Absolutely avoid this business. I cannot caution you strongly enough. Absolute incompetence verging on malpractice. They're just there to push metal and rocks with no genuine concern for the customer. My wife went to Royal Jewelers with her engagement ring and the ring marking the birth of our daughter. She's had them for 27 and 24 years, and she left with both rings destroyed and needing to be rebuilt from scratch. The rings were joined together and she wore them often, but this past time she wasn't able to easily remove them. She wanted them resized and expected they would remove them by cutting them, easing them off and then add a small section to make them larger. Instead, after they were cut, their senior "expert jeweler" went after them with two pairs of pliers like he was using the "Jaws of Life" and tore open a 1/2-inch gap in the ring putting sharp bends and scratches all around the ring, including hard bends in the settings and basically destroying the entire ring set. Now she's home in tears with her ring, absolutely ruined by this yahoo, and needing it to be rebuilt from scratch. To make their failure even more painful for us, the ring was originally made by a good friend of ours who has since passed away. He was an actual professional jeweler that I'm certain could have easily have managed this task. When I called to speak with this jeweler, I got a complete song and dance of "Well I had to be careful not to cut her finger with the sharp edges" and "I told her some of the set stones may come a little loose". Seriously? He should have told her "I'm going to open up your ring like a pinata and you will never wear it again." And the nonchalant attitude of not my problem "well these things can happen" I got from him on the phone was beyond the pale. He could have easily slipped a thin strip of stainless steel under the cut to protect her and eased the ring off. Or, he could have cut the ring on both the left and right side so it would come off in two pieces. This is a simple job that just needs some care and can be done in many ways. Royal could have done better with bolt cutters! So, I would say to any potential customer, Royal Jewelers may be suitable for retailing pre-manufactured items or working on costume jewelry, but for anything with sentimental or monetary value just stay away. And to Royal Jewelers, I just say this, if you cannot do a job right, then just say so and don't take the job. read more

I'm sure these people are GREAT to deal with if you're looking to make a big-ticket purchase and don't do your homework in terms of comparison shopping. But their prices are VERY inflated, as with most businesses in Andover. My brother lives in DC and collects watches, and he says Royal's prices are way too high. And definitely forget about bringing them any repair jobs, like watch batteries. They'll either ignore you, charge you a fortune, or tell you that your 6-month-old, $20 Target watch "needs to have the movement cleaned," which will cost more than you paid for the watch! I once asked them for a quote to re-size a ring, and their quote was double what Maine Gold & Silver told me -- and Maine G&S did a great job. read more

Attentive, patient, and knowledgeable, I was even more impressed that he took the time to help me on his day off ( since the associates are not commission based) to help me find/purchase a Grand Seiko. Royal Jewelers is the only authorized dealer of Grand Seiko watches( my personal favorite timepiece) in MA. I have had multiple experiences both online and in person at authorized dealers of Grand Seiko in NYC, Texas and Florida but never had the as thorough enjoyable of an experience as I had with Dan at Royal Jewelers. I would highly recommend him to anyone. I also had a brief opportunity to speak with one of the owners of the shop. He was friendly and pleasant to speak with. I was impressed with the care he has for his business. It is rare these days to find people who truly love what they do and at Royal Jewelers, you could tell that they care about the customer and the services they provide. Then they wanted me to take the diamond out, & put it in a different setting..thereby giving me an estimate of $600-$700...I said I'll think about it. When I contacted AP for help they said i could ship the watch to a Florida and they would repair and ship back to me. No thanks! I emailed Bill at Royal and he said they could swap the bands no problem, for a small fee. Well I finally had a chance to get down there and get it done and the watchmaker on site swapped my band in five minutes, shook my hand and said thank you, and wouldn't take any money for it. My son recently got married. I wanted to get my wife a piece of jewelry to mark the occasion. I decided on a ring from the David Yurman collection. I did some research and found that Royal jewelers is the only dealer in the area the carried Yurman. I went in and they had the ring I wanted but not in the size I needed. They said they could order the ring but that wouldnt work for me as I was leaving the next morning for Florida (destination wedding). They called over their jeweler and he said he could size the ring for me. It was 1:00pm they told me to come back at 5:00 and they would have the ring for me. I returned at 5:00 and the ring was ready. I brought it to my sons wedding and presented it to my wife who loved it. I wanted to get engaged but did not want to go ring shopping because I'm the guy that needs to do a ton of research to make sure I'm not getting scammed because I read and heard several stories that raised my awareness. One thing I need to mention that most of their timepieces are wrapped with plastic protection which is a PLUS as I hate display models with careless hairlines. i was assessing an online purchased diamond for setting and possible return and came to them for possible alternatives. their in-house expert didn't understand how GIA grades diamond colors, and claimed that a diamond with strong fluorescence impacts GIA grading (it doesn't). they are also severely overpriced, trying to sell me diamonds with EGL instead GIA certificates, when EGL diamonds are held to a much lower clarity/color standard in general. I had a 1.21ct/GIA triple excellent (heart and arrow verified by another jeweler)/E/VVS2/Strong fluorescence, and they tried to sell me EGL triple excellent/G/SI2/None of similar size for $500 less. unreal. scammy and overpriced, I would not recommend. read more
