I decided to kill some time since I was a little early for my barber appointment... 30 min early, actually. This store was only a few stores down from where I get my hair cut. I also had some questions for some lawn care tips. I walk in and am greeted right away, but that's where the customer service stopped. I walked around aimlessly in Hope's that someone would ask me if I needed help. Not one person said anything to me. 4 employees had past me multiple times in the 20 minutes I was in the store. 3 other customers that walked in the store were immediately asked what they needed. Huh... great customer service there! You could have made the arguement that I could have just asked someone that i needed help, but when I'm walking around the store for 20 minutes stopping to look at products every once in a while... you would think someone would ask if I needed help, but no. I was actually going to purchase a few things had someone helped me. Their prices aren't too bad for a mom and pop hardware store, but the lack of customer service is enough to kill it for me. Karsten-Denson is the best. They have what you need for home / DIY projects, and they're close in to town. They also have lots of interesting products from smaller, mostly USA-based, manufacturers and tool makers. They don't carry lumber or many building materials. I don't normally leave reviews, but reading the reviews here, while looking for the weekend hours, got me motivated. The one star review below which states: "You could have made the arguement* that I could have just asked someone that i needed help, but..." more or less addresses the issue. I could, and do, make that argument. You can't be an aimless introvert and be offended that no one greeted you a second or third time. Also, to the sentimental two-starrer below, c'mon. Great people, very knowledgeable. I needed a bunch of keys made and they did them quickly and accurately.

The last of the local hardware store. These folks are very knowledgeable and will go the extra mile to help you with what they have. They do have lots of stronger stuff then what the big box store sell as well as unique stuff that you wont be able to find anywhere else. Totally an old school hardware store. Yeah, they are a little more expensive than a Lowes or Home Depot, but it is fun to support local businesses. Even if you don't need anything, pop your head in and look around at all their fun stuff. Lots of cool camping gear and you can even get that flea stuff you put on your dogs you typically get at the vet. Awesome seed selection, too. read more

This used to be a store that was in business forever almost downtown. When it was downtown, it truly was a relic of the past. Old plate glass windows and a big, heavy door with plate glass in it for the entrance, an old gas heater that made it warm the moment you walked in, and room after room of assorted hardware. That was then, this is now. They moved to Ingleside village. I've used them once since they've moved, partly because it's not as close as the downtown location and now it's a ghost of its former self. Some may love the location but if you can't climb steps, I recommend you find another way to get into this place or another store. Their service before could be spotty. I recall asking for Kentucky Blue Grass seed. I was rudely told by the woman why they didn't have it and wouldn't order it for me. All in all, she was having a pretty bad hangover day or so it appeared. The employees that worked there--downtown--were fairly friendly, it was this beast of a woman who checked you out that was the problem. Then they moved. I ordered a part from them once. This was an item that they used to stock all the time but sales must have fallen and he had to order it. That happens. The economy was in the middle of the Great Depression II and everyone was downsizing or going out of business. The price was decent and he was able to get the part but there was no advantage of "If I need a part now, I can just go over there and they'll have it. I won't have to order it online and wait." But, even if it's the same or nearly the same price, having a part delivered to your mailbox is advantageous over the same time period where you have to call them to see if it's in and then make a special trip over, loose time and spend the extra for gas. However, I can understand. A business these days can't afford to stock items that may sit on the shelf for months. What killed me on this place was when I drove by one day to see an employee out front taking a break. She was puffing away at a cigarette which in its self isn't a crime. But to do so right in front of the tomato plants that were for sale means yellowing from the bottom up of those plants and a total waste of money. read more

I remember going to Karsten-Denson when I worked in downtown Macon many years ago. This is before Lowes, Home Depot and Ace were options. I grew up in the Ingleside Neighborhood where K & D is now located and have shopped there a few times. The other day I had a challenging situation with replacing a missing cover on bottom of an old dressing table stool. Took stool into store and Tyrone immediately took me to area to locate new selection changing all 4 covers to match. Tyrone did the replacing and then showed me boxes of Caladium bulbs that had just come in. Yes, and big bulbs in multi color selections That is the kind of shopping I like - personal service and K & D is lucky to have Tyrone. KB read more
