This is THE local spot for 24/7 food service and has been open for decades. Everyone who lives in or around LC knows where and what KD's is. They also have a go to dish they order without looking at the menu. If it's past midnight and before noon, they will most likely have a line. My favorite item has the be the Hungry Man's Breakfast (aka the Fat Kid). For a few bucks, you can get an entire large breakfast with pancakes and some awesome service. I love KD's. It is kind of like a truck stop diner, but the food is better than that! It certainly is greasy, but not as greasy as stuff from Mary Ann's. It is fun to eat there, especially when there's room for friends. It's great because you can easily get custom orders as the food is made fresh. If you want chicken on rice, they'll make it. You can even add cheese and gravy to it if you wish. Then, of course, they have their already set meals on the menu. read more

I ordered gumbo here this past Friday. Let's just say, I will not be running to try anything else on their menu. It was flavorless except for the taste of dark roux. It was also much thicker than I prefer my gumbo to be. Luckily, my mom had previously made and froze gumbo for me so, I was able to partake in real goodness when I got home later. Always amazing Breakfast but I can't even use the bathrooms here because they smell so bad. But the food is so worth it to go! There honestly isn't any other place in Lake Charles that serves better breakfast and the staff is the bomb! But always so busy!! And sometimes have to wait to be seated. This place is kind of like a necessity for locals late at night. One can eat at the charming bar or play a tune from their jukebox. I love the simple breakfasts while my husband loves the lunch menu. This may be the most polarizing place in Lake Charles, but I'm firmly on the side of people who love it (probably for the same reasons that others hate it). The place is cramped and greasy, the clientele is drunk and overly conversational, and the wait times are unpredictable. The hygiene is suspect and the decor is tacky. Normally I love KDs. I've never had a problem with service and we love the food. However, last time we went there was a black hair in my husband's hash browns. I informed the waiter, and told him that we weren't upset but obviously we would not be eating the hash browns. He did profusely apologize, but I was surprised that we were still charged for them. Most restaurants would comp a meal with such an obvious error (not to mention health code violation). That caused us to notice a cook with a full beard working that night, which is usually not allowed. I'm sure we will go back, but we'll be more careful in inspecting our food. read more

We were looking for a diner for dinner. The hotel suggested this one down the street. Turns out it was more dive than diner but we had a tasty and good meal. I had a roast beef sandwich and Mrs Eva had a breakfast. Their gumbo was very good. The place is old, lots of locals, a hang-out for old men, a little grungy, but an OK neighborhood diner. I'm a local and eat at KD's once a week. They have the best gumbo bar none within a 100 mile radius of Lake Charles! I swear it's phenomenal! You must get their coffee! That's all I'll say about that! Don't even get me started on their breakfast, which you can order at any hour. I have given this place many chances because my husband's family is crazy about it, but after too many bad things, we will never be back. First off, the wait is terrible since it is so small and they take forever to buss a table. I have left with a hole in the seat of my pants because their booths are falling apart. The bad part is they knew it was broken, but did not bother to fix it. Today was the final straw when a server was incredibly rude. We left and finally went to my choice of southern spice where you get way better food and way better service. Only go here if you like to be belittled by stoner servers. read more

For context, I visited this restaurant only once with my girlfriend. We went for a night time dinner around 9 pm. We may have been... under the influence a little but we weren't so far gone as to not be able to tell bad food from good food. Service: I give this a 3/5. Service was acceptable. After serving us out food, our waitress never checked in on us and had clearly walked past us several times. Aside from that, the service was fine and our meals were out fairly quickly Food: The food was pretty good! My girlfriend had the hamburger steak with gravy and I had a cheeseburger. Between us we shared a plate of their basic breakfast (eggs, hash browns, biscuit, and bacon.) We shared bites from each others plates. My burger was great! A big patty that was nice and juicy with a little bit of char. I wolfed the whole thing down so fast I barely noticed the oil dripping onto the plate. My girlfriends steak was up to par too, as was her steak fries. The breakfast portion of the meal was the weakest, the hashbrowns having no seasoning, not even salt (although salt shakers and provided.) Eggs were fine, the biscuit was good and not dry nor gummy, and the bacon decent. It works better as side dishes than as a whole meal, but everything came out hot and freshly cooked. The food gets a solid 4 from me. Cleanliness/Atmosphere: This is probably the weakest aspect of the restaurant, although it's a part of it that has the least bearing on my opinion. The restaurant was far from spotless although not nearly as filthy as a lot of reviews led me to believe. The atmosphere is bland, although they make an effort with some signs they hang up around the place. This section gets a solid 2 to light 3 from me. I once came here at two in the morning after binge studying for a final and waited 30 minutes to be served drinks and order and then another 45 waiting for food only for the server to return saying they lost our order. Arrived around 9 on a Sunday morning and was able to get a booth immediately. If you come any later you'll be waiting in line for tables. The coffee is sooo good along with every breakfast item on the menu. Our waitress was so good with our 3 kids and I'm really regretting getting her name because she was top notch! Me and my husband were pretty hungry one night after a trip to the movies and KDs was conveniently opened and right next to the theater. We sat down and had to wait probably 20 minutes until we got waited on. I ordered the quesadillas which were pretty good and filling, but they did take a bit long to arrive.
