A while ago during the regatta, we stopped by Karubees tent. Yesterday after an appointment downtown, I stopped by the restaurant for lunch. I had the chicken curry, white rice and collard greens---when I tell you this was one of the top five things I've ever eaten, I am not joking! The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender and flavorful, the collard greens were, in my opinion, the BEST I have ever had in my life, and the rice was the perfect connection between the two! The staff was so incredibly kind, and the restaurant itself was very cute! But back to the food--it was brought out so fast! The size of the portions was intimidating, but let me tell you I wanted to scrape every grain of curry and collard green soaked rice off the plate!! I only got one picture of the dish because once that smell was inhaled, I absolutely started salivating! Clean restaurant, polite and helpful staff, excellent food. My wife and I split a combination plate of curry chicken, jerk chicken, a side of sweet plantains and white rice. The heat level on the chicken dishes was perfect. By the end, the spice had built up, but for the most part is was just a low level pleasant burn and loads of flavor. The white rice was perfectly cooked which is kind of silly to comment on, but I've had problems there before. The plantains were a little over cooked and mushy but the flavor was a nice accompaniment to the whole dish. If I had a quibble it would be that $20+ for all the entrees is pretty steep, but it was happily offset by a huge portion. If I'm ever back in the area, I would definitely stop by again. As one final note, there is a lovely little part right next door. It seemed to be a popular spot for the local homeless population. We used the park anyway and it was fine. The park was clean and nice and not a single person bothered us. I felt a little guilty eating a meal in front of them like that, but that is on me and not them. read more

My wife and visited Charleston on a weekend vacation, and this was one of the restaurants we really wanted to try. I've never had authentic Jamaican food, and it had been a while for my wife, so we were very excited. The lady at the register (I think one of the owners?) was very kind and helpful in answering the questions we had. We ended up ordering the meal of jerk chicken, oxtail, and goat (it was originally curry chicken, but they were out). A group of ladies recommended the bread, and so we ordered some of that as well. The food came out probably fifteen to twenty minutes later, which was a reasonable wait time. Everything looked and smelled delicious. The bread was hot, fresh, and super tasty. Absolutely loved it. Very fluffy. I enjoyed the oxtail, though I was more enamored with the sauce it was covered in. Dipping the bread in the oxtail sauce was amazing. The goat wasn't my favorite. It was filled with bone, and the pieces of meat I did get were rather fatty. The jerk chicken, was very good, though. Definitely my favorite of the three meats. It was cooked well and had the slow burn I had anticipated and longed for. Very delicious. Our meal also came with two sides, and we chose the fried plantains and the rice and peas (red kidney beans). I'm not huge on fried plantains generally, though my wife loves them, but these were pretty good. And the rice and peas had some killer flavor. I couldn't stop eating it. The meal was a little pricey. It was $30 for the meats and sides, and an extra $3 for the bread. My wife and I finished the meal and were both full without leftovers. It wasn't massively overpriced, but I would have anticipated our meal to be more in the $20-$25 range. Regardless, we had good service and overall delicious food, so I would certainly suggest Karubees. read more

Now, I've had the plenty of amazing Jamaican food from Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and other states I have travelled to, but this right here has it's own signature twist of flavor that is banging. I ordered the beef patty and coco bread, curry chicken with rice and peas, plantains and greens. The curry chicken fell off the bone and the curry was delicious, the rice had a slight coconut taste to it, the plantains were candy, the greens didn't need hot sauce, and the coco bread was nice and toasty with that tasty patty snuggled in between. This location is not about ambiance it's about a party in your mouth. They do have seating, and parking might be a little tricky since you're downtown, but you can park right in front. Hands down the best curried goat I have ever had. Which includes in several islands in the Caribbean, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Huntington and San Diego that is can remember. The goat was very tender and not full of bones. Extremely flavorful gravy (great heat level-hot pepper) without being overly salty.the Goat (curried goat or stew) comes with two sides. We picked the beans with rice and the collard greens. Both are vegetarian sides. The beans and is bursting with favor from the coconut oil with firm tasty beans. The collards were good, cook well and the lease favor full item on the plate. But this bodes well rest of items my plate as a calming affect. P.S. make sure you have white rice under the goat with extra gravy. My daughter had the beef patties great for lunch or a snack. Crispy plain good,I like mine spicer (hot pepper). My wife graduated with her master's degree fro WVSU on Saturday. I wanted to take her someplace different but I needed to eat local and relatively quick. This place was awesome! I had the jerked chicken and jerked shrimp, rice and peas and cabbage. My wife was afraid the jerk seasoning would've too spicy so she got the chicken curry. We ended up sharing our food and it was ALL fantastic. Just enough heat to remind me of Kingston. I was a little confused when I pulled into the parking lot. There was two businesses in the building and I didn't see the entrance for Karubees. A directional sign on the parking lot side (back) of the building, would be helpful. I nearly left but called the restaurant to ask if I was in the right place. I am sooooo glad I called. FYI..... the entrance is on the side along Grosscup Avenue. It was good, I got oxtails with double cabbage. The was huge slices like I've never seen before and it had a kick to it. The oxtails had a little bit of a sweet taste to them but they were really good, I only wish it was more in the plate, it came with only 4 oxtails which was very disappointing because they were good plus I paid over $16 but I may go back in the future. This is was our 1st time here and we will definitely be back! We went the first day Karubees opened in the new location and loved it!! We tried the jerk chicken (if you love spicy), curry chicken, curried goat. The curried goat was out of this world. The oxtail is also highly recommended. Sides - you can't go wrong with rice and beans. The staff is friendly and energetic. The atmosphere makes you feel like you discovered a secret spot, that only locals will know to find. Lastly I loved the authenticity of the food. All their spices are imported!
