I visited during a recent trip to LC to see a show since I missed the performer in Houston. I arrived at peak time on Saturday it seemed since the parking lot was packed, and once inside, also packed. It took a few mins to clean the last open table. The menus are on the table but you really don't need a menu here since there are only a few items. Everyone comes here for po-boys obviously and they have a few to choose from. The top 2 choices are the most common, the special and the surf and turf. To me, what makes a good po-boy, is the bread....like many other sandwiches. If you have great bread, you're usually making a good sandwich. I tried the small special, while the rest of the table tried either the special or surf and turf. They don't have a formal kids menu, but they just have either PB&J or grilled cheese. We tried the grilled cheese. My fav ended up being the surf and turf due to it being cleaner to eat and more variety of taste and texture between the bread. I liked the special, but I forgot to ask the server to remove the American cheese, so it made it taste funny and would have been better without it. read more

After hearing many recommendations, we finally made a stop at Darrell's while passing through Lake Charles. This local staple has a layback dive bar feel, and the tables and menus are covered with local ads. The menu is small, focused on their signature po boys (sadly they don't have fries on the menu, only bagged chips). We ordered two of their most popular po boys, the Darrell's Special and Surf&Turf. The portions are massive. The first bite was rich, flavorful, especially good with their house jalapeño mayo. That said, after a few bites, it started to feel a bit too heavy. The thick layers of sliced cheese also seemed a little unnecessary. Overall I can see why this spot has a loyal following, personally, I prefer the fried shrimp/oyster po boys which are much lighter. read more

Old school classic po-boy spot in Lake Charles. Interior is very rad and very dive bar esque. The menu is full of local advertisements and is simple. Get your po boy's. We got their top two most popular options; the roast beef and the roast beef with shrimp. Unfortunately they only have bagged chips as drinks and not fries. The meal itself was very rich and heavy, I think we could have done without the layers of cheese. The flavor is solid and is a good non fried version of the Cajun classic. Can see why this is considered a very top spot on many lists. read more

The poor boy was amazing. I think I had the ham and rose beef one with the gravy on the side. I'm sorry if you guys do not call it gravy. I had a local take me there to the drive-through. It was probably like a foot-long or a little bit more. I was only able to eat half, but very satisfied. read more

As many times in my life that I have passed thru Lake Charles, I've never taken the 10 minute detour on Loop 210 to go to Darrell's. If I'm 100% transparent, I've never heard of it. But, I saw a reel on Facebook about two English guys who were ranting and raving over it. Coincidentally, I was passing thru a week later around lunch time and so I decided to stop. Wow. Am I glad I did. First, this place was PACKED OUT on a Friday around 11:30AM. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for two. But it was definitely worth the wait. We had the shrimp po-boy. Very good. The shrimp was grilled. Would definitely order again. However, a friend of mine went to school at McNeese in Lake Charles (Go Pokes) and her eyes lit up when we returned to Houston and told her where we ate lunch. She highly recommended that we try the Darrell's Special next time we are there. Coincidentally, we will be passing thru again next weekend so, we are going to stop in again and give the "special" a try. Until then, if you are reading this review, it's an easy 4-star review. Highly recommend. I will say the parking lot is small and parking can be tight. But, what that really means is the food must be really good if you have problems finding parking at a restaurant. Parking was the only negative. Bottom line - Good po-boys. Small menu but everything was delicious. Will definitely go back when we are passing thru Lake Charles. Bon appétit, y'all. read more

Darrell's is as good as everybody says it is! When you walk in you are greeted by a super friendly staff, seated , and given the menu of about 6 sandwiches. The ambience resembles kind of a sports bar-like atmosphere, and is really laid back. My son ordered the Darrell, and I got the shrimp. They were both fantastic! My son and I stopped on our way to Baton Rouge. We split the surf and turf (their large sandwiches are huge). I love a good roast beef poboy with gravy. This wasn't it. The gravy was okay, but not full of flavor. The shrimp were small, but not tiny, but you couldn't really taste them. The sandwich was messy, but in an expectedly good way. The bread was pretty good, but not exceptional. Service was fast even though they were crowded at 1:30 on a Friday. I might go back to try a different sandwich, but I probably would not expect it to be great. But at least the location is right off the highway between Austin and Baton Rouge!!!! read more

Incredibly affordable meal that was always super busy at any time of the day - your best bet is bar seating unless you're ok with waiting 30+ mins for a table. Plenty of parking but the lot is tight! The po boys were solid! Great seasoning, the sauce complemented it well. The bread was just your standard roll and I wish it was a little toasted because the sandwich got soggy very fast. This place is fabulous! We are not really Poboy people however, we are now Darrell's Poboy people for sure! It was suggested by three different folks' before we decided to give it a try and we were not dissappointed. From the cheerful hostess and server, to the fact that our order came super fast, to the well-made cocktails. Tyler (Darrell's grandson) gave us the 411 about the 40-year history. From grandma's gravy and its beginnings as a watering hole to 3 moves and a second location in Jennings, it has grown in business exponentially! When you give them a try you will understand why! So this place is popular to say the least. The menu is small but the food is very generous. Service was spot on, our server was super sweet and attentive. This is a no frills, but clean and well appointed. All of us had the Surf and Turf except for me, and I had the turkey sub. When we walked in, we were welcomed by a nice young man, who promptly seated us, then got our drinks. The waitress was very nice and efficient, took out order, we had ordered 2 small specials and chips, she recommended that we just order a large sandwich and they'd cut it. Saving us about $8. It's hard for me to try new poyboys places because where I'm from the best is olde tyme grocery and I have found nothing that compares...This is close in a way! We got the special with no lettuce. Make sure to get the jalapeño mayo on it as it has more flavor. It comes with a pickle slice. The half size is more than enough for one person. The sweet tea was very good. The bread was great, the sandwich was plain, nothing special, sorry, I don't get all the praise. They need an Italian sandwich on the menu... ham sandwich, then add salami, mozzarella, lettuce, tomatoes, thin sliced onions, creamy Italian dressing (on the side). Next time I will have the surf and turf and maybe understand the high rating. Service was great, the entire staff was really on point. This is my favorite restaurant in town. The Daryl special is amazing if you are ever in Lake Charles, you need to try this place.

We saw all the reviews and thought we would give it a shot. I definitely give them four stars. Wasn't bad but wasn't the best in the world either. This had a lot of reviews but I think in my opinion it's kind of hyped up. My girl got the shrimp po boy. She thought it would be cooked lol. It wasn't. Down on. You gotta sell fried shrimp option. My roast beef one was good. It was very messy. I'm glad we stoped in and tried them. I would definitely stop in again but it don't that's fine too. I'm glad we tried it. They get really packed but the food comes out quick. Very limited simple menu. Great job and solid four stars for sure. read more

Went yesterday with my SO and friend. I got the surf and turf and my husband got the special po boy. Friend also got the surf and turf sans mustard. I actually preferred the special. It had ham, turkey, and roast beef with cheese and it was so savory without being too salty. We didn't necessarily want chips but because everything is so texturally soft, the chips were definitely needed. Be aware that the surf and turf is juicy and has lots of liquid so it will be messy. Somehow though the sandwhich still stayed together. The shrimp part of the sandwhich was my least favorite as they are tiny shrimp so not much texture vs if they used fewer bigger shrimps. The flavor of the shrimp the seasoning was good but the shrimp flavor itself wasn't my favorite if that makes sense. Service was great and we definitely would be down to have a meal here again. No pictures because inside the lighting is dim so the pictures came out making the sandwich look unappealing which it is not! read more

Stopped here on our way from TX to NOLA on the recommendation of a friend. We pulled in about 10:55am & they open at 11. There were already people lined up outside and waiting for it to open. We were sat quickly once the doors opened promptly at 11. My daughter & I shared the Darrell special spicy mayo & sauce on the side & am thankful we did. The sandwich was delicious "dry". My husband got the Roast Beef with spicy mayo & his sandwich was super messy. He said it was good but had a bit too much mayo for his liking.
