Got the 11am reservation and initially worried it was too early for oysters. It wasn't. It was perfect. The herb dressing was a bit too powerful on the herbaceous for me but the oysters raw and grilled were delicious. Do yourself a favor and order a variety. Can't wait to go back and sit outside in the sun and with that view! It makes for such a memorable afternoon.

Service here is excellent!!! Their oysters were definitely fresh !!! Such a pretty place to have lunch at! They close at 4pm though ! Get here early if you can !!

Glad to have a reservation for the weekend as it would've been an hour wait! Fyi this location has a smaller menu with less food options but a great stop for oysters from the source! - Dozen oysters split : fresh and delicious! - Barbecued oysters : served fresh off the grill, both the miso and chipotle flavors were great. Ordered side of bread to soak up any remaining butter.

Really can't beat a day out to Marshall and a visit here...oysters are excellent, staff is great and you are literally at the Oyster farm. Unfortunately grilling is no longer a thing but table service is definitely much nicer.. Booking in advance is pretty much mandatory...hard to get a table here for sure..you are literally sitting bay side and if your lucky you'll see the oysters coming in off the boat. Bring warm backup clothes even if good weather is predicted...the wind can come off the bay pretty good.

4.5 Stars -- Where the Bay Meets Brilliance We decided to spend the weekend with our dear friends in Santa Rosa CA. I have been craving for raw oysters and they recommended this place. Freshness overload, plain and simple. Hog Island Oyster Co. delivers the kind of unpretentious excellence that makes you forget the daily grind You sit at rustic picnic tables overlooking the water, but what lands in front of you could rival any white-tablecloth restaurant in the city. Each oyster tastes like the ocean decided to tell you a secret--briny, bright, impossibly fresh. The BBQ oysters are smoky perfection, while the raw platter feels like a masterclass in minimalism. We decided in the chipotle grilled oysters and although I am always partial to raw this came close to changing my mind - it was rich buttery and spicy They don't have a real kitchen so no clam chowders - would have been nice since it was a chilly day. We also got the mussels escabeche and smokes albacore - delicious and subtly seasoned. We went on a Saturday and even though we came early working was a struggle - though worth it. The other challenge is the bathroom situation - not the cleanest A bit pricey but I guess for the quality and where it's at - it's worth it. It's the rare spot where simplicity and sophistication meet quietly, without trying too hard. Nothing feels forced, everything feels right. Come hungry, leave salt-kissed and happy.

We hadn't been to the oyster bar attached to the farm location of Hog Island Oyster for several years, and it looks like they're expanded the space. After going on a tour of the farm, we decided to get some more oysters at the bar. The chipotle butter oysters were piping hot and perfectly seasoned with a sweet earthy flavor. We also ordered a cold cut board and a cheese board for two people. The boards were a good size and we had some leftovers to take home. While the bar had more limited offerings compared to the SF ferry building location, the outdoor seating and views of Tomales Bay and farm are unbeatable.

Decided to come here on a Saturday without reservations and even though we had to wait an hour, it was well worth the wait. Please make a reservation unless you don't mind waiting an hour, ALSO you will get turned away if there is no seating (several people after us got turned away). During our wait, we walked the grounds, explored their general store and sat and talked which was great because there is no service in the area, it gives a chance for people to connect. The hostess was very nice even though it was busy. He was very attentive and even took our order so we can get food even time for the kitchen closing instead of having us wait for a waiter. We ordered the cheeseboard, bourbon butter oysters, and the miso oysters. All were great, although I may skip the miso oysters next time to try some raw ones with their mignonette. Wine was also great. They had a really good selection. This would be a beautiful place to come during the summer since it's right off the water and just the drive there was so scenic. It can get busy there so we parked on the side of the road but from what I can see there is plenty of parking. Lastly, they sell oysters at the general store sooo if you don't want to wait if you didn't make reservations. There's a table right in front of the store and you can shuck away!

    Amanda M.

I wanted to get good quality oysters right from the source since I've had the oysters in SF. They do have a dine in option where you can eat the oysters but there is a wait. I got 2 dozen oysters and shucked them myself. Got the Kumamoto and the sweet water. Flavor profile for both the sweetwater and kumamoto are fresh and salty. Meat was very soft and firm. Definitely a fun activity to do or to enjoy at a picnic near a beach. Warning: Parking is pretty difficult to find. I'll definitely be back here again to grab some oysters if I'm in the area

Make a reservation. Even if it's a random weekday... make the reservation! We drove 2 hours out eat here. Parking lot is VERY small, so we ended up parking down the road and walking. We were very fortunate to be able to get seating after a 20 minute wait, so.... for future reference, make the reservation! I have to say, those grilled oysters changed my life. Bless Hog Island for sharing their BBQ Chipotle Bourbon butter recipe online. I'm waiting to tell my friends this is what I want for my birthday. Everything was fresh, no complaints! It was worth the 2 hour drive and some car sickness.

if you're just picking up please MAKE sure you check your TOTAL BEFORE signing. briefly...went for a drive and stopped by to pick up some s. it got a little busy as i was paying and wanted to be considerate and not take too long paying. MY mistake/error. Didn't know about the "wellness fee" and apparently a 22% tip was automatically picked for me. Yes, I SHOULD HAVE checked before signing. I just find it a little much to even "suggest" a 22% tip automatically for PICK UP. going to have to put a lot of hot sauce, garlic butter, or mignonette just to get the bad taste out . prob won't be back for a long time...if ever. i used to make this place a mandatory stop.

    Lesly M.

Wow, definitely worth the drive. The oysters were fresh and great with their vinegar-ish sauce. Their bread has great sesame taste, nice with butter. The smoked cod dip was good but was kind of salty. Their hot sauce is kind of sweet, we prefer the tapatio. Service is welcoming and kind! This spot faces the water which is nice, can get chilly and cold though so warm up!

Oyster was good both fresh and grilled. Service is pretty good. It was about 40mins wait but it wasn't too bad. The ambiance, service, and oyster are the reason ill be back.

Oysters here are incredibly fresh and flavorful -- some of the best I've ever had. They offer a great deal on oysters to-go, which I'd definitely recommend. Both the raw and BBQ are worth trying; the hogwash pairs perfectly with the oysters' natural salinity. The shareable plates were also excellent, making for a light but satisfying meal. Staff were super friendly. We visited on a reservation-required day -- highly recommended for those traveling from afar, though walk-ins can work if you arrive early. We got there at 11:00 AM on a Sunday and snagged a table just before the place filled up. The location is beautiful, right next to Tomales Bay, and I'll definitely grab oysters to take home next time.

    Grilled oysters were so good!

Ask the Community - Hog Island Oyster

What's the restroom situation for The Boat?

We have two gender neutral restrooms for guests to use - one has the urinal + toilet and the other has the changing table. There are also honey buckets on site if the restroom line is too long.

I have a reservation for the boat. Can we buy bulk oysters and BBQ with that? Or is it just the restaurant?

It is just the restaurant. There is a separate area for buying to-go orders. My understanding is you used to be able to eat on the grounds outside with a to-go order, but not now.

I'm heading up this weekend and wanted to get some oysters and mussels to go so you do that? And do you take pre orders online? Was gonna head up this Sunday

Hi Brian, The Retail window is open 7 days a week 9am-5pm offering live un-shucked shellfish to…

We'll be in the area on Sunday. Since reservations are all booked, do they offer takeout?…

Hi Rob! Yes they do have take out. There was a separate line for takeout. There might also be an online offering system as well but I'm not 100% sure.

Since only take out is available at this time, are the oysters packed in ice? Is hog wash offered to go as well?

Yes. We will pack the oysters on ice. We sell 7lb bags of ice as well. We are offering Hog Wash to go as well.

Are we still able to bring our own alcohol?

Nope! No BYOB during this time.

Since they serve to go order only, is there any picnic area that open around there? Thanks.

The Point Reyes Seashore has a plethora of beaches and parks. Visit the park headquarters at Bear Valley visitor center. Dillon Beach is 10 miles North. Bodega Bay is 20 miles North.

Do I need to bring the glove to cut open the oyster? Or the farm will open them for you?

At this time we are offering Oysters to go. All oysters are Live in the Shell. We sell gloves and Shucking knives. If you want Shucked Oysters, visit us at Tony's Seafood just one mile South of the Farm and we will do all the work for you.

Trying to make a reservation for the Tomales Bay location, post COVID-19 re-opening, and not having any luck. Online reservation system doesn't seem to work, and cannot reach anyone by phone. Any suggestions?

Hi Andrea M. Our outdoor cafe, The Boat Oyster Bar has just reopened for outdoor dining on the weekends, Friday, Saturday + Sunday. You can make reservations through our website, via the OpenTable widget here:…

Do you need to bring your own gloves and shucking knife?

Hog Island provides rental Shucking knives and gloves. They are included in the $5 per person picnic fee along with lemons, hot sauce, and Hog Wash.

How far in advance can I make a reservation?

I make my reservation one week before and got my table.

Is it warm enough to go in January? Do they have heaters?

Yes. They do but I recommend reservations.

    Is it BYOB?

Bring your own booze, bottle, beverage...

Can we bring our dog here?

Yep. A lot of people brought their dogs

What happens if it's raining on the day of my reservation?

The setup is outside. Here is the answer from their website. We are open rain or shine. It's up to you to decide what is too wet or cold for you. Please cancel your…

Do they allow dogs at the picnic tables?

Yes, they do! My friends brought their dog there that day and it was just fine. Enjoy!

Hey guys, has anyone experienced live worms in oyster? It's small and red , are they harmful?

Periodically other sea life can make their way into your oyster. At times there a small bay shrimp that look a lot like a worm or even small millipede-like creatures. The little red worms are not harmful though at times they can be unappetizing,…

While seafood isn't my usual preference, the broth was delicious with a warm heat to it. Next up were the Mushroom à La Grecque, which I found on the sides menu. Simple, but tasty. The Grilled Asparagus could've learned something from the simplicity of the mushroom dish. It's trying to do so much. The crumbled hard-boiled egg and the marcona almonds, which lost most of their crunch. The gremolata wasn't noticeable and the seasonings weren't a garnish as much as a layer atop the vegetables.
