My journey actually started when I met Belinda at the Portsmouth store while purchasing a beautiful silver peridot bracelet and an anniversary band (unplanned purchased because it was exactly what I had in mind). We started chatting about engagement rings because I knew my son would soon be in the market. That conversation led us to meet Kerim at the Newburyport store. Kerim designed the perfect ring for my son to present to his now fiancé. They both returned for wedding bands. Kerim made a band to compliment her engagement ring and my son picked one of his unique creations for his band. Throughout the entire process, they felt they were in the best hands. When it came time to create my mother's ring, I knew exactly who I wanted to make it. Kerim listened carefully to my ideas, offered thoughtful advice about the stones I wanted to use, and together we came up with the perfect compromise. He even suggested making the ring one size smaller--but I didn't listen! As it turns out, he was absolutely right. Silly me! The finished ring is absolutely spectacular. I brought in a silver sterling earring that needed a new post. I was told that it would cost $25. I repeated the cost back to the woman at the counter: "$25, right?" "Yes, $25." I would NEVER have agreed to pay more than $25 for a simple post. I thought it seemed a little high for what amounted to dropping a minuscule blob of sterling onto the back of an earring. That's not even 10 minutes worth of work. I can buy a whole new pair of earrings for $25! When I picked it up I was told that it would be $35. I questioned that, told the man what I had been quoted, and the man said, "We don't do anything for under $35." You can draw your own conclusions from that, but I'll never go there again. read more

Erdem recently repaired a sentimental piece that belonged to my mom. I had lost a tiny diamond out of her wedding band and he did a fabulous job replacing and repairing it. His work is impeccable and I feel his prices are reasonable for the delicate work he has to do. I have purchased quite a few pieces in his store. She yanked anything out of my hand when i looked at it and she had to put it back in the cases. decent-looking jewelry but terrible, rude and snob-a-licious service! OK, after reading so many negative reviews, I felt it my duty so send some love to Kaya! My family and I have been shopping here for YEARS and have loved everything that we have ever purchased at this store. We've come to know the owner over the years, and my fiance and I actually purchased our engagement rings - and will be purchasing our wedding rings (we are two women who like bling, so these are pretty decent-sized purchases ;)) at Kaya. It became a holiday tradition for my dad and I (....and my fiance as she joined the family...and my sister-in-law as she joined in... :)) to head to Kaya every year together to shop for mom, and I always know that I will be rewarded with a gorgeous little something at the end. It's been a tradition that we all look forward to, and mom always loves her gifts (as do we). We are currently planning to have some custom silverwork done (wedding party gifts), and the owner is awesome to work with and great at what he does. Due to a friends urging, years later, I gave these guys another chance to repair my wedding ring. A WORLD of difference - likely due to a new family member taking over the customer relations and general management. They truly worked hard to make sure that I had a positive experience. I'm sure a negative past review might've played a part in that but regardless, they did great work, were kind, communicative and I'm now a big fan! It's a different energy and feel in there than it used to be. They were insistent that I return immediately if there was any issues or concern and it's evident that they will stand by the quality of their work and remedy anything that might be deemed less than satisfactory. I looked up Kaya on Yelp the other day and after seeing all the bad reviews was compelled to set the story straight. I am not an employee, first of all. I work in New Haven and grew up in Newburyport. My first experience with the people at Kaya was to purchase an engagement band for my now wife. I had a family diamond that I wanted to have set between two sapphires. The Jeweler was a breeze to work with. He went over to the sapphire case, found a set of stud earrings with two beautiful sapphires, and got to work right away. His price was actually much less than I expected, and the ring came out beautifully. My wife is complimented all the time by just about everyone that sees it, complete strangers in passing included. It's quite a work of art. Since then, I try to stop in to Kaya whenever we are in town. He always cleans my wife's rings for her quickly and for free while we shop around town, everyone in the shop is friendly and eager to help, they are honest about their products, willing to make suggestions about where to go if they don't have the right thing for you, it is a great great store run by friendly, talented people. He even sized a watch that was gifted to me, and was certainly not from the store, for free. These people aren't in it to make a fortune, they love what they do and who they do it for. This is not, however, the place to go for a cheap piece of jewelry. They do have a small selection of earrings and small jewelry, and there have been a couple times that my wife has found a great set of earrings for less than $50, but that is not why you go here. Go here for an exquisite gift for someone you love very much and for whom you'd like to buy something to cherish for the rest of his or her life. If they don't have what you want behind the counter, just ask them to make it. read more

I was looking in here last summer for a gift for my maid of honor. Out of curiosity, I looked at their wedding bands. What cheap craftsmanship. One ring featured a row of channel set J-I quality stones (if you're a stone enthusiast, you get the color rating of diamonds), except for the very last stone on the right. It was CLEARLY a cheap diamond, as it was yellowish and full of visible inclusions. The ring was still grossly overpriced, even when I pointed this out to the sales lady. The owner is a bit on the arrogant side, if I might say so. For cheap knock around jewelry, you could do worse. But if you want a nice piece for someone or for yourself, look around a bit more. read more

Erdem is our jeweler, we stopped in 12 years ago while engagement ring shopping because we saw so many wonderful pieces in the window. He designs many things himself, and is a nice and thoughtful person who really seems to love what he does. We have purchased a custom platinum wedding band, a platinum and diamond engagement ring, and a diamond and pink Safire wedding band from Kaya. All still look as beautiful as the day we purchased them (you need a good cleaner!). We have also purchased numerous earrings of semi precious stones, a beautiful Lapis necklace, and diamond earrings. You can count on high quality, and a decent price for that quality. My husband purchased my engagement ring from Kaya 7 years ago. It's like no other engagement ring I have ever seen and I LOVE it. A small diamond fell out and I somehow managed to hit it right at this spot and cause some serious damage. I took it to a local jeweler who refused to work on it as it was too extensive and advised me to return to the jewelry maker. I returned to Kaya the next time I was near and they quoted me $100 to repair the ring. Yay! As it turns out, when the jeweler attempted the repair, he too thought it was more extensive than they first thought. I'll admit, I was nervous. It took a week longer than they quoted because of this but they completed the repair (which as it was explained to me was more like creating a new ring) for the price originally quoted because he wanted to stand by his product. Great, very honest customer service! So rare these days! read more

Newburyport is a tourist town, and Kaya preys on tourists: impulse buys from vacationers, which makes returns inconvenient and rare. This is why they are still in business. I can't imagine anyone local would be so stupid to buy something there more than once ( and after that one mistake, believe me, you never go back ). In one visit, I bought 2 rings from the owner. He had some unqualified distant cousin re-size it, and half the ring disappeared! The beautiful, sturdy setting was reduced to a thin piece of foil. I was beside myself with greif, but was very patient with them. I had to tell the owner how to fix it, for either he sincerely didn't know, or he was playing stupid. The entire shank had to be replaced. I was very nice about it, and he seemed very agreeable. It took me 2 months to get it back, and they damaged the stone... They ruined the sapphire by chopping off the culet ( the little pointy peak at the bottom of the stone ), so now you can see right through it. It does not hold the light like it did when I bought it. The ring was very dirty ( they left corrosive in it, so the inside was turning black!!! ) so I had to give it back again to have it cleaned. To this day I still have to clean it religiously, as it is corroding away, but I honestly don't care anymore... Everytime I wear it, I feel regret and sadness. I've never gotten a compliment on it, and no one believes it is a real sapphire. I took the other ring to someone in the jeweler's building in Boston to have the stones reset to another setting. Kaya's setting was snagging all my clothes and ripping up my face if I happend to run my hand across it to move my hair or scratch an itch. The jeweler in Boston wouldn't bother with it, which leads me to believe the stones are worthless. He did not say much but what he did say was "I wouldn't even give that ring away..." Oh how depressing, how I got had! Finally, the owner did not even know what GIA stood for. Helloooo! Gemological Institute of America. The fool has no shame. read more

I honestly do not understand the negative comments included here -In my opinion Kaya is one of the most creative jewelry stores in the area - the quality of their silver jewelry is gorgeous and there is true artistry in their designs - these are not your run-of-the mill pieces. Their gem stones are lovely; both the quality/colors and placement in the interesting settings, particularly the rings. I live in the neighborhood and go in fairly regularly and have never had an unpleasant experience with the people who work there - and if the owner is the youngish man with the long hair - I find him to be a warm and very accommodating person.
