I believe she did not read or understand our situation as stated in the document, as her advice was absolutely horrible. First, she said our landlord could take it to trial, and it will "tank" our credit. Well, it would not tank our credit, as it had nothing to do w/ non-payment of rent (we were up-to-date and current with our rent) - this was a NO-CAUSE eviction. Secondly, when I asked about the landlord putting the wrong address on the lease, she said the incorrect address would have "no traction at all." However, this played a huge role in our defense as the landlord was committing bank fraud by claiming our rental was owner occupied. The address on our lease was his physical address (across the street) so he could misrepresent our rental as his occupied residence. Thirdly, the lease was never properly executed. The landlord emailed us a copy, we signed and emailed it back but never received a signed copy in return. (We did not know at the time the address was different as we lived out-of-state.) Our case had a lot more to this (as stated in my 2-page detailed document), but I only highlighted a few of the issues that Ms. Powell responded to with her "advice". In addition, we were only asking to stay in the rental 2-3 more months until our new house was built. Ms. Powell also advised that "it would be better" to just move out before we could be evicted. This would mean finding temporary housing, moving our 4-bedroom house into storage and then moving it from storage into the new house, and boarding 3 pets. We hired another lawyer who listened to our story and was extremely confident we had a strong case. He turned out to be a godsend and we won with flying colors. Do yourself a favor, if you have a case with a variety of twists & turns like we had, find another lawyer who can handle something more complicated. Perhaps this was above Ms Powell's capabilities or she did not care, as after our first call and a couple of email exchanges, she never bothered to return any further calls from us.

This was my first experience with a criminal attorney and what a disappointing experience. I hired Mr. Freeby to appear at Superior Court to ask for a continuance on my behalf. He requested a $2500 retainer and explained his fee structure. At no point did he indicate that the retainer was non refundable. Per our agreement his retainer would ONLY become a flat fee upon the filing of criminal charges. The plantiff who filed the action failed to appear the case was dismissed. Total time spent on this case: less than 2 hours. Mr. Freeby now claims that the retainer is his money even though the agreement we signed clearly states "that client's fee shall be held in trust and shall not be a flat fee until the attorney receives notice that charges have been filed against the client". No criminal charges were ever filed against me. No trust account was ever established and no accounting of his time was provided. Please be careful when dealing with Mr. Freeby

I read Phillip L's review and he clearly doesn't understand the different between a retainer (a payment for availability) and a fee (for the work done). If you hire a lawyer before charges are filed, there is no case for them to work on, only the allegations. If they get the case dismissed before it is filed, then the lawyer has earned his retainer. The best result is often the cheapest. I just don't understand why Phillip L. is complaining the lawyer got the case dismissed. Weird. Also, no one would ever hire a lawyer just to get a continuance. Either you want the lawyer to represent you or not. Freeby is approachable and you can ask him anything. But don't whine that he got your case dismissed.

(I am dealing with an argumentative, abusive ex husband who I still coown realestate with. He was living at the property without paying the mortgage. He has destroyed my credit and since then, before being court ordered to move out, trashed the place, throwing a chair through a very large expensive window and leaving urine on the floor. Among many other things.) After explaining my situation to this young lawyer in a fancy suit, he told me I didn't need an attourney, and, "why can't you just talk to your ex husband? I don't think you need an attourney at this point." I told him I can't talk to him, thats why the marriage didn't work etc. This was incredibly frustrating at a time when I didn't need another frustration.
