I visit Kauai every other year and Kapaia Stitchery is one of the first places I go to. I am a quilter and they have beautiful high-quality Hawaiian made batiks and Hawaiian novelty fabrics. The shop owner, Jean, is wonderful to work with and will do whatever she can to help. The staff at Kapaia Stitchery are also wonderful, especially Peaches. Love this shop! Amazing assortment of Hawaiian print material. I almost knocked off one star cuz of the blasé attitude of the crew there, offered no help at all, but then I didn't ask for any. And it's an attitude I've encountered a lot on this visit so I think it's become an accepted approach maybe to people considered haoles (I'm not) in general. But I get it. Despite this, the store is remarkable for quliters/crafters and very much worth a visit. read more

Visiting this store is a must for anyone who loves sewing or quilting. Large inventory of Hawaiian and Asian print fabrics in beautiful colors and great prices ($6.99 a yard). I can get into a lot of trouble in this store on my future visits to Kauai. I am kind of glad that my husband did not take me here till the end of my trip. If you like to sew, this is the place for you. Keep room in your bags for the stuff you will buy here. They have a ton of Hawaiian and Asian inspired fabrics. Hawaiian Quilting kits, patterns, cross stitch patterns, and fat quarters of assorted fabrics that will make you dizzy as you go through them. The Stitchery is a beautiful slice of island culture. Walking you, see amazing examples of Island quilters and you're greeted by the gals who work there with a big Island smile. You're quickly drawn to the vast selection of fabrics available. For reasonable prices you can be measured and have custom Hawaiian shirts sew and shipped to you. Prices ran about $85 per shirt. Quality is excellent and people are always commenting on my shirts. It's on the way down island so make it a stop when you're there. read more

Geoffrey and Mark have it right - if you want authentic shirts (or any other Hawaiiana which is stitched) you must stop at Kapaia. The Mrs and myself saw this place on a drive to Pt Allen for a boat trip, and we were pleased beyond word when we stopped in. While I was striclty forbidden from buying an Aloha shirt, I was amazed at the prices, workmanship, and the fact that they were'nt shipped in from overseas. Each shirt had great patterns, great workmanship, and great prices. I didn't see a shirt over $100 - but they all easily could have been if they were in a more "corporate" shop like Hilo Hattie, ABC, etc. What the Mrs and myself were happiest to see was the abundance of quilting samples, supplies, and finished quilts. We picked up a couple throw pillow covers and were very happy with what we bought. Julie was so personable and quite funny, we were very happy to support her. We're such fans that we've told all our family and friends about this place. It really should be your first stop if you're looking for stitched souvenirs! read more

This store is a great stop for people not even interested in crafts and quilting and needlepoint. They've got Cane Road (I think that's the graphic design firm) design t-shirts, and wonderful gifts to bring back home, like Hawaiian print tissue holders and aloha shirts. read more

This is an outstanding store for anyone who quilts. They have pillow and quilt patterns as well as full "kits" to make quilts. It is also a good place for really nice "Hawaiian" fabric for shirts. The discount fabric store in Lihue has a bigger selection but not nearly the print quality of the Stichery's fabrics. read more

This store is on the hwy near Lihue. I've always wanted to go in. Take the time to visit, even if you're not into quilts, crafts or sewing. They have such cool things to look at and a big selection of handmade items such as dresses, shirts, pot-holders, etc. Even my macho hubby liked looking at the quilts and fabrics! read more

This place is FANTASTIC...I am not a quilter but do sew. I have been wanting a Hawaiian quilt for years. Went into this store not expecting much, and boy I was so surprised. Not only did we find a wonderful quilt for our bed, but also walked out buying a good supply of fabric. My husband was even impressed and bought a couple of yards of fabric so I can make flags for our gazebo. I can't say enough good things about the shop. The prices on for the fabric was extremely reasonable and the selection of fabric, the best I've seen in years. The employees were nice, helpful and knowledgeable. I could spend hours in tis place and will be going there again the next time we are in Kauai.Or will be calling them when I need fabric for a sewing project. If there was a heaven for quilters, this would be it! I was blown away at the selection and beauty of this cute quilt shop in Kauai. The outside looks like a general store. There are many inspirational quilts hanging from the ceiling. The selection of Hawaiian fabrics was amazing. I had gone to Discount Fabric Warehouse and though I like that store very much, I just loved the feeling of the Kapaia Stitchery more. It felt cozy and homey. If I could live in that store, I would. What a wonderful find! I loved this store so much I went back two days later and bought more fabric and patterns. The incredible selection of beautiful and high quality fabrics was unbelievable. This cannot be a quick trip inside. Give yourself at least an hour or two to stroll every corner in this store. The staff was warm and friendly and so helpful. We shopped all over the island and online for an authentic aloha shirt made in Hawaii with little succes. We had driven past this shop at least a dozen times without stopping. We are glad we finally did! Faith was very knowledgeable, friendly, and talented. We quickly found a shirt that was better than anything else we had seen. It was an added bonus when we learned that Faith makes all of the aloha shirts in the store! The shirt looks great, fits perfectly, and is comfortable (plus my wife REALLY likes the way I look in it). They also have some beautiful display quilts that are truly works of art. Unfortunately the ones we wanted were not for sale. This is a must stop for Kauai, and the best place for the authentic aloha shirt. read more

I've had them make well over a dozen shirts for me over the years, maybe twenty but I don't want to go to the closet and count them. You pick the fabric, the buttons, etc and they make the shirt and will ship it back to you on the Mainland if need be. The shirts are dead solid perfect and the choice of patterns is stunning. Bought a $65 dollar kit and they had forgotten to include the most important piece - the needles. The owner was very accommodating and drove to the airport and left a packet of needles (along with a few lovely batik fat quarters) with the car rental facility so that I could work on my koi fish wall hanging project on the airplane. I'm new to quilting, but was encouraged by the staff and inspired by the large selection of Hawaiian and Japanese fabrics. I go for the abstract and geometric prints and they had plenty of them, with watery background colors to give them depth and contrasting colors to inspire your quilt designs. The fabrics washed up well - they held their color without a lot of bleeding and stayed true to their original shape. read more

The selection of fabric and handmade items way surpassed what I had expected. Not only that, the people here were so friendly and helpful. They gave me their card so I could call and order more fabric if I needed to for the quilt I was going to make. This is a must-do when we visit Kauai, right up there with snorkeling at Tunnels. Huge selection of fabric on rolls, from classic-kitsch Hawaiian shirt designs to bark cloth to intricate Asian-themed fabrics for half what they cost on the mainland, most around $7. (That's if you can find them back home!) This trip I found a half-dozen indigo fabrics that I'll make into quilts. There are also hundreds of quilt fabrics on bolts, as well as locally-made accessories like luggage tags, custom Aloha shirts and Hawaiian quilting kits and patterns. I love, love, love this store and I want to buy pretty much everything. read more

I wandered in here with my wife, and was impressed with the incredible inventory of fabrics. I commented to Faith, who was working the counter, that if there was a local tailor I could have make me a shirt, I would be happy to buy some fabric. She informed me that she could sew a shirt for me, and I expected to have it shipped to me in a couple weeks, since we only had a few days left on Kauai. Before we went to Kauai in September, we had planned to hopefully buy a quilt. When we arrived at Kapaia stichery, in the window we saw the quilt we wanted. But we looked thru their catalog and fabrics first. We decided to go ahead and buy the quilt in the window. I was concerned because the quilt was a queen size and our bed at home is a Cal king. I have bought many comforters in the past that really were too small for the bed. But the wonderful people at Kapaia stichery assured my that the quilt would be just fine if we had a bed skirt which we did. In less then a week after arriving home, our quilt came in the mail. It was perfect. We also got 2 pillow shams and a small decorator pillow(this was unexpected) to complete the look. Their quilts are made very generous in size and absolutely beautiful. I highly suggest that you visit the store for any quilting supplies or hand made quilts.. They are the best. read more
