thin sliced it, instead of cut it into cubes. I love roast pork for the crunch so this was disappointing. The skin was more chewy than crunchy. All of the meats were tender though! 5. Fresh shrimp rice roll was hot and steamy and the price is cheaper than some dim sum spots ($7.50 for this one i think). However, you also get less shrimp. The sauce poured on was also kinda thin, and not sweet or umami enough. The rice roll itself had a good chew though, silky but a little thick. It holds up well while eating. The proportion go shrimp to rice noodle is waaaay off though. 6. Wonton noodle soup was good! This seemed like the crowd favorite as most everyone ordered this. The noodle could have had a bit more chew to it, but the wontons were bouncy and the broth comforting. You get a couple pieces of chinese broccoli with this too which is nice. The service was efficient and our main server was nice. She spoke english and actually smiled back. They take card payment too, so that's convenient. You really get some bang for your buck here, but I'd probably stick to taking food to go.
