My older son started when he was eight years old. Six years later, he is still going strong and loving karate classes! Instructional staff at Karate Fit are excellent. The Sensei and Leadership Team members really want every child to succeed in class. While classes have a focus on conditioning, line drills, and katas, staff reinforce skills thru relay games, obstacle courses, and mini-competitions. This allows kids to be focused throughout the class and get excited about transition to new activities. Staff usually end classes with mini-competitions of who can kick the highest, for example; it is really great witnessing the students cheering each other on to reach a little higher on their kicks. While the instructors and classes are awesome, real highlights each quarter are board breaking sessions and the belt testing itself. Students can buy boards to break during the session and the Sensei work with students one-on-one to develop, practice, and execute the routine (e.g., axe kick, palm strike, hammer hand) to break the boards. This is a great opportunity to put into practice what the students had learned and to experience success; kids always leave these sessions, whether they broke their first single board with a stomp kick or broke two three-board stacks with a double-hammer hand, with huge smiles on their faces. Likewise, I never felt the belt tests were a pass/fail activity but a learning experience and an opportunity to continue improving and advancing in the belt ranks. My experience at Karate Fit USA LLC has been a great one and challenging. I've been a member for about five months and my grandson has been a member for almost two years. It's an excellent place for children to learn the value of Martial Arts. As a senior member, I didn't think I would be able to keep up with the younger folks, but I recently have been proven wrong. I've been promoted to a yellow belt and I broke four boards. Incredible! I was hesitant when I first began, but Sensei Swingle's encouragement helps me to follow through and to keep moving forward. Sensei Swingle and his staff are extremely great at what they do. Each Sensei have their own style of teaching which is a plus for you because it helps you to develop skills that are fit for you. You will learn how to kick, when to strike and there are exercises for fitness included in the training as well. The leaders are very gentle, careful, respectful but will teach you how to be powerful in times when it is necessary to do so. You are encouraged to take your time while learning the moves. As a senior I've learned surprisingly, that your body can do more than you think it can. The facility is kept clean and the students are helpful, friendly and are fun to work with. Let's start with the name, Karate Fit USA. The dictionary definition of Karate is an empty-handed self defense technique and Fit means well fitness. All in all, as the name suggests, this place teaches you self defense while keeping you fit. Mark Swingle is an amazing Sensei. He is very understanding, flexible, hard working and motivating. My kid has been going here for the past two years during one of the toughest times due to the pandemic. Mark has done his best to make sure kids have some workout be it on zoom during the peak of pandemic or outdoors in the park, socially distanced once the rules were relaxed. He did all this in a very flexible manner. My kid is very disciplined, focused and stronger with his training. Mark also has lot of additional material on the private facebook page and also archived classes from before. These videos provide additional means to stay in touch and be fit. Good for kids, and good for adults also! The kata taught are Japanese, but Kyusho, Small Circle Jujitsu, Japanese and Filipino weapons are also practiced. 50:50 balance of hands and kicks allows different types of students to find plenty that works for them, while also challenging themselves to work on any weaknesses. All taught in a low-stress, family-friendly way, so that even the casual student can enjoy. (Those "casual students" are often the ones who really get into it down the road!) Martial Arts to me is a big deal and I wanted a school that would take that would take the art seriously and act upon making oneself a better and stronger martial artist. I found that Karate Fit USA, being with them for 9 years now, takes this seriously and has very talented teachers to teach people. A great school for all ages! Separate classes by age and rank, but also some carefully combined practice for new partners, etc. The instructors help students challenge themselves and grow, regardless of initial ability. Students can attend as many of their group's classes as possible, and there is even video help to practice at home.
