Seated really quickly at an empty table for 4 which was great for husband and I. Didn't enjoy the roti (A2) which was kind of loaded down with oil but enjoyed the curry beef brisket (R5) immensely. Great service. It's kind of just the vibe where it feels really hot inside and flies are buzzing but the food was tasty. Would do takeout next time and eat it across the way at the mall picnic tables.

    R1 hainanese boneless chicken

The hainanese chicken rice is a great pick. When I visited Singapore, it was hard to find a boneless version, so I appreaciated that this one is not only boneless but still juicy and tender. The sauces are not as flavorful, but I like the portion of the meal. I like how they give out the soup as well. The servers are welcoming and reminded me to put garlic oil for the dish, which added a nice crunch overall. The only thing missing is the ginger scallion oil sauce which will elevate this to the next level. They also gave free dessert at the end which is a pleasant surprise. I'd have to try and visit for the other dishes as well.

    R1. Boneless Hainanese Chicken On Rice 无 骨 海 南 鸡 饭 -$17.50

Great service! Waitress was super friendly and attentive the moment we stepped in. I got the Boneless Hainanese chicken on rice ($17.50) There were these crushed peanuts/garlic on the chicken that really elevated the dish. The crunchiness paired balanced the soft boneless chicken very well - great garnish! They also served complimentary dessert (Bubur Cha cha) at the end of our meal and it wasn't too sweet. There was a fair amount of taro in there too so I was pleasantly surprised!

Craving for South Eas Asian food while in Vancouver and found this restaurant. They have 2 locations, Burnaby and Coquitlam. Tried the one in Burnaby. Located at the street corner next to Hot Pot restaurant. Parking is on the back side. Typical Singaporean menu with some specials. Ordered the rendang rice set. Not too bad but the flavor missing some kicks. The lean beef is tender, same with potato nicely cooked. Just the flavor is not there. Good thing I ordered Sambal Egg. The sambal is very addicting. Saw they even the sambal in a bottle. Service is quite fast. Sit down to review the menu. Ordered at Cashier. Friendly worker. They gave out complimentary pandan pudding at the end of the meal and it's yummy. Modern ambiance with Singapore Lion mural on the wall.

Great service and some pretty good Singapore food choices. Everything tasted very good, not too spicy but very good rich flavours. Very busy around dinner time as takeout is very popular. Chicken in Pandan leaf was juicy and tender, the Hainan Chicken was a bit overdone, but the rice was very good.

The food here is so delicious! Super easy to order at the front counter & you pay first before you get your food. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. I really recommend getting the laksa, it's soo goood!

Hawker style where you get a table and then go up front to order. They'll call your number and you'll pick it up yourself. There is a plate return station on the side. Prices are really good! Around ~$15 per dish. Rendang beef - super aromatic. Not spicy at all and they didnt ask for spice level so not sure if you can tailor it. Lots of brisket pieces. This is such a good price compared to other places that serve rendang beef. Mee goreng - full of flavor. Chicken pieces not dry. Satay beef hor fun - not fresh hor fun so it's thicker and not springy. The soup is so thick! Almost like a bowl of satay sauce. It was good in the beginning but got too rich and hard to finish. I would not order this again.

Quick casual. Seat yourself and order in the front. Fast and efficient. Place was packed on a Friday around noon. Menu was wide and had more dishes than I can possibly try. All the food was delicious. Hainanese chicken - super tender dark meat. Only problem was portion could be bigger! Beef rendang - tasty and the yellow rice and side dish was a nice touch. Chicken and beef skewers - highlight and must have, especially the chicken! Satay beef noodle - average.

So glad that I found Singaporean restaurant in Coquitlam. I ordered the food to go & the service was pretty fast. - Mee goreng: delicious! The noodle was chewy & stringy. The dish was very flavorful - had a good balance of sweet & savory and a bit of spiciness. Good chunks of fillings (shrimp, beef, tofu & veggie). - Hainanese chicken rice: it was good. I could taste the savory coconut in the rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly & tender. The ginger sauce was good but I wish they gave a little bit more. - Char kway tau: the kway tau had a char taste and delicious! It wasn't spicy so my kid could enjoy it. It was a very flavorful dish. Overall, the food tasted authentic and tasty! I will definitely come back to try different items.

Malaysian parent approved. Whenever I'm visiting home (Port Moody), this is one of my go-tos. Singaporean and Malaysian food is what i consider comfort food, and they really do a good job of that. My top pick here is probably their hainan chicken rice is really good - definitely has some fat to it (delicious) but not overwhelmingly greasy and the broth is packed with chicken flavour. I don't actually know how the chicken meat is still so tender after they make the broth from it. But can't go wrong with beef rendang or any sambal veggie dish either. I do wish the plate of roti canai came with more roti, as well as the satay; but all in all the value is still there.

We came to get a quick snack after dinner on a Saturday. We got the roti canai and the chicke skewers. The chicken skewers were not dry and was well flavoured. I liked the peanut sauce that came with it. The roti canai was still crispy when we got home. The curry sauce that came with it was flavourful. The roti canai had lots of layers and was flaky & buttery. I would definitely get this again if I was in the area

This gem has been trending on social medias for some time now I'd say ~ If you are in the Coquitlam area (Coquitlam Centre) , you must come and check them out :) - though keep it mind it is quite busy ! But the staff make your waiting experience smooth - check out the menu while you wait , as the pictures alone can get your mouth watering ! Skewers were grilled to perfection and just the right amount of flavors - meat was easy to remove from the stick , you wont be having a battle and wondering if your meat will suddenly fly across the room ! The Laksa was so great - the creamy coconut + spice is a must - and the portions was definitely fair for the price - filled with broth, noodles and the extras ! The chicken was soooo soft and juicy - just melts away in your mouth - the rice was a tad dry - but not dry enough to take a star - So! I will definitely be back for more - not sure what to try next , as it all looks heavenly !

Finally got to try Singapore Hawker. They offer a wide range of dishes and is quite popular so be sure to go early or leave your name inside before you wait outside. If you're dining in, you pay at front first and then they call your number for pick up cafeteria style. HK Milk Tea - $5 - sort of standard and a little overpriced. Roti canai - $4.95 - decent but could be crispier and more of a flavourful dipping sauce. Mee Goreng - $12.95 - great flavor and texture. Singapore laksa - $12.95 - good, rich broth with an assortment of goodies like fish balls and fish tofu. Beef curry rice - $12.95 - one of my favourites. Very tender beef brisket with a great curry sauce. Nasi goreng - $12.95 - one of my favourites. Packs a punch with the sambal.

However, I was a bit disappointed but not too much as prices were decent depending on what you get. We got the chicken laksa, Nasi goreng, Mongolian chicken, and kuih lapis. Chicken laksa is the ideal order as the soup is decent and the pricing is fair. It is not the best as the soup didn't carry much flavor and the noodles were a bit on the softer side. It was filling however. Nasi goreng is solid. The vegetables felt frozen reheated and wilted, but at least the cucumbers were fresh. The amount of shrimp, squid, and fish cakes was dismal. Flavor profile is good. The Mongolian chicken is okay. It's not fried as the batter is quite soft. It is saucy which my friends were craving. I enjoyed the flavor profile of this one though. The dessert is good. Kuih Lapis is a colorful dessert so it appealed to me in both taste and presentation. One red flag I noticed is that I heard beep after beep of microwave sounds. It's as if all the dishes they prepared well in advance and just reheat for us, plus they walled off the kitchen and the back completely, giving the impression that they want to hide something. Most renowned places won't hide the back like that, as you can at least take a peek of what's cooking behind the scenes in most places. Service is good as they refill complimentary tea throughout our dining experience. Pay at the front for the bill.

VERDICT/VALUE With a menu from across a variety of Asian cultures, Tropical Island tries to everything to everyone and at least for this one takeout experience, it does - falling short only on portion size. === 2. FOOD Our order was takeout and so the portion sizes were small (see photos for scale of the smaller tin pans with chopsticks); however, the quality of the food was decent overall! Chicken Satay ($13) Four skewers come at this price with some sort of mild-ish spicy oil-based peanut sauce on the side. The chicken is relatively meaty and tender! Beef Vegetable Delight ($19) With lotus root, carrots, onions, celery, and broccoli on tap with thin slices of beef, this is a dish you'll enjoy with rice or another starch. Green Beans ($19) One of the recommended house dishes by the server; it was decent - no minced pork like that found in Chinese restaurants, but it does have red and green peppers and onions. === 3. SERVICE The server at the counter was good and professional, balancing myself, app-order delivery drivers, and dine-in guests. The staff here seemed to speak English and Manadarin. The food was prepared fairly quickly, tho this may be due to having only 4 tables of dine-in guests at the time of order. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's not a looker - it starts with narrow hallway with two small bench-type seats for those waiting at the counter, before opening into an older seating area. Wheelchairs and baby strollers should fit well enough once you get through the hallway. Parking is interesting - a few spots are located out front (watch out for one with a small Do Not Park sign on the wall) and there are a few more spots across the alleyway.

In addition to South Surrey, they have 4 other locations the greater Vancouver area (Robson, Broadway & Oak, Kitsilano, and Davie). Up until this point, I had never tried Malaysian Cuisine, was always curious, but it just never happened. On a side note, I remember the first time I tried Thai food, back in Nashville when I was in my mid 30s. Odd that it took me that long and even odder considering I grew up in Brooklyn and New York City, the melting pot of the country. I didn't really have a concept of the distinction between different types of Asian food, my only point of reference was Chinese food. I remember being blown away upon that first time trying Thai food (and hooked ever since) and the experience was quite the same with my experience with Malaysian cuisine. We meant to order two appetizers but through a miscommunication, actually ordered three, oops! It was a good problem to have. Between the appetizers and the main dishes, while each course was a generous serving, nothing was heavy or made me feel bloated in any way. At the same time, the flavors just seemed to burst, with very distinct and pleasing tastes while combined with beautifully decorative touches that were aesthetically appetizing! The Eggplant Fries were really interesting. Personally, I find eggplant can be challenging to work, to get flavored just right and get cooked enough so it's not rough to eat but not cooked so much that it becomes mushy. Maybe it's just me but I do struggle with that at times. I found the fries to be a perfect balance between firm enough to warrant being called "fries" with just the right amount of chew, not too mushy. The Spring Roll Lettuce Wraps were beautiful, creative and imaginative. You place the spring roll inside the lettuce along with the vibrant red cabbage, fold the lettuce and dip into the sauce *chef's kiss* Both the Tofu Goreng appetizer and Tumeric Coconut Spinach were bursting with flavor. The Pineapple Fried Rice also had an amazing depth of flavor along with the beautiful presentation inside the pineapple. Last, but definitely not least .. I've never had anything like their Mango Margarita. As clear to see in the picture, it's filled with fresh ripe whole mango pieces which really helped elevate this drink to the next stratosphere lol. If this is what I can expect when eating Malaysian Cuisine, count me in for a repeat performance!
