Thanks Aili for my amazing hair! I love it more than I love cats and Mac n cheese combined, which is saying something.
    Alyssa D.

All I can say is that Aili made me love my hair the most I have ever loved it in my life. She's so dang talented. (I'm assuming every person that works there is cos everyone leaves gorgeous) but she's knowledgeable, explained why she was doing what she was doing and gave me advice on how to upkeep it, trying to minimize the maintenance. Goodness. A very homey feeling salon, with great, talented people? Yes, please.

I've been lucky enough to have Kari work on my hair twice in the past year. She helped me celebrate the finish of my military career by giving me amazing, against-Army-regulation purple hues, which helped boost my confidence as I began to navigate my civilian career. I trusted Kari enough to ask her to do my hair for my wedding and she did not disappoint. She worked with my very fine, stick straight hair until it held a curl and designed a hair style that would accommodate the barrette that my best friend had worn in hair on the day of her own wedding. My hair was truly one of my favorite things from my wedding day. Thanks, Kari, for making me feel gorgeous!

I've been a client of Tina (Tee Tee) Spears for over 15 years and can honestly say she is amazingly talented. Her approach to color is a perfect blend of art and science. Her hair designs are technical, vibrant and one of a kind. It is nothing short of magic. Tina can create exactly what you want, the latest trends and things yet to be imagined. If you're not looking for as much creativity and just want great color, she's great for that too. Healthy, consistent and vibrant - this will be your hair in Tina's hands. Karu is the perfect atmosphere for all of this magic and transformation - luxury, class and comfort all wrapped up in a great central location with easy parking! Make this a special treat and it will quickly become your new fav.

I love this place! First of all, the energy is phenomenal; you can feel it as soon as you walk in the front door. The studio is full of stylists who are not only magnificently talented, but also warm, friendly, creative, and passionately in love with their work. And I couldn't be happier with my hair cut by Taylor! It can be hard to find someone who knows how to handle coarse, curly hair like mine, but Taylor gave my locks the TLC they so desperately needed. She stayed true to the length that I wanted and added some pretty face-framing layers in the front. And I don't know what kind of magic she is, but my hair came out way shinier, bouncier, healthier, softer, and happier than it ever has been. Like brand new baby curls. :) Not to mention the heavenly head massage. So, so good. And, as if that wasn't enough, Kari did my color, which turned out more glorious than I could have even imagined, and now I am an enchanted creature. Check out the photos below. What talented ladies! I'm blown away. :) From start to finish it was a lovely experience, and my hair looks gorgeous. Now even strangers stop me to tell me how much they love my hair. Thank you, Taylor! Thank you, Kari! Thank you, KaRu! Huge, huge fan.

Amazing cut by Taylor. Beautiful color by Kari.

I had THE BEST haircut with Taylor last week. I have never been so pleased with a haircut in my life! And I am very picky about my hair. Taylor put in some soft layers that work perfectly with the shape of my face. You can tell she really knows what she is doing, and she was really accommodating towards my requests and feedback, too. I will certainly be back for another haircut with Taylor! Look how great my hair looks! Color by the very talented Kari, also at KaRu.

    First hair coloring session ever!

First off - I'm just super happy already that they have online booking!! Who calls to make a hair appointment in the middle of the day in an open office environment? Awkward. Second - I recently moved to Austin and it has been a roller coaster ride to find "the" hair salon, the nail place, everything over again! I'm happy to say that I don't need to look any further for my permanent hair salon here. :) I booked an ombré with Toni Bish who is super passionate and knowledgable about her work. She helped me narrow down from a bunch of saved hairstyle pins on Pinterest and what would look good with my skin tone. She automatically made me feel super comfortable and while I usually keep quiet during haircuts, we kept up a steady stream of convo going. Also, I'm pretty much blind without my glasses and it's hard to trust hairstylists without seeing anything until the final product. Toni understood this and kept up the excited tone throughout the entire appt. I am so hooked after my first color and I will definitely go back soon!

First I would like to say that this place is absolutely beautiful inside, the complimentary water and coffee is a very nice touch to make your clients feel comfortable and welcome. Now down to the nitty gritty... I had seen via Instagram that they were looking for hair models so I sent in a few pictures of my current hair was asked to come in to have my hair colored and be a "model". I thought this whole time I would be modeling for the salon and that would mean having pictures taken of my hair to show their work. That's not really what they are referring to. Models,in this case from what I was told,is essentially being the guinea pig so hairstylists can try new things on your hair. Which I completely understand and I think it's a great way for artists to continue their education in the beauty field, but no one explained to me what exactly I was there for until my stylist starting putting color on my hair. First off,I was handed off through Kari to Nicole, who would be doing my hair. Immediately I was skeptical of Nicole because, and this is just me personally, but if you are a hairstylist and you have no social media accounts or pictures of your work so you can show your new clients that's immediately a red flag. I like to see my hair stylists work,9 times out of 10 that's what's going to draw in new clients for you. But Nicole was really sweet, kind, and made me comfortable. Nicole and I had talked for a week or so about exactly what we both wanted to do. In the photos I've attached you can see what she sent me via email stating that's what she wanted to do to my hair. Looks beautiful right? I thought so too! So going in and sitting down we went over again what exactly we were going to do,I made it clear I did not want a style with a lot of upkeep so I didn't want anything right on my roots because honestly I don't have the money to keep coming back for touch ups. Nicole said she understood but when she started foiling, she put the product right at my root,I started feeling uneasy in my head but I told myself to trust her because she was so sweet and seemed so knowledgeable. Plus I thought maybe she was doing like a color similar to my natural and was just going to blend it in. Long story short,as you can see from the photos it came out nothing like the photo she sent me. I'm still pretty confused on how "don't put anything on my roots" or "I want a natural blonde look" translated to getting this result but now I feel really mislead and I'm very unhappy with my hair. It looks nothing like what I was told. I'm not meaning to bash Nicole in anyway way. She is truly one of the most kind hairstylists I've ever worked with but don't send your clients photos like this then give them something completely different and cheap looking because now I'm facing having to pay 200 dollars to have it fixed. Nicole has been in contact with me to make things right but I wouldn't be lying if I said I had some trust issues with going back to KaRu Salon to have it fixed.

IF YOU HAVE CURLS - THIS PLACE CAN MAKE THEM AWESOME! DIONNE might be new to the salon, but she clearly has loads of curly hair experience. It was also my first time visiting the salon in general and she made the visit great (so did Ai (sp?), the receptionist, who got me a fork so I could eat my lunch while in the chair). Anyway, I have wavy-curly hair. Some of it is even straight. I lovingly call it "the lion's mane." As in it is seemingly untameable. For a few of years I have experimented with different hairstyles, mainly ones that involved straight hair. All of the styles I tried were great for long straight hair, but required me actually straightening all of my hair to actually show the style off. Recently, a little over a year or so, I have desired a move towards my more naturally curly hair. This has been difficult. Most stylist want to keep all of the layers long and want to cut it while it's wet and not styled in curls - thus, triangle head. :/ Curly haired girls, you know exactly what this dreaded cut looks like and none of us like it. Not Dionne! She gets it! She did an initial cut when I came in to give the general shape needed for my type of curls and what I asked for - please don't cut it too short, I so like length. Then, after washing my hair and letting it curl into it's natural state, she trimmed it a little further for extra detail. I am in love! I already have another appointment for August to get a trim before I go on a long over due vacation.

Amazing experiences! It was my first time getting my hair professionally bleached and it came out amazing. It felt so healthy. Best ombré I've ever had. I believe my stylist name was Lori. She was great.

My entire life I have skimped on haircuts, because I never thought they were that important. But after tons of bleach, fried and split ends, and a terrible $10 haircut from a year ago, I decided to splurge a little for a professional. Best decision ever! Aili was fantastic. I told her all my hair problems and she was able to address them. Plus, the shampoo scalp massage felt sooooo good. The salon itself is beautiful with very interesting ceilings. I will definitely be coming back again.

I'm beyond happy with the result I got at Karu Salon last week! I went in for a balayage and Kari did a great job adjusting my expectations with going from brunette to blond as well as set up a plan for how I could achieve my desired end result. The color turned out beautiful and even though I still want to get it even lighter, I'm more than able to enjoy this middle step much more than I thought I would going into the treatment. I've received a ton of compliments already and I feel very renewed. I can't wait to go back to complete my process with Kari!

She then showed her grumpy attitudes and saying, "you have too much hair". For this 7 hour long tiring process (yes, it's true), my hairs now become: * severely bleached and damaged. They are completely dry and will take 6 months of restoration. * now pain in hair roots. * haircut was very amateurish; she needs more experience. * I feel terrible because of all these. There are other good hair stylists in the shop. However, before Jerica was let serving customers, the owner of the shop should have Jerica under supervision of other experienced stylists which is unfortunately missing. I was very upset for a whole evening. But, I give my reviews to this hair salon regarding my experience.

The first time I went to Salon Vela and got a haircut from Jessica, I loved it. Months later, 3…read moremonths postpartum, I wanted to chop my hair into a simple bob -- nothing complicated, just a short, clean cut with thin face frames. My hair was falling out, always tied back, and giving me headaches. I desperately wanted something easy to manage so I could feel human again. To make it worse, it was my birthday weekend, and I wanted to treat myself to a haircut that would help me feel better. When I called I specifically asked for Jessica, but I couldn't make the times she was available. The salon gave me a list of other stylists. They quoted me $65 and told me Kendall, a "level 1 stylist," could take me. I checked their website -- Jessica was also listed as "level 1," so I figured no problem. At no point did anyone tell me Kendall was still learning, still a student, or not ready to do a bob haircut. If they had, I would have waited or gone elsewhere. The haircut with Kendall took nearly 3 hours. She split my hair into a million tiny sections, moved painfully slow, and kept stopping to fuss with my hair. She was gentle after I told her I had a sensitive scalp, which I appreciated, but the actual cut? A disaster. I rushed out to get home to my baby, but once I looked closely at home, I realized my hair was an uneven, jagged mess. So yes -- I had to spend my birthday weekend with a botched haircut that made me feel worse than before. I'm not confrontational, but I messaged Kendall on Instagram. To her credit, she admitted the cut was uneven. I gave her a second chance -- against my better judgment -- because I thought maybe with guidance she could fix it. She told me her boss would help her. That gave me some reassurance. When I went back, she apologized and sat me down. I asked about her boss. She went and got him -- he came out from the back (where he was eating lunch), looked at my hair, pointed out everything she did wrong, and gave her instructions on how to fix it. He reassured me that they had "practiced over the weekend" and she'd be able to do it. Then he left after 5 minutes. So there I was again, sitting in Kendall's chair. For the next 2.5 hours she brushed my hair nervously over and over, looking like a deer in headlights, hoping it would somehow fix itself. Meanwhile, I watched the boss and another stylist take multiple clients each -- they both did two full clients, started on third -- while I was still stuck there with Kendall struggling and making no real progress. By that point, I was crying in the chair. Imagine: 3 months postpartum, hair falling out, hoping for a haircut to make you feel better -- and instead sitting there for hours while the stylist is clearly clueless and the boss, who admitted she messed up, refuses to fix it. When I finally asked him to step in and please just fix my hair, he brushed me off. His exact words were "Nobody has time for you. You'll have to come back again. I can't fix it for you today." Let that sink in: I came back specifically because Kendall messed up the first time. I gave them a chance to make it right. Instead of fixing it himself -- which would have taken him 20 minutes -- he chose to take her other client and leave me sitting there in tears getting experimented on. If he was going to take any client, it should have been me. That is basic accountability. I told him I couldn't keep coming back -- it's a 35-minute drive each way, plus another 3 hours sitting in that chair. I said I didn't want to come in a third time. His response? A shrug and: "We'll just refund you. I don't know what you want me to do. My niece has been waiting for me. Nobody can fix your hair today." That's it. After nearly 6 hours wasted across two visits, tears in the chair, and a botched haircut, his solution was to brush me off and refund me.
