I have finally found my forever pharmacy! I had been a customer of Bartell's for many, many years, and was bummed when Rite Aid bought them and more-or-less put them out of business. It took a long while to find a replacement pharmacy, especially one that would honor my insurance. (The latter bit ended up being surprisingly difficult!). Anyway, no problems transferring my prescription to their shop. Their staff walked me through the process and were very helpful. They honored my insurance, so my regular prescription cost me nothing (as it had at Bartell's). Staff was helpful on the phone and in person. I think a lot of people are transferring prescriptions to Katterman's since the pharmacy staff seemed slammed when I went in. But no problems, they took the time to help me. Only confusing bit: you pick up the prescription at a counter at the back of the store, where the pharmacists work. You then take it up to the front counter to "pay" for it, even if you have no co-pay. I think I understand the process now, but the two-step process seemed a little odd (since, again, I owed nothing). But everyone was helpful, so no worries! My new pharmacy! What a relief to have one, and for it to be a nice little local shop. read more

They have a great book selection, an AMAZING puzzle selection, gifts, puzzles, travel stuff- and then also all of the regular pharmacy stuff you could possibly need. They filled a compound scrip for me within a day that they said may take 3-5 days. Love them. read more

Whether it's seasonal decor, cards, or kids toys. (By the way they have a superb selection of kids activities and things for long car rides or plane rides). Steve and Beverly sold Kattermans, summer 2025, and retired. It is now owned by two pharmacists who also own the local pharmacy at the Wallingford Center. Pharmacy closures in NE Seattle have brought more people to Kattermans. It still has much the same feel. The data and rx systems have been replaced and are now more efficient. Enlargement of the pharmacy area has reduced the commercial inventory a bit but offers more privacy and a larger vaccine area. Overall service seems a bit more efficient, though perhaps slightly less "personal" in the sense that a short chat with the pharmacist is now a thing of the past. I am still very glad that Kattermans is there and appreciate the enhanced efficiency. I wish the new owners great success. This is still a community gem and I will do everything to support them against the onslaught of corporate pharma. read more

I was referred here from UW for a travel consult & was happy to have attended the appointment with Beverly. Scheduling an appointment online makes it very easy; keep in mind weekends are busier for them yet the overall experience was worthwhile! This is a charming neighborhood spot with locals coming in for pharmaceutical or gift shopping needs; the staff were friendly & attentive. Beverly took the time to ask what my goals were for the consult, was reassuring, & gave me the immunizations that were necessary (in addition to possible Rx if I need it) during travel. The place to go if you're visiting from out of state. This was the only pharmacy I could find in Seattle that would fill an antibiotic prescription faxed to them by my doctor in British Columbia. The chain stores said they couldn't because of their corporate computer systems, although they knew Washington law would allow it, and the two other independents I asked just declined without explanation. Otherwise this is simply a nice store with good parking and access. Their phone was out when I contacted them, but they had a text line listed on their website, which worked out fine. read more

Writing about a bad experience with Katterman's. It's related to their pharmacy and their pharmacist's good judgment while dispensing medication. My elderly old mom had to be hospitalized for a herniated disc and after a longer than hoped for hospitalization, she spent months re-cooping at our home. It was a difficult time for our family. Mom was in a lot of pain, had great difficulty moving and I'd never been a full time caretaker (well, except for being a parent) before. Being in the sandwich generation is no picnic! I decided to try Kattermans pharmacy for her prescription, which was near to the house. At the time it was difficult to leave Mom for any more than a short period of time, so the proximity to our home was important, given my other responsibilities. Every time I picked up her medication at Kattermans, I was questioned and treated suspiciously by the pharmacist. Did I understand how strong these drugs were? How addictive? Why wasn't my mom (who at the time, could barely move) coming herself to pick up the prescription? When did pharmacy shaming become a thing? I've read since that this type of "pharmacy shaming" is happening regularly across the country to women picking up their birth control, people with anxiety picking up their antidepressants, and I can vouch that here at Katterman's its also happening to the elderly and their caretakers. Thankfully, Mom was only on the medication for a few months. I realize I should have pulled my script, and in hindsight I should have moved to another pharmacy, but being a caretaker is overwhelming, and honestly it felt like one more thing to manage. During this time, a simple trip to Katterman's became a dreaded, embarrassing and stressful experience. The warnings were so stern, I questioned Mom's physician, a respected gerontology expert at Swedish. He insisted that she would be fine, and said the pharmacy didn't know what they were talking about. The risk of addiction was small, and she absolutely needed the medication to manage her pain and make improvements. While we had just a handful of pick ups at Kattermans', this public shaming (the pharmacy is out in the open, in the center of the store) because they deemed the medication suspect (the drugs prescribed were Schedule 1) meant that I was also suspect. I was treated like a drug seeker, rather than a caretaker. It was incredibly awkward, awful and felt unnecessary given the diagnosis, a script and calls from the doctor's office to the pharmacy. This public shaming went on each time I picked up her script, even after the doctor's office spoke to the pharmacist directly. Thankfully, mom did fully recover and now is living pain and medication free. She's also living independently again. Even so, this incredibly uncomfortable experience at Katterman's stayed with me. Katterman's needs to take a hard look at their approach in treating their customers suspiciously, or shaming them, without having full information or a realistic assessment of a patient's medical status or treatment plan. I would not use Katterman's pharmacy again. read more

This pharmacy is a tad far away from us to be our regular pick-up point, but it has really come through for us in a pinch a couple of times. 1) When my daughter was 2, this was the only place that could get her a flu shot outside her pediatrician's office. Most places won't take kids till they're ~ 4 yrs old, and the flu shot clinics at our ped's office were booked until November (um... flu season?). The friendly pharmacist gave her a shot with no complaints. We ended up paying out of pocket for it due to a minor mix-up, but it wasn't cost-prohibitive. 2) My husband was recently hospitalized and wanted to cut down on narcotics for pain. However, his allergies to corn and soy mean that OTC versions of acetaminophen are typically off limits and our previous sources (Kroger liquid gels and Tylenol sore throat liquid) have been discontinued. Katterman's compounding pharmacist, Lisa, not only had experience with doing capsules with just acetaminophen and knew what dose would be needed to avoid fillers, but also helped check our insurance when they tried to send me a CVS for generics after multiple calls. She communicated quickly via text to follow-up (so helpful because I have two small children and was also managing hospital visits) and has been a bright spot in a stressful experience. While we'll probably still use the big-name pharmacy up the street for minor needs like children's tylenol, Katterman's is our go-to for the hard-to-fix problems. read more

I never had a good experience at an immunization center until I went to Katterman's for a yellow fever shot. I have to say the experience was so easy it was almost a pleasure to be there. The paperwork was completed in minutes and the pharmacist said I could browse the store as it would take 15 mins for the vaccine to get ready. I picked up a snack while browsing and the nice lady at the front said I could eat it while waiting and pay later after my shot was done. I needed to get a yellow fever vaccine, and Katterman's proved to be a very easy place to obtain one. I booked a travel consult ($49) online. Beverly saw me on time and very clearly explained what was necessary and what was nice to have for each of the countries I'd be visiting. Her bedside manner was great, so don't fret if you don't enjoy medical institutions. I then received my yellow fever vaccine as well as the certificate, along with some other pills I needed. I was in and out in less than half an hour. Very painless! read more

Once you open Katterman's door, you feel transported to some other time. It happens in a good way, the "Back-to-the-Future-when-Marty-goes-back-to-the-good-part-of-the-past" kind of way. I immediately loved this neighborhood corner pharmacy. Being here reminded me of my childhood. The layout is a bit confusing but it doesn't matter...because you walk by shelves where the coolest things--from useful items to simple bagatelles--seem to magically wink at you. Picture yourself in an little urban labyrinth, strolling around and picking up clues to get to a treasure at some point! For those looking to get vaccinated, Katterman's is definitely a great option. Their immunizations range from Flu, MMR, Hepatitis A and B and Tetanus. They also provide travel immunizations all year round (such as Typhoid). I needed to get some of these vaccines. Following a recommendation, I ended in this quaint, lovely pharmacy. Beverly Schaefer, the head pharmacist and owner, was a sweetheart. She was really kind and professional. She explained everything regarding the process, step by step. She even faxed my records to my doctor, and gave me not one, but three lollipops for being such a great egg. They offer great non-mainstream products for several ailments. Some of their patients' services are cholesterol, PSA and bone density screenings, cane fitting, wound care supplies, prescriptions, among others. And I LOVED what they say on their website about their other products: "Our store offers an ever changing array of gift items, family games, puzzles, books, and extensive greeting card selection. Our staff can help you remedy any shopping dilemma as well as show you new and unusual items." Definitely worth going out of your way to check it out! read more

A well-run and beautiful corner-store pharmacy. It's hard to believe a place like this still exists in the world of today. Most of us get our Rx from chain stores and forget that this is how it was for a long time. And Katterman's is a reminder of why that's still a good idea. I discovered Katterman's amid the fiasco of H1N1 vaccines. I was comfortable with getting the vaccine for my child and getting a shot through our Virgina Mason pediatric care was a joke. Katterman's pharmacy was well-organized during the insanity. Taking names, handing out appointments and giving honest answers rather than more lies and hype. I was impressed. Aside from that, the store itself is beautiful and has become my stop for small gifts. Overall, a great neighborhood drugstore. read more

I haven't used this pharmacy for any prescriptions - this is just based on OTC stuff and general shopping. Katterman's has a bit of a weird vibe to me. The staff have always seemed kind of disinterested. It can be a little bit difficult to tell who actually works here, as there doesn't appear to be any kind of employee uniform or apron. I don't want to be the awkward person who talks to a customer thinking they're an employee! (I know how awkward it is for both people!) They have quite a large card selection here, and a good selection of children's toys. Some of the products are arranged a bit oddly, though. There are a lot of shelves packed into the space, but there's often only one of each item on the shelf, which makes it look empty and weird - it seems like there might be a better way to arrange things, because this makes the store look depleted. When I came in here the most recent time, my nose was assailed by a very strong blast of cheap flower perfume/air fresheners/candles/whatever. (Gardenia? Jasmine? That type of scent.) That whole display was near the door, but it smelled like it was one product in particular rather than a mix of them -- it was really way too strong and overpowering. Some items I've bought here include: a hair dryer, a big chunky puzzle for a young cousin's birthday gift, and some OTC products. If you live nearby this is probably the closest pharmacy that's not in U Village -- but Bartell's has a more reliable selection of non-prescription items. They carry almost no makeup here that I could see, just some cheap nail polish. Katterman's has a facebook page, but it hasn't been updated since January. It's August. I set up an appointment with a Pharmacist 2 weeks in advance and the Pharmacist decided not to show up that day and no one decided to give me a call or anything. If you have appointments here might be smart to call before you drive here to see if the person you have time set up with is even there. After trying them again for the second time the pharmacist was extremely polite and personable. They took off the consultation fee for missing the first appointment and helped me get set up for traveling overseas. I was recommended to come here for my travel immunizations, and I really like this pharmacy! There is a small parking lot off to the side of that is shared with other establishments. When you come inside, you will feel like you are inside a gift shop, but keep walking towards the back until you see some people waiting by the counter to get helped by one of the pharmacists. Beverly helped me a few times while I was getting my immunizations for my trip to Peru a few months back, and she was very friendly and helpful. We have quite a few prescriptions and are very happy with our experiences at this pharmacy. A couple of experiences: 1) We have a dog that is in a lot of pain. One of the pharmacists stayed late to fill the vet's prescription rather than make us wait a few days. 2) Recently, I spoke with Beverly about my concern with differences in a refilled prescription. She investigated what had happened and ultimately called me back to explain the discrepancy, assure me that prescription was the same dosage, and then refunded me for the confusion and trouble. read more

I like Katterman's quite a bit! Is was easy to schedule and get my flu shot. The staff was friendly and helpful. I plan to move all my prescriptions there in the future. While I was there getting my flu shot, I was able to pick up fun birthday gifts for my niece and nephew (puzzles and LEGO activity books), along with cards and gift wrap bags and tissue.
