Really weird, unprofessional, steer clear, Will try to talk to you into something you don't need

I received Neurofeedback therapy from Dr. Abbott for several months for issues from Major Depression and Epilepsy. The work she did significantly reduced my symptoms and made my medication extremely more effective. (She's not a chiropractor, but a psychologist that specializes in brain therapy for those who are looking for a chiro.) I would love to continue working with her in the future because her treatment has been the most effective out of all the others (I've tried a lot of treatments!) if I have more issues in the future. She worked with me and my insurance issues with a great deal of patience and knowledge. My insurance company is very slow to pay and I've had other clinicians try to stop treatment until they were paid. This was not the case with Dr. Abbott. She took a STRONG personal interest in my case. I should also not that I hate all thing yelp because it over represents complaints. Having said that, I felt compelled to sign on to this horrible site in her defense after reading the negative reviews. Lol! read more

Dr. Abbott was recommended to to me through a friend who experienced good results through neurofeedback therapy with her. I was very nearly out of options to find relief for my son regarding insomnia, a learning disability, and some emotional struggles. I had tried everything I had researched on these subjects - from other medical, academic and behavioral therapies, diet changes, regulated schedules, exercise, using specialized light bulbs and light blocking screen protectors, and trying a variety of supplements. While I did see improvement, it just wasn't enough to take away the constant struggle, and in some cases the effects didn't last very long. So, I gave Dr, Abbott and neurotherapy a shot. I'm glad I did. The investment in time, money, and effort was completely worth it. It wasn't necessarily a fast process. It took us about a year of two sessions per week with a few breaks to sessions once a week when we needed to do so. The cost was minimal in relation to the results. When compared to what I used to pay per month for medication, counseling, tutors, specialists, and supplements, it's a bargain as it eliminated those on-going costs completely. After a few months, I noticed some improvement. I was cautiously optimistic for quite a while because the effectiveness of it can be difficult to gauge, and then after about 6 months the peace we experienced as a family was irrefutable. He is now happy, organized, on-time, more independent, sleeps well, more social, getting grades that I never thought I'd see (no medication), and handles school and communication challenges so calmly and impressively. He is now self-aware of things like homework and chores, and then taking care of them on his own (cleaning his room, taking out the weekly trash, preparing for classes and tests). He handles changes in schedules and circumstances in stride - the impact now is minimal on his level of stress. This all might sound silly to someone who hasn't had experience caring for a child with a disability, but those who have will understand how dramatic the constant challenge can be and what this means. I'm no longer the person who is afraid to plan our participation in events. I'm no longer constantly pushing for things to be done - all on his own, he works with me and in most cases had it done by the time I mention it. I keep talking about how happy this makes me as a parent, but he is a thriving young man now. He's happy, he's involved, he is invested, and he is succeeding. I honestly hadn't hoped for things to be this good. I would have called it a success with passing grades, two hours more of sleep and less anxiety! I am telling you all of these wonderful things because I'm just so amazed, happy, and grateful for the availability of these techniques as well as for Dr. Abbott. She has been incredibly patient with all of us through this process, and she took the time to explain everything from beginning to end as well as refreshing our memory on a few things from time to time. She was brilliant in not wasting our time by sitting with us through every session to supervise, ensure accuracy and making adjustments in real time to optimize settings throughout the session. She met every request, every question, and exceeded our hopes. I wish I had the opportunity and access to this sooner. I am truly grateful. I was so impressed that I decided to try this for the memory and mental fogginess I was experiencing due to my own medical conditions. Treatment moved much quicker for my situation, and the results were great. I hope that sharing my experience with Dr. Abbott and with this type of therapy was helpful. I have been a client/patient with Dr. Abbot for nearly 10 years, and have had consistently positive experiences with her. I initially went to Dr. Abbott because she offers EMDR, which I wanted to try, after a great deal of good quality but minimally helpful therapy with other providers over a number of years, because I was having trouble achieving improvements in my PTSD. Dr. Abbot was calm, quiet, reassuring, and explained how EMDR worked and what we would do. The EMDR sessions made a dent in my PTSD that no talk therapy had made. We have done one-on-one talk therapy, where she has helped me with depression, anxiety, and the PTSD. I resisted doing neurofeedback for a couple of years because it was not covered by insurance, but it was clear after a while that we had reached the limits of what better-known approaches could achieve. We did twice-weekly neurofeedback for several months and it broke the impasse that had been holding me back from better managing my anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Dr. Abbott provided readings and articles and titles to explore for more information about neurofeedback, its efficacy, the studies that demonstrated that the brain could be trained out of certain patterns, back *into* those patterns, and then back *out* of the patterns again. Although we were unable to find a protocol that fully addressed my migraines, the fact that my ability to perceive the world in more than black-and-white terms has improved so tremendously following neurofeedback has changed how I am able to interact with others including my children. After my own improvements with neurofeedback, I took my daughter, age 7 at the time, to have work with neurofeedback on her anxiety. After a few months, my daughter returned to the happier, more carefree, less worried child she had been before a very tense kindergarten year. My son, who has high-functioning autism, also did neurofeedback with Dr. Abbott to help with his autism, ADHD, and perfectionism. He needed to have twice-weekly sessions for over a year, but his ability to get started on a task, to persevere on a task, and his tolerance for frustration have all improved dramatically not only over the time he was receiving neurofeedback, but also since that time. We tried medicating him, and it was not sufficient to help him, but with the combination, the rate at which he improved in neurofeedback when he had the extra focus of the medications was dramatic; for us it was the combination of the two. He finished neurofeedback (for now) with a QEEG that looks much cleaner and less anxious and has become nearly independent on his homework most of the time. I continue to go back for "tune-up" appointments as I have flare-ups. I suspect I will be a client/patient with Dr. Abbott until one of us is no longer in the area; she has changed my life. read more

After initial assessment with EEG feedback, Dr. Abbott recommended neurofeedback therapy at $90 a pop, twice a week for up to six months, which would not be covered by insurance. I scheduled a follow-up at which I asked lots of questions about the benefits: Are there randomized, double-blind trials of this treatment? (No.) How do you know patients are getting better? (Subjective feedback.) Could other, less costly methods provide similar benefits? At this point, Dr. Abbott appeared annoyed and began escorting me to the door. When I offered to pay for the initial assessment, she said it would be $500. She had NEVER mentioned any fee for the assessment at any time. When I stared at her, unable to even respond, she practically shoved me out the door. She said, verbatim, "Get out of here," and muttered something about the $13,000 she paid for the equipment. I really can't assess the effectiveness of neurofeedback as a treatment modality, but I do not recommend this practitioner. read more

What do you call a person who claims to be "busy" and then finds an opening to see you the very next morning? When you tell her about the heavy traffic during that time she suggests, quickly tells you that you are wrong? What do you call a person who claims to have a client coming in right after you, so she has to hurry you out of the office and no one shows up? What do you call a person who, in the middle of conducting the QEEG testing, tells you to calm your thoughts and then picks up an incoming call on her cellphone right in the middle of the test as she is sitting next to you? What do you call a person who tells you claims her only opening for neurofeedback sessions is right on the very day you can't make it? But is constantly saying under her breath that she doesn't know what this or that client's future plans are about continuing their neurofeedback sessions? What do you call a person who immediately wants to find out whether you are booking sessions with her before she's even met you to go over the results of your QEEG test? I know what I would call her, and it's NOT professional. read more

This woman should never be around children. I brought my son to her for a QEEG. My son is 6 years of age and has sensory integration disorder, anxiety and attention difficulties. He had received neurofeedback for 4 months (from a different practitioner who recommended he have this QEEG) and had an EEG 4 years ago at Children's Memorial. This woman must have no experience at all with children let alone children with any special needs (I'm not sure how many typically developing children are out getting QEEGs). She did not talk to him about what she was going to do or explain anything or try to make it fun or put him at ease at all. He was reluctant to put the cap on his head (he usually just has loose electrodes on his head not a full cap) but I held on to him so she could put it on while she muttered that she "had to be somewhere at noon" (completely unprofessional). She had a syringe with gel in it to squirt into the cap. She did not explain to him what it was or show him that there was just gel in it but it looked like a needle and she picked it up and aimed for his head and he cried "no shots!" She then yelled at him "It's not a shot! Jesus!" I told her not to yell at my son, that he was scared and that looked like a shot to him. She yelled "God!" at us and then I scooped up my son and left. This woman is terrible with people let alone children. I am a pediatric speech pathologist and have worked with children with a wide variety of special needs (many with far more severe difficulties than my son has) for over 20 years and I can not even comprehend how someone could even act like this (screaming "God!" and "Jesus!" at children and their parents, telling a patient that they have to be somewhere and acting annoyed that the child is fearful of the procedure). She was completely unprofessional, impatient and just rude. I tried to give no stars but the site would not allow me to post with no stars. read more
