I tried out Katak this past weekend and I have to say it was overall a pleasant experience. The lady that helped us, she said she was also the owner was very helpful and friendly. She recommended I try the longan juice which was delicious. I ordered the taro tolls something I had never seen before and I have to say they were pretty good. My mom ordered the papaya salad and she enjoyed it. I also had the hainanese chicken which was also recommended but I have to say had the ginger sauce not been included it would not have been something to write home about. Their menu not extensive at all so if you're looking for options, this will probably not be the eight place for you. Also, for my vegans friends out there, I didn't really see any vegan friendly dishes other than the taro rolls.

Heard that there was a new Thai restaurant in downtown Oceanside, so I went to go check out Katak Thai Kitchen. Katak Thai Kitchen just opened up to the former location of Tasty Pot Taiwanese Hot Pot. They are located on 1058 Mission Ave, across from the Oceanside High school and in the same shopping center as Walmart. This small business was created with the highlight of their curry chicken pastry puffs, which are made & distributed to other Thai restaurants in San Diego. This also appears to be the owners first brick & mortar. The interior is spacious and can accommodate families, groups, as well as couples. There's seating isn't ultra comfortable with its metal backing, but it serves its purpose. The interior decor is simple and has small nods to the Thai culture with plants as well. There are 2 mounted televisions that are playing food network programs. Their menu has one side for their food and another side for their drinks. There's about 9 food options and 9 drink flavors. Drinks include: Thai coffee, green tea, longan juice, roselle juice, chrysanthemum tea and their famous Thai tea. Foods include: Papaya Salad Combo, Som Tum Thai, Som Tum Pu Pla Ra, Crispy Fried Wontons, Beef or Pork Meatball Skewers, taro egg rolls, fish balls and their popular Curry Puffs. Service was very attentive (I was the only customer in there at the time) and they appeared to have friends of the family assisting. I'm not sure if they have permanent wait-staff and how they will manage if they have a full house of customers. Overall, the portion size for the papaya salad was good and it was very flavorful, but also has a hefty price. Their hainanese chicken rice was okay & their fried chicken was good as well, but nothing to write home about. What really made each meal was their flavorful brown dipping sauce. You can dip anything in it and it boost the flavor over 100%! I can also see why their curry chicken pastry puffs are popular and they had the perfect crispy texture outside, and they were extremely flavorful inside, with the meat and the vegetables. I will say that only having 2 pieces for $12 was slightly discouraging. To me, the shining star was their mango, sticky rice! It's probably one of the best ones I've had in a while and their mangoes are perfect; perfectly ripened, sweet & soft and when coupled with the coconut milk rice, you simply have an amazing dessert that is flawless. Overall, I feel that this place does have some potential, but they will definitely need to revamp their menus, and I recommended that they use actual photos of their food, instead of using AI. I did notice that they announced that they will be adding a new dessert item to their menu online. So, I like the way they are expanding their menu options. I look forward to trying them again in the future, when they have refined their menu and their methods.

Great service! Warm environment. Highly recommend the Papaya Salad. They don't have Pad Thai, but offer some more authentic Thai dishes worth checking out.

I had an amazing meal! The papaya salad was fresh, flavorful, and had the perfect balance of spicy, sweet, and tangy. The Hainanese chicken rice was incredibly tender, juicy, and served with delicious, fragrant rice. We also tried both noodle dishes, and they were packed with authentic Thai flavors and cooked perfectly. Every dish tasted fresh and homemade. The food, service, and overall experience were excellent. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for authentic Thai food--I can't wait to come back! Sorry we eat it all no good picture

The chicken combo is my absolute favorite on the menu! Everything is always fresh, flavorful, and consistently delicious. The crispy chicken, hainan chicken, fragrant rice, and tasty sauces make the perfect combination. The soup is always a nice bonus, too. The customer service is always friendly and welcoming, and the food quality has been consistently excellent every time I've visited. Highly recommend!

The place is very nice and I love the rooster decor. The service was great. The menu is limited but she said it was to differentiate from other places.

Thinking back, each time I visited this shop was right after completing an important task. When they first opened their brick and mortar shop, it was a very short walk from the OC Superior Court. Recently, I've learned that they have relocated to 4th Street Market (4SM), which is about a 15 minute walk from the courts. This is a good move as the new location allows for more visibility and plenty of seating within 4SM. Food/Drinks: Hainan Chicken Rice - this entree is just as good as it was four years ago, but instead of pickled veggies, they have now substituted it with fresh cucumbers. Definitely recommend. Crispy Chicken Salad - wanted some greens, but can't recall this entree being all that memorable. Larb Crispy Chicken Rice - wow! For those craving more spice and flavor, this is the one to order. Would highly recommend for those wanting more umami and texture. Thaiger Milk Tea - I liked the play on words here and also they used to offer a small and large size. I definitely recalled this being extremely sweet. I guess there's a reason this is no longer on the menu. They now offer a rewards program supported by Toast, so returning customers can earn one point for each dollar spent. Shame that I don't live in the surrounding area anymore or else I would be here whenever I'm at 4SM. Metered parking right outside the food hall or at one of the nearby parking garages. Service is also very friendly and helpful!

I decided to try the classic Hainan chicken with ginger rice. I appreciated that they let me choose two free sauces to go with the rice compared to other Hainan chicken spots. The ginger scallion sauce tasted a bit sour, not sure if it's a different recipe than I'm used to or it went bad. And the chopped ginger and chili I had thought was a sauce was just the chopped vegetables itself. The chicken portions were great, but meat was a bit on the drier side. I love how the rice was broken rice though. And the soup was a different taste than what I'm used to as a side soup.

When you dine in they bring metal cups with an icy cold carafe of cold water to your table. Customer service is efficient. The person behind the counter is very soft spoken and gives you a slight smile but gets your order correct every time. Hands down so don't argue with me they have the absolute BEST orange chicken. It has a slight crunch on the outside while tender and juicy in the inside. The orange sauce is perfection. It has a great balance of salty and sweet without being overly sweet like an orange candy. It's not tart and you can tell the ingredients are fresh. They put the right amount of sauce so it is not drenched. Pair it with the garlic rice and the salad that crops and fresh no dressing is even needed. Order this and you will be happy. The regular white rice is good too! The Zapp chicken is crunchy, juicy and spicy. I normally cannot eat spicy but this one is perfect. Since my 24 year old son told me about this restaurant I've been here four times in the past month.
