Tried this place for dinner. Cozy small restaurant, comfortable and clean enough. Its a casual place and service was as you'd expect. Friendly and quick. We tried: Nasi Lemak rendang lamb - one of my fav dishes at malaysian places. The coconut rice was excellent. Came with the usual fried sardines and peanuts - no surprises here. The sambal was not spicy at all which was disappointing. The rendang lamb was sadly dry. The sauce was not bad but not spiced enough. The meat was just too dry. 3/5. Assam Laksa - pretty rare to find this dish at Malaysian places in town. Sadly this one is disappointing. I suspect they dont sell much of this. They use canned sardines and canned pineapple. The broth didnt have any depth of flavour and lacked the deep umami and funk I expected from a good bowl of this. This is at best, a rough approximation of this dish. There are better versions in town, but truthfully I have yet to find one anywhere near the quality I had in Malaysia. 2/5. Char Kway Teow - excellent. Beautiful char and "wok hei" and noodles maintained a great texture. They do use regular chinese ho-fun that is abundant around here rather than the wider versions, for those who care. I wish they gave more fish cake slices though. Only 2-3 in the entire dish but lots of lap cheong and shrimp. One of the better versions of this dish Ive had in town. 4.5/5. Sambal Kang Kong - also excellent. Nice cook on the veg and char flavour. Also comes out in a sizzling iron pot which im sure helps. I just wish they added more fermented shrimp paste and more chilis. 4.5/5. Satay - beef and chicken. Not bad. Had a bit of char from the grill and meat was cooked nicely. I wish they were smokier. peanut sauce was good. 4/5. Dessert - taro pandan layer cake - pretty good. nice texture, strong on the pandan and coconut but could not taste the taro. 3.5/5. Its in a little strip mall with only a few parking spots but there is free street parking around. Overall, they seem to excel at dishes using a wok. Love this place! Wondering where have I been the last dozens of visits to Vancouver? The owners were busy but took time to chat with us. Super nice family owned business originally from Ipoh, Malaysia known for good food. Ambiance is quaint with lots of pictures and references to Malaysia. We had amazing food and below are a few highlights. We look forward to be back for sure! Kam heong clams- so delicious and a must-order!Reminds me of the real taste of Malaysian food. The heat from the spice, curry leaves and work hey was the best I've had in Washington and BC. Taro ring- so crispy and satiating. The taro is very flavorful and a great combination with the squid, shrimp and other savory goodies in the middle of the taro ring. Asam laksa- Penang style chewy noodle soup in super savory and umami fish broth with tamarind, pineapple and shrimp paste. Such a beautiful balance of slightly spicy, sour, and sweet broth. Was here to celebrate a birthday and they have the most special noodle dish for this occasion. However, we splurged and ordered a crab and it was disappointing. Kam Heong Crab didn't have much meat in it. The dish was doused in sauce and the taste of crab didn't surface at all. In Marpole a little corner restaurant tucked away between a convenience store and a cafe is this gorgeous little gem. It was a lovely spring afternoon and the cool breeze made my nose cold and I really appreciated warming up to a steaming tea which I was greeted with while I waited. I love Rendang and roti so that's what I ordered. Rendang has such warm savoury flavours. It was more than I expected. The lamb was tender and the roti wasn't greasy at all. I would say the Rendang was better than the curry sauce for the roti. I dipped it in there sopping up the juices. It was also more than I could finish so had to take it in a to-go container. One of the best Malaysian restaurant in Vancouver and a gem loved by the neighbours, Ipoh has been serving up delicious food for a long time. The restaurant is always busy (i.e. popular) and there is always a line up so plan your arrival accordingly. We waited about 20 minutes last time we were there. Once we got our table and ordered, the food arrived very quickly. We ordered the Pork Chop served on a deep fried Taro Ring. The taro ring was crunchy on the outside but soft and creamy on the inside. We also have the Kari Beef Brisket which had the best curry flavour. Delicious gem in the neighborhood serving up some mad (traditional) Malaysian cuisine. This place gets quite busy into the dinner hours even on a weeknight. Of all the dishes we ordered my favorite was definitely the Char Kway Teo. The dish was veryyyy flavorful (a tad salty, but acceptable), had a nice portion of meats including lap cheong and fish cake slices, all tossed with a nice and thin flat noodle. Sad to say, there was barely any eggplant or okra in this dish. We wouldn't order this dish again as it was quite a disappointment. We ordered a lot tonight and most of it was underwhelming. Lets start with what was better which included their flavourful nasi goreng, hard to find fried prawn rolls and satay (beef, pork and chicken) which were all tender and flavourful. The mango chicken was also a hit tonight because it had a tangy and sweet topping made with cucumbers, onions and mangoes on top of crispy chicken thigh. The not so good started with the curry platter that had chewy beef and lamb in a spicy but thin sauce. The ipoh chow fun was also not good as it was a large portion but almost flavourless and the hainanese chicken was again, flavourless other than soy and the rice was dry and not very tasty. The fried pork belly was okay but a small portion and a bit over fried while the roti was very buttery but they had forgotten the curry sauce. Family style Malaysian restaurant with interesting decor inside. We arrived around 1:30pm and got seated right away as it wasn't busy. I initially wanted to order the Ipoh Chow Fun, server told me they ran out of hor fun (thick rice noodles). I then chose mee goreng which is made with egg noodles, and the server said they're actually not out of hor fun, they just can't do any stir fried dishes since it was too hot in the kitchen... with half the noodle options being stir fried, I was a bit disappointed. I opted out for the laksa. Nasi lemak tasted great, everything on the plate worked well together. Curry laksa was a bit underwhelming, it wasn't as flavourful as I wanted it to be. I'm not sure why only 3.5 stars - this was probably the most pleasantly surprising meal we had in Vancouver. And I came with a native Malaysian friend who agreed this is probably the best Malaysian food we've had in North America. We made reservations and were promptly seated. He needs to join me next time as I clearly missed the mark today. Beef Rendang $17.95 It's a rich coconut sauce with cubes of Beef. For the amount of Beef, and amount. It's very reasonably priced. I'm not a fan of this version of the spices and the beef could've used a bit longer in the pressure cooker. Char Keuh Teow $13.95 Flat noodles with meat, prawns, dried sausage "lap Cheong" with sprouts, onions. There is a level of wok hay in this stir fry. The chef "chow" this very nicely. I enjoyed this dish. As for the service, the lady was super nice and the boss was very busy. I can see how some have an issue with service especially when they can get busy. Decent food + service without a smile. If you plan on splitting bills, you have to let them know when you order. That's fine to inform us its too late when we asked at the end of the meal; but no eye contact, staring at machine with a grumpy face while telling us about this makes it super unpleasant and leaves a bad taste. Otherwise, we had their Rendang Beef for lunch for $14.95+tip which comes with rice and side of crispy salty baby fish and cucumbers. Similar taste and pricing as other places. Careful not to mix in the red paste until you've tasted the spiciness level of the dish or it can get too spicy as the curry itself is already a bit spicy. The restaurant was crowded on a weekday night so it was quite a wait to get our food. The food was okay but the service could have been better. The prawn mee was soaking lots of broth and I was asking for an extra order of just the broth. I didnt mind paying extra, however, the lady refused and said no extra broth for the order. The clay pot kang kong of stir fried water spinach with shallots, garlic, and dried shrimp in sambal paste has a spicy flavor to it, for those who like spice. I really enjoyed the coconut rice bowl and hainanese rice bowl. Of the two, the hainanese has more flavor for my taste buds. The major highlight dish would have to be the deluxe curry platter which was separated from left to right in my photos, beef/lamb/chicken. The beef has a strong spice taste, and the tea didn't help with spice LOL. To help soothe and calm the spice, the Malaysian milk tea was very refreshing and cold. So yummy! Of the 3 meats on the deluxe curry platter, the lamb was the best. Not really spicy the lamb was soft and firm and surely a delight to eat. I tried the food before and I did not think it was that fantastic. It was in the average scale for me. My recent visit changed my mind, so i guessed it depended on what you ordered. We had the Hainanese chicken rice, claypot mi tai mak (thick short rice noodle) and chendol. These were good. The chicken was not too bad and I loved the fried shallots (so home style) on it. The rice was the proper chicken rice rice found in Singapore, none of those bright yellow rice. Plus it came with the correct sauces - chili, ginger and dark soy sauce. The claypot mi tai mak was delicious, half the time I was wondering if there was lard in it which would be so awesome. This was stirfry similar to KL Hokkien Mee with the dark caramel sauce. The highlight would be the chendol which had real gula melaka, real as in it was not brown sugar passed off as gula melaka. This would be my go to place now whenever I have cravings for Malaysian/Singaporean food. read more

We were craving Malaysian food for so long and this restaurant is recommended by a Malaysian friend from Seattle. This is our second meal after crossing the boarder so we came here not hungry, we just ordered 2 dishes to share. We ordered Clay Pot Sambal Kang Kong and Nasi Lemak Penang Lamb. Both are delicious! The lamb is so tender and the coconut rice tastes really good. The Sambal Kang Kong may be on a salty side for some people, just to set your expectations, but we are totally fine with it, the sauce is so good to be eaten with the rice! We traveled to Malaysia in 2019 and haven't had good Malay food ever since. We will definitely come back whenever we are in Vancouver! read more

Tasty Malaysian place. Looks like they've expanded from their Rupert location. Parking is available in the tiny lot in front, as well as on the side streets. Inside looks a bit dated. The building is old though. Staff were friendly. Dishes were quite tasty. Special mention goes to their roti though. This place really gets it right. Beef rendang is done well. Curry is quite flavourful as well. BBQ duck was crisp but suprisingly not greasy. We probably tried some 10 dishes, and everything hit the spot. Pricing is somewhat reasonable too. I am surprised that Penang Delight Cafe has a second location. Friend said lets go to Penang Delight Cafe and at first I thought he had issues with directions. Apparently, there is a second location. Oh wow. I thought he was going to drive all the way to Rupert from Richmond. Well we were lucky and came at the right time. We got a table quickly. Didn't have to wait long. this place is always busy. We ordered the Roti Canai, Pandan Chicken Wings, Dozen of beef skewers and Clay Pot Sambal Kang Kong. First off, the Roti Canai was lacking a bit of flavor. It had the authentic looks to it. It would be nice if the roti canai had a little more flavor. It was nice and fluffy. The dish came with two pieces. Each piece was cut in half and served with curry sauce (that is not spicy but was good). Second dish was the Pandan Chicken Wings. The wings were super hot. Well of course, its freshly made that is why its hot. It had a unique flavor. Not sure if I was supposed to eat the pandan leaf. I didn't bother eating the leaf because it seems too difficult to chew through. Anyhow, the chicken wing was good and flavorful. Dozen beef skewers - I liked that dish. The skewers were the right size. I loved their peanut sauce. I had to ask them to bring two extra dishes of sauce. Wow good sauce. Too bad they didn't have lamb that night. I like lamb skewers. Lastly, we got the Clay Pot Sambal Kang Kong. Wow this dish was ultra flavorful. But beware, it will give you bad breath (for at least 2 days). The next day, I had some tough luck bumping into 2 friends whom I haven't seen in ages and now they probably think I have bad breath. The Clay Pot Sambal Kang Kong was very good. Portion is somewhat small. Parking is ok. There are plenty of parking on the street. I would not bother trying to park in their parking lot. Its too crazy there. Also the parking lot is shared with other stores and restaurants. Restaurant decor is nice and clean. I am guessing the previous restaurant before Penang Delight must have been a Japanese restaurant. Here are some of my favourite dishes here: Cantonese Stir Fry Noodles - for those we is not a fan of spicy food, this is a good alternative. A combo of rice noodles and vermicelli fried with a mixture of thinly sliced pork and asst seafood and choy sum and sauce. Roti Canai - good curry sauce and I really like the texture of the pancake. It is always a favourite of the guests I bring to this restaurant Fried Kang Kong - must have veggie dish. Cooked with belacan, a type of fermented dried shrimp paste which is the 'sauce' in Malaysian cooking. Gado Gado - Popular in Indonesia but well received in Malaysia and Singapore as well. Chopped boiled potatoes with deep fried tofu and bean sprouts atop with peanut sauce. Assam Laksa - this is an acquired taste and some people might find it to be quite different as it has tamarind, fish and it is spicy Cendol - the dark sweetener you see in Malaysian dessert is Gula Melaka, a type of palm sugar. It has a very low glycemic index compares to processed white sugar. This dessert is a type of shaved ice with adzuki beans, corn, little green strips which is made out of mung bean, condensed milk, coconut milk and gula melaka. Must try! read more

Given our very limited selection of Malaysian restaurants in town, this is not bad. Decor is warm with lots of wood. The walls are fully decorated with Malaysian posters and maps. An odd Cuban artifact popped out of nowhere but it blended in just fine. But boy, check out my photo of the breaker switch panel. Gorgeous! We had a large so we tried a variety of flavours. For appt, we went for satay, curry puff, roti, and deep fried pork. The pork was especially tasty and a nostalgic flavour. For entrée, we went for the steam fish with signature sauce. The sauce was indeed quite appetizing. Lots of meat on the fish which was served as a whole fish. Presentation on a silver plate with burner is nice. We also had twp bowls of laksa which were very nice with lots of bone in chicken and fish cakes. The soup was spicy but still flavourful. The only slip up iour waiter forgot the Malaysian coffee and when we reminded him 15 minutes later, he didn't apologize and said it's coming. We finally got it later. All in all, a good dining experience and I will recommend it. But I'll add that it will not have the same rich flavour found in Kuala Lumpur, but then we can say the same with many ethnic cuisine. Many are either missing spices and herbs not available in Canada or they're took the fusion route. read more

I discovered that this can cater to vegans, so I tried them out for lunch one day. I got the vegetable laksa ($11.95 plus tax), which can easily be made vegan by only having rice noodles instead of a mix of rice and egg noodles. My laksa came out in under 5 minutes--now that's fast. Very generous portion thin rice noodles, with broccoli, shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, plenty of tofu puffs, and garnished with some iceberg lettuce (which seemed a bit pointless). The broth was lovely--just rich enough without being too heavy, and adequately spicy without being too dependent on chili oil. For the price, I was very full and satisfied. In hindsight, I'm thinking that my perception of the food here is somewhat hindered by my experience at Aree Thai. My favourite Malaysian restaurant in Vancouver. I fell in love with the Malay cuisine when I went to Malaysia and this place reminded me of my trip. They seemed to be following the Covid protocols: took down our contact info upon arrival & distanced seatings. I felt safe dining here. I really enjoyed Char Kway Teow, a flat rice noodle dish with shrimp, fish cake, and Chinese sausage. I love the charred flavor that comes from a wok and this place does it really well. Probably the best Char Kway Teow I've had in town!! Would highly recommend ordering this dish. We also ordered deluxe curry trio that came with chicken curry, lamb curry and beef curry. All were very flavorful and delicious. The Hainanese chicken was super juicy and moist. Would definitely order it again! The reason I only gave 4 stars is because one of us was allergic to seafood and when we informed the server of the allergy, she didn't seem to be familiar with food allergies. We asked to take out shrimp but weren't offered to replace it with meat, or any other protein options. Overall we enjoyed every dish we ordered and would definitely come back! read more
