We went to Kat's on the recommendation of a friend. Over the years, my enthusiasm for steaks out has waned - generally too much money for a steak that's just o.k. The steak I make at home is better and less expensive. So while I was cautiously optimistic, the thing that really intrigued me about Kat's was the photo of their onion rings. More about that in a minute. My wife and I split (as we often do) one meal - here, the 10 ounce sirloin. It was great: I think the best steak I've had out ever. Kinda funny, but true, every bite I took I was a little surprised at how good it was. Well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My wife liked her half, too. So why not 5 stars? Well, I'm frugal (think cheap), and the steak + house potatoes + salad was $28. The menu clearly states if you split an entree they will bring a second salad and add a $9 upcharge. So $18.50 (dividing in half) for a 5oz sirloin, about 7 thin slices of potato, and house salad is a bit much in my opinion. Really, I mean REALLY, I'm not complaining about you, Kat's. You're not out of the norm for pricing in my experience. But this is why we prefer to eat at home. Ok, onion rings: we got the half order, $9, and it was enough for 3, maybe 4, folks. That didn't stop my wife and me from cleaning the plate! In fact, I considered eating the plate. These are done exactly the way I wish I could do at home: thinly sliced, lightly dusted NOT battered, perfectly seasoned. Terrific! Kat's will be a special dine out destination for us, just not often because of the price. Again, best steak I've had out ever, and the onion rings... perfect! The folks were very nice, too. I had the onion rings for an appetizer. Filet medallions over rice with grilled green peppers and a side of asparagus. Rum cake with ice cream for dessert. Make sure you have a reservation. It's a small place with amazing service. It also offers a full bar and a patio area. The tables are covered in white table cloths and set beautifully. I recommend having a Moscow mule. I had heard so many good things about this place. I've had such high hopes and expectations. Do you know what the saving grace is of this steakhouse? The beautiful amazing soul of Kats dad manning the grill. What a blessing he is. When we walked in for our 8pm reservation. We were greeted not by Kat but two atrociously loud groups of people competing to speak over the other. When we were shown our table, in the front next to these two groups I asked to be moved, she couldn't even hear me over them. I had to basically yell. How were my significant other and I supposed to enjoy an expensive date night out if we couldn't even converse? We were seated just on the other side of the doorway behind the obviously intoxicated group of the two. The entire time we were there neither groups volume was addressed so they just continued to get louder trying to talk over one another. Their appetizer section is wanting for more. There is no bread, no rolls like most steakhouses offer. The menu, expect your eyes to roll back and wallet to hurt. $44 for most steak options that come with a salad and 1 side. The salad is spring mix with shaved Parmesan, and 1 single cherry tomato, it was severely lacking for what we paid. We both got company potatoes because I had heard so many praising them, that you HAVE to get them. Don't. They're basic shredded frozen hash browns with zero flavor. Unless you like the sour cream taste with toasted corn flakes... I also got roasted carrots, those were okay. But again lacking a flavor. The kebab veggies were beautiful. Not over done. Lightly salted. The rice was more of a risotto consistency and lacked flavor. But again, I will state, the only saving grace here, is the beautiful man cooking the steaks who was genuinely excited and happy to be cooking them for us. Because while a little under seasoned, they were cooked absolutely beautiful. However, be warned, the filets are not real filet mignon. Ours had fat and inedible gristle. Real ones do not have that in them. The ribeye was to be expected however for a $44 steak I'd still expect a better cut. I had several patches of inedible gristle. As we were celebrating my spouses birthday we were asking about some desserts, he decided on the creme brûlée which they stuck a candle on for him. He thought he had ordered my apple pie as well when we got his, but it never came and I told him I didn't need it anyway. By this time I had developed a headache and desire to just get out of there because both tables in the adjoining room were still there and still at a decibel you'd expect at a bar and not a nice restaurant. The Rum cake is supposed to be homemade with real rum. We didn't have that but it sounded enticing. At the end of the night we still left a nice tip, because the dad deserved it and had earned it. He was beaming with pride in his work and his daughter. He was personable and friendly and kind. Not sure it would be worth a revisit for me as the price does not match the product. read more

Absolutely incredible place. From someone who's family grew up in Lamont and has spent many summers there, and has known this building as Simple Simons, etc. - what a great addition to this small town. My husband and I have had filet mignon coast to coast and we both agree this is #1. Never have I had a filet that is so thick, tender, perfectly seasoned, and spot on medium rare. (Besides the last time I was at Kat's - Sept 21). We currently live in Stillwater and it is ABSOLUTELY worth the hour drive. Make a reservation - it is needed, and be kind to wait staff as this is a family owned and operated business! And of course, the company potatoes- just wow. Update from my last review: I talked up this place since we were here over a year ago. Made a reservation for our kids and us, so there were 6 of us. All 6 of us ordered ribeyes. Somehow mine didn't at all look like everyone else's. We all ordered medium rare, mine was medium well it looked like. It also was a very thin steak, while my whole family got a steak that was over an inch thick, mine was pushing it to be 3/4 of an inch. It also was not a nice big steak, it was like in pieces, 3 to be exact. I had 3 tiny bites and quit. So chewy and I can't stand over cooked meat. I was just dumbfounded actually that our food was so good last time we were here and was so terrible this time. For me anyway. I just wanted to cry and sat there heartbroken. I was waiting for my boyfriend to say something to the waitress and he never did.... At that point I was too emotional to say anything because I was just done at that point. So I sat there really just heartbroken. To pay all that money for a steak that was like mine? Just crushing, that's for sure. Finally made the trip north to check out the steakhouse everyone is talking about. Well worth the trip, only two semi concerns but neither is worth not making a reservation and enjoying a great meal. Those two issues were, small drinks. Really small cocktails, but they were good. The second the onion rings I would have preferred to be hot instead of just warm. Now the good! Nice crowd, families a few younger people on dates and older couples. So, not skewed to a certain crowd. Quiet, unpretentious, friendly staff who seem happy to see you. Heck the town even had a parade for us! Well maybe not for us but the local emergency services vehicles and some locals in cars did have a parade and threw candy to the kids. Kind of a fun thing on a beautiful fall evening. Now to the food. Onion rings were light, tasty and not a bit greasy, just awesome rings of heaven, but I wish they had been hot. Regardless very good! The wife had shrimp and rice which she thought was exceptional. I lean to her experience there since she was raised in Louisiana. I had the New York strip which came out perfect. Any strip is going to have a little inedible fat that lends to the flavor but this one had very little. That shows me they are careful on their supplier. Charred to perfection! Honestly I cook an incredible steak myself and was a fair judge of meat back in the day and I was impressed. Getting that perfect char is an art and they nailed it. I like mine medium and it was perfect done as well. The accompanying salad was fresh, green and had a very mild blue cheese dressing that I enjoyed. Everyone has raved about the house potatoes and for good reason. I now have a goal to try and duplicate them because they were an awesome alternative to a baked or mashed potatoe. Scalloped potatoes with an excellent sauce and I think parmesan cheese. We split a carrot cake for dessert, but had to take it home because we were stuffed! The carrot cake was perfect, not overly sweet and just right. BTW, half order for onion rings was more than enough for the two of us. All in all, well worth the hour long trip and I would gladly recommend to anyone taking the time to check them out. Been there 2 times and headed again tomorrow. What a great little place. Get a reservation if you want to go. Can get a little loud inside. Not a quiet place but that means people are happy and enjoying themselves. Famous for the onion app. It's really good. Not a full size onion ring but still very yummy. Eat em while they are hot. Great salad. Love that blue cheese. Steaks.... Oh man the steaks. The first time I went it was perfect. What a great flavor on the steak and prepared perfectly. The second time it was a bit salty. That's saying a lot from me but the middle meaty part was great. Just the fatty melty part that was salty...but still great. Baked potatoes are always great. The other style of potatoes are good. Just not my thing. Dessert...get the rum cake. Get one for your left hand and one for the right hand. Take one home and say its for grandma. Need to sell it with a shot to pour on top and light. Food was absolutely by far FANTASTIC. However, the service was HORRIBLE. The first time we asked for refills, the waitress told us she would be back with the water pitcher. However, she never came back but was too busy chatting with several different tables, with what I'm guessing was frequent customers. Finally, when our food came our she refilled our water glasses and complained about how heavy the water pitcher was for her wrist. Then, when she was taking our dessert order, we asked for another refill. Once again, we waited and waited, and she never came back but was getting everyone refills around us while she was still chatting at other tables. FINALLY, my husband went to the bar and asked the bartender for water refills, and we got our own water. She never came back to check on us, so we saw a younger girl help deliver food to the other tables, and we asked her for our ticket to pay because who knows when our waitress would be back to check on us. We dined at Kat's last night for the first time. Our reservation was for 7:15, and we were seated almost immediately. The hostess was very friendly. Our server, I don't know her name but discovered she was also a kindergarten teacher, was incredible. She was fun, attentive, and made us feel very at home. We started with the onion rings. It was an enormous portion, served with homemade ranch. They were good, but I probably wouldn't order them again. They were crispy, but a little greasy, and there was a flavor I couldn't identify, but didn't love. Next, we had a delicious spring mix salad, again with the ranch. The shaved parmesan really made the salad. Most of our party ordered the beef bourguignon, and I am so glad I did! A generous portion of tender beef in a rich sauce, served with delicious, creamy mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. That is one of the best dishes I've ever had. It was very flavorful. We were too full for dessert, but I look forward to trying one the next time we're there. My husband had an old-fashioned and seemed to enjoy it. The food was really nice. Our service was great. The only negative is that it was quite loud. We were seated in a booth at the front of the restaurant, near the bar and the door. At times, we couldn't hear our server or each other. I wasn't overly impressed with Kat's. Seating in the establishment is limited and requires reservation. My steak had grizzle in it. The waitress I had picked my napkin off the floor and expected me to use it. At least this was my assumption when she picked it up off the floor and then said "here is your napkin." The steak was tender but I didn't get a steak knife until I had nearly finished it. I suppose if your in Lamont it's worth a try. If you have another option the.
