This small mom and pop shop is my favorite kind of sushi place! Ordered the Kazaku Special that came with 20 pieces chefs choice sashimi plus two rolls- all for $50. Our sashimi pieces were thick and tastes pretty fresh for Tucson. We ordered the crunchy roll and dragon roll. Enjoyed the dragon, but not sure if we'd get the crunchy again- a little tooooooo breaded for us. Overall we felt the special was a great deal for non happy hour pricing. Kazoku sat in my bookmarks for a year. An entire year. Goodness. I wish I had visited much earlier because while it was worth the wait, there was no need to wait this long. First order of business: The restaurant has a tiny parking lot out front (though there is more parking around the shop) and a relatively small dining room. It doesn't feel crammed inside, though, but I imagine it must get insane during rish hour. I appreciate that range of offerings. In addition to Japanese dishes, Kazoku offers Korean noodle dishes, rice plates and an assortment of soups and salads. Yes, you can get teriyaki, bulgogi, tekka don, udon noodles, yakisoba or tempura. Lots of options here, and plenty of lunch specials. I enjoy the ambiance. No top 40 music blaring through the speakers -- thank you! You won't find AYCE on the menu, and it seems that disgustingly massive rolls slathered in mayonnaise and cream cheese do not appear to fare well here. Also, the decor is calming and non descript, though I do love the enormous painting on the west wall. I went straight for the sushi. The lunch offering -- I chose the chirashi -- comes with a lovely miso soup, which is so smooth and fresh. No disgusting, chalky residue, which you too often find at sushi joints in Tucson. The miso soup was soothing, warm, delicious; it had hearty and delicious chunks of seaweed, too. The edamame was extremely fresh, and not at all salty. In fact, it had a slightly sweet taste -- not sugary sweet. Just naturally so. Everything was delicious. The freshness was the best I've experienced in Tucson. The mackerel held a gentle flavor. The eel was a bit sweet, but carried a fine texture. The flying fish roe was slightly crunchy -- ideal. The flavor notes on the cucumber salad were ideal -- perfect balance of salty sweetness; a welcome light and bright flavor. Also, the rice had been clearly prepared with the right amount of vinegar. This is hard to come by in Tucson! I was so pleased! Interestingly, while the wasabi was fresh and strong, it was not grated, which is something one might expect of Kazoku. I'll be back, though. And I cannot wait. read more

I was really torn between rating this place 2 stars or 3. It felt squarely 2.5. Service was around 3.25, food around 2.25. We didn't have any sushi so consider this a non-sushi review. The tempura was fair at best. It was oily. The rice was OK, the miso was pretty good, the salad was OK. The most interesting aspects of the dinner were: 1. My wonderful wife's order floating over to our table in some sort of Junk (a type of boat). We were pretty much expecting our food to arrive on, oh I don't know, maybe plates? It looked like some bizarre sort of adult happy meal. 2. I was trying to snap a picture of the Junk that was tethered to our table when I dropped my blackberry. It rolled along it's edge and over the side of a dish to land with a nice "sploot" in a some sort of teriyaki dipping sauce. I snatched it out, took the back off and dried it immediately. No harm done. But my dog won't stop sniffing at it now as if he is trying to understand why something that is clearly not food smells so good. Bottom line? I'm betting there are better Japanese places in Tucson...I will remind you that we did not try the sushi so it may be much better. The Sushi Chef was very nice. read more

We have been here twice now and I would give this place a solid 4-5 stars (why can't we do decimals ) This place has a huge selection of food, so whether you are craving sushi, udon, noodles, etc, this place has it. I've never gotten anything but sushi here though All of the rolls are quality, large portions, and tasty! They have a ton of speciality rolls that are good (crunch, mt halla) and then your normal cut rolls (spicy tuna or crab) We always like to get a seaweed salad and beer to start. They give you complimentary miso which I always enjoy. The service is good and speedy. Every time we have been here it's been popular but never too busy. Decided to try a new sushi place, as the place I usually go to is not open for dine-in due to the pandemic. We called to make sure they were open, then headed over. The restaurant was clean, and their menu was extensive. Not only do they offer sushi, but they have a number of hot Japanese and Korean dishes as well. We were served complimentary miso soup, which was amazing! I love miso and get it at every Japanese restaurant I go to. Some restaurants don't put much effort into their miso, or they water it down a lot. Not here. Seaweed salad is also a staple of mine and theirs is great! Their seaweed salad comes on a bed of cucumber salad and both are delicious. We got our food pretty quickly, and everything was fresh and delicious. The spicy rolls were my favorite as they have a great kick. We also ordered the "Y" roll, which was a sweet potato, tamago, and cucumber roll. It's not something I would typically order, but it ended up being my favorite roll of the meal. This place was great, and I definitely recommend it. My only gripe was that their parking lot is tiny, so when it's busy it'll be hard to find a parking spot. read more

SPECIAL ROLLS are delicious although the sushi itself is not that good.. so i'd stick to the special rolls which means the fish may not be the freshest but i guess it's AZ .. we're not coastal special rolls are CHEAP compared to the prices i'm accustomed to in NYC but apparently Kazoku is expensive compared to other places in Tucson unique thing about their rolls is they put white oniosn in their rolls.. never had that before --complimentary miso soup for each person & edamame to share: miso soup was enjoyable, not super salty ---passion roll: yummy! ---sunset roll: i'm not one to order a smoked salmon roll but this one was tasty ---kamikaze: if you want a fried & crispy roll go for this one ---complimentary ice cream for each person: nothing special w/ an artificial tastebut its free so who can complain?! They have good lunch/dinner combo deals with great selections and modest pricing :) My fiancé and I came in during lunch and they had lots of openings. We were greeted and seated right away. Although the lunch combos looked great, we both selected from their dinner combos. I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi dinner combination and he got the Chicken Teriyaki combination which came with sushi and a side salad. Both combos came with miso soup! We shared everything and it was all very fresh and tasted good. Great fish to rice ratio! The restaurant is clean and well laid out pandemic-wise. There's also parking right in front. I'm not sure why we waited so long to try out this place. We finally went with our 3months old baby! The ambiance is pretty nice, typical sushi set up with a small sushi bar and some tables. We ordered a few things which I can't exactly remember now since I did not write my review right away. Overall, the service is really nice, good food and friendly place. The only downfall is, they're not babies friendly since there's no changing table. Just pray that your babies or kids don't need to be changed. They do have room in the big bathroom and can easily be adapted, but that's up to the owner. We'd definitely return again for the delicious food! read more

Came here on a Friday after work with some friends. It was a packed house, which is always a good sign. The only issue with that is the tiny parking lot with only 4-5 spots outside, so we ended up parking in the lot next door. The rumors are true regarding complimentary miso soup, edamame, and red bean(?) ice cream! A very nice touch. I ordered a futomaki roll and salmon nigiri. I was hoping the eel would stand out in the roll, but it's kind of hidden within the other fillings. I was very impressed with the large slices of very fresh salmon, though. The rice was just sticky enough to hold everything together. The service was very friendly and prompt despite the large crowd. My only issue (besides parking) is the lack of happy hour. Sushi and beer/sake go hand-in-hand, in my book. I'll be back, for sure. But give me, say, a buck or two off a beer and some deals on sushi/apps and I'll likely order more food/walk away extra happy. read more

Back on the search for a good sushi place in Tucson. This isn't it. I ordered a Passion roll & a Giant roll. Neither was anything special. The Giant I ordered without cream cheese. So glad we found this place. Great menu selection and I LOVE that they serve iced green tea (free refills!). A wonderful variety of sushi and Japanese food. We chose a crunch roll for my 4 year old, and they cut it smaller for her to eat, which was so nice. I chose the shrimp tempura, which comes with miso soup and a salad and a side of steamed rice. They don't substitute the rice for fried rice. The miso has great flavor! I didn't try the salad. The tempura was delightful, and the portion size for price was great - also not too much. We started with some edamame, which was cold, but it worked out for my daughter to eat it as she loves edamame. The staff was so efficient and friendly. We look forward to coming again. read more
