I was visiting my nephew at Northwestern and this place is so close to his dorms. It was full but we were able to get seating right away for 4 of us for dinner. Very closed to Wholefoods and the Northwestern University campus. Their food quality is absolutely beyond average. We order a Taiwanese beef noodles soup. It serves with at least 5 or 6 pieces of beef which is tender and juicy. The noodles are soft and full of flavor in the soup. Not too salty. Wood-ear salad is a must: flavor in vinegar and garlic and open your appetite. Seafood soup is also tasty and serves with a heating device for at least 20 minutes, which makes the seafood soup very very hot. Also ordered steamed pork dumplings which were absolutely tasteless. We tried soy, chili garlic oil but nothing helped. I've been to Shang Noodle many times. The food is good and prices match the quality. Service is average. Why the 3 stars? I dined in tonight and everything was expected. They use Toast as their check out system. And you pay directly on the handheld machine which is good and bad. Good because you control your credit card. Bad because you don't see the sub-total, only post-tax and the tip pre-calculation percentages are set post-tax. Tip should NOT be post-tax! We topped off the fantastic meal with some pork belly soup. Our server was great... letting us two, pull together two tables, due to the amount of food we ordered. Our waters were filled constantly, and we were checked-up on several times. BATHROOM REVIEW: There is a mens and womens private bathroom. In the mens, it was extremely clean and spacious and contained a urinal, toilet, and even a chair to chill at, if you're all about having a conversation in the bathroom, or just wanted to lounge in a bathroom. Good hip looking Chinese place with a cool vibe and intimate atmosphere. It's good for a cool dinner. Shang Noodle has a few spots including an Evanston location. Has something of an Americanized menu but that's not a knock. The prices are better than expected for a nice place like this. A lot of classic familiar Chinese American favorites are here. It's a nice change from the typical carryout Chinese restaurant. The prices are kind of higher, but the food is better and so is service. It has an older location in South Loop and there's another one in Streeterville for those eating in the city. This one that's located in Evanston one is newer, and fits in with the many Asian restaurants. Has a very nice bar where they can make fancy cocktails. Of course the food is the main attraction, and we chose a few favorites. We went here recently and I got the Kung Pao Tofu. It's about $15, but there was a lot of food. This had bell peppers, celery, dry red chilis, peanuts, and water chestnuts, and had quite a spice. It doesn't have a whole lot, but there's some vegetarian choices. There's also a sushi bar, and they make it all fresh. Find this on Davis Street near Chicago Avenue among many other cool looking cafes. It has better than expected prices. I was having one of those "ugh I need a mental health day" moments from work. You know the kind - stay in bed all day, still wearing PJs at 3pm, dozing on & off. I was extremely tired & in no mood to cook or warm up a single thing. What I did want, was a giant helping of wonton soup. I've always walked by Shang's & looked at their site online. Everything does look delicious, I just never had the time to dine in or I'd forget about it when wanting to order delivery. Everyone offers wonton soup, & I've had many, although my favorites are found in Chinatown. I wanted to stay home. Ordered through Door Dash & really, that's it. Just the wonton soup. Food arrived quickly & I was surprised by the size. It seemed smaller initially than I thought it would be. Once I opened the bag up, I was amazed. The container was full of wontons, the broth was outstanding, & this was the warm hug of soup I was waiting for. The dumplings had thin skins (which I prefer) & the filling was tasty. The broth isn't like others & I can now say, this is a new favorite. Even better because Evanston's not far from me. If you're feeling under the weather, glum, or just love wonton soup, give Shang's a try. For a dish that is only sauce and noodles, I wanted a bit more punch to the sauce. I have never had authentic cha Jane mein though, so that's just my opinion. My friends brought me here because they couldn't stop raving over their Taiwanese Noodle Soup. They said it reminded them of their favorite noodles when they used to live in the Philippines so of course, I had to try this new place out! First, the location looks small on the outside but once you come in, the aesthetic of the inside looks modern and spacious. I noticed there seems to be many students and locals alike who frequent the establishment, and that said a lot to me. The server was very quick to seat us and take our orders. She was efficient and friendly throughout our whole meal. On my first visit, I definitely had to try the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup even if it's still hot outside. I'm a big broth person and let me tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and finished everything until the last drop. The braised beef was so tender and I love the soft but bouncy consistency of the house noodles. It was great because it didn't get all soggy even after being soaked in the broth. This is the type of dish I would keep reordering in whatever season. For my second visit, I ordered the Cha Jang Mein and wow, I was blown away. Again, the house noodles paired well with the Korean black bean sauce. The sauce was a mild, delicious mix of savory with a slight hint of sweetness. Also, the portions were generous but I was extra hungry, so I finished all of it! My friend's son got the Pong Pong Chicken and my gosh, that's the type of chicken where one minute you'd be nibbling on one and the next, all you'll see are bones on your plate. The skin was so crisp and the sauce was hot and tangy! I could eat a plate or two of this by myself! If you want a delicious and hearty Asian meal to share with friends and family, you need to visit Shang Noodles! Parking was super limited on the streets but the extra walk was so worth it! The food was absolutely delicious -- generous portions, excellent flavors, and very fair prices. We truly enjoyed everything we tasted, and the quality of the dishes was impressive. However, the service needs improvement. Our order took about 50 minutes to arrive, which felt quite long. The restaurant was full, so at first we were understanding and didn't say anything. But when we noticed that several tables who arrived after us had already been served and finished eating, we decided to ask. The staff realized there was a mistake but only replied jokingly that "everyone is waiting," and then seemed to avoid our table. What really disappointed us was that one of our dishes was accidentally served to the table next to us, and the guests there had already touched and tried it before realizing it wasn't theirs. The plate was then taken back to the kitchen, and just a few minutes later, a very similar dish was brought to our table -- which made us a bit uncomfortable. We can't be sure if it was the same one, but it certainly felt awkward. Mistakes can of course happen, especially when the place is busy, but in such cases a polite apology and reassurance would make a big difference. After all this, they offered as a small soup for each of us and said sorry for waiting. Overall, the food was excellent and worth recommending, but the service should be more polite, careful, and respectful toward customers. Do yourself a favor. Go to this place immediately. The crispy chicken sizzling pot is something I dream about on a weekly basis. It is the only thing I ever order. Deep fried chicken pieces, cauliflower, green beans, potatoes, and mouth numbing Sichuan chili served over an open flame at your table. That rice never stood a chance. You'll want to wash it down with something. Fortunately, they also have good drinks. I like the passion fruit or mango green tea. They have bubble tea and coffee drinks as well, and everything is made to order. The ambience is also lovely. It's clean and well-kept. Pretty quiet. I have definitely studied here before. Came here for the first time on a whim for a Saturday night dinner around 6 PM. Got lucky because it was not full and we were seated immediately and were also able to find street parking. The menu is pretty simple with some classic traditional dishes as well as some that they have a unique take on. It is not too large with too many items but has a lot of the comfort food classics with noodles dumplings and a lot of hot pot selections. The portions are generous considering the price as well as the location in downtown Evanston. The food is cooked super fresh and hot for you and there is no hunting of seafood in the seafood hot pot. There was also no hunting for beef in the Mongolian beef. So this makes it quite tasty and pleasurable. I will definitely be coming back.
