I had gotten this with my partner and we had gotten two separate items, I had gotten the Tasker bagel and they had gotten the Market bagel, we had both gotten egg on them, we had gotten there late so they only had the "leftover" bagels which does show to me they either do not bake enough bagels in preparation or did not prepare them if they had them, the bagel was good itself, the Tasker came with salmon and it was Smokey but not noticeable and the egg was way too thick, but not noticeable either, I had dropped about half of the stuff in my bagel before finishing it. The service was amazing and it fast especially for one person, the bagels were put together nicely and tasted as if it was made carefully. The place itself was a very "hole in the wall" kinda place it is definitely a place you have to be aware that it's there, I would love for there to be an area to sit down inside but it's small so it's understandable. Overall they did a very good job with the bagels and the service and I hope they can grow to make it to a larger spot, will definitely be returning. read more

DELICIOUS, chewy bagels!!! I was in line at another bagel shop around the corner, but it was taking too long so someone in line suggested coming to Vanilya and I am so glad they did!! I had no expectations coming here, but these bagels hit the spot!! I am pretty critical when it comes to bagels and I loved how chewy/pillowy the bagels were. They were so satisfying to bite into! Although there weren't many options for spreads, I thought the veggie smear I tried made up for the lack of options! The cream cheese was smooth and the cream cheese to veggie ratio was perfect! Through the recommendation of a colleague, I contacted this place by e-mail during business hours. I got a response in 5-10 minutes- wow!! They didn't have what I was looking for for one of my event participants (gluten free and vegan). However, they were willing to share a recommendation with me. Great Croissants and Chewy Bagels I went on a Sunday morning and ordered via the window outside. There was no sit down dining permitted. They unfortunately didn't have the Chocolate Almond Croissant at the time so I got the regular Chocolate Croissant instead. Friendly service, and I got my order very quickly. Everything was packaged very nicely; individually packaged items and the paper take-out bag has a cute design on it. Chocolate Croissant 5/5 - Nice and flakey. Crispy on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside. The chocolate tasted amazing as well. Bagel Lovers Assortment 3.5/5 - Above average bagels. I personally don't like how chewy the bagels are, it feels almost like a jaw workout just to eat them. The flavoring is good though. I was originally going to review each of the flavors individually since it comes with 12 bagels and there are 6 flavors in total, but unfortunately I didn't get 2 of each flavor so I didn't get to try a whole bagel per flavor. Garden Veggie Cream Cheese 4/5 - Very vibrant flavors from the veggies, and the creaminess and consistency of the cream cheese was really good. Jalapeno Cream Cheese 5/5 - Amazing cream cheese. I'd recommend coming here just for the cream cheese if you have to. The cream cheese is creamy and has a nice texture to it. The jalapenos are well balanced. This cream cheese leaves you with a spicy aftertaste, but oddly enough the cream cheese aspect of it sedates the spiciness so it never becomes overwhelming. I love this cream cheese flavor and I'd definitely pick up some more if I ever visit again. Final Verdict I'd come back here to try out some of the other pastries and the bagel sandwiches, but I don't think I'd order the bagels by themselves again though. Coming here was such a sweet treat recently! We came here on the weekend and tried some rugalech, a pastry with spinach and feta and the bagel special (which was tomato, pesto and mozzarella). The pastry was my favorite of everything we tried. It was flaky and light with a deliciously salty taste from the feta cheese. The bagel was okay, but I wouldn't come here for the bagels, since there are more specialized bagel shops that have better bagels. I'd definitely come again. Truly one of the best bagels in south Philly. They have my favorite bagel assortments and spreads. Decent prices and quality service. Their fig and Brie bagel makes me cry in happiness. Croissants are loved by my toddler. Husband and I always have their iced coffees and somehow it's never too watered down. Often a bit of a line on weekends, but it's usually fast and worth it! Vanilya also does take orders for cakes as well, which I heard is amazing according to friends. They have a few options to choose from: plain, zaatar, poppy seed, sesame seed, and onion. Bagels are delicious - great crust on the outside and chewy center in the middle. Definitely a top tier bagel. They also have a variety of cream cheeses: cucumber dill, veggie, lavender honey, scallion and cinnamon raisin. They don't toast the bagel, but will put a generous amount of cream cheese and cut it in half. The cucumber dill and cinnamon raisin cream cheeses are mellow in flavor. You can barely taste the dill. Every mom wants to make her kid happy. So when my daughter said she wanted emoji cupcakes for her birthday, I agreed, and when she said they had to be specific, I went searching for a talented baker. I was referred here by several friends. The party was Jan 6. I called at the end of November and left a message asking if she could make the cupcakes. I received a return call from Bonnie on December 9- she said she'd been out of town but was back and could do it. She asked me to text her a picture of the cupcakes and I did. See the screenshots attached. We arranged the order and I agreed to the price. December 14 she wrote again and said she'd had a mishap and did I still want the cupcakes? I said yes. Again see the screenshot of our texts. On that day I was in Maui on my honeymoon and we were confirmed. I got back to town after New Year's and today I went to pickup the cupcakes at 2 pm as specified in our texts. The party was at 3 pm. She looked at me with a blank stare and said she had no cupcakes. She claimed I didn't confirm I wanted them. Well, see the texts- I did confirm. She said she didn't send me an invoice - maybe that is true but how is that my problem? So I asked for help. She sent me to a bakery on 13th st. I ran over there in the freezing cold and snow- and it was closed. At 2:25 pm with no cupcakes for 24 kids, I frantically went to ShopRite and Party City to get cupcakes and toppers. I had to face my poor kid at 248 pm without the promised cupcakes. My kid was nice about it. But this was an appalling thing to do to a parent, or anyone else, and is deeply unprofessional. If your order matters to you, avoid this bakery. Vanilya is truly a hidden gem of South Philly, specifically Passayunk area. Despite spending a decent amount of time exploring Passayunk Ave, my first discovery of this place was seeing it featured on a Tik Tok post of a Philly influencer. The video was comparing many highly-rated bagels throughout the city, and these ones were almost at the top of the list. More importantly, this influencer wasn't paid or sponsored to post any of the bagel spots in her video. To my surprise, Vanilya has no TikTok account at all; they have only an Instagram account with a small following. As a an avid enthusiast, I had this place high on my list of bagel shops to try out. After following them on Instagram for a bit, an even more exciting opportunity came about. The owners had started offering hands-on bagel making classes on Tuesdays, one of the days they don't have customer hours. The class enrollment form was easy to fill out and gave a brief overview of the class objectives, time period, and take-home product. The classes take place from 5:30PM to a littler after 8PM, allowing 9-5 workers to fits some baking into their schedules. The class is $80, and you take home a dozen of your own bagels. The $80 cost is actually much more affordable than many other cooking or baking classes in the area. I had signed up with friends, and I couldn't wait to see what this class had to offer. We arrived just around 5:30 on the day of our class. We were welcomed in by Bonnie, the wife of the couple that owns the bakery together. She was incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating. Our class consisted of 9 people, which she mentioned was a bit larger than their usual class size. While 9 people may not sound like a full class, the bakery is relatively narrow. It goes far back to the end of the building, but the width wouldn't be able to allow more than that number of people to be able to view Bonnie demonstrating the steps of the process well. Once we were all settled in, I was glad that everyone got a decent view of Bonnie giving instructions and demonstrating many steps. From start to finish, this class was great. Bonnie covered everything from the science of the flour and dough fermentation to the complexity of the kneading methods to the science of parboiling bagels. Her extensive details and explanation left little questions to be asked from us. Not only did she demonstrate and explain steps exceptionally well, but she also made sure to keep the class hands-on. Everyone participated in the initial mixing process, then proceeded to have their individual work station for their respective bagel dozen. I can't forget to mention that her husband did an incredible job assisting us, answering any additional questions, and offering hands-on help if we needed it. They both facilitated the process very well each doing their part to get to our overall bagel endpoint. Amidst the waiting periods of a few of the baking steps, Bonnie and her husband were very engaging and great to talk to. The small class size also allowed us participants to get to chat and get to know each other. Bonnie also put out several snacks, drinks, and baked goods for us to enjoy while we had waiting time between several steps. Seeing our creations come out of the oven as final product was the ultimate form of gratification. Nothing beats the smell of fresh-baked bread, particularly bagels. Bakeries across the Northeast have their specific steps and secrets to baking, but Bonnie's recipe hit the nail on the head. The bagels combined the very perfect balance that I look for in every new bagel I try: crispy on the outside while staying soft and pillowy on the inside. The density of the bagels was also perfect, giving that perfect bite that everyone desires in a good bagel. Overall, I have not a single bad thing to say about this bakery, class, or the owners. They did an exceptional job teaching this class. Bonnie provided great background and details on the complexity and implications of the steps, yet still kept the class very hands-on with us. It also had a very genuine "in the kitchen" feel. Many classes nowadays feel very commercialized and far-removed from the actual process of then baking/cooking being taught. This class had you take part and produce the results on your own personal dozens of bagels. The only steps done for us were the overnight yeast fermentation and the extended kneading on the professional spiral mixer that is almost impossible to do by hand. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this opportunity; I will definitely be back bringing new guests despite taking it once before. What a great local bakery! I was having a small, family gathering at my house for my two year-old's birthday. We had been back and forth on how big of a party to have, so I found myself still without a cake ordered less than a week from her birthday. Daughter is newly-obsessed with Minnie Mouse so after a few Pinterest searches, I decided a Minnie Mouse cake with just ears and bow details would be perfect. Enter super Bonnie! I called Vanilya on Wednesday, three days before when I needed it and spoke to owner Bonnie. I described to her what I was looking for and she gave me info on cake sizes, flavors, and general pricing. She asked me to send her some photos of what exactly I was looking for and then she would call me back with a more detailed quote. She called me back within an hour or so, we talked more about my vision (there was no exact cake design out there that was what I wanted), and she gave me the pricing and sent me a sketch. I paid in full over the phone and she sent me the receipt/invoice (I thought this was very fair due to the short notice from my end as I have never ordered a custom cake without making at least a deposit.) I went Saturday to pick it up at the agreed upon time. Parking is a little scarce, but not unusual if you live in S. Philly, which I do. The cake was ready, Bonnie gave me instructions on when to chill it, when to take it out for optimal eating state, and how to be careful with the fondant details. I even purchased an apple danish which was the best danish I've ever had (usually in a danish I just want to get to the filling, but the pastry was so delicately flaky and flavorful!) The cake was not only pretty but SO GOOD! We had alternating layers of yellow cake and chocolate cake. The outside was vanilla buttercream and the inside was filled with fresh strawberry buttercream. I will emphasize the "fresh" part was it was a natural pink color and tasted like the actual fruit, with strawberry pieces in it too. The whole cake was light, airy, and delicious! I am so glad I went here, as it had been recommended by a few neighbors. We will definitely be back and thank you for the wonderful and last-minute cake! read more

This was a tough review to write because I was so looking forward to visiting. Since I did arrive late in the evening on a Saturday I added a star, maybe it was bad timing. At this time it didn't seem like there were many dessert items to pick from, so we oddly stood there trying to pick. My daughter picked a chocolate mousse ($6.25) and I did 2 cupcakes ($3.00 each), carrot and vanilla. I would assume the chocolate mousse was great, I didn't try it but didn't hear any complaints; it was definitely decorated beautifully. My cupcakes, I didn't really care for, for a few reasons. I am a cake girl, the cupcake was 1/2 icing and 1/2 cake, I also thought both were a tad dry, but we can blame that on the time of day. I also didn't really get much flavor with the carrot and I didn't understand why it had vanilla icing, sprinkles, and a cherry; normally cream cheese icing accompanies carrot. Maybe that is just my preference. Even with it being vanilla icing, I tasted more Crisco then vanilla; I feel bad, but it's true. The vanilla cake with chocolate icing was fine, again I would have preferred more cake, less icing and again they were decorated beautifully. A few weeks ago, I had an everything bagel from Vanilya. I proclaimed to my family after years of searching high and low throughout all of Philadelphia-- I had finally found the #1 bagel in Philadelphia. Days later, I had to have a couple of procedures at the Hospital... during that time my sister had emailed Vanilya to see if they could send some bagels to my apt. The owner told my sister they don't do deliveries, but for this special case they would. When I arrived back from the Hospital there were a dozen bagels, cream cheese and lox. Hand delivered by the owner herself. I was elated! It truly gave me so much joy and I am so appreciative of the amazing people who work there. The best bagels in the Philadelphia area! I've tried all of their bagels and you really can't go wrong with any, but my favorites are the Everything and the Cheese bagels for sure. Don't forget the cream cheeses! They have other bake goodies too and of course they're all delicious, hand pies, scones, danishes, and the most buttery croissants. Almost forgot about the cookies! My son loves eating cream cheese bagels from Vanilya, which is quite the compliment coming from such a fussy eater. It's also our go to bakery for his birthday cakes. Bonnie was a sweetheart to work with but in the end I was disappointed with my cake . I felt like my cake design was poor as if it was rushed work . I thought the color of my cake was going to be similar to the color of the picture I showed her but it didn't. It was a lighter pink instead of hot pink . There were no gold leaves on my cake like how I asked and the buttercream filling tasted like regular vanilla instead of caramel. The top part supposed to have more chocolate but instead it was more opened . I wasn't going to top my whole cake with flowers . Overall , the cake was okay. I was hoping it was going to be as good as how others has mentioned in their review . Price wise wasn't worth what I paid . I could of went elsewhere for a nicer and better tasting cake. Had to buy my own flowers decoration because she was going to charge me double the price. Who wouldn't want to save a few bucks? Vanilya is a new bakery on East Passyunk near the fountain that gets a big two thumbs up from me. They're closed most of the week to the public, and specialize in personalized cakes and baked goods for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. But they're open a couple days a week and have a case-full of tempting delicious desserts! Options range from strawberry shortcake to chocolate mouse to petite cakes... and the huge and inexpensive cookies! The owner here is named Bonnie and she's certainly a doll.
