Took a quick trip to Louisville yesterday for a concert. Celebrated our anniversary before the show with dinner at the Kebab House and it was so good! I got the chicken shawarma platter, which came with a very generous portion of chicken, hummus, vegetable rice, a salad and garlic sauce. They brought pita bread for the table plus a couple extra samples of things for us to try - lentil soup and an after dinner sage tea. We dined at the Kebab House for the first time, it's a small restaurant on Baxter Avenue near all the bars and restaurants. Since it was a late lunch, had no problem parking on the street. Service was excellent, from what I could tell there was one server who was doing it all for the restaurant, which included about 5 tables. We were immediately served a small portion of lentil soup, which was warm and delicious. The menu is simple with plates and sandwiches. I ordered the gyro sandwich and small hummus. The hummus arrived quickly and was a good portion for the small. It was served with two half pitas, not nearly enough for a bowl full of hummus IMO. It was creamy but still had some depth. The pita was a bit dry. My gyro arrived next and it was a very large portion. It was served open, which I prefer, and was smothered in the tazeki sauce, lettuce, cucumbers and gyro meat piled on it. The meat was very good. After our meal we were served a small portions of sweet clove black tea. This is made with marinated sliced chicken wrapped with garlic sauce, salad and pickle. And like I said, tasty. I wish there was a bit more chicken in this sandwich, but otherwise it was good. I also got a piece of pistachio baklava -- thin layers of phyllo dough stuffed with crushed pistachio topped with honey and lemon syrup. This was a large piece of baklava and such an indulgent, mid-day treat. Overall, Kebab House seems like a good place to order from. I would do so again. read more

Great spot I wish I'd checked out sooner, and I will be sure to atone for my failure by making more frequent visits. Food is delicious. Flavorful kebabs, quality shawarma, and tasty gyros...all served in hearty portions. And I have a mild hummus addiction (please don't judge), theirs is a smooth, creamy, perfectly seasoned entry into the pantheon. Service is friendly and helpful (though when there's a crowd, it can get a little slow just because there's only one...it's not a huge space, to be clear, just hard to keep up with the tables for one person). And there is a bonus hospitality factor: you are welcomed with a cup of lentil soup (I'd gladly lap up a bowl of it...maybe the whole pot), and they bring a pleasant cup of hot tea to close it out (well, the latter hasn't happened every time, so maybe it's an ad hoc thing). My family and I were very excited to eat here but our experience unfortunately just got worse and worse as the meal went on. While the food overall was fine, it was how we were treated that ruined our experience. The food took quite some time to come out, so by then we were all very hungry. Two of our dishes were made wrong; my dad ordered a gyro and was given a platter of meat instead and my mother ordered hers plain and it came out with everything on it. Then, I found an actual STAPLE in my food! I was about to eat it when I thankfully noticed but seriously a STAPLE, totally UNACCEPTABLE. When I politely brought up my food and asked for it to be remade due to the staple, the waitress never even said sorry or asked if I was ok. She held out her hand and asked nonchalantly if I want another plate or no. After my food was remade, she never came over to check on us, nor did any type of manager come to our table. Then on top of all of this we go to check out and get asked to pay FULL PRICE with no mention of the staple or any other issues and no apologies once again. While the food was fine, I would NEVER come again simply due to the lack of compassion, attentiveness, and basic manners at this establishment. Very disappointing. read more

Kebab House is a compact, colorful situation located on Bardstown road, serving up made-to-order Mediterranean food that's worth the wait. I was heading to meet friends for a bring-your-own-dinner picnic and Kebab House was right on the way. The gentleman manning the counter welcomed me in and assured me that my choice of the falafel sandwich was a good one. As they prepare everything to order I had a seat at the window and spent a delightful few minutes people-watching while my sandwich was crafted. The falafel sandwich is just lovely - a largish, thinnish warmed pita cocoons a beautiful medley of smashed falafel, hummus, tahini, and pickles. I appreciated the care taken to evenly distribute the falafel so every bite is similar, and a girl doesn't need to worry about chomping down on a giant ball of falafel unexpectedly. The pickles are mild and add a welcome crunch and tang that balances the fried goodness of the falafel. For $7.99 (plus tip, always tip) this was an excellent bargain - both quality and quantity-wise, and with so many options on the menu I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

We took a road trip from an hour away and decided to try Kebab House. Typically mediterranean cuisine offers many dishes that are plant-based/vegan which is why I chose this restaurant. The service was okay. I specifically ask for vegan options before ordering. The the waitress was not too sure about what options they had. I ordered the lentil soup and once it came out I was told it was made with chicken stock so we sent it back. We asked about the falafel but we're told it had chicken in it when falafel is typically made with chickpeas. After I asked again, the waitress asked the chef and was advised it was made with chickpeas. Overall the experience was meh. I would not come back as I want to make sure there are options to eat and the staff should be well versed a out different dietary preferences. read more

We ordered the Kebab House special. It was enough to feed the two of us and we got to try a mix of items. They could give a bit more vegetables. We got maybe a quarter of grilled onions and a couple pieces of other veggies. The majority of the tray was rice, a lot of filler. Food was tasty -- I didn't care for the stuffed grape leaves. I heard the people that had the Falafel House came back and opened this place so I was so hopeful. It is definitely a nicer place with plenty of seating, cleaner, and comfortable. The staff is friendly and they get food to you quickly. We got the hot tea with sage and it was definitely delicious. We started with the stuffed grape leaves and they were good. We had some lentil soup and it was good. I got the chicken shawarma and it was decent, definitely had to add the yogurt and the tomato onion sauce they bring out to get a better flavor. Maybe that was planned? The Hummus at the Falafel House was so much better than the Hummus was at this Kebab House. I can't put my finger on it, but it was far better before. It's a bit odd as far as service goes. We walked in and there were 4-5 people standing around evidently waiting for takeout. We got seated and given some menus, but then it took a bit for the waitress to come back to get our drinks and order. The drinks came about ten minutes later - there's a drink machine in the dining area and we thought maybe we were supposed to get our own, but eventually the drinks appeared. The hummus is to notch - great consistency, wonderful flavor. That alone makes it worth the trip to us. But the chicken shwarma is great too - seasoned well. When I heard that the original owners of Falafel House opened in a new location in the Highlands, it shot to the top of my list of must-try restaurants. For years, I frequented the old location. It's reminiscent of old friends, first dates, and a whole different era of my life. When I moved from Frankfort Avenue to Schnitzelburg, I thought, "I'll still be the same distance from Falafel House." It gave me an odd sense of security. It felt like home. When I heard they were closing, I think I actually cried. I might take my food a bit too seriously, but I can't recall being more devastated over any business closing since Doll's Market closed more than a decade ago. I have a lot of menu to explore, but my first order was an easy one. Maybe I should've put a banana next to my picture for scale, but the Special Kebab House entree will feed your whole family. Special Kebab House- one of each kebab, chicken, kefta, lamb and chicken shawarma and four falafel, four grape leaves, grilled vegetables, hummus, rice, and Greek salad. I can't put my finger on exactly why Kebab House tastes better than every other Mediterranean restaurant I've ever been to. No, I haven't been to all of them and of course my opinion is subjective. We ordered the sample platter for about $40. It was so worth it. I love the falafel and the grilled meats. We share for two people which still had left overs for the next day. The service here is amazing! They were so warm and thoughtful. We were give a sample of free soup and sage tea. I have never had sage tea, and I can attest that it was so warm, earthy, and so tasty. New guys In town. This part Bardstown rd needed a good Mediterranean place for a long while--and I personally think that this is the one. Food is fantastic, delicious, made to order and the meat very tender. Service is wholesome and prompt and upon arrival you are offered a sample of their super delicious lentil soup. Location is fantastic with plenty on street parking (time of day depended) as well as parking in the back. You have to try the mixed kebab platter with beef/chicken and my fav--lamb. Yes, you should ABSOLUTELY come here and yes, you should add this to your favorites on your GPS because you will be back again and again. Are you a Mediterranean food fan? Because same and since moving here from CA, we have had some seriously lackluster lamb and that makes us homesick.. until I found Kebab House we finally found somewhere comparative to our family restaurant in CA and I will make this drive 3x a month to get some food in my daughters rotation that isn't nuggets or tenders lol. We had a big omelette breakfast and then self toured Cave Hill Cemetery and planned to come here for lunch and I am just so stoked we did. My kids who love walking through cemeteries couldn't wait to leave to go get "lambies and fries" and because of that I wasn't even hungry by the time we arrived. I planned on a bowl of lentil soup and some kebabs to go but we were served 4 little cups of the soup for free and HOLY MOLY it was incredible!! I ate my kids soup and mine and didn't have to order any lol I ended up choosing a chicken shwerma sandwich to go because it mentioned garlic sauce and I was sold. My husband wanted to try everything so he ordered the platter and he and my son shared the steak and I tried his rice and salad too. He throughly enjoyed it and ate half before I could take a picture lol. The hummus is among some of the best I've ever had and could go on everything in our diet lol. I'm sad I didn't just eat my sandwich when it was fresh and hot because by the time I did, it was soggy and I couldn't get the full experience. It was still pretty flavorful though.
