I love this place and I go way out of my way to get there about once a week. I have been eating the delicious pastries (my favorite is cherry/cheese) but I just discovered their bagels (behind the counter) and schmeers (in the cold case). They are both delicious. The schmeers are very high quality--I've tried the salmon cream cheese and the veggie spread; the veggie spread is the best veggie spread I've ever had. I picked up some bread loaves here yesterday. It was easy to park and no wait when I went in the store. The bread I got was fabulous! It was my first time here but I will def be back to get more! The rye bread was great but the broccoli knish and the potato knish were pretty bad-flavorless, mushy, and gave me an upset stomach. I ended up putting butter and garlic powder on the potato knish just to get through the meal. Very disappointed by the experience. read more

If you haven't stopped by Kaplan's for their Jewish Rye, you shouldn't. More for me. Kaplan's has been a staple in the Philly area for a long time! My grandmother used to frequent this joint 50 years back! Maybe not this location, but you get the vibes. They have it all. From fresh rye bread, bakery sweets, and coffee too. Everything smelled so fresh and the joint only allowed two customers in at a time. Very safe given the Covid-Times. Recommend calling for tour order a day in advance as they make their specialty rye breads to order only. What we snagged: -Large Jewish Rye. So damn good and so fresh. It was gone in a day... -Various danishes -Various cookies. All came to sub $30. Can't beat the price. We'll be back to share this rye with many friends and family. Again, don't go here. Great crusty pumpernickel and even better seeded rye bread for $4 a loaf, slicing optional, highly recommend! Also bakes seedless rye and marble rye. Opens early 7 days a week like a good bakery should. Claims to be Philadelphia's oldest Jewish bakery. As others have noted, this is a very small sales room attached to an enormous commercial operation. I tried a Kaplan's cheese danish also, perfectly fine but not up to the standard set by that delicious bread. Next time I'll try the cookies. read more

This is an old fashioned bakery that celebrated their 100 year anniversary last year. The rye bread is the best I've ever had. It comes in several sizes, is sliced while you wait and freezes well. The pumpernickel and challah breads are also delicious. The cookies and pastries are yummy. The bagels are good too. Everything in here is good! They supply lots of stores and restaurants and have for years. The people are nice. We love talking to the ladies when we go which is about once a month! You can usually find parking by the park. If possible go a a weekday. read more

Super nice staff, really great prices, and excellent offerings! The bagels are the most affordable dozen bagels in town and have a great chewy quality to them- how bagels should be. They also have a ton of cookies and sweets that are sold by weight, and black and white cookies (my favorite nyc indulgence!). The challah is also always on point. The staff is super helpful, offering to help carry a big order down the block if you need a hand, and willing to put aside an order over the phone if you need to call ahead and pick up in your way to an event or work, etc. This has got to be my favorite low key bakery in Philly. read more

I drove 40 minutes to try this bakery based on a recommendation. I was excited to see Salt Sticks since I haven't had them in years. They were delicious and I also enjoyed the corn rye bread with garlic. My husband was happy with the black and white cookies Unfortunately they did not have any onion rolls and the raspberry horn I got was lacking. I bought bagels and I had a funny feeling. In addition there was no one in there. When I asked if they could cut them the one lady rolled her eyes so I told her to give them back. I got home and I tried them. A good bagel you can eat without toasting, nothing on them and they're delicious but these bagels wouldn't be good prepared in any way. They're soft but stale. The outside of the bagel is soft but when you pull a piece off it's not soft it's mealy and stale. Reminded me of a Wawa bagel in plastic wrap at the register. read more

Just a grimey commercial bakery with a storefront tacked on. I went here 3x out of convenience and that's gonna be it. Bagels are homogenous in texture like a grocery store bagel. Danishes were soggy and dense, like ones you'd find Saran wrapped at the checkout of a gas station. Coffee comes from a keurig machine. Probably not even rated for commercial use. If there is anything good at this bakery I don't know what it is. Everything tasted like 3 day old baked goods from a chain grocery. With so many great cafe options in the neighborhood this should be your absolute last resort. Staff was friendly at least. read more

Woke this AM in Norris Square alongside my partner, who eschews early morning bites. Hungry for some good sticky buns, I pondered rationalising a 90-minute drive to Ocean City for some made by MALLONS - my favourite, but decided instead to locally find some, which Kaplan's offered. I got a sticky bun, a blueberry Danish, and an apple strudel. I found the sticky bun to be not very sticky, sweet, or moist; I consequently won't get another from Kaplan's. The strudel was moist and tasty; I'd get it again. The Danish, however, was the best - sweet and moist; I recommend it (and the strudel) to others. Kaplan's also offers bagels (among other treats and breads), which I've yet to try. read more

I should have known not to trust a kosher bakery open on saturday. They didn't know what was parve or not and as someone with a dairy allergy, this meant I could eat almost nothing. Originally I was expecting a dine-in and to-go situation so I had planned on getting an everything bagel with lox spread and nothing more. Unfortunately the only cream cheese they can do for a single bagel is plain. In a moment of panic, I ended up getting a half dozen everything bagels and a tub of lox spread to go. Both were FANTASTIC. Besides my misunderstanding of the format of the bakery, the place smells delicious, the wall is lined with breads (I plan on getting a challah bread and a rye bread ASAP), and there were a lot of pastries to choose from.
