Mike was a lifesaver and a total pleasure to deal with. It was my first time on the Garden Isle and I wasnt able to bring my bodyboard over from the mainland. All i brought with me were my swim fins and an extra bicep leash I had. I was looking for a legit bodyboard rental and the shops I had been to and/or the beach side rental shacks had boards that just werent up to par. I was down the road at Tamba buying tees and the guy there (thankfully) referred me to Kapaa Beach Shop when I asked if he knew of any places that had quality bodyboard rentals. He told me Mike at KBS rented Mike Stewart Science Bodyboards.... The look of shock on my face was probably photo worthy. I couldnt believe the type of place I had been looking for was just down the road. It was already my 2nd time in Kapaa by that point. Kapaa Beach Shop is on your right side along Kuhio Highway if you are coming from the Lihue area. It's right after Chicken in a Barrel BBQ. It has about 4 dedicated spaces out front in its gravel driveway. They rent everything from beach umbrellas, chairs, bicycles, diving and snorkeling gear... You name it. You need it for the beach, he has it. It was jamming with customers the both times I went there but Mike was gracious and helpful with all of us. I was able to rent a hybrid Mike Stewart Science bodyboard which I used at a few beaches on the island. It was great. Thick board with lots of float to it, making catching waves easier. It also came with a Gyroll bicep leash... It was like a setup I would gladly have every day back home. I'm thankful to Mike for the Aloha and just being super cool in providing a quality rental. We chatted it up a bit and you can tell he is legit and really knows his stuff. I HIGHLY recommend you go see Mike at Kapaa Beach Shop for all your beach rental needs. He is the man. Mahalos Mike! We came here on our last afternoon in Kauai. We wanted to spend the day at the beach. Because it was our last day, we couldn't use the beach chairs from our Airbnb. We came here to rent some. I believe it cost $10 per chair for the day (but it may have been $10 for 2 chairs). It was a short walk from here to Kapa'a Beach Park which was nice. When we were done, we just dropped off the chairs and were on our way. This was the perfect place for us to rent some beach chairs. They have lots of other beach stuff too. read more

Totally satisfied with our equipment and pricing at this shop, so glad we found it on yelp. Our first experience was renting bikes which was difficult considering this was a very busy week on the island. There weren't enough bikes available when I called however the owner was willing to call me back and hold them for us once available, all this without even asking for a credit card or pre-purchase. I was so happy they held the bikes for an hour while we drove in from Princeville. Riding the path and stopping along the way at the different beaches was one of the highlights of our trip while on Kauai. Our next stop at Kapaa Beach Shop was to rent some snorkels and boogie boards for our day in the Poipu Beach area. $6 for 24 hours of snorkel gear was the best I could find. It was nice getting sized with the correct fins and mask before leaving rather than just being given a bag with one size fits all crap. The gear was great and worked fantastic for us. The boogie boards were also top notch and for $12 for 24 hours you can't go wrong. If you are in the area looking for the best deal, equipment and service then you have to stop by Kapaa Beach Shop. It is super easy to find and they have an after hours drop off option if they aren't open. read more

tl;dr: Most disappointing snorkel rental experience from start to finish. Highly NOT recommended. You get can get higher quality snorkel gear and friendlier service for a better price at other local spots like Bob's. Long version: Originally, I decided to rent at Kapaa Beach Shop for two reasons: (a) it has great ratings on Yelp and (b) because I like to support small and family-owned local businesses. When I entered and stated my business, I was received with passive-aggressive mask-shaming as the guy who worked the front desk, barely interested at all in my presence, repeatedly told me he couldn't understand me. So far, nobody's had problems understanding me while I was wearing a mask but maybe he has indeed hearing problems, who knows? At this point, I was already ready to turn around again but I let it slide and swallowed my pride because I really wanted to snorkel at Anini beach and didn't want to lose precious time driving to another rental place. When the guy returned with the gear, the first disappointment was that, apparently, they only rent out long fins which are pretty impractical in shallow waters. The second disappointment was that he was so not helpful: No advice on how to use the gear or great places to snorkel in the area - totally different from other places I've been to. But maybe they don't know the area that well, who knows? Again, against my better judgment, I took the gear and drove up to Anini beach. There, the next 3 disappointments awaited me: First, both, the mouthpiece of the snorkel as well as the mask were covered with sand which made me question whether they even bothered cleaning the gear since the last rental! After having cleaned and sanitized the mouthpiece myself, I next noticed that the snorkel was not equipped with a float valve - no biggie but something you get at places like Bob's in their $12 package! Last but not least, they did not prep the mask with an anti-fog solution which ultimately rendered my snorkel adventure short. All in all, a waste of $16 and a really bad experience. My advice: stay away from this place! I honestly got no idea how they earned their great ratings. For snorkel gear, go to Bob's where you get higher quality gear as well as a better rental experience overall - plus you also save 3 bucks! P.S.: The only reason I'm giving 2 and not 1 star is that they agreed to let me return the gear after closing. read more

I called mid-afternoon and they said they were out of bikes. I said I only needed one beach cruiser and they said they could accommodate! I loved my turquoise green cruiser and rode it all up and down the bike path! It was only $10 for the whole day! And I purchased some great ocean safe sunscreen from them that really stopped my fair skin from burning! My boyfriend and I decided to do a quick getaway to Kauai. The island is so beautiful and peaceful with so much to see.. We got a lot done and was able to visit the main attractions. We had such a great time sight-seeing and enjoying what Kauai had to offer, that we forgot the main reason why we wanted to visit Kauai - was to ride the bike path. We heard many talks about it and good reviews. To make that happen, we decided to extend our stay an extra day just to bike the new bike path in Kapaa. We were so glad we did.. And even more glad we went with this company for our bike rentals. The owners Mike and Janie are such sweethearts. They are genuinely kind people. Upon initial inquiring about their bikes, Mike said he can reserve the right size bike for my BF and I so no one rents it out. After we checked out a few other places, we came back and decided to rent from them. Mike introduced me to a brand new bike. He said pick whatever that you like old or new same price. He even threw in a basket for me after noticing I had a large bag with me. We did the 10 miles bike path, and since we were done early we decide to cycle tour the town of Kapaa. Doing so made shopping so pleasant and convenient. We ended up spending and finding nice items at local shops and boutiques. We also were able to enjoy the popular shave ice from Ono Ono Shave Ice and able to park our bikes using a secure lock that Mike provided. We felt secured parking the bikes and was able to walk around snaking in and out of the nearby shops. Janie was pleasant and friendly also, she even greeted us while walking her dog on the bike path saying "oohhhhh nice bikes, you guys having fun?" she knew those bikes were from her shop. Overall, this was one of the best memories we took away from our staycation. We got to experience all this for just $10 for the day!! This place was recommended by our friend back home who frequently visits Kauai. It's super cheap and the owner is friendly , plus there's a German Shepard lounging in the shop. We choose our bikes and set them aside so we could go next door & get some lunch at chicken in the barrel. The owner was cool enough to not start our bike time till we were done eating. The bike path was about 3 1/2 miles and we stopped along the way & took a few pictures. The path was pleasant and just right for us. For 1 hour it was a total of $10.40 for 2 bikes. Beach cruiser rentals: 1 hour=$5.00 2 hours= $7.50 All day = $10.00 (till sunset) Great way to get some exercise and check out the beaches, we discovered Donkey Beach on our ride. read more

Drove an hour to get here and called ahead to say we were on the way and would get there 10min BEFORE closing. Didn't want to keep them so wanted to let them know what sizes of wetsuits we would be needing. Person on the phone said don't bother as they actually closed already, at 4:45. When I asked could they please wait until the posted closing time of 5pm (and let them know we had driven an hour to get there) they said they said no because they had a dinner invitation. PLEASE change your posted opening and closing hours to reflect reality. Otherwise it can really ruin a whole family's snorkeling plans. On our last day in Kauai we decided to spend the half day we had in the town of Kapaa and wanted to check out the bike trail along the coast. So glad we did. We got to the beach shop right as they were opening and the employee was so friendly and helpful in getting us set up with a bike. We decided to ride one of the two tandem bikes and this was a blast. The shop is so conveniently located next to the path that it was to get on and off and we were quickly on our way. Such sweet, helpful, knowledgeable people. Just loved them. I'm not a swimmer and he picked up on my hesitation right away and recommended we go to a spot more suited for novices (sorry I forget the name. I will edit later when I remember) and the spot was perfect. They were so helpful and patient (it takes patience dealing with our large, loud family - lol). We couldn't have found a better place. We were able to get everything we needed for a day at the beach and the prices were so incredibly cheap. By far the cheapest thing we've done here, including eating. Lol. They even let us park in their lot when we brought our equipment back so we could eat at Chicken in the Barrel next door. Great people.
