I've been a fan of Katz' since I first moved to Austin in the late 80s, so when it klosed down I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to find a good Yankee Pot Roast sandwich again. And it's been true for 15 years. Luckily they are around H-Town and my last visit I was staying relatively klose to the Westheimer location. Gotta admit that it is a beautiful and spacious location with outdoor dining and a playscape for the kids. Inside is an open dining concept that still allows patrons to have private conversations. The staff is super friendly and attentive and even the manager comes by asking about the service and food. Speaking of... I ordered a cup of chili, a Reuben and my favorite, the Yankee pot roast. Of course, not all of it for me as I had a friend with me. Chili was spot-on Texas style and not too spicy. The Reuben was delicious and the right amount of portions with the corned beef, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. The rye bread was moist so the hard edges didn't tear up the upper part of my mouth. But the Yankee pot roast sandwich was heavenly. First bite brought me back 30 years ago when I first had it. So happy that the recipe is still the same where every bite brings comfort and satisfaction. I hope they eventually make it back to Austin. For the longest time I was looking at the billboard on Southwest Freeway by Hillcroft says "exit here to Katz". I always thought that Katz at Montrose area. Not here in SW Houston. Only because of my toastmasters friends showed up here and then ah... I was pleasantly surprised. Very cool restaurant. It's a perfect location for a 24-hour restaurant - Never Kloses. I came here early May after a long day of events in the Galleria area and I was starving. First thing came to my mind was get something at Katz. My friend ordered a passion fruit lemonade which came out tasting artificial and no lemonade flavor and a 2-sauce pasta, which he liked. I ordered Skinny Pastrami Sandwich, which they are famous for. My late husband's favorite. I remember when we tried it years ago at the other location. I don't have the same desire after trying it. I think I'll order something else next time. Parking is not bad after midnight. But for sure don't hit the rush hours as the bars closes or dinner or lunch rush. I came in at the right time. Yeah friendlier service wins me back. read more

There are Katz's all over Houston. The best one I have been to has been the one in the woodlands. Now why this one is very nice and clean, I wasn't impressed with the food. Granddaughter said her chicken Alfredo was cheaper and better at Jason's deli. My hubs Monte Christo looked like a flat grilled cheese. He said it was good though. The younger granddaughter had a cheese pizza that was tiny and a little cold. Her side dish of Mac and cheese was pasta with a slice of cheese melted on it. My Rueben was greasy and just not pleasant to eat. We also had a side of potato pancakes they were good but when asked for extra applesauce it was not received until we asked again. But at the end of my meal, I asked for the bill and a "box to go." She brought the little credit card machine with no box to go. I ordered a two sauce pasta. They were able to just do the marinara sauce. It comes with two triangles of garlic bread. The pasta was good. I could only eat half. $14.99 is a bit steep for a plain pasta with no protein though. We were looking for a new lunch place to try and remembered that we have not been to Katz before even though we have passed by it countless of times. We arrived around noon on a weekday and there were still ample parking. Upon entering we were quickly show to our table. Restaurant is modern rustic design. They have a patio if you prefer fresh air. We ordered the corned beef breakfast with pancakes and also came with 2 sunny side eggs. The pancakes were delicious and syrup makes it even better. The corned beef hash though was just ok. We also ordered the chicken fried chicken. It was crispy on the outside. They used chicken breast meat and was on the thicker and heavier side. The gravy was yummy and hit the spot. Katz's was a convenient option when I arrived in Houston late. It was one of the few places open really late, which I definitely appreciated after a long travel day. That said, the food was just okay. I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich, and while it wasn't bad, it didn't really stand out or wow me. Overall, it's a solid late-night option if you need something when most places are closed, but not somewhere I'd necessarily go out of my way to visit again. read more

I'm really irritated that I ordered a salad and was charged extra for ranch dressing. My salad had none on it, so I asked for it and then was charged 99 cents. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip as an appetizer and it was great. Our main meals were just ho hum. The service was lacking with drink refills too. Thanksgiving at Katz's was wonderful. The restaurant was lively and hopping with holiday energy, but still comfortable -- busy without feeling crowded. I ordered two regular Katz Coffees at $3.99 each and the Chicken Parmesan Pasta for $18.99. We also had the Bowl Matzo Ball Soup, $9.99 with the meal, which was perfectly comforting for Thanksgiving. The restaurant was clean, including the restrooms, which I always appreciate. Our waiter, Yip, was excellent -- attentive, friendly, and efficient. The manager also stopped by our table to check on us, which added a nice personal touch. Service was prompt from start to finish, and the overall experience felt warm, smooth, and well-run. My favorite thing about Katz was their pickles. For a pickle person these were almost perfect, crunchy and just the right dill taste. I would choose Katz 's over others just to get the pickles. However, the last couple of visits have been a GREAT disappointment. Something has changed and now the pickles are tough, hard to eat with an aftertaste. This may seem a silly matter when I like their food overall, but this is the thing that sets the apart for me. So I will not return anytime soon. read more

Brought my parents to try Katz's for the first time. From the outside and inside the decor is nice, clean and inviting. When we walked in the staff greeted us right away a say is down, very accommodating since we had a baby with us. Its nice and clean. Love that it's nice and chilly inside especially with this heat. Our server was very nice and attentive, never let us waiting for drinks. The food was great, love that the menu is available all day, great for everyone to choose if they want breakfast or lunch. I used to eat at Katz's in Austin years ago and was surprised to hear they have...a chain of them now? in Houston. We were in Houston and decided to have breakfast here. The first thing I noticed was the restaurant is really upscale diner looking. It's not giving Katz's cozy vibes, but maybe it's what they thought was right for this market? The menu really threw me off. It's a giant, Applebees-esque picture menu complete with little standing cards on the tables advertising some colorful lemonades or something. All the menu stuff was very, very chain. I had a scrambled egg (good), English muffin (very good), with whipped cream cheese (excellent). My husband had a two egg plate with bagel and latkes. The bagel was just ok. The latkes were flavorful, but were overly oily like the fryer wasn't hot enough and they seemed pre-formed, cookie cutter shape. Our server was ok. If you've never been to Katz's in Austin I think you'll like this one just fine. If you're expecting the Austin one, try not to. read more

I've seen Katz deli shown on the Food Network and Travel Channel, never thought that I would be able to try it unless I fly to New York or at least have a taste of the amazing pastrami. I'm from Austin recently moved to Houston and the food scene in Houston is incredible and Katz Deli an example of that. The best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. The bread is buttery and crispy. The pastrami is soft, flakey, rich, meaty, vinegary, tangy, layer after layer of meat. Then the sauerkraut bring it all together with the crunch and tame flavors of the cabbage, the richness of the meat needs the sauerkraut. Once you add that creamy may Russian house dressing, you get flavor bombs. I love how it comes with a whole pickle aside of additional pickled vegetables. For a sandwich $18, it is pricy. You can't forget the house chips, freshly cut, and fried beautifully seasoned crispy fresh chips. By the way, the old-fashioned for 12 bucks is a really good deal plus the bartender made it really well. read more

Barry, we've got to talk. In June of 2023 I rediscovered Katz's after being a loyal diner in Austin for years until it's closure. Clifford Antone used to buy me breakfast at 2 AM after visiting his club. I wrote a glowing review for your new Galleria establishment. Flash forward to my birthday weekend 2024. Let's get the parking lot thing out of the way. Has no affect on the review of the restaurant but it's a story. I've reluctantly finished my meal and went out to grab a smoke. A native Houstonian gets out of his Tahoe and approaches me. I'm wearing a shirt that's classic Austin garb with a little country and he tells me I've got a vibe that is fresh. We BS for a few minutes and talk H-Town breakfasts. He rejoins his party that now has a table inside. Meanwhile, I'm reseated and visiting while my son finishes his cheesecake. Tab paid and we're headed out and back to Austin. Apparently, that dude Chad has been asked to fetch something from the vehicle and we reunite in the parking lot now joined by my family (mom, son, GF). Handshake and man hug like we've known each other forever. Yes Chad, we will see each other again. GF say people are drawn to me; she exclaims who the "F" was that? Sorry to get off track Barry but you had to know my vibe. Now, onto the menu change. I know it happens but getting rid of something I hold so dear in my heart; perhaps defines what I think Katz's is about. And it's a simple fix. I know it's still there in all it's parts except one. We ordered the breakfast tacos, a burger with cheese only and fries, a chopped steak with mash potatoes and salad and a side of fries. We did not get the side of fries, the burger had everything on it, and the chopped steak had so much salt on it that it was not edible (throw away). I used to frequent Katz's Deli on Montrose years ago before reviews were a thing. I remember being super impressed with their large menu and atmosphere. My expectations weren't met as with the previous location. My family and I took my aunt to dinner for her birthday last night at the Galleria location. Upon entering to take our seat at the half circle booth, I was grossed out by the extremely sticky floor. I couldn't get off my feet fast enough. Not the best first impression. Our server was attentive. We ordered drinks and started on our journey through the extensive menu. It is a little overwhelming to pick from such a large selection. We were seated close to the bar with the Astros game playing. That was also a distraction, but a good one (Go Astros!). I love being able to have dinner and not miss the game. We finally made our decisions and ordered. We started with an appetizer of fried pickle spears to share. For my entree, I had the Texas brisket and turkey hero. The fried pickles were okay. I remembered them being a lot crunchier years ago. The breading was a little soggy after one bite. Our meals arrived in a timely manner. For a deli place with a focus on sandwiches, my hero was lacking. The brisket was so fine it was more like a paste. The turkey was dry and the barbecue sauce was a drizzle. I asked for a side of sauce to help, but the sauce itself arrived cold, so it didn't help the cause. My dad had the street tacos and said they were very good. In hind sight, I should have taken the server's suggestion. When asked her suggestions prior to ordering, she was very enthusiastic about the wings and the street tacos. My stepmom had the French dip. She said it was good. My aunt had a turkey deli sandwich. She didn't comment much on hers. The sandwiches come by themselves. Fries or another side are extra. We ordered steak fries to share. They were okay, but came to the table a little cold. All in all, it was a good evening celebrating my aunt. But please, guys, change the mop water and get that floor in better shape! I would like to go back and try their 24 hour breakfast menu. Part of the issue for me was not taking the server's suggestions. I think it deserves another try. In my previous experience with the other location, I was impressed with their breakfast. I would also like to eat on the patio when the weather is cooler. This place can definitely cater to a diverse group with the many options. From deli sandwiches, meatloaf, wings, salads, burgers, chicken fried steak, to sea bass. They were not busy for a Saturday night. I think their crowd is probably the late nighters. Upon reviewing the menu, I was blown away by all of the options. I had it in my head that they only had sandwiches lol. I was wrong. I was surprised to see country fried chicken on the menu. It looked amazing. (Everything did) I asked our server about it and he said it was a great choice. I decided to move forward. The country fried chicken is a boneless battered chicken breast served on a bed of mashed potatoes and smothered in cream gravy. YES, it is as delicious as it sounds!! Note: If you would like an additional side, it is sold separately. Ex: side of fries $4.99 My son decided to get the grilled Salmon Hero with a side of fries. So many options! For a place open 24/7 they really have a bit of everything. The chilaquiles had no sauce so to me they're not authentic but still enjoyed them, wings were decent, cheese crisps were good, but the dessert was bomb. Wanted a new adventure so tried this location on Christmas evening. Terrible choice. Server stretched too thin and place was not crowded. Asked specifically if signature sandwich was toasted and hot and server said yes. Food came, but had to ask for the originally ordered house made chips twice before they finally came. We both ordered 'skinny' size but didn't eat equivalent of one slice of bread each. Meat would have only filled a fold-over. Rye bread was tasteless and not toasted. Meat was cold and tasteless. Server finally checked by and when asked about food temp now replied that we ordered a cold sandwich. Well which is it??? Paid with credit and asked for a printed receipt. Today was our first time visiting Katz ( it used to be the River Oaks Plant House). We had a decent dining experience- only waited 10-15 mins for a table, but the staff were definitely scrambled all over the place (maybe short staffed). They serve breakfast all day so we had the waffle sandwiches with house fries. It was good but nothing to rave about. The house fries are really a small plate of chopped potatoes and my partner had a ton of onions in his. He ordered a jumbo sundae that came in a large glass, your typical vanilla sundae, and the PB&J cocktail. The drink was so strong and tasted like robutussin to me. If you're looking for a casual bite, then I'm sure this place will do.
