It's a messy little 24 hour diner, but the food is fantastic. Loaded hash browns like the KD's southern chicken on hash or the Rafferty are my personal favorites, but they serve all kinds of breakfast options and typical American lunch options. Great little diner. It's kind of dark and you wonder if it's really clean, but the simple food overcomes the doubts. The po-boy sandwiches are very large so unless you are starving, order the half size. The bread used is fantastic and the meat is tossed on the grill to get that great flavor. We waited 10 minutes seated at the counter before I asked for menus, and they were more or less thrown at us. Another 10 minutes, I asked to order, and was told "I'll get your waitress." Another 5 minutes to order, then the group of 4 at the counter who came in after us were served. I talked my husband into waiting, then the guy next to me got his food. He came in 30 minutes after we did. We left, after the manager said, "They're cooking your food now. Too bad, because we'd been (no sirloin for steak and eggs) there before and really liked the food. We ordered the hashbrown omlette, grits and bisquits, with a side of gravy and extra bisquits, not knowing the portion sizes. My goodness the meal was phenomenal. We could have ordered one omlette and split between two people. It was the best, fluffiest bisquits I have seen in a long time. Very inexpensive large portions and SUPER food. *if your not a local, they don't talk to you* First off, I travel for a living and I've been to Alot of diners in my time. I pulled up and noticed this place was packed, I was starving so I stopped. I walk in and the first sign you notice says "please don't sit at dirty tables" well I looked around and noticed only two open spots and they were at the kitchen bar. So I waited since the area had dirty plates from the previous customer. Not once did any employee acknowledge I was there, i stood there for about 8-10 minutes because it was late and much wasn't open. Then I noticed almost every one was a regular and knew the staff by first name. Ya, screw the new customers who's got a expense report who tips 30%. I ended up walking out after that and went to buffalo wild wings where I had 3 adult beverages a salad and some chicken for 15$. Was really looking forward to some diner food since. Sadly this place isn't a diner it's a s#@%show and completey dysfunctional. read more

Yuck! None of us had the breakfast but every item we ordered was gross. I had the mushroom Swiss burger and there was so much mayo on the burger that the meat would not stay on the patty.....it kept sliding off. Oh, and the patty seemed to be a frozen patty.....not fresh. Another person ordered the hamburger steak. Was just okay. My fries were cold and looked to be frozen out of a bag. I ordered a side of ranch and she brought it back to me spilling over the top like she was trying to be funny. All of the waitresses were rude. There was only two be girl (at the register) that was nice. Every time we asked for an item, we were looked at like we were inconveniencing our waitress. I will never go back here again! Don't try to find anything open on Sunday in lake Charles. Pickings are slim. Do yourself a favor and go to the golden nugget and eat at a Landry's restaurant. May be a bit pricey but it will beat eating crap like this place serves. read more

I have been to KD's multiple times and the food is always amazing which is why I always come back. The service is always subpar but it's ok because the food, again, is amazing. Today this just was not the case. I ordered a steak medium rare and it came out medium well no big deal, I just asked for it to be fixed. When I approached the server, a man with a bacon print apron, he answered "this is medium rare but ok" so I replied this isn't medium rare and I work in a restaurant I know my steaks. He replies " that is medium rare and I work here too." The next steak came out prepared also medium well to well done. There were no beverage refills offered and we were never checked on. I NEVER leave a restaurant without leaving a tip knowing what wages servers make because I AM A SERVER, but this was by far the WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED ANYWHERE. Ordered a breakfast to go, when I arrived I stood at the counter for at least 5 minutes before even being acknowledged then it took another 5 minutes or so before getting the total on my order to pay. When she gives me the receipt there was no pen to write with so I asked for a pen and she throws it on the counter as if she put out... was hesitant to write a review because this place does not need any advertising or new business. We were in Lake Charles mainly for the casinos. Casino food is typically expensive and soso, so we got online and took a chance on this local hangout. Holy Moly! There was a line even though it was only 10am. Mostly locals who told us this was one of the few places they would wait in line for. Were seated within 15 minutes and we were treated to a meal of a lifetime. The coffee was great. service was great. I'm not going to comment on the prices because you wouldn't believe me. Oh yeah, the food: eggs cooked perfectly, real bacon, homemade biscuit, great pancakes, and it all come to us smoking hot. And then there was the conversation. Luckily we were seated at the counter and enjoyed talking to several locals about things only the locals would know about. We will be going back, so if you are reading this, hopefully you won't go and cause us to wait in line again. A rare gem in this day and time. read more

You read that correctly, KD's Diner built a reputation of serving you food with attitude, that's all apart of the history but in today's time KD's Diner has a high reputable status among the locals, they serve you everything from breakfast to po-boys, to salads and steaks. They have a pretty simple straight to the point menu, the size of the place can remind you of a smaller waffle house but it serves it's purpose as a large breakfast nook. The food tastes good, my only personal opinion about the seafood is that the shrimp tastes like it comes straight out of the sea, I understand fresh seafood, but lighten up on the sea. This place is always packed throughout the day, the only times that I have been around to not catch it so busy may be between 1p.m. and 4p.m. and that's about it. The city life is KD's Diner at night when everything else around the mall is closed. KD's diner is a city jewel which has been in operation since the early 90's and still operates strong today. The owner has passed away, rest his soul, but his legacy of being a dominate force in the food industry for Lake Charles will live on. Stop by try the KD's Small Breakfast for those on the go.
