The drive for this beach for me is a bit long with traffic, but it's one of my favorite hidden gems. Half of the beach dogs are allowed, the other half they are not due to protection of the wildlife/plant life. It's about a 1 mile walk each way down a slim trail to/from the beach, but it's so worth it. Most times I visit here it's never busy or crowded. Kehoe Beach is one of my favorite beaches in the Bay Area. Other local beaches get a lot of hype, but with that hype comes crowds and traffic-- two things I prefer to avoid when I'm trying to relax. Kehoe allows dogs, which is why I found myself out here a few weeks ago. Dogs are only permitted on-leash- this is clearly stated on the NPS website and by a sign at the beginning of the trail. But as is so often the case in Marin, in my experience, we encountered many (if not most) other dogs off-leash. For that reason, if you have a reactive or fearful dog, I wouldn't recommend bringing them out here, as none of the off-leash dogs we saw were under voice control. Pets are not permitted south of the trail from March 1st - September 30th because the area is a protected habitat for snowy plovers. When you get to the beach, there's some interesting geology to check out. You can see a reverse fault and rocks that are millions of years old. You can also see a variety of wildlife. I wouldn't wade or swim out here, as the tide can be unpredictable and harsh, rip currents are a real hazard, the water is very cold, and it's within the Red Triangle (the 31.7 miles between Kehoe Beach and the Farallon Islands just isn't enough for me.) The peace, quiet, and beautiful views are worth the drive-- just don't tell the folks over at Stinson. ;) read more

Visited with my dogs for the first time on Memorial Day. The beach is beautiful. We had checked out the off leash beach at Bodega Bay first (don't waste your time- it's just the boat ramp area. Very small beach & not a picturesque POV of the Bay). Drove down through beautiful farms & ranches & the last stop was Kehoe around 6 pm. So we practically had the beach to ourselves. Really nice beach. Lost 1 star due to the fact the path you have to take from the staging area to the beach, was overgrown with painful Thistle! Like jungle overgrown! Not fun having to get through it twice. If there is a different access to Kehoe- would love to know about it. Did enjoy the small wildlife along the path though. Beautiful beach! read more

its not recommended to swim, wade or surf here due to shark warning and strong undertow but it's so beautiful! it was pretty chilly and windy, the sand is so warm though! i appreciate that it's half dog friendly and the other half is dogs off limits. the bathroom is a trek away from the beach at the beginning of the little trail. i was able to see an otter swimming by the shore. read more

Great dog-friendly beach in Point Reyes! The trail is short and full of lupines and queen anne's lace - with a protected marshy area to the left with bunnies. There are cows up and to the right, and beautiful cliffs at the beach. Don't worry, there is plenty of sand and surf for everyone to have an expansive patch of beach to themselves and their four-legged best friends. The drive alone should compel you to come to kehoe beach. It is one of Marin's hidden treasures. The water is freezing cold, but that's not much different than any other beach in the bay area. It's not crowded so you can lay out and it's not windy so you don't need to worry about getting sand all in your eyes. There are Clover Stornetta cows on the cliff that look suicidal that make the whole experience even more surreal. It's about an hour from SF but the windy drive is worth it. great beach to bring our dogs!! One of our dogs struggles with reactivity and is not good with off leash dogs approaching but every person was so respectful at this beach!! any off leash dogs just kept to their owners and I did not see any of them rush dogs they did not know. The hike up is a little narrow but people were so considerate and if they had dogs, some would move theirs aside and let others pass. The is the most respectful dog friendly (reactive dogs included) beach I have been in the bay area extended area. Both our pups had a great, stress free time and it was great to see owners of dogs who might need some extra space being great advocates for their dogs. We saw a ton of dog parents actively training their dogs which is always nice to see! Great dog friendly beach :) read more

Super empty and beautiful beach in Point Reyes! I have never seen a beach so empty in California before. Dogs are allowed (on leash) but honestly there's barely anyone here I don't know who would know.. -- PARKING -- Plenty on the side of the road right by the entrance of Kehoe Beach. -- DIRECTIONS -- The walk/hike to Kehoe beach is 0.6 miles ~ 10 minutes. Best place to bring your dog! Today marked my 5th visit to this somewhat quiet beach nestled in the back roads of Point Reyes. The drive here - cute places to stop and eat! Traffic ... well, there is none which makes the drive one to relish in the scenery. Watch out for the cyclists! There is a quick walk to the beach, great place to watch the birds although I'm not a bird watcher, but they are cute and lots of them! The right-side of the beach are for the dogs. So far I have not come across one person who has not been friendly or welcomed my baby. The other dog owners (and their dogs) have been so pleasant. Those that are off leash, it's a great sight to watch the dogs embrace the freedom. It's well kept up, little trash although I do wish dog owners would be better at picking up the poop! So watch your step on the trail to the beach. Trash cans would be great here! read more

It's hard for me to write about anything in Point Reyes National Seashore because I hate to bring more attention to my favorite place on earth but, sometimes it just seems like the right thing to do. This area is magical, it moves you and you always want to return. One of my favorite stops is Kehoe beach. Aside from the stunning beauty, the reason for this is that the beach is dog friendly (there aren't many in Pt. Reyes) and the hike is quick. It's a bit of a drive out there but, the time passes quickly due to the amazing scenery. Be prepared to see plenty of cattle and dairy cows along the way! Might I suggest playing a little "hey cow!"? The beach can be super windy so, dress in layers because you're on the Pacific ocean and never know what to expect. read more

A Bay-Area beach that allows dogs! I really enjoyed this beach and the people using it. The Trail to the beach is a very easy walk through some amazing wildflowers. The Street parking is the only tough thing about this beach. Parking can be hard to come by especially on a weekend. This beach offers a lot of space and is a nice beach for a long stroll. I went on a Saturday in April..it wasn't crowded at all. It's almost always windy here and I would recommend taking a light jacket. I look forward to visiting again and again. read more

What a happy discovery! I spent 2 days at the Cottages at Pt Reyes with my dog and found Kehoe Beach while out for a drive. Roadside parking and a half mile walk to get to the beach. Dogs on leash only, but I went on a Thursday and had the whole beach to myself (seriously-not a person in sight). I didn't let my dog go in the surf, thanks to the posted warnings of rough surf, sharks and obvious rip currents. But the walk was beautiful and the sun was warm enough to enjoy laying out for a bit. I will definitely be back! Great beach for nature photos too! read more

Ok, for those who have never been here before and don't know where it is... note that: - It's NOT in San Francisco (as the location on this Yelp review says) or Marin headlands!! It's in Tomales Bay. - It's an extra 30-40 min drive north past Stinson beach. (I didn't realize we were so far north!) - It's a 5-10 min walk from the main road to the beach (scenic trail ... lots of green ... rocks turn into sand ... you're almost there!!) If you were like us and brought tons of picnic stuff, be prepared to walk a little before hitting the sand. - The bathrooms located right where the trail starts smells like rotting death marinated in camel sh*t. Bring your own paper towels/wipes and hold your breath. - It can get foggy here... kinda weird! Stinson beach stole all the sun! The beach is really beautiful (for a norcal beach...) Soft, warm sand! The scenic drive is also very nice. Pretty secluded and not as crowded as Stinson Beach. People love bringing their dogs and it was fun watching them romp around. Not very many people when we went so that was pretty awesome. I'd def come back on a sunnier/warmer day :) read more

Not only is the drive out to Kehoe Beach incredibly gorgeous (with a stop at Priscilla's Pizza for lunch on the way), but the hike from the parking area to the beach is also incredibly gorgeous. Sophie absolutely loves sniffing all the wildflowers, areas where other dogs have probably peed in the past, and when another doggie walks past she gets so excited and gets a second to sniff their butt and play before we continue walking out to the beach, where the real fun starts. When you reach the beach, if you're dogless you can go left (although I've never been there, because I've always had Sophie with me), and if you aren't dogless, you go right, up along the coast, toes in the sand. We bring our Chuckit so Sophie can run nice and far to play fetch, and we also always bring a big garbage bag to collect any washed up plastics (of which there usually is not very much, but after a storm sometimes there can be quite a bit, like at any beach). In a low-tide you can go all the way up to where the cliff-face meets the water and in between the rocks are tidepools and mussels and sometimes the carcass of a crab eaten by a seagull. Sophie loves mussel shells and crab carcasses and will parade them around the beach at any opportunity. And when we leave, hours later, our hair is wind-whipped and our little puppy is so tired she passes out in my lap on the drive home, her little sandy paws twitching, dreaming of all the fun she had on Kehoe Beach with her mommy and daddy. read more

Kehoe Beach was by far my favorite beach during our Point Reyes stay. It's a super scenic drive from where we were staying in Inverness (made even more so by my husband who forgot to read the directions so we made it all the way to the Lighthouse before we realized we missed our turn -- and on that note, no cell service so write down the directions or take a screencap) We got there around 10:30am and there were a handful of cars parked. We leashed all 3 of our dogs and headed down the roughly 1 mile trail to the beach. Like all of the Point Reyes' beaches that allow dogs, Kehoe had several signs noting that dogs are only allowed to the right side of the beach. When we got to the beach, we noticed the other dogs were off leash so let our boys go and headed to the right. What a BREATHTAKING beach! Quite a few fishermen in the surf and other families enjoying the hot day. We set up camp a far ways down from the trail to read and picnic. We played with our dogs in the surf and had a wonderful time. One of our dogs loves to swim and play fetch in the water. We were extra careful to only throw the stick in the surf as you could see how strong the riptide was and there were also quite a few Great White warnings. Around 2:30pm we headed back to the trail -- we noticed a few other people ahead of us stopping and starting and figured they were getting sand out of their shoes, but realized when our dogs starting shrieking that the sand had gotten too hot and there was nowhere for them to get relief. SO, like the others in front of us, we had to carry our 3 dogs -and-picnic gear (worth it, of course!) We gave a heads up to the many other groups with dogs we saw heading towards the beach so important to keep in mind if you're visiting on a hot day with your pooch. We would absolutely come back here again. As others noted, there's lots of room for everyone to enjoy themselves and the beach is beautiful -- you'll definitely want to spend the day! read more

Kehoe beach is a great beach that not many people visit but more people visit than you think. Yes, it is up a long windy road which will discourage the people looking for a shopping mall in the middle of nowhere. Yes you do have to carry your beach gear for a bit. Yes, the surf is something you must watch and not touch. However, it is up a long beautiful drive through beautiful parts of Marin. The short hike to the beach is nice and you can see the cows. It walks along a creek, climbs near some dunes and goes between the dunes and creek. The beach itself is very beautiful and at the first glance seems completely pristine. I really like the beach and it has those nice sand dunes there. Also, there are some interesting rock areas I have yet to explore in the northern part of the beach. From what I heard, you should ignore them unless the tide is very low. The beach is peaceful and quiet. You can put your beach blanket on the beach, lie down and relax. When I was last here, I noticed Kehoe Beach was not as pristine as it looks (but it is apparently getting better by the year and compared to certain Marin County Beaches, no one has ever set foot here.) Why did I notice all the little details? I was here for a fun and productive beach cleanup. I did the cleanup in 2006 and 2007. The first year, I went to the north side of the beach and found only a little bit of litter. The people who went up the creek found all this foam. We got 67 pounds out of the beach. The next year, we found this large rope that took forever to get out from under the sand. We had less trash that year so that's a good sign people are cleaning up after themselves. Overall, this is a fantastic beach because it is quiet, it is (mostly) clean, there are interesting places to explore that I have yet to visit and it is getting cleaner. read more

A very beautiful short trail to the beach. However... We went in early April and the wind was whipping SO hard that I couldn't last two minutes on the beach. So I def suggest looking up the tide chart before you go. We left and decided to drive to the lighthouse. Also frightening windy but what the hay I already drove an hour up here. :)! read more

Kehoe Beach is worthy of being the 100th review I write! The drive is beautiful, although bumpy if you're hauling ass. Apparently we were driving rather fast. The walk down the path is pretty flat and my 2 little dogs were in a hurry, even though they didn't know what was at the other end of the trail. Once we reached the end of the short trail, the view of the beach was glorious. It wasn't windy or crowded. The beach was clean. Almost all of the people on the beach were with their dog, so there was plenty of butt-sniffing going on. And yes, wet dogs like to stand right next to you and shake sand and water all over you. I got some awesome photos for my FaceBook page. There isn't anyplace nearby to purchase water or food, so bring what you need to keep yourself and your four-legged friends happy. One of my dogs (the least athletic one) was so tired that she needed to be carried back to the car. That's the advantage of having small dogs. Just toss them in your picnic basket and you're good to go. It's two days later and the dogs are still tired. A tired dog is a good dog! read more

Kehoe Beach has it all - dramatic cliffs, lots of sandy areas to stretch out a blanket, a stream going into the sea - what more can you ask? Oh, yeah, dogs are allowed on the beach. With my former roommates (including my 'short roommate' otherwise known as my godson) and their four-legged companion, we would visit Kehoe on a regular basis. It's pretty far up Point Reyes and there isn't much around but the ranches, so bring everything you might need (food, water, blanket), but it's worth the drive. Park on the side of the road and hike in a short 1/2 mile (flat) to the beach. Bring a leash as the park regs require it. (Yes for the dog - there are kids on this beach who's parents do not want them to get that kind of education quite yet.) I could wander the waterline at this beach for hours, letting the vagaries of my daily life melt away in the sound of the surf and the feel of firm wet sand under my toes. And occasionally, I'd have to run like hell from that four-legged companion and her short two-legged partner in crime who were bound and determined to shake some good Pacific Ocean all over me. read more

We arrived at this beach parking area where we had to wait for parking 30 minutes, it was n extremely hot day and we thought about leaving a couple times. after we parked I needed to use the restrooms....... composting toilets which are definitely composting!!!! this is a dog beach as to which people bring their dogs to poop & pee everywhere, some pick up the poop and lots leave it on the path in bags. Um Y? Now the poop is in bags so they are like little poop bombs in the heat. Anyhow, my boyfriend & I went swimming & pretty much got heckled out of the water. The local guys kept telling us to go somewhere else as it is to unsafe for us, anyhow our experience was not good. I say go to Huntington beach in southern Cali better!!! read more

Kehoe Beach is absolutely our favorite beach to go to. It is so huge that you feel like there is no one around you and you have the whole beach to yourself. It's dog friendly and on the walk to the beach we usually see an owl in the tree by the road, many beautiful birds and last time we actually saw couple of coyotes. Amazing! read more

Very large beach and not crowded. I've been there twice near sunset. The first time was a Saturday. There were maybe 20-25 people along the whole beach in 3-5 groups and 3 or 4 dogs. Given the size of the beach, the groups easily could've been about 1/4 mile apart, but most were within 1/4 of the entrance to the beach. The second time was an overcast Friday night. Nobody else was there. There are almost no shells on this beach. The keyhole looks like it would be interesting to go through, but the tide was too high to access it when I was there. Near the entrance to the beach, the geography behind the beach is mostly hills/dunes. To the North, there are cliffs that eventually go all the way to the water. To the South, it looks like mostly just sand and dunes/hills. read more

What I love about this beach is the seclusion to let your dogs have fun, but also the respect of other dog owners. If a dog owner has their dogs off leash and sees another dog on leash, they get it, and quickly leashes up their dogs. Maybe you want to bring your not so friendly dog here, cause you're hoping no one else will be there, or just cause it's a beach that allows dogs. But, if a dog is on leash, other owners see what is happening and immediately put their dogs on leash, very respectful, so everyone has a pleasurable experience. Kehoe is probably the nicest low key beach in the Pt. Reyes / Tomales Bay area. It's out toward Pierce Point on the Pacific side. Parking is along thre road. There is an outhouse near the road too. The walk to the beach is about half a mile and the beach itself is expansive. Great spot to hang out in the summer, but not ideal for swimming. Bring a sweater because the marine layer rolls in around afternoon. read more

Perfect hike for our family with a 4 year old and dog. Nice easy hike but not super short. The trail takes you through a beautiful meadow onto a secluded beach that is dog friendly. The kids loved running around and we found some rocks to climb that had sea anemone and mussels. read more
