One of the more authentic delicious Turkish places in all of the DMV area! A true gem. You can't go wrong with any food item. I typically always take the lentil soup as a starter and we share appetizers such as hommos, cheese/meat cigars, and a main meal of either Adana Acili or Acili Kofte (both delicious meat dishes). Went there for lunch and got the special ($17.95). I rec'd four small pieces of lamb, two thin slices of eggplant and huge portion of rice. I asked the waiter why the lamb pieces were so small. This is what he said the chef told him "the lamb shrinks when it is cooked." What? I know of Greek restaurants that serve better tasting food (and lamb), in larger portions and less expensive than the Kazan Restaurant. Check out Opa in Ashburn. There is nothing special about this place. I don't know how they have remained in McLean for 35 years. read more

Food was great & fresh! For started got the meza mixed platter. Got the mixed grill, county chicken, and the house specialty Donor kebab. Got a complementary dessert platter when the house found out we where celebrating! A great spot for a date night, office dinner, special occasion, or just a relaxed dinner spot. Update. I have now been a total of 3 times. The food overall is very good, almost excellent, and the dessert gets a good rating. I've had dessert in Istanbul Turkey so I'm comparing it to overseas , which i realize is hard to match. I went back to KAZAN last night, and had the most AMAZING sword fish ever!!! I already loved the meze sampler and the doner kebab as I mentioned in my earlier post, but oh my gosh the fish was so good too :))) very healthy and light... LOVED IT !! I'm going DEFINITELY GOING BACK again tomorrow!! :P --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was my first time at KAZAN, and we went there with a couple of coworkers after work for dinner. It has a very cozy environment, not-too-dark, not-too-light, and it gave us just the right amount of balance to talk about work stuff, and eat delicious Turkish food at the same time. We started off with the "meze sampler", and it was a very good choice, since we could try different types of mezes. Afterwards I had the "doner kebab", which I thought was absolutely wonderful!!! My other colleague had the sword fish, which he commented on as "being the best sword fish he ever had". We also had some pistachio baklava and some turkish coffee to top things off. The service was great and the waiter was very friendly.The place was packed when we were there, they must be doing something right, since they have been doing business over 30 years. I am a frequent guest at McLean's Chain Bridge Corner but only now have stopped by at Kazan. I am actually quite partial to kebob (I tasted and love many different kinds, from Mediterranean to Kavkaz Region Georgian to East European to south American) and was looking forward to having a Turkish variant. The interior is OK, rather simple, with an open porch section for those who like to sit outside, but the staff was very polite and they make you feel comfortable. I came with a friend and actually tried several dishes. Doner Kebab and Adana Kebab each was delicious. I loved the mix of different meats with a mixture of spice and yogurt. A bit pricey but the food is good. It works fine if you are on the go, although I prefer more upscale places for a weekend dinner. A fine Turkish cuisine on the go in McLean. read more

Our first Turkish meal, and it was fantastic! We were in a hurry so we got our meal to go. We had the doner kebab special, baba ghanoush, and dolma on the side. The dolma were a tiny bit disappointing, since it was only four -- they were good, but we would have liked more. The baba ghanoush was the best I've ever had, better than any I've had from Greek or Lebanese restaurants. And the doner kebab was incredibly flavorful, and a really big portion -- enough for two, actually. Highly recommended. We'll be coming back for sure. read more

The fabulous Jimena is back from London, and as she was free for lunch, I quickly hopped on Yelp to see what was near us (OK, me, because I'm directionally challenged) and saw the reviews for Kazan. Turkish? In a stripmall? In McLean! With a 4 star rating on Yelp? My eyes must deceive me! As it was Wednesday, and per the other Yelp reviews, I ordered the Doner Kebab, while Jimena ordered her Turkish favorite, Adana Acili. A basket of hot fresh pita came out (with butter - which I thought was a little odd), and as I'm a sucker for all bread-type products, I ended up eating way too much of the pita. My Doner Kebab came out - and I will admit, I was a little surprised. When I see "kebab" on a menu, I expect a long skewer of meat instead of a mound of shaved meat, gyro style. I suppose I should have read those other Yelp reviews more closely! Moist and flavorful, this "kebab" was gyro-like in flavor, but with much more texture and tenderness! Definitely a fan! However, the Adana Acili...! A long skewer of ground lamb, it was spicy, rich, oily without greasy...all in all, just a long skewer of tastiness! Succulent and flavorful, I have to say, that given a choice between the Doner or the Adana - I will definitely be ordering the Adana Acili next time! Wow! There were two things that was off-putting for me. The first, was the rice; it had the flavor and texture of Uncle Ben's, instead of the fluffy tastiness of basmati rice. It seems odd that something as plain as rice could have an impact on a meal, but it really did. The "Uncle Ben-ness" of the rice threw off the meal for me, and I wondered if it was just me, or if it really was odd rice. Thankfully Jimena backed me up on this opinion, so I'm glad I'm not crazy for thinking it. The second turn off, for me, were the prices. Although this was lunch, most of the dishes were in the $15 range. A little pricy for a weekday work lunch, however, Kazan is also a little more upscale then what I was prepared for, yet it wasn't as nice as the Capitol Grille, for instance, where I could picture paying $15 for lunch. The service was good. I had gotten to the restaurant 10 minutes before Jimena, and once I let the server know that I was waiting on someone, they poured me water, then kindly left me alone until she arrived. Once she showed up, they gave us time and space to greet, hug, and chat a bit, before taking our orders. Perfection! Attentive without ever being intrusive, the service was great! All in all, I would definitely come back. Perhaps not for lunch, as the price is a little prohibitive (I like eating cheap lunches and expensive dinners), however, this would be a nice place to have dinner if I'm in the area. read more

To start with, it is overpriced. Regular dinner is going to cost about $50 per person. I don't care about it as long as they serve what they say they are serving. They are messing with Turkish food by experiencing different things and it is not working! They have the worst Arnavut Cigeri that i have ever had in my life besides all they should definitely remove that from the menu. Other things worth to note. 1) that tea is not Turkish tea, it is just a earl greyish tea that i have no interest 2) Sigara Boregi with ground beef (seriously? Give it a different name) 3) iskender with garlic yogurt(?) 4) kunefe with all weird ingredients inside that have nothing to do with Turkish palate. Came here for lunch on a lovely Friday afternoon, so we sat out on the patio - which was a great decision since there was a large group behind the divider inside the restaurant. Ordinarily I wouldn't mind being seated near a group, but they were apparently celebrating some business achievement because they kept clapping off and on--that gets old after awhile. Most of the patrons are local residents and business/government types; you'll see an array of casual to upscale dressed customers, and vaguely familiar people you may have seen on CNN for doing something famous or infamous. Our server was reserved but friendly enough, being neither obsequious nor dismissive. My lunch companion and I ordered drinks; I of course had to have a Kir Royale, which definitely put the Kir in the royal. To start, we shared the single serving mezze platter (sampler), which was very generously portioned, with good variety and flavor. The yogurt dip in particular was fresh and minty, and I normally dislike tasting mint in anything but gum. For our entrees, he ordered the "Izgara Shish Kofte," which is chargrilled spiced chopped lamb served with rice pilaf and vegetables, while I opted for their "famous Doner Kebab," a concoction of lamb and veal that is vertically chargrilled (think gyro) and served only on certain days and evenings. Both were excellent and generously sized. His grilled lamb in particular was zesty and artfully spiced, while the pilaf was surprising light and flavorful. My Doner Kebab was equally yummy; the meat was juicy and rich, the yogurt sauce wasn't heavy and the topping of fresh tomatoes was a perfect accent. Our entrees each came with a salad and hot pita bread basket. The lunch prices were not what I would call "moderate" -- I thought we might've been given the dinner menu by mistake but no, it really does average about $20-25 per person at lunch without drinks. But the portions and presentation are pretty massive. Overall, the food was fantastic, and I might've given Kazan a 4-star rating, but our server basically went AWOL after our appetizers came out, so he missed out on the chance to pad the tab with a couple glasses of wine. This detracted from the overall experience. He did return to clear the table and present the check, before disappearing again for a good 15 minutes more. Luckily for him, we were forgiving and too involved in good conversation for us to make a complaint (not really my style, anyway). This was my first visit, so I plan to return a couple more times and will update accordingly. read more

We've been going to Kazan since 2009. This is perhaps one of our favorite restaurants. I always get the doner kebab with the meat sigara as a starter while my wife prefers the cheese sigara and either has shrimp or salmon. Sometimes she will have the kebab. Service is always superb. Great food plus great service = staying in business for 37 years. Just finished a fabulous dinner with my family and close friends who are from Turkey. Kazan is excellent Turkish food. I would like to correct some earlier reviews. Donner Kabob is not like Gyros. It is like Souvlaki Donner Kabob is the meat pressed together in thin slices and put on s skewer and cooked vertically so that the juices run down. It can be served similarly to a gyro which is the sandwich. Souvlaki is also a pressed together slices of meat on a sword cooked vertically and in Greek when served in a sandwich like a soft taco it is called gyro. Kabob only means it was cooked on a skewer not that it comes in chunks. I was at Kazan with two friends who lived in Turkey for years. They loved their dinners. They had a nice conversation with one of the Turkish waiters who told them where the chef was from and it was a section of Turkey that is considered the best place for all Turkish chefs. One really should not expect Turkish food to taste exactly like Greek nor exactly like Lebanese, nor exactly like Persian. Though all is Mediterranean and has similarities it is not the same any more than chicken is exactly the same in all Latin countries though there are similarities. Just as there is a big difference between true Mexican food and Tex mex food there are differences between all the Mediterranean foods so one should not expect them to be the same. When many Turks eat their Donner Kabob they mix the meat with the yogurt which cuts the heavy seasoning. But if the heavy seasoning was not as it is, the yogurt would over power and one could not taste the meat. It helps if you like to have olive oil with your bread to ask and it will be served with oil instead of butter. These wonderful people have been serving in America so long they realize all too often Americans tend to know more about butter than olive oil so being accommodating, they will searve what you want or what they believe you want. However, Americans who know good olive oil and how to eat it with the breaqd, ask and you will receive. In Turkey lamb is almost always cooked well done. Donner Kabob will always be well done. However if you like lamb pink, you should order the lamb steak as they can fix that any way you like, it is never served dry, it comes with yogurt and rice pilaf. Rice pilaf is also not cooked the same as rice in other restaurants that are not Turkish so expect it to be more traditional to Turkey. Preparation is everything! They also have excellent Turkish style desserts. Very yummy. read more

We stopped in here for dinner the other night. The restaurant is actually quite nice inside with fine decor and extra silverware that seems out of touch considering the store front. I can't say I was under dressed as most folks were in similar casual mindsets. Regardless, we were seated and proceeded to order. We started with the Kazan Meze Special (for two). This consisted of hummus, borek, dolma, sucok, feta cheese, olives, cerkes tavuk, and special ezme. The hummus was ok. The cerkes tavuk was essentially a cold chicken salad with a tasteless dressing: no nuts, no sweetness. The borek was a pastry filled with cheese: hot and delicious. Not particulary sure what the ezme was on the plate, but by process of elimination it could have been these white cream cheese like substance with dill. Not good but not bad either. What stole the show is the items that were in the least quantity: feta (two small pieces), dolmas (two small), olives (two small with pits), and sucok (two small scraps of deliciousness). There were also tomatoes on the plate but they were clearly refrigerated, looking pink and mushy. A small house salad followed the appetizer. Nothing special here. For the entree, I ordered Lamb Shish Kofte. The meat was not overcooked but it was generally flavorless. The pilaf was good and the vegetables were actually singular, being some sort of green bean. My companion ordered the Bolu Pilic Yoghurtlu which was better. The pita contrasted the chicken and yogurt sauce quite well, adding a much needed depth to the dish. I don't see coming back here in the near future. The dinner was fairly expensive ($75) with tip and a glass of white wine. The food appeared to be a touch more American than Turkish. read more

You will leave stuffed with the best food of its kind you have EVER HAD! I've been going to Kazan since it was a windowless cavern half the size of its current glory. It has evolved into the best eatery in 'downtown' McLean and a welcome oasis from the steak and cigar bars and trendy joints whose owners really wished they had forked over the rent for a space in Dupont Circle. Today Kazan is a white tablecloth corner location with floor-to-ceiling windows for an upscale feel without any pretense or attitude. The owner is very down-to-earth and friendly and Isa, the lead server, knows the menu inside and out and remembers my drink and food preferences each time I go in. Amazing memory considering I only dine here twice a year since moving cross-country. The doner kabob is the signature dish and is so good they only have it two nights a week! It's worth making reservations for Wednesday or Saturday so you can have it (I usually have it with the pita and yogurt). Lamb cannot get more delicious than how they prepare it here. The meza appetizer platter is also outstanding and includes hummus, yogurt dip, meat cigars, dolma, sausages... the 'for two' app will feed three hungry people easily. The only real way to round out the night is with a semi-sweet Turkish coffee, a raki and the BAKLAVA, which comes with a topping so transcendent that it cannot be described as icing or whipped cream. It's something like out of a dream... I'm not an authority, but I have had baklava all over the country (including a place called baklava city in Los Angeles) and not eaten anything that compared. read more

Despite being located in a shopping center, Kazan is a very nice, established restaurant, perhaps for the older crowd. We arrived on a Saturday evening with a party of 5 and were promptly seated. Calamari was ordered as an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly served with a nice remoloude. My bf, his dad and brother all ordered the same dish: Doner kabob. I guess this is the signature dish here, a mix of veal and lamb served in a nice yogurt and spice sauce with pitas. I have to admit, it was extremely flavorful but I will not eat veal. I opted for the swordfish kabobs which were juicy and well cooked. Nothing overwhelming but very tasty. Our food took awhile to come out and drinks were not always filled, but overall this is a solid place for a nice dinner out in Vienna. read more

The service at this establishment is a thing of beauty. I haven't encountered a server that's the perfect combination of attentiveness without pushiness in a very long time. The servers are excellent about getting you situated right away and then coming back only when it seems that you need them. And they have a little sense of humor too. The food is tasty as well. I ended up having some sort of chicken/pita/yogurt/tomato thing that was absolutely delicious. The price of the entre included a salad that had this saffron dressing on it which was fabulous and a basket of warm pita bread. I also had a taste of boyfriend's grilled veggies which came out skewered over a bed of white rice. The grill in the back must be well seasoned as they'd done very little to the vegetables and yet they were totally awesome. The prices are rather high, especially for a joint in a strip mall but you're paying for the actual food and not the atmosphere; this is something that happens far too little in the DC area. All in all, I'd say check this place out. Just be prepared for a little initial sticker shock as an appetizer before you eat yourself into a coma in which you forget how much you're paying. read more

I am still in search of an excellent Turkish restaurant with good prices, still looking and in the lookout checked out Kazan Saturday Night. The place looks cozy when you enter, The lady that welcomed us was friendly, the place was not busy when we walked in. In fact there were a LOT of waiters standing around which kinda made my wife feel a little uncomfortable. Our waiter told us the specials and I ended up ordering the Doner Kebap which I was really looking forward to it. Haven't found the right one yet aside from NYC. Wife had the chicken. We did not order starters and selected a bottle of excellent Turkish red wine. The waiter did not seem pleased with our order, kept asking us -are we sure of not wanting starters, yes we are sure! he for some reason was not happy about it, he was very nice but we kinda felt awkward from this point on. Iskender was average-I cant imagine being stuck in traffic and starving and dreaming about it:) the yogurt under the meat had left some water and the meat was a bit soggy, so maybe a drier yogurt hence less soggy lamb. Chicken was also Ok on a bed of rice, nothing to day dream about. Here is a list of the awkward moments:- while eating because the restaurant was not that full, I constantly felt that the waiters were staring at us, not pleased with our order-and we had not even finished eating and our waiter would come and ask: are you finished, really strange-what is the point of rushing us? its not as if we were the last table and he would go home after that, it was only 8.10 pm on a Saturday night?!!!! This place is not cheap. While the service is very good, it is rushed and we felt as if the more we would order, the nicer they would be-Once our bill came after our waiter stood behind us to take it ( very rude) we left. But overall the people that frequent this restaurant are not really snazzy late diners or cool pool people that take time to mingle in a Saturday night kinda way. They are here to eat and leave. I went here with my sister and friend last week while in DC. The atmosphere and service were good. However, I was not impressed with the food. The hummus was probably the best thing I tasted there. I ordered the shrimp and steak. The shrimp was overcooked. The steak was ok but it did not have the Middle Eastern flavor I was expecting at a Turkish restaurant. The rice tasked like Uncle Ben's. Finding a good sit down Turkish restaurant isn't easy - especially in the suburbs. Kazan's pulls off a Turkish decor with style, the simple and elegant grace with which it is decorated lends a casual and comforting air that invites the diner to sit down, relax and chat with their friends and family. Often when you arrive, you will find big parties in the second room of the restaurant, celebrating birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Tuesdays, whatever they choose to celebrate that day. Unless you arrive 7pm on a Friday without a reservation, you are seated promptly. If you do have to wait, the bartender is more than happy to pour you a drink and talk with you until you have a table. Once seated, a smiling and cheerful waiter comes over to immediately take the drink order and describe the specials. Wednesdays and Saturdays you will always hear about the Doner Kabob. On any other day, you might be told how succulent and perfectly cooked the calamari are, or how moist the perfectly grilled swordfish kabob is that day. Whatever you choose, rest assured it will be delicious. My regular order consists of the ever-so-delicious calamari. Then the small salad with their perfect dressing. I have never had a honey mustard-style dressing that I liked, but I love this one. Then the salmon. I can't figure out how to replicate this salmon at home, so I continue to come to Kazans to sample and tweak my own recipe. Good for Kazans, bad for me. The seasoning is delicate, and compliments the salmon. It never overpowers, but brings out subtle flavors. The juice from the salmon soaks into the rice and veggies and rounds out a perfect main course. Kazan's has been owned by the Uzan family for 20+ years, and the mindset of a family owned business shines through. No matter the day or time, the food quality is consistent and will not disappoint. read more

Dissapointed with this restaurant. We visited on a Wednesday evening around 6pm, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy maybe around a quarter filled. We were taken around the back, our male waiter was also serving 3 other larger tables and was rushed off his feet, so service was poor, at times we felt ignored, and waited a long while to get his attention. Our waiter suggested bolu pilic yougurtlu, when I asked him which chicken dish to choose, this dish was awful and definitely not to my liking, it was very weird tasting, definitely did not like the soggy pita mixed with yogurt at the middle of my plate, I ended up eating only the chicken pieces. My husbands lamb shank was slightly better tasting. It was our first and definitely our last visit to this restaurant, neither the food nor service lived up to expectations. read more

Kazan is a McLean Turkish institution; lamp chops are the best in town. Service is excellent especially when the head server Ihan is on the floor. Owner is a good man and he is the Resturant head chef. Food is great but Kazan needs to do one thing, get into the 20 century not to say the 21 century and get their billing software updated; when the bill arrives at Kazan you need a translator from the staff to explain the handwritten charges. The only thing visible on a Kazan Bill is the total price at the end which is usually high but correctly high once the items charged are properly translated. read more

Why aren't Turkish restaurants Turkish? I went to Kazan's many years ago, Before their remodel my favorite thing was the warmth. It looks as if the original owner is no longer their and his American children are just running a business. When I said Merhaba, Hello, they said something like , Oh ya, right. Our waiter was from India. They have appetizers, not Mezze. They were ok. One of my favorite things in Turley is the Coban Salatasi and I want to give them the recipe; Çoban Salatası or Choban salad (Turkish for "Shepherd's Salad") is a Turkish salad consisting of finely chopped tomatoes (preferably peeled), cucumbers, long green peppers, onion, and flat-leaf parsley. The dressing consists of lemon juice, olive oil, and salt.[1] Theirs was good but not Turkish. In the 20 years I have been going to Turkey I have never had red wine vinegar on my Coban. Not a good place for vegans or vegetarians. They do offer a small vegetarian menu, but nothing on it was very interesting. I personally won't go there again for the fallowing reason. I ordered a vegetable plate and had asked my waiter 3 times to make sure there was no dairy, cheese, butter, or any animal products on the dish. When my dish came out it was swimming in butter and when I asked my waiter if there was butter on it he said no. So I asked a different waiter to ask the cook, sure enough the other waiter came back and said they did put butter on the dish, and that is when I got up and left. read more

This place IS McLean, it's been here since I was a kid. The food is always good. Nice place. Nice people.
