hands down the best sushi in evanston. Although blu (now futami) and koi have their high-class reputations, this is definitely the place to go. The maki is fantastic and its the restaurant has a great atmosphere. Kansaku is my favorite sushi restaurant in Evanston. I have been here twice now, and everything I have ordered has been excellent. They have a variety of maki rolls, and you really can not go wrong with any of them. My personal favorites are the Veggie Garden, the Dynamite, and the Creamy Lobster. Some of the best sushi in Evanston. Their food is good both in restaurant, and for take out. Their quality of fish is great, and they also have great dishes from the kitchen. Went here with a groupon. Did not make a reservation and had to wait a few minutes in the non-existant waiting area. After finally being seated, we put in our orders and the appetizers (miso soup and Gomae) came out pretty quick. Miso soup was average, typical miso soup and the gomae was pretty good. After our appetizer, we waited... and waited... and waited, and then about 40 minutes later, we finally got our sushi. The waitress apologized for the wait but still after a long day, we wanted to get our food, eat, and be on our way. We ordered the volcano roll, spicy squid, and tiger prawn. Volcano roll was the only roll we liked of the three. Tiger prawn had a pesto type sauce that was a bit over powering. Also ordered Uni which is always on key. Sushi tasted fresh but the long wait for food docks the first time visit. If I am ever back, I will update my review but as of now, this would not be my first choice for sushi. read more

went here for lunch today and they had plentiful and tasty specials. the place was not nearly as hopping as the jerk chicken place next store but had a few tables. the food was pretty standard for sushi. nothing that really wow'ed me, but nothing that i didn't want to eat. the gyoza tasted very korean, which i very much appreciated. not a bad option if you are looking for pretty standard sushi with good service. also, this restaurant is currently a part of the united mileage plus dining program. bonus! read more

Excellent food and service. We had the Fiesta roll (unusual, very spicy) and the Dragon roll (savory, with eel and tempura shrimp) followed by a couple of pieces of tamago sushi. All in all, a really good meal. I look forward to going back. read more

I know my sushi and its pretty average here and overpriced for what it is. I like that they have low carb rolls (lollipop and citrus spring) that are wrapped with cucumber or rice paper, but they are pretty small and 12-13 dollars which is really expensive. I like their sashimi platter and that they serve it on ice but it is very overpriced for just plain sashimi, with no special fish added. The main reason I come here is for 5 dollar martinis on mondays and tuesdays, which are all good and very strong. Its a nice ambience to go with friends for martinis, and thats pretty much the only reason I would ever go. A lot of the appetizers are pretty good also, just still really expensive compared to any other sushi place in evanston, and just similar quality. read more

One of the few places I'd go for sushi! This is a casual place, good for groups and dates. I took one star out as few of their sushi rolls that I've tasted (maybe 2 of them, forgot which ones) are not quite good. Otherwise, they have other selections to choose from. Street parking around here could be hard, depending on what day and time you go, so plan ahead. read more

In terms of Evanston sushi places, Kansaku is alright. There's nothing wrong, per say, with their sushi: it is fresh and generally good-tasting. However, the menu is pretty overpriced compared to other, similar-quality sushi restaurants in Evanston. Best Sushi Spot on the north shore, and second to Sushi Wabi in Chicagoland. We didn't expect much out of this small, poorly located spot, but we enjoy their sushi on a weekly basis. Most of their rolls are excellent. Give it a try. read more

Went to Kansaku while visiting our son since it was very close to our hotel, and wow were we glad we did! This restaurants offers a delightful twist on the usual sushi fare. We didn't see a plain old california roll or spicy tuna roll on the menu...each maki had it's own unique variation. We brought along several of our son's friends, so we were able to try quite a few rolls and they were all fantastic! I cannot name a favorite, but some that we tried were the Volcano, Fiesta, Crab Crunch, Fire Dragon, Carnival, Tiger Prawn...all outstanding! Would definitely recommend with a group so you can try a bunch and not try to pick a favorite! read more

I've been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The service has always been prompt and friendly and the rolls are fresh and tasty. This place is average price for an upscale sushi restaurant. I also love the variety of rolls they have here, - there is a pretty decent selection. This would be a nice place to go on a date or out with friends. Feeling like sushi in Evanston? This place is worth considering. I wouldn't say it is the best sushi ever, but it is a safe option when you are indecisive on where to go. What makes this place so great is the menu selection. They have some great, non-traditional selections, that definitely excite the palate. My favorite maki is the Kamikaze and the Lake Shore Drive. The Kamikaze is spicy tuna topped with seared tuna. Tuna lovers, how could you go wrong with this one? The Lake Shore has a little Mexican flair with cilantro and jalapeno included in the roll. The sushi was fresh and the service was great. It is definitely a place I would go back to. read more

If this restaurant could get negative stars I would give them. Worst dining experience EVER. Sat there for an hour and then the waitress told us she forgot to put in our order. They then presented us with the bill comping our appetizer and we left. You would think that they would apologize and then bring us our food that we were waiting for, not to mention STARVING. Unbelievable. We had been their once before and there service was horrendous but we figured we would give them one more chance. Two strikes and KANSUKU is out. DO NOT EAT THERE. The food is definitely not worth terrible service. Better sushi at Sashimi Sashimi and better service at Koi. Stay away from Kansuku. read more

I love this place. This isn't where I go for a quick, inexpensive sushi lunch, but where I go when I want a delicious and romantic yet not pretentious date with my husband or girlfriends. this place gets only one star because while the food was delicious, the service was insulting and offensive. it took a while before we were asked for our drink order. it was a friday night, but the the restaurant was not even half full. first ding. put in our apps and sushi rolls order. our food was brought out and we were basically left to our own devices. the waitress never returned to check in on us until there were about 3 pieces of sushi left. the water guy was way more attentive than our waitress. we should've left him the tip. when we received the bill i noticed it seemed rather large. we had a groupon and i was surprised. upon further inspection, i noticed an added 18% gratuity for our party of 3. we read the fine print of the groupon - no, no added gratuity. there was nothing on the menu about added gratuity. we called the waitress over. she stuttered a half-ass explanation and then offered "most people find it easy" but acknowledged it was not the restaurant's policy or required by the groupon. when we asked her to remove the gratuity she copped an immediate attitude. second ding. when she brought the proper check back she aggressively handed it to us without a word. third ding. and decrease in tip, check. i can't help but think this place is racist. i observed other patrons get attentive service while me and my two black female friends were barely attended to. the slyly added gratuity was insult to wound. i will never return and i encourage anyone who demands that the place they patronize treat their patrons as humans not give this place any business. spread the word. read more

This is the best sushi I've tried in the Evanston area. My fiance and I like it so much we've been back three times and we only first tried it a couple months ago. The fish is fresh and has lots of flavor. I've had hamachi nigiri as well as salmon both were fantastic. My fiance had mackeral (saba) and says that was quite good as well. As far as maki rolls, we have ordered the Volcano and the Fiesta. Both are really good and the fiesta is my favorite. My fiance's mom ordered a lettuce wrapped maki roll that I didn't really care for, but other than that everything there's been great. It was a pretty big relief after moving to Evanston and having some disappointing sushi experiences elsewhere. read more

Just had dinner here. I am glad to find a good Japanese restaurant in Evanston. We plan on returning many times. Prices were reasonable. Portions were good sized. I ordered Tempura Udon soup. Most restaurants skimp on the udon noodles. Not at Kansaku. Lots of udon noodles. Tempura was fine. My daughter ordered Tofu Katsu, cakes of lightly fried tofu topped with a sweet spicy sauce. She enjoyed it immensely. My husband ordered Chilean sea bass and at $22 it was a bargain. Topped with a sauce and what appeared to be very thin crunchy noodles(?). The crunchy topping paired with the soft flaky fish was very nice. We thought the dessert menu was decent but we don't go to Japanese restaurants for desserts. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the interior. I can say that I was able to see what I was eating and be able to hear my dinner companions. I had a very enjoyable dinner. I ordered carry out from here and was told 50 minutes on the phone. An hour and 20 minutes later, it still hadn't arrived. (I like 10 minutes from the place.) So I called and was told it was "leaving shortly." Twenty minutes later I got a soggy shirmp tempura roll and a too spicy spicy tuna roll. For a whole $25. What a waste. read more

Best sushi in Evanston, although that's not saying much, but a bit overpriced and service is ok.

The sushi was delicious, but the service was pretty awful. We went for a late lunch. There were only two other groups there and one server/hostess. She was not attentive to us at all. After we put in our first order, we wanted to get more sushi, so she gave us a menu, proceeded to suggest the most expensive item on the menu and then walk away. The only time she came back was after 2pm, only to inform us that the sushi bar closed at 2pm and that we needed to put in an order right then and there. After putting in our order, instead of simply apologizing for the delay, she felt the need to tell us that the chef was angry because he put multiple orders on one plate by accident and had to make sushi after the sushi bar was supposed to be closed. I don't see why that needed to be disclosed to the customer, especially since she could have informed us earlier that the sushi bar was about to close. On the way out, there was no "thanks for coming" or "have a good day" from the sever/hostess as she seemed more interested in getting off work. Like I said, the sushi was really good, but I don't plan to go there again. read more
