I used KBR to renovate our master bath 8 years ago. I hired them after doing research on multiple companies and getting several quotes. I recall having a very easy time working with the project manager (Armagan), but I don't recall him being on site to do much supervision. I basically trusted the crew to do the job correctly. One of the things they did was build a custom shower for us. Right after they finished we had issues with it - specifically, the floor wasn't graded properly so water would sit on the sides. They regraded it and it was slightly better. Then within the year's warranty, they had to come back and redo some of the flooring because water was getting behind the tile and causing it to crack. After that, there weren't any obvious problems, but on occasion when there were some cracks in the grout, water would leak down to the first floor. We dealt with it by caulking and trying not spray water in one direction, but we were afraid there was just constant moisture in the floors that was creating mildew. A few months ago I touched the ceiling and my finger poked right through b/c the drywall had disintegrated. Fast forward to last week - water leaked through the ceiling again, and we had the ceilings opened to see what was happening and now we're in the midst of a major shower rebuild. Apparently they completely did the shower incorrectly. Parts of the shower did not have any Durock (apparently, there is supposed to be a layer of Durock on top of the wood followed by a rubber lining over the surfaces before you lay tile). There are portions of the shower that only had dry wall, or nothing but the wood. Also, where they did have Durock and rubber, apparently it was the wrong order (the rubber was on the wood, with the Durock on top). Also, they painted the ceiling with regular ceiling paint rather than bathroom paint, so it was peeling horribly. So we have to get that redone also. We also suspect they did some of the pipes incorrectly. The bathroom smells like sulphur at random times, and a plumber once told us they were supposed to build a pipe that releases that gas and didn't (hope it's not causing any major damage because we have no idea how to fix that problem without ripping up all the floors). It's so dispiriting to find this out years after a major remodel and all the money spent, only to now spend additional money just to fix a bad job. :( read more

This is an update. We now have to file a complaint with MHIC. Contractor appears to have abandoned the job. They do not do very good work. The crews they use are very unprofessional and get upset when you ask that use common professional upkeep, like drop cloths to protect floors. They were always months behind schedule. They damaged walls and did a poor job in installing everything they touched and just left a mess. They are were not appropriately licensed. Stay away from this company as I don't think they'll be around long after the regulators are done with them. read more

2 year update: the tile floor is coming loose and multiple tiles are popping and grout chipping due to the movement. Certainly due to poor workmanship. Its clear that some tiles are not even/level. Can't wait to have to replace the entire floor. And Our cabinets look terrible no matter how careful we are. Pictures added. One of the worst decisions I ever made was to hire KBR. Do not, under any circumstances, hire this company. I engaged KBR to remodel my condo from January - March 2021. The entire process was, and continues to be, a nightmare. The list of things they did correctly is much shorter than the list of things they did wrong. A few examples of their handiwork: - They did not properly install the electrical outlets in my kitchen island and said they could not ascertain the source of the problem without demolishing a wall in an adjoining room. - My island countertop is unlevel by 3/4 of an inch. - One of my kitchen cabinets fell off the wall. The repair person explained to me that KBR had only used 2 nails to secure it, and those nails had not been placed in the studs. - They had to redo the tile in my shower 4 times, and it still isn't right. The water does not drain evenly. In addition, they used the wrong color grout. - They did not use spa and bathroom paint for my primary bath. As a result, the paint started peeling within a month of job completion. They also painted OVER one of the sprinklers in my bathroom (!!). This is just a small sample of the issues that have arisen over the years. I have spent a lot of time and money having competent people fix these problems. I suggest you stay far away from KBR if you are looking for a quality renovation. read more

We had a wonderful experience with KBR as we used them to remodel our kitchen recently. When I initially gathered quotes, we weren't quite ready (as we thought), for the remodel yet. So after deciding to save more, we reached out again when we ready and they did honor our original quote. Just to add, I had several places come out - a lot were over budget and some not, but KBR definitely was by far the best, not only did they listen to my budget and kept it under, they also provided drawings/renderings of what it would look like and we loved their vision. Our experience with them once we signed off on the project was wonderful as well. We were quoted about 3-4 weeks and it took about 4 weeks overall (however, after the 3rd week, our kitchen was all installed and were able to use it! They were just finishing up the pantry and other small details). We had a positive experience overall with the management, project manager, contractors etc. They also did call a few times after the project, to make sure everything was going alright and if there was anything that we needed to be fixed, etc. There was a counter that was uneven in one corner, so they did call the counter people and have them adjust it. Be very careful with KBR. They moved our fridge and made a new outlet and never grounded the wire!! They also connected it to a GFI outlet (you should never do this according to several electricians). Our contract said we will get a dedicated line and we never did and now they want to charge us to complete the job. All this unprofessional work caused our fridge to go bad and had to get a new compressor. We lost a lot of food and my wife's special medicine (cost of $9,000) that needs to be refrigerated was lost. In August,2022 KBR on Wisconsin Ave in Bethesda started a renovation/remodel in my home. The job was projected to be completed in November,2022. It was just completed - July, 2023! It was a terrible experience including using outside contractors which they claim they do not do. One group of technicians showed up in a van with another company's logo on the side. Communicating with them is impossible. The designer had a good eye, but she was not good on detail. She specked a kitchen sink that couldn't be used because the cabinet that it was being installed into couldn't accommodate the original sink. The bathtub couldn't accommodate the hardware. There was supposed to be a cabinet that would accommodate a microwave oven but she specked a cabinet that was only 12 inches deep. There are no microwave ovens that are that narrow. Part of the project included installing a closet. They indicated they were using a specific company to install the closet. I vetted the company and agreed to use their services. Without informing me they changed to a different contractor. The product was inferior and not what was agreed on. After a great deal of "discussion" the closet was removed and I arranged for a different company to design and build a closet. There were 4 project managers in the job. The first one lasted one day and was gone before the project even started. The second one lasted three weeks neglected to make sure the supplies were on site so technicians were coming and not able to do work because the supplies were not here. He lasted about three weeks. The third one came and became frustrated about my complaining about the inferior closet and missing items and simply left the job saying that he wasn't going to serve as the project manager anymore and his supervisor would take over. All in all it was a terrible experience, and I urge anyone that might be considering using them to stay far away read more

Using KBR was one of the worst experiences of my life - please do not use this company. I had them remodel three of my bathrooms beginning in July and was quoted a completion date for the end of August. The project was not completed until after Halloween. I understand that most remodeling projects always take longer than expected; however, this company did not care at all. Their workers are lazy and incompetent, often arriving late and leaving incredibly early, and would never put in full days, even after I discussed it with the management and established expectations. Sometimes they would not even show up and would provide no heads up or explanation. I walked in on one of the workers literally SLEEPING on my bathroom floor. He was so deeply asleep that he was audibly snoring, sprawled out in the bathroom that he should have been working on. Other times, he would show up hungover (he verbally told me this once) and would barely work. Even as the project really began to fall behind in schedule (I am talking months behind schedule), there were days where a worker would show up for fifteen minutes, say he was going to get something, and never come back. Another day, it took him the entire eight hours to simply install the handles on my bathroom drawers, a job that I could have completed in fifteen minutes. When we reached out to the management of KBR to communicate these problems, they ignored our phone calls, voicemails, and e-mails. We never heard back from the architect of the project who we directly had the contract with, and who we tried to contact multiple times. He ignored us and refused to engage in any way when we wanted to discuss the project. In addition to all of this, KBR did a sloppy job. I have attached photos for reference, but they did not put any effort in the edges, ledges, and details of my bathroom. I had to ask the project manager to send someone two separate times to fix areas that needed to be touched up. Even after insisting on having touch-ups, only about half of the issues were fixed. Furthermore, within two months after completion, parts of my bathroom are falling apart. The plate on my shower handle has completely fallen off and the handles on my bathroom drawers are falling off. I am ASTONISHED by how poorly everything was installed. Despite all of this, however, none is as bad as the fact that KBR failed to install my shower correctly, which, to be frank, I do not understand because they are bathroom remodelers (they had one job!). My shower was intended to have a handheld shower head and a handle that would allow you to switch between that and the overhead flow of water. KBR installed it incorrectly so that my handheld did not work. In the very final days of the project, a worker was sent to fix it. He informed me that the problem lies behind the already-installed tile within the framework of the shower and that he would not be able to fix it. It was at this point that I had had enough and proceeded to fire KBR from the project. I am now stuck with a shower that does not work correctly and must now hire a real company to come out and fix it. I could honestly say a lot more, especially about their complete lack of respect for my home - they took over my entire condo and tried to store all of their materials in my living room that they wouldn't need for months (including a giant bathtub which lived in my living room for 6+ weeks), making it completely uninhabitable and impossible to even walk through. But I am sure you all get the point. Seriously, do not use this company. Washington, D.C. is full of options; KBR is not it. read more

After meeting with four top (A) rated companies from Angie's List for kitchen estimates, KBR was the only company to provide an actual (kitchen design -in 3D format), while other companies submitted worded descriptions devoid of any creatively or imagination. KBR sent kitchen designer Catherine Harvey to my home, who immediately offered functional design ideals, sketches, material guidance, and budgetary advice to support the best design. Mrs. Harvey's knowledge of construction and materials was beyond impressive, to include her artistic design execution. As a result, Mrs. Harvey submitted a 4-page kitchen design estimate complete with a 3D design illustration, pricing, and additional sketches. The type of professional estimate you would expect after watching DYI television or the Home and Garden channel (awesome). I immediately hired KBR of Bethesda to renovate my kitchen. After accepting the estimate, I met with Mrs. Harvey at KBR Bethesda headquarters to pick out my materials and to sign the finial contract for construction. Mrs. Harvey presented four designs of top quality material within my budget (see photos) with additional material options. Next, I selected my design and then read over the contract for construction. The contract was very well written, which covered start and completion dates, a detailed construction outline, materials, and flexible dates for unforeseen emergencies. Contacted KBR regarding a small kitchen remodel. One of their representatives by the name of Catherine came to the house and provided a consultation. I mentioned to her what I was looking to do. One item I mentioned was wanting ceramic tiles, she pushed and said her company only installed porcelain tiles. I had the impression she imposed a lot of her ideas, when it came to flooring and cabinets. At the end of the meeting she asked me what my budget was and I shared it with her, and she simply shook her head and said it wasn't possible... Overall I was left with a bad taste in my mouth - and I never received an estimate from her or any post-communication. It's been over a week. My husband and I are in the research stages for our new house. When we arrived, one customer was leaving and another customer was entering in addition to us. Mariahm (young woman with brunette hair) welcomed us and asked us if we had an appointment. She did so with an arrogant and dismissive attitude. When I told her we didn't, that we wanted to look around and that I had called. She turned around and walked away. She did not introduce herself or further acknowledge us as we walked around. We had previously in the day stopped at Somerville and Reico who have exemplary employees and service. The only good part of visiting KBR was having the pleasure of meeting Catherine L. Harvey who was busy with a set of clients. She acknowledged us and allowed us to continue looking. She then came by and told us that she would not be able to help us because she was with a client. We just had our kitchen redone down to the studs and can't believe how gorgeous it is! We went with design-build firm KBR Kitchen & Bath, which we used a couple of years ago to put an ensuite bathroom in our master bedroom. Both the kitchen and bathroom were massive projects but we LOVED working with KBR. They were respectful, clean, responsive, and they managed our expectations well. When an unexpected glitch happened with our flooring, the company owner jumped in to make sure everything went smoothly. Their head contractor Isaac is stellar!! Not only did he do amazing work (he is truly an artist!!! And an architect, and a plumber, and an electrician...) but he was very low-key and quiet. I trusted him completely to take care of our house while we were out. Everything about both projects were great and affordable compared with other companies. These guys will not nickel and dime you. Our office kitchen was tiny, outdated, and in desperate need of a makeover. We had to get the work done by 12/31/19 and didn't start getting quotes until November. Needless to say, our timeline was TIGHT! I was told by a couple of re-modelers that there was no way they could complete a kitchen inside of 6 weeks, I was even laughed at by a re-modeler in Old Town. When KBR said they could meet our tight timeline and tight budget I was ecstatic. Working with Cemil, the designer was easy and seamless. He was very prompt in answering all questions, and accommodating of all requests. The guys who worked on site were friendly, fast, and did great work. They even worked over the holidays to get our job done which was immensely appreciated. I wish I could give zero stars. This was truly a horrible experience working with KBR project manager Mickey Blackman. No matter what you decide about whether to work with this company, do not allow them to assign you to Mickey. He is horrible. This is taken from my Better Business Bureau complaint against them: Major Problem One: So-called "One Stop Shop" All Inclusive Agreement. When the contract was signed, there was a design for bathroom and kitchen remodel and a description by the project manager of an "all-inclusive type" arrangement whereby "all labor, materials, equipment and services" were included. When we asked if there was a limit on the materials cost, we were told "it does not work like that." We insisted that surely there must be allowances like in the other bids from contractors that we had received (and we showed him one we had received from a competitor), but he explained that they have already factored in the costs of the highest end products and if our selections cost more than what they allotted, then they would eat the difference. I specifically gave the example of: what if we wanted a $1000 LED mirror, would that be included? We were told unequivocally, yes. He claimed that the addendum to the agreement would include this level of details once he made changes to the design which he unilaterally proposed without us asking for the change. With this understanding and an agreement which had no allowances and a statement that KBR was responsible for"all labor, materials, equipment and services", we signed. But in the end we never received an addendum, as described below. And throughout the process we were constantly harrassed for our material selections even though we repeatedly asked for guidance with regard to where to pick from and how much to spend. We were given no such guidance but only AFTER orders were placed, in several instances it was demanded that we should pay the difference in cost between what they had allotted and what was spent. despite admitting that their project manager was at fault in failing to structure the agreement and making empty promises, they still over-charged us in the end. We were told that the project manager was almost fired over this screw up, yet they continued to try to press us for more and more money. This business practice appeared to be purposefully misleading with the hope that most customers will just pay what they asked. This is a completely unfair business practice and consumers deserve to know that this is how they do business. Major Problem Two. As mentioned above, KBR was supposed to confirm and provide an addendum to the agreement on the first day of the project, per the requirement of the contract. The project manager claimed that he could improve on the design we had commissioned from an architect but his own on-site manager rejected his proposed changes because it was not appropriately spaced. I along with the on-site manager spent hours coming up with the revised design that solved the spacing issues that the prior design had. The on site manager operated independently from KBR and had his own company. The KBR project manager never came to the meeting where we did this even though he was called. He never even called back. And we never received an addendum laying out the specifics on the first day or any time thereafter even though we repeatedly asked for the addendum. Despite that the project manager did not honor this requirement of the agreement, workers began demolition prior to the project manager even arriving on site to confirm what work/design was to be done. Then the project manager demanded the next installment of payment. When I told him that I did not feel comfortable making the next installment because we still had not confirmed a design as required by the agreement, he responded that then the work would stop if I did not pay because they needed the money to pay their workers. With half of our basement demolished, I felt there was no choice but to pay and I never got the addendum that we were owed. The failure to nail down specifics about what materials were selected in an addendum as promised led to much grief and delay in the ordering process as described above. Again, this was entirely unfair for him to have done. When the General Manager of KBR was informed of this, he admitted that this was improper and waived some but not ALL of the additional charges. Other Problems. The major problems above led to a 30+ day delay in project completion. Also, the project manager was very rude towards us and basically stopped all management of the project after he was reprimanded by his boss in front of us and he told us that his commission was being taken away because he admittedly screwed up. We basically managed the project ourselves with the on-site manager from thereon out. The project manager was involved only to add delay in the materials orders (and misorders), much to our disappointment. read more

This review is a long time coming, as I wanted to give myself plenty of time to calm down to give a perfectly fair review. We started a full kitchen remodel with KBR in the first week of May 2018. It was supposed to take 5 weeks max. It took about 3 months. Some delays were due to change orders (~6 days), but many were because of poor inspection scheduling, days off the job (total of 15 days when no one was even in the house), and poor time estimates for various work. The project manager was almost never in the house and we had to check work every single day to make sure things were being done according to our original plans (e.g., day 1 they demoed only a portion of the area that was being renovated because there was a miscommunication between the project manager and the subcontract crew who didn't seem to know the full scope of the renovation). In no particular order: -- On the day we arrived to sign the contract, which we had spent 2 months negotiating, the manager said there had been a mistake and pulling permits would cost an additional $3,500 beyond what we had already negotiated. -- We were told they don't hire subcontractors except for the countertops. Not true, and they even lied about this in writing. The KBR project manager and the crew (who were wearing coordinated shirts that were not KBR shirts) shook hands and introduced themselves for the first time on Day 1 of the project. The floor subcontractor made an appearance a week or two into the project. This was a major selling point, as we were debating between this company and another family-owned business. We did not want to hire a company that used subcontractors. -- Some electric work was done and we were notified afterwards that we'd have to pay an additional $1,200 for it. -- Floor subcontractor left adhesive on the engineered hardwood floor for over a month. KBR insisted on "cleaning" the floor before finally using an adhesive remover (and after lying about contacting the manufacturer about how to clean the floor, which they did not). Ultimately it didn't matter because the cheap adhesive they used had chemically etched the floor in numerous places. Those areas look as if the finish has been lightly sanded. One of the areas looks like it has a shoeprint in it. -- Structural engineer recommended a 9-inch header where a load-bearing wall was removed. We weren't crazy about it because we were trying to minimize the visual separation between the kitchen and family room; but we were fine with it. The crew inexplicably put in a 12-inch header instead and we never received an adequate explanation for why it happened, despite pulling in the project manager, the head project manager and the store manager. -- Master plumber came to check on the plumbing work. He left the washing machine drain hose out of the utility sink, which we were unaware of. Ran the washing machine and ended up with a room filled with water, which seeped under the walls to the other sides of the finished basement. After that, there were no less than 3 other leaks in the house - 1 under the sink at the supply valve, another under the sink in the drain pipe (which is when we discovered the garbage disposal wasn't tightened into place), and 1 in the toilet above the kitchen (still don't know how that they managed that). -- Ignored our requests for an island to be placed equidistant between a shelving unit and perimeter cabinets, resulting in the workspace aisle being 36" and the walk-through aisle 40". We had discussed this in writing, in a diagram, and then a couple times in text messages when it seemed they were on the verge of ignoring our request. We were then told it was too late to move the island. -- Mudroom between the project area and garage - nothing covered or protected, doors left wide open throughout construction. Took 2 days of work on a weekend to clean up the layers of dust. Construction debris frequently left for days in the grass next to the driveway. -- Instead of purchasing a custom-fit air vent cover, they made the hole in the floor bigger to accommodate a standard size air vent. This left a significant gap between the duct and the floor, which means we were left paying to heat and cool the air underneath the floor. -- And my favorite part - the crew ran the air conditioning throughout construction, with doors wide open (see mudroom and garage comment above). The HVAC broke down as the project finished, and had to be replaced. The components of the system were caked with heavy dust and construction debris, which the HVAC contractors said likely contributed to the final demise of the system (it was an old system, but had been serviced and was operating perfectly fine before that). In the end, they offered us a $100 gift certificate for the "communication problems". I would not recommend hiring KBR unless you enjoy being your own project manager and yet have no control over anything. read more

We used KBR Kitchen and Bath for our kitchen remodel which entailed gutting the space and replacing everything but the floor. We also ordered our cabinets through KBR, and Erhan did an excellent job designing our layout. In fact, everyone on the team was professional, pleasant to have around, and attentive. They made great suggestions, came through on all that they said they would do, and cleaned up impeccably at the end of each day and at the end of the job. They finished in 8 weeks (the estimate was for 8) and on budget; no surprises. All the work was first rate, with much attention paid to detail. I am delighted with my new kitchen (unfortunately it hasn't made me a better cook!) and highly recommend KBR. They were truly a delight to work with and made what we expected to be an ordeal an adventure. When I'm ready to remodel my bathroom, I will definitely call on them. read more

We decided to completely revamp our 1980s kitchen and hired KBR for the project.The KBR staff was easy to work with and clearly devoted to excellent communication with clients...which was much appreciated and helped immensely to reduce the stress associated with any remodel. They repeatedly demonstrated that their interest was ensuring a quality remodel, and when unanticipated problems arose (and they always will!) KBR found thoughtful, appropriate, and flexible solutions. The project was kept on time with minimum disruption to the rest of our house. Had a complete Kitchen remodel in fall of 2014. gutted my 13-14 kitchen and installed new design craft cabinets new countertop, new appliances the whole shabang. I worked with Armagan and found him to be incredibly helpful and very responsive. The overall project took a little under 4 weeks and stayed on budget, aprox 30k. The price I was quoted, was the price I paid. Overall, I would highly recommend Armagan and KBR. The crew did an overall good job and was relatively clean. I would just keep an eye on them, some days they didn't show up, but the end product and the overall positive experience, I can forgive. read more

We hired KBR Bethesda to completely do-over our guest bathroom and make updates to our master bath. We were very happy with the process of working with KBR from Sim's initial visit to our home through completion of the work and thrilled with the results. In the guest bath, KBR removed the 27 year-old soffit fluorescent lighting; installed new vanity lighting; an additional outlet, replaced the vanities, vanity counter, tub and floor tile, tub, toilet. The vanities , counters and tiles they have to choose from are high quality and offer a good range of choices. In the master, they replaced the same soffit lighting; replaced the vanities and counter; installed new outlets (including one inside the tower cabinet between the two sinks); removed a medicine cabinet and repaired the wall. They replaced all the plumbing fixtures, vent fans in both baths and painted both rooms. Douglas and Carlos, our two primary workers, arrived early each morning and worked tirelessly all day, cleaning up at the end of each day. They made sure to consult with us on discretionary things, such as the placement of grab and towel bars. We cannot recommend KBR highly enough.
