I would go there if I am craving Malaysian food. It has an extensive menu with the traditional items like roti canai, pad thai, many curry options and skewers. I have been there twice and really like the quick service and convenient location with a waterfront view in Steveston. Would like to try the drinks next visit and maybe the fresh coconut water. We ordered the deep fried wonton and chicken green curry. The Hainan rice wasn't the best but the curry was more spicy than I thought. Overall we still enjoyed our meal. read more

Located in the quieter part of Steveston's commercial area facing the water. From the outside, it looks small but there are tables inside and in the patio. It was a beautiful summer day so we opted to eat outside in their patio area. Loved their roti canai and curry sauce but the star of our meal was definitely the fish with mangoes. We all enjoyed the dish and finished it all. Refreshing and light perfect for summer. Fried rice was yummy, not too oily. Beef curry was ok, i found it a wee bit bland and too watery. Enjoyed a quick lunch at Kari House on a beautiful summer day! My friend and I ate in the patio and got the perfect mix of shade and hot sun! 1 star because the staff did not inform about extra charges for condiments. The food I have tried so far was average and definitely not very authentic Malaysian food. If you are Malaysian or have been to Malaysia, you would know the taste is off. There are much better Malaysian restaurants around, but not in Steveston. I was intrigued with kuay chap on the menu and decided to try it. I know it is not the same as what you will get in Singapore despite the same name. This is likely penang style as the staff told me she only knows penang dishes and does not know KL dishes. That is strange to me as I would think most Malaysian would kinda know KL (the capital) food? I have not come across this when I visited penang so I am not sure either. It is tasty and the broth reminded me of bak Kut teh. I asked if they have chili to go with it. It is very common in Malaysia to always serve chili with their noodle or rice dish. I was asked if I wanted hot sauce or cut chili. I requested for cut chili. I was not told it would be an additional cost. I was also not given the bill when I was at the counter making payment. The staff just verbally told me the amount. It was only later that I thought the amount did not seem right and I went back to ask about it. That was when I was told the cut chili cost $2+tax. If I knew there was a cost, I could have requested for sambal instead, another version of chili. I felt it was quite unethical of the staff not to inform customers of any extra charges. I thought the food was pretty good but I'm not a fair judge since I've rarely had Malay food . Really good deal with the lunch menu. I order a roti canai and Kari lemak with fish and it came up to only be ~$15. The roti came with curry sauce but I find the roti a little greasy. The lunch portion is just right with a bit of salad, rice and main to make this a complete meal - very satisfying. The lemak curry is not too spicy for my liking. No wow factor but I'm not opposed to coming back. They also have outdoor seating which is a plus for a nice sunny day like today! read more

We are long time customers of Kari House, and have always enjoyed their food and location. For me Malaysian food is comfort food, because of it's similarity to Indonesian food. By way of explanation, my family is Dutch-Indonesian, so many of the dishes at Kari House are comfort foods for me. We went for lunch yesterday, ordering the gado gado and satay ayam, and for dessert the mango sticky rice and pisang goreng. We enjoyed the dishes we ordered, but were taken aback when the gado gado arrived tossed in sweet and sour sauce, not the traditional peanut sauce. We never were asked and we never indicated that we had allergies. It tasted okay, but not what we were expecting nor would we have ordered it if we knew that it no longer came in peanut sauce. Malaysian restaurant tucked away behind the nearby Blenz on Bayview. Parking is plentiful on the streets after 1700 or so. As of the time of writing, there is a 20% takeout discount thanks to the virus scare. The tomyam char mee (stir fried egg noodles) with pork was pretty tasty. Decent sized portion as well. The menu listed this item as 2 peppers (spicy) but I thought it was somewhat mild. Everything seemed quite fresh as well. There are lunch specials available here for a few bucks less. We started ordering pick up from this restaurant at the beginning of lockdown in early 2020. It became a weekly ritual, although later we began alternating with another restaurant. We continue to do so, but have cut back to once a month because it - like many restaurants have become so expensive. The food is wonderful, we are always excited when Kari House night rolls around. Favourites include mixed vegetables with peanut sauce, char kuay teow, tamarind pad thai, cashew chicken, and coconut rice. The various curry dishes are also perpetual favourites. I was craving for Malaysian food and was debating between going to my usual spot John 3:16 or trying this restaurant for the first time. Unwise decision! We ordered quite a lot of dishes: * Roti Canai - was ok but I found the roti much thicker and dough-ier. * chicken stay - OMG, have you ever had BONES in your satay? We encountered two small bones and I even took a picture of one of them to prove my point. What would have been the risk of this when we weren't expecting bones? Crack your teeth or choke on them? * Thai red curry - the beef was soooo hard and chewy. I couldn't swallow most of them and had to spit them out. * Tom yum curry - this one tasted like the Thai red curry. Basically, our two curries tasted the same and we had no idea which was what if not for the meat differentiation. * Boneless chicken appetizer - this wasn't tender enough and was quite hard. Also, we were surprised at how small the portion was for the price. * tofu - probably the more "decent" one out of all the dishes. It was basically 2 pieces of fried tofu with peanut sauce. You can call me a picky eater but my tongue has been spoiled by John 3:16 and Ipoh. I would have given Kari House a 1-star if they didn't have the 20% discount. I've been meaning to try this place due to some recommendations. So, the day has finally come. There seems to be a reasonable amount of items on the lunch menu but it looks to me just different variations of the same things. The service is good and they're quite friendly. I had the Nyonya Ayam, which is deep fried boneless chicken with rice and soup, topped with Nyonya lemon sauce. I substituted the white rice for Hainanese rice for an extra $1 (server failed to inform me there's a charge but I expected it). The Hainanese rice is tasteless so don't bother with it. The deep fried chicken is drenched in this thai sweet chili sauce. Otherwise, it's flavourless. The salad is ok, it comes with some sweet dressing. The soup is not bad. I didn't notice this Malaysian place in Steveston area before. It's a bit hidden in the corner and no obvious signs when I walked by. I normally stroll around Steveston for food before the movies and this is where we went. We tried their satay, laksa and roti canai. My usual go-to's at a Malay place. The laksa was good portion size but didn't give me the wow factor. The roti and the satay on the other hand I could do more of. The skewers were tender and the satay sauce was delicious. The roti was nice and warm and flakely when you tear it apart. The curry dip is a bit runny but it was all good if you do sunk it a bit longer. Just an option for Malay food if you're in the Steveston area but nothing I'd go out my way for. They do have other lunch specials on the menu that we'd like to try but our stomachs couldn't fit it all. read more

I haven't been back in awhile, say 2.5 years, at least, but I always remember places that serve me good hearty food, and this was one of them. Back before my Yelp writing days, I somehow stumbled along to this place with two friends, and had some curries, and a good time. Not knowing if they were still around, as they have a real nice spot overlooking the water, I came with my significant other, not thinking of eating here, but walking along, and ending up here, I looked at the menu, and enticed her, due to the fact we have not eaten breakfast, and knowing she would tempt any place with the item of "Laksa" to go on and eat the item! Off we were, into this place, and it's a good size, two sides of the restaurant with seating. One side could host bigger parties, and we were sat on the side facing the water. Tacky wallpaper showing a real picture of water, beach and palm trees aside, it's comfortable. I've had their curries before, and this was just a mission for the bowl of Laksa, and so we ordered, there were two varities, and the one picked was the Singaporean. While we waited for our food, my significant other was scared of the microwave beep we heard, and I had to enforce the stir fried food flying noise that was heard in the background and that our food was not being 'nuked'. When our bowl came out, steam was rising from this bowl, so you knew it was hot, or they put this in the microwave long!!!! (doubt that!) Looking at the dish, you could see the creamy coconut soup, the red globs of spice that was mixed into this soup to form the perfect blend of soupy goodness. There was a string of green beans (first I've ever seen) on this dish. A few big squares of tofu, some fish cake, two nice pieces of shrimp half peeled, some bean sprout, and two kinds of noodles. One was the vermicelli, and the other was this thicker yellow colored noodle (think Shanghai thick noodle, but not that thick.....) The bowl was quite big, and for our two small stomachs, this hit the spot. The soup had a good kick of sweating spice, not overly spicy but just enough where you keep on shoving it down your throat. The blend of all the ingredients worked, and was very hearty. It wasn't a cheap bowl, coming out to $9.40 (I may be off a few cents), but if your looking in Richmond for a bowl of Laksa, you know it is not easy to find, and if you are in Steveston Village looking for this type of food, just come here. I look forward to coming again, as I said before when I first came, they didn't let me down then, and they didn't let me down this time either. I always enjoy my meals at the Kari House. Came with some co-workers for a Friday lunch. Most of us ordered the lunch menu items ranging from Eggplant to roasted pork belly, red curry, green curry and more. We came early before noon to beat the lunch rush and get a good parking spot. For me, I ordered the green curry lunch special which was just the right amount of food for me. The dish came with green curry, rice and salad. A bowl of nice ginger vegetable soup helped to whet the appetite and warm us up from the cold winter. I think we were all satisfied with the exception of our fellow Singaporean. He's kind of a critique when it comes to Malay and Singapore dishes. For the rest of us, the food was just fine. Fellow Elite Hubert Y was with us too. I wonder what he will write.... I'm giving it 3.5 stars overall. 4 for good service 3.5 -4 for the food depends on what you like. I noticed most people at our table didn't eat the onions. Which I wanted to eat. I love onions. Lunch specials you can get for $10 with tax and tip or less. That's a decent deal. Over the past ten years that I've been coming here. The roti canai was soft, fluffy, moist and came with not over-oily sauce. The skewers were extremely flavourful in marination and charcoal aromatics, boosted further by the peanut sauce. A beautiful sunny weekend caused my wife and I to wander around Steveston yesterday. Just couldn't help ourselves. It was around 6pm when we realized the hunger monster was surfacing. We went into Kari House in order to enjoy something different. We had an order of the chicken skewers (I agree with the last poster in that they were juicy and tasty). i was disappinted that there were no cucumbers and onions presented with the satay, which is normally the case. It may be that my allergy to nuts (requested no peanut sauce) might have thrown them off. My wife had a laksa (I probably killed the spelling on that) which she said was excellent. I chose a noodle dish that ended up being dry and tastless. I wasn't that impressed at all. Maybe our honeymoon trip many years ago to Malaysia eating the local food right from the street vendors makes my expectations too high. I have to say that Malaysian food is usually tasty and varied. This noodle dish was neither. It was just plain and boring. The quality of the food, the presentation, and lack of traditional satay vegetables left me with a negative feeling that I hope I've effectively passed along. If you are looking for authentic and consistantly superb Singaporean or Malaysian food, maybe give Orchid Delight a try instead (it is worth the trip over the bridge into Vancouver). I've not yet reviewed them since they moved the restaurant further away from me, but they are good... very good. read more

How do you rate a place that is a hit or a complete miss depending on what you order? Seasoned reviewers, throw me a bone here! The quality of the dishes at Kari varied so wildly that I'm at a loss as to whether or not I'll go back. As mentioned by previous reviews, their roti canai was definitely a hit, being crispy on the outside but flaky and buttery on the inside...a perfect vehicle for sopping up curry sauce. Their laksa was also acceptable, which from me is a heady endorsement (a year of living/travelling in SE Asia has turned me into a laksa Nazi). The broth was rich and flavourful (though a bit on the mild/bland side), and they certainly didn't skimp on the toppings as there was tons of prawns, vegetables, eggs, etc. Beyond these two dishes however, the rest of the dishes ranged from nothing special to just bad. The pad thai was particularly disappointing as it lacked that sweet/sour tang that you would normally get from the lime juice, fish sauce, chillis, etc. It was so bland that it tasted like the noodles had been stir fried with watered down ketchup. Being in a big group, we were able to order a pretty big assortment and no one came away raving about the place. I would consider going back if I was in the neighbourhood and didn't know where else to go, but would certainly not go out of my way there for a meal. read more

Really a 3.5 star based on my lunch today, but good service, and great lunch special make it a 4. I had the cashew stir fry with prawns, it was nice spicy flavour and had half a dozen good size prawns and lots of cashews. As a lunch special for $8.95, came with a heaping pile of well cooked rice, some lettuce, and a broth/soup. I also ordered the roti canai. Roti canai was very flaky (maybe a bit too flaky?), and the accompanying sauce had a delicious flavour, although it was watery, very oily and not very warm (temperature, not spice). Washed down with a Tiger (note they have beer specials every day and Thursday is Tiger day but didn't feel like Corona). Place is right on the water with a small patio. Is it authentic Malaysian? I've been to Malaysian restaurants in Singapore, Malaysia and all over North America and they are all a bit different. Yes, this place has a bunch of "other" stuff on the menu and I didn't see a lot of Malay classic dishes you might otherwise see. The nasi lemak was not particularly satisfying nor was it authentic. The rice was a little too wet, and you can definitely get better nasi lemak in Vancouver. The passembur we ordered turned out better than I had expected so that was a pleasant surprise. If you go to Steveston, you need to stop at the Kari House for some Roti Canai. The menu is quite large, and I haven't explored it very much (I'm not good with spicy food), but everything I have eaten here has been delicious. The roti canai is a flaky bread with a curry dipping sauce that I just can't get enough of, and their hot and sour soup is the perfect pick-me-up on a cold day in Richmond. I also enjoy the doughy texture of their chives cake, which comes with a spicy dipping sauce (go easy on this stuff if you're not a fan of spice, I learned the hard way!!). The service is always warm and friendly, and if you don't mind the cheesy piano renderings of famous pop music that is ALWAYS playing in the background, you're sure to enjoy yourself. read more

The lunch combos are very reasonable at $8-10 each including broth and salad. My husband is a celiac and he is able to have any of the curries. My favorite restaurant in Steveston, you can't beat authentic Malaysian/ Singaporean cuisine while sitting on the waterfront and the price just can't be beat in that area. The authentic Malaysian style curry with Okra is amazing and you just can't go here without ordering the Chicken Satay skewers, four big skewers of marinated chicken flame grilled and served with peanut sauce for only $8.There is lots of flavor in every dish. I recommend the curry dishes with either prawns or sole, you have to order rice on the side too. Also the Mango Sole is pretty amazing.. The Chicken or prawn laksa (coconut milk/curry soup) is huge and packed with goodies and very tasty. Wine is excellently priced and they don't serve the cheapest stuff as a house wine like most places do, for example Jackson triggs Cab Merlot is the house red for only $5. It's a family run business with sometimes little kids helping out and i'm proud to support them. Based on some of the negative reviews I saw on yelp, the customers were inexperienced at ordering and got the wrong dishes (IMHO) or didn't know that you have to order rice on the side for an extra $1.. As a side note: the menu is a bit difficult to read and to understand especially if you are a first timer so ask your server for help. read more

I was excited when I found out about this place in the Review's "Best of Richmond." I used to travel to Penang every few years with my parents as I have family there, and my favourite thing was the food. So I go online to check out their menu and think to myself, "Hm, this is a tad pricey." But I figure if it's good and they have decent sized portions, it'll be alright. Well, I ordered my 2 favourite dishes, Char kway teow and Mee goreng, each costing about $11. Indeed their portions are larger than most, each dish could probably feed 2 people with relatively small appetites. The Char kway teow was extremely bland. It was just flat rice noodles lightly fried with soy sauce and a barely noticeable amount of chilli. But at least it somewhat resembled authentic Char kway teow, which is more than I can say for the Mee goreng. I honestly can't figure out whether they got my order wrong with the Mee goreng, it was that bad. It's supposed to be thin noodles fried with sweet soy sauce, but what I got was this weird, flat noodles in a soupy sauce. It tasted of disgusting spices that I did not recognize. Had I not payed $11 for this I would have thrown it out. The only positive thing I can say about Kari House is that if you ask for prawns, you actually get a fair amount of decent sized prawns, not a couple of tiny shrimp. But that's obviously not enough for me to recommend or go back to this place. read more

HONESTLY TERRIBLE. Kari serves a variety of DEEP FRIED lunch menu choices. HUH? I went in here expecting to get Hainanese Chicken. When I asked, the server shrugged, smiled and offer me their DEEP FRIED ALTERNATIVE. I'm not sure what the other reviewers were raving about, but this is not an authentic Malaysian restaurant at all. A good indication is that half of their dishes say " Thai" as the prefix :( . If it doesn't say Thai, it says deep fried. A lunch special item is a deep fried quarter chicken with salad. OMG The sunny, warm summer afternoon I arrived, I asked if they had any shaved iced drinks - Cendol anyone? The server looked at me and asked me if I wanted a Mai Tai. :( I ordered the Mee Goreng for lack of anything else. It arrived and was a horrible MSG laden mess.. It was likely a canned sauce. The beef was preserved and rubbery. This was ANYTHING BUT Malaysian. Two ladies were running the place and with one nearly full time rearing two children tearing through the restaurant the whole time. Positively AWFUL.
