Found this place online while exploring Portland and I'm so glad we decided to try it! Kasbah is a family-owned Moroccan cafe. The whole place has a really cozy, traditional Moroccan feel, with colorful decor and little details that make it feel like you've stepped somewhere completely different for a bit. You choose your seat and can place your order online or at the front, so it's pretty casual and relaxed. We ordered the Moroccan mint iced tea, which was absolutely refreshing! We also ordered the Makouda, which I had never tried before. They're Moroccan fried potato patties that are crispy on the outside and soft and seasoned on the inside. They came with a spicy tomato sauce on the side, which was really good, although definitely had some heat! We also got olives with it. And we had to try the Chicken Tagine! It came with tender, flavorful chicken, potatoes, and olives in a deliciously seasoned sauce. The flavors were warm and savory, and the chicken was really tender. One thing to know is that the food does take a while to come out. It was surprisingly slow, especially since this is a casual cafe, but honestly...once the food arrived, I understood why. Everything tasted freshly prepared and full of flavor, so I'd say it was definitely worth the wait. Overall, I really enjoyed finding this little Moroccan spot in Portland. My cousin used to live in Portland and highly recommended Kasbah, so I knew I had to check it out when I was visiting the area. My husband and I ordered the merguez (lamb sausage) tagine and a shakshouka. Even before tasting the food, the smell of it was so mouthwatering. This was my first time ever having Moroccan food and I was very impressed--both of these dishes were so well flavored and amazing! While both dishes were great, my favorite was definitely the merguez tagine and I'd highly recommend ordering it. The ambiance here is so colorful and cozy with Moroccan music playing in the background. The service here is also friendly but it is not full service as you get your own utensils and water. read more

Tastiest Moroccan food I've tried anywhere so far. It's a small little cafe, def not the best for large groups and looks like it's usually just 1 guy working the whole shop so you can order thru QR code or at the counter and get your own waters. We shared the lamb sausage (merguez) tagine which was amazing and so big the 2 of us shared 1 and still took home leftovers. It's a platter of lamb sausages in a tomatoey stew over your choice of couscous or rice w/ a couple sunny eggs & olives. They also had sandwiches which I would like to go back to try. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the mint tea - it was much too sweet like drinking liquid spearmint gum. OMG, we stopped by this place after a long day visiting the Saturday Market and walking around town. It was getting late and we needed a place to eat. First, we were hesitant to go in because the place was empty. Second, we were a little unsure about Moroccan food. Little did we know how great this place was. The food was made fresh to order and it was very tasty. We ordered the dip duo, beet salad, garbanzo bean and kefta. Everything was so delicious, especially the beet salad. The food was prepared to order, hence the little wait. The waitress suggested we get the food as it was ready and it was a very good suggestion. We had so much food, and it gave us an opportunity to bring home leftovers (something I'm not a fan of). It made for a great lunch the next day. We had the roasted eggplant appetizer combined with a roasted red pepper/tomato appetizer and Moroccan bread. Wow! Smokey and delicious. Main dish was 7 vegetable and chickpea stew over couscous. Kasbah is such an excellent dining experience that it feels like a trip to Morocco without leaving Portland. The interior is decorated with a traditional colorful design inspired by Moroccan roots and creates a cozy and authentic atmosphere. The food is hearty and has simple yet very delicious flavors. Tried the Moroccan Beet salad and a 7-vegetable tagine and both were so good! They offer quite a few meat options as well. The dishes also had a generous portion size. We had lunch here today, and it was a mixed bag. My friends' food looked great, but my merguez sausage and couscous was a bit disappointing. The tomato marmalade wasn't. It tasted more like plain canned tomatoes. The merguez was good though. It tasted like pretty lean ground lamb. There was nearly no service and our food took forever to come. The food for the whole table came out in pieces so it took some time for the whole table to get their food. The atmosphere was super casual and pretty cute. I came here with a friend about 8 years ago. When I lived in Portland, I came here frequently and now that I live elsewhere, I try to make my way here when I'm in town. First time visitor. I was blown away at how authentic the tea was. I used to live in Morocco and one thing I miss the most is how the tea is made there. This place transported me back to my time living abroad. The Kefta sandwich is amazing and so was the split pea soup. The Merguez lamb sausage is spicy and if you're not used to that then order something else. It seems to be mainly the chef making things in the back and a server. It's a beautiful little cafe with lots of decorations that make you feel like you're in a street cafe in Casablanca. Kasbah lives up to its reputation. Deeply satisfying, hearty, nourishing, and delicious. I had the stuffed batbot sandwich with the yellow lentil soup and an iced mint tea as a reviewer a month ago recommended this. The sandwich had such fresh ingredients and was simultaneously light with the fresh cucumber and lettuce and tomatoes and hearty with the meat patty and fried egg. The real star for me was the lentil soup which was a rich umami soup. I'm coming back for more of that soup! The sweet mint iced tea was refreshing on a warm day. This tiny spot is a must visit! The decor looks to be collected items from the owner, and I enjoyed the music. We picked our own seat and ordered at the counter. Overall Thoughts: The 5 star reviews don't lie; this spot is seriously incredible. The stuffed batbot sandwich was among the best sandwiches I've ever had and the iced Moroccan mint tea was a fantastic pairing. This is a spot that makes me upset that I don't live in/closer to Portland. It's counter service, and the staff/owner are super friendly and the food comes out quickly. The prices are very reasonable given the quality and portions. There isn't a ton of seating inside, but it was pretty much empty when I went in for lunch on a Thursday. The interior is decorated nicely and patriotically, with beautiful tiles and flags adorning the walls. Food I tried: - Stuffed Batbot Sandwich with Yellow Split Pea Soup (5/5): This is no doubt among the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. The bread is wonderful, springey and spongey. The kefta patty is delicious-- juicy with robust flavors and without even a tinge of dryness. I loved the warm, lightly runny egg and cheese paired with the cold, crispy veggies. The soup was also hearty and creamy with delicious hints of smokey paprika. You can really taste the olive oil layer on top which added a rich, earthy flavor to it. Although I visited Kasbah about a month ago (my apologies for such a late posting), I still think about the food. Needless to say, Kasbah served some of the best food I've had in a long time. My friends and I were visiting Portland for just the weekend, and I'm so glad that we stopped by here. We were hungry at 6 pm on a Saturday, and although we were the only ones in the restaurant for a while, a few other parties did show up. Don't be fooled, this place should be full to the brim with a line out the door!! I tried the split pea soup, and halved the lamb tangine and seafood tangine with a friend. Everything tasted phenomenal. Seasoned perfectly, large portion sizes (I eat a lot and was so hungry that day but had enough for breakfast the next morning). Everything was very fresh and just so good. It's the ultimate comfort food. Also got to try the mint tea which was great as well. The owner runs almost a one man show. He's at the front of the house, he's in the kitchen, he's talking to customers. Tip this man well!! If I were a Portland native, I would frequent this place so much. Kasbah needs a Gordon Ramsey or Keith Lee to make it go viral to match how good the food is. Seriously, go try the food!! read more

The food and service at Kasbah Moroccan Cafe is five stars, A+! We ordered a few different entrees and of course had to get their famous mint tea! The food is very comforting and delicious! Side point: I won't take any point off because it's not the restaurants fault, but I was shocked to see so many homeless people walking around the restaurant especially a block away where they camp out. What a wonderful little cafe! The food was amazing, service was great and ambiance was colorfully decorated in Morrocan handicrafts. We were in downtown Portland and did a search on Tunisian food, but didn't find anything nearby, but there were listings for Morrocan food, including this little place a few blocks from the hotel. It is not in the best part of town, but has apparently been there many years. We had to order food at the counter, and had to use a square to see the menu. We weren't super hungry, so we ordered 2 cups of Moroccan yellow split pea soup, 2 carrot salads and 2 B'stilla. The soup was amazing and we could have eaten more. In retrospect we could have shared the salads and B'stilla, because the portions were huge. Everything was excellent and we had plenty of leftovers to bring back to the hotel. While we were there, there a couple of people who came in just for tea to go, so when we were ready to leave I ordered Morrocan tea. It was boiling hot and absolutely wonderful! Owners is an absolute badass and sweetheart with an extensive culinary background spanning businesses and cuisines that might surprise you, but it made sense to me after tasting the divine food being served here. I got a chicken bastilla, a 1000 year old dish that still holds up today with a delicately flakey exterior dough covered in cinnamon and powdered sugar with a chicken + spice stuffing that is a divine combination. The main course I got was a kefta tagine with the fluffiest couscous you could imagine and an almost shatshuka quality to the tomato sauce mixture but even more delicate. First time here and not disappointed! We ordered the Chicken and Olives as well as the Seafood Tagine. The spices were perfectly blended to give each dish a unique and delicious flavor. The portions were quite plentiful and we went home with some to enjoy the next day. The owner/chef was great in helping us with that placing our order and even went out of his way to make us mint iced tea without adding green tea. It felt like we were having a homemade meal as the chef brought out our food to the table. This was a great find! We came for lunch and easily had enough food for dinner (maybe even breakfast the next day)! There seemed to be just one guy working there; he was friendly and clearly super efficient! 5 stars for him! You set up and bus the tables yourself, which was fine by me. The place is nicely decorated, and our table faced a little cacti garden that lined one window. I also liked the music -- there was some great guitar mixed in there! The seafood tagine was good! There was a good mix of seafood (scallops, shrimp, and fish) and veggies too. It was a tad too salty but I only noticed after a few bites. The potato appetizer Makouda was delicious- the accompanying tomato sauce was quite spicy but thankfully, it was just on the border of the plate, so we tried to avoid it as much as possible. A great gem find! Props to the owner for running this establishment as a one man show - from handling transactions to cooking to cleaning. This is more of a fast casual place where you order at the counter and you bus your own tables, which totally makes sense to ensure the owner delivers high quality food timely. We went here around 7pm on Friday and it was fairly busy, taking the last table that can seat 4+ people which somehow turned out to be the best table in the house - next to plants and a nice door, but it wasn't cold despite being seated next to the entrance with many people coming in and out. We ordered a lot of dishes to share family style, for more variety: Dip duo - zaalouk (tomato / eggplant) + chakchouka (roasted red pepper) - served with one pita bread which is very chewy and soft on the inside. It would be nice to have more than one pita bread but otherwise this dish was well executed. The zaalouk has a nice smoky flavor and I enjoyed it despite not being a fan of eggplant in general. Roasted red pepper was also very flavorful, kind of like a jam in the way they prepare it. Seafood tangine - you get a choice of rice or couscous for the tangine dishes so we selected differently for different tangines. The seafood tangine has generous amounts of small scallops, small shrimp, and fish arranged in couscous and some grilled vegetables. It is great that seafood is the same price as the other options which was the appeal to trying this dish out. Kefta tangine - beef meatball. This tangine comes with egg (with yolk that is somewhat runny) and we selected rice for this tangine. This is the best tangine dish we ordered. Merguez tangine - lamb sausage. This one was alright compared to the other tangines here. It was a bit surprising that there is a heavy spicy kick to the dish, but it was still a solid dish. I wished the lamb sausage had a bit more spice. Soup (split pea soup) - the soup has a deep pea flavor with a thick texture so it is quite substantial. Normally the soup is individual portion but since we ordered so much food, we decided to just share one soup just to try it out. Moroccan mint tea (large) - beautifully presented in an intricate teapot. Because there are 4 of us, we got 4 different cups as usually, the owner says the large is meant for 2-3 people only and the individual portion is for 1-2 people. The tea is quite sweet but not overbearing in the sense that I would feel sick after. The mint is fresh mint brewed which makes the tea particularly flavorful. Don't skip out on this especially if you go here with a group. The final total of all this came out to be around $17 per person which was an amazing deal for food of high caliber. There is a slight mishap of the dip duo given to the wrong table but the owner was quick to remake the dish and give it to us. Also, the restroom setup is weird as you have to go out of the restaurant and enter an unmarked door to use the restroom, as due to hygiene reasons, customers are not allowed to walk through the kitchen hall to enter the restroom which makes sense. Despite some blemishes to the dining experience, the overall food and experience are still strong 5 stars.
