There is nothing like my salon experiences at Keith Kristofer. It feels high end without being stuffy or uppity. I absolutely love the staff and how comfortable I feel upon arrival. Kris absolutely is the best! She listens, she suggests and she walks you through everything that she is doing and why. LOVE HER! The front desk staff is always smiling and helpful and my hairstyle by Kali Erisman is DELICIOUS! She helped me figure out what I wanted (I was open but still not settled) and she was excited, fun, adorable and did a fabulous job. I have been looking for a curly hairstylist for a while and decided to give this salon a try. I am so glad that I did! Sara C. cut my hair and did an amazing job. I usually let my curly hair get really long because when hair stylists cut my hair to a length between shoulder length and chest length, they never layer it correctly and it turns into a triangle. Sara listened to my specifications for my hair and cut it perfectly. The layering is fantastic and my hair feels light and healthy. I also came in with a lot of concerns about my hair products being too heavy but making my hair frizzy. Sara recommended and used two amazing curly hair cleansers on my hair, which I bought after the appointment. The products have worked perfectly so far for keeping my hair clean but not frizzy. I highly recommend this salon, and Sara, for both the amazing hair cut and the amazing product recommendations. I like my hair again!! read more

We love the salon. Kris, Keith and everyone on staff always make us feel welcome. It's professional and they continue to grow and evolve. My husband and I have been going there for several years. We relocated 3 years ago to San Antonio and could've found a new place in the area, but continue to come to the salon. Deanne has been my hair stylist for several years, and I have always had excellent results. I've had different types styles over the years, and she's in tune with what I want. She's both consistent and creative, two characteristics I value very highly. I am in my mid-fifties and I want my hairstyle to express my personality and who I am on the inside - not my physical age. A couple of years ago, I decided to go with short and spunky. Wow - I love it! I can wear it fun and funky or conservative - depending on how the mood strikes me. Amber (aesthetician) and Jackie (manicurist) are equally top notch and do wonderful work. My husband and I have treated each other with gifts of manicures and facials and leave the salon "blissed out." read more

Worst salon experience of my life and I've had a pretty bad one before. PLEASE never go here. I now have some of the most disgusting looking hair I've ever seen. I've been crying nonstop since Kris began this grueling mess of what was supposed to be a simple root touch up. Day one: I come in with my natural dark blonde roots grown out a few inches. Wanted a root touch up. Sounds simple enough right? Apparently not for Kris. After three hours of foils, I left with a discernible stripe of my natural hair color between freshly colored blonde roots and the rest of my blonde hair. It was literally a dark stripe across my entire head, there was absolutely no hiding it. Obviously she missed about an inch strip on every part of the hair. Called in tears asking for it to be fixed. Day two: Arrive at 3:00. Don't get to leave until after 9 with my hair still messed up, but now covered in cheetah print like blotches of varying colors (orange, white, and the original dark natural color). Now there is a white stripe where the dark stripe once was, and an orange stripe above that. I am now resembling a candy cane. ***KRIS OPENLY ADMITS SHE MESSED UP MY HAIR, joking that she "didn't say her prayers last night".*** Day 3: Kris says toning will help blend the rainbow of colors I am now sporting. This, of course, turns out wrong, like every thing she did. After one final blow dry, I express my displeasure at how it turned out and politely ask for a refund for the original service, which was $180. I said I wanted my money back because she obviously wasn't able to fix the mess she created. She refused to talk to me and just started angrily exclaiming "no, no, no, go home, go home!" and walked away, embarrassing me in front of the entire salon. I called my father because I am very shy and meek and I knew it wasn't right that we weren't getting a refund. He tries to ask her for an apology for me and a refund. She, again, doesn't listen, instead she picks up the phone and calls the police. We leave without any yelling, threatening or causing any problems on our side. Folks, I can tell you that this is the first time me or my father have EVER gotten the police called on us. 0/10 Worst experience of my life, definitely 100% regret going. Not sure how she stays in business based on her lack of talent (she literally couldn't do a root touch up) and how she handles a crying, unhappy young client. I now need to find someone fix this ridiculous mess, and in the meantime have to walk around with what is one of the worst dye jobs I've ever seen. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider this a warning and learn from my mistakes. Never go here. read more

Sarah has been cutting and coloring my hair for ... goodness... 7 years? She always ensures that my dark color looks natural. I also have a great mass of thick hair so I am always appreciative of her efforts as I know when she sees me she's in for a workout. I concur with everyones great words for Amber. I've been living in Austin for over a year now. I was never satisfied with any of the stylists that I went to for color or cut. I booked an appointment at Keith Kristofer and had the best experience. The staff could not have been more professional from the time I walked in to the time I left. I booked an appointment with Kris. I always am nervous about trying a new stylist. I wanted something different and was very nervous about the change. She did an amazing job and made me feel comfortable and confident during the process. I will definitely be going back. This has to be the worst most unprofessional ,rudest hair salon i have ever been to in Austin. Kris is incredibly rude and snobby when talking to clients and talks so loud the whole salon can hear her. No customer privacy with her. I scheduled an appt for a color correction and was sitting in the salon for an hour i even signed the agreement for the color correction only to be told after an hour of sitting there that they would not be able to attend me. I drove out an hour to get to the salon. I suggest going elsewhere where you dont waste two hours of your day for nothing. read more

Finding the right hair salon requires a lot of things. Besides identifying a skilled stylist and a comfortable environment, the rapport you build with your stylist and the staff is a huge factor. Let's face it, your hairstyle is a personal decision and being able to communicate well and schedule appointments are part of the overall relationship that keeps you coming back. I'd been going to Keith Kristofer salon periodically for years and found an excellent stylist there about a year ago. She listened and delivered great cuts. Unfortunately, this review is less about the talent than it is about that all important relationship. To show some gratitude for her talent and the service of a desk staffer, I invited them to a holiday party along with many of my friends and local acquaintances - from other businesses I frequent. The party is at a restaurant, not a private residence, and communicated through online invitations. This week, I received a call from the owner of Kris Kristofer salon saying that although I was a long-time client, I was no longer welcome in the salon because they discourage socializing with clients. What a sad commentary on where some people's heads are at - where inviting someone who typically gets little recognition for a good job to a nice holiday party becomes misconstrued as something self-aggrandizing. (Response to Owner Response) ... "Fire a customer?" Just listen to that sense of self-importance... Tells you all you need to know about this crew. And I stand by my comment "Go F Yourself" for characterizing an innocent gesture like a party invitation as something untoward. Get a grip and off your high horses. read more

I also had issues with color from an Aveda salon in town, don't get me wrong they were great with the high-lights and low lights but when it came to making my blonde highlighted hair brunette there were major issues. I discovered Keith Kristofer via Yelp after 4 tries of the brunette shades at Aveda. Kris made me feel like she completely understood my concerns and what needed to be done. She got me in as soon as possible and was very thorough about what she was putting on my hair and why. I felt totally comfortable and felt like my hair was in good hands that wanted it to be as healthy as possible. At the end of the visit my hair ended up a little darker than I had hoped ( I didn't realize the swatch I liked would be so much darker al over my head)and I still had some warm tones that I was hoping to get rid of. I had a little melt down and Kris was super sweet. She even arranged a follow up appointment with Katherine and worked with me to make sure that I was content. Overall, it is a wonderful salon. The people there really know their stuff and how to treat your hair to not only make it look good but keep it healthy as well. I will be back for sure. read more

I started going to this salon back in '08. Shannon was my colorist and always did an amazing job. I'm a brunette by nature, but I stay blonde with super long hair. It is extremely challenging to find someone who is talented and skilled enough to always make that look natural and beautiful. I remember going through 3 or 4 places before I found them, and what a relief! I could tell right off the bat that Kris and Keith make sure the team are trained professionals, and all trained the same way. Also seems they have to meet a certain standard to be on the floor taking clients. Shannon moved away about the time I moved away. Since then I have made an insane drive to Dallas from wherever I lived for my talented friend who has been mastering color for 20 years. From time to time I would find myself visiting Austin in need of a haircut or my roots were too insane to live with any longer, and always knew I could go to Keith Kristofer and any one of these talented girls would do it up right. Now I've moved back, and have the honor of getting Sarah as my colorist, and Lo for my cut. They both did an amazing job, as well as Emma (went in for a base break). Super talented and sweet. If you're looking for a place where you never have to worry about the level of skill and professionalism, especially if your hair color choices are challenging or high maintenance and you're picky like me, go here! I cannot say enough good things about this salon and how the treated my daughter and I! The following is the whole long story--because it shows how they went above and beyond -- but if you don't feel like reading, please know that they gave us a beautiful result for a reasonable amount of money and went out of their way to help my daughter fix a hair disaster with minimal notice. The salon owner, Kris, made it all happen, and she and Emma, one of the colorists, spent hours on my daughter's hair. My daughter has been dying her light brown hair a darker shade of brown using over-the-counter hair dye for about a year and decided she wanted to go very light, preferably silver. She had saved a bunch of money for this purpose but as we looked into it, we were having trouble getting reasonable quotes, let alone firm ones -- one well-reviewed salon quoted her 4 appointments at a cost of $330 each, and two others said the color removal alone would be somewhere between $80 and $350. All of this may be reasonable, but the lack of a solution that worked for her budget and vision resulted in her trying to remove the color herself (gulp). The result was a calico-brindle hodge podge of pale blond, various shades of orange and brown...on the last Friday night of spring break. After doing a lot of research on yelp, I had a shortlist of three salons known for effective color correction to call for a Saturday appointment (none of them were open Sunday). Keith Kristofer was top on my list based on the fabulous philosophy/approach outlined on the web....but I another of my options opened at 9 am instead of 10 and said they could get her in that afternoon. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I told them it was for a color correction to go lighter, they only blocked one two-hour appointment. The colorist we met with was great, but could not come up with a solution that she had time for...so we found ourselves with no plan at 3 pm on Saturday. Here's where Keith Kristofer salon came to the rescue....I first called and gave the whole story again and they asked me to send pictures as well as asked questions. We started driving over and they clarified that they could do the color correction, but not go lighter.....and on the way, another child had an emergency need, so I had to drop my daughter and race off to resolve it. When I got back I found out that initially they had not been able to meet what my daughter had wanted (which made sense given the time constraint and that they wanted her to be happy), but essentially the salon owner, Kris, felt so bad about it that she decided to fix it herself with the help of another colorist, Emma. The two of them worked on my daughter's hair for hours---first removing the remaining patches of dye, toning it all over, deep-conditioning it to help restore the hair, and then applying a light color gloss so that my daughter would look good between that day and when she came back to finish lightening it up. Kris explained all the steps to us, as well as the choices, b/c we could have chosen to color it with a semi-permanent or darker color if we did not want to return quickly. They ended up staying past the closing time and I'm pretty sure they discounted us b/c the overall price was very reasonable given everything they did. Amber has been waxing, tweezing and shaping my eyebrows for about four years now. When I first came in, I had plucked my eyebrows to death and as a result they were asymmetrical, too thin, etc. After letting them grow out and having Amber shape them to perfection upon a second visit, I have always loved the way she has made my eyebrows compliment my facial features. Amber is obviously experienced with a knack for precisely knowing how to shape your eyebrows to compliment your particular facial features. I have never been left running out of the salon covering my face because my eyebrows were uneven, over plucked, etc. She is also very personable and maintains a very clean space. This review is specifically for stylist Michelle Vance. Michelle has been coloring and cutting my hair for a few years now and I couldn't be happier. In addition to working at Keith Kristofer, Michelle is an award winning colorist, an educator and guest artist for Goldwell, which means she travels the country teaching others in the industry. So basically, she is an expert in her field. I am a redhead and finding the right colorist can be tricky. Michelle is excellent at coloring red hair. I was never able to get the right shade of red before Michelle and had pretty much given up. Now, under Michelle's care, I have the prettiest shade of coppery red. People stop me regularly to compliment and comment on my hair color and I always give all the credit to Michelle. She has also helped me tame my frizzy, thick dry hair by Introducing me to keratin treatments that last months and leave my hair frizz free, silky and smooth. She is fantastic with her cuts as well. She really works with the characteristics of my hair to give me the best look for me and she is conservative in how much she cuts off. So basically what I'm saying is that Michelle is the total package. Hair is her art form and Michelle definitely sees herself as an artist, who puts her heart, creativity and skill into each client that she works on. I am so glad that I have found her and could not recommend her more highly. She is just truly one of the best in the business. read more

I woke up this morning feeling gross and hot and decided some of my hair had to go!! I asked a coworker what salons were around here and she suggested Keith Kristofer. I have been making the rounds of salons around Austin for about a year. The others weren't bad exactly, but there was always something that wasn't right. The person was annoying, they didn't listen to me, the haircut was just so-so. So what a wonderful treat to finally get the attention I deserve! At lunch today I had an appt with Shannon. She was very pleasant, friendly without being too chatty and she not only listened, she confirmed (!) that she understood what I was getting at. She communicated throughout the whole cut asking what I wanted and when I would say "do what you think is best", she'd say in detail what she was going to do. She took it slow so she wouldn't take too much off and explained to me what she was doing when she was layering (I probably had a horrified look on my face or something). She talked to me about product but wasn't pushy and even recommended certain brands her salon didn't even carry. The receptionists were extremely friendly and funny and I felt very welcome and comfortable there. So...at long last I think I might have found my stylist! hooray! read more

I cannot begin to explain the phonomenal job Amber did on my eyebrows. My brows have always been thick brown catapillers with no arch. All throughout high school my mom would never let me pluck them because she thought they looked like Brooke Shields. But really, how many people actually look like Brooke Shields? I think the Groucho Marx fuzzy eyebrow look should fully account for the fact I dated a total of 2 people thoughout those dark days. Before I went in to Keith Kristofer Salon for a brow shaping, I thought I could possibly need something more extreme, like a surgical brow lift or a brow tattoo. I reasoned I would try to get my brows professionally shaped before I flew off the deep end. Amber spent at least 40 minutes plucking, waxing, and basically performing her magic. My eyebrows are absolutely beautiful. I feel like a super model! I hesitated to even write this review because I selfishly want Amber all to myself, but I am so proud of my new arches, I have to share my happy news with the world! read more

Keith Kristofer Salon is a awesome salon for cutting and coloring hair. I live in Houston but I found this salon when I was working in Austin a lot. Now, I drive from Houston to Austin just to have my hair highlighted and cut here. I've tried so many salons in Houston and even Europe when I lived there and could never find anyone who could turn my dark brown hair to light blonde exactly the way I wanted it to look. They are priced as much as other high end salons but my stylist Sara really knows what she's doing and she has a great personality too. At my first appointment with Sara, she spent a lot of time talking with me to find out exactly wanted with my color and cut and she explained to me what she would do to achieve the look I wanted. Sara listened to my trials and tribulations with my hair and came up with a solution that's worked perfectly for my hair for the past 2 years. Her coloring knowledge is exceptional. She understands that everyone's hair is unique and coloring one way may not work the same way for another person's hair. She also understands that the number one priority for a customer being there is doing their hair, not chit chatting or gossiping like other stylists I've seen at other salons in the past. Sara pays incredible detail to the task of doing my hair, more than any other stylist I've been to, and it impresses me at every appointment I have with her. She hasn't slacked off after time, which a lot of stylist do when you become a regular customer (I hate that). The salon also uses high end haircare products like Kerastase, Shiseido, and Aquage. I use Kerastase at home so it's important for me that the salon I go to use it too (just my personal preference). I'm not sure how I'll find a stylist and salon like this one if I ever moved away from Texas again! read more

I moved to Austin a little over a year ago, from Los Angeles---and prior to that was in Dallas for years. I had a wonderful colorist while in Dallas--moving to L.A. I could NEVER find the right person for me. Formulas always changed when I would go back and more. It was very frustrating. After moving to Austin almost a year ago, I did my research and found the reviews on Keith Kristofer Salon and Spa to be highly favorable. And I was led to Cassie, who now does my color--and I have to say, it's reminiscent of having one of the top colorists in Dallas work on me for years while I was doing a lot of on camera work for television. Cassie's attention to detail is incredible. I feel she really listened to what I wanted and supported the direction I wanted to go. Hey, I'm a dark brunette and want to be blonde with copper low lights. Cassie has done it! Wonderful experience. And Trent, her assistant the last time I was in, was delightful. 5 stars for Keith Kristofer Salon and Spa! I'm so happy I've found you! UPDATE: I also was introduced a few weeks ago at this salon, to an outstanding hair stylist/hair cutter, who is "fresh in" from Beverly Hills. Sascha's obviously seasoned skills are extraordinary. I'm very selective and my hair is thick, wavy and doesn't "behave" very well if someone doesn't know what they are doing. She does. Don't let her speed fool you either. Lesson here is that all these nice ratings may not be the actual picture of their performance. Seems like they removed my comments after I wouldn't let them "try again" on my bad haircut. Wow, where do I even begin! KK Salon has been my saving grace! I started going there in 2007 to Deanne for a botched color job that left my hair damaged and barely clinging to life. She corrected the color and revitalized my over-processed hair. I've been a loyal client to Deanne ever since and truly value her expertise. She is so talented and very very good at what she does. Over the years, we've tried all kinds of new things and I'm always happy with the results. Last year I decided to cut off 13 inches and she gave me the best haircut I've ever gotten. My hair color always looks great and is never over-processed or damaged. Their front desk staff is wonderful as well. They never overbook clients and I never feel rushed. Going to KK Salon is really a treat and I feel like a priority every time. Deanne did my hair for my wedding three years ago and it was fabulous.
