As a four year resident, they tried to charge me $650 for a random person leaving a couch on the curb as a fine and removal fee even thought it WASN'T ME WHO PUT IT THERE OR MY COUCH. The first time our lease was sent to us, it had multiple typos and the cost for water had two different values in different parts of the document. When we moved in, the apartment was very dirty and still had some furniture in it (chairs and a bed frame) as well as multiple bags of trash on the porch. We had to vacuum four times before we finally got all the cat hair out of our apartment that doesn't allow pets. Pipes had to be replaced that ran through our bedroom wall, so naturally they came, tore the wall to shreds, replaced the pipes, then left the wall completely open. It only got fixed after multiple emails begging for someone to fix it, and several weeks later, that wall still hasn't been painted to match the rest of the room. Maintenance workers have on multiple occasions showed up unannounced to do work. Just recently I came home to my toilet completely taken apart with no knowledge of what happened or if it could even be used. When I called the company they said they weren't sure what happened. Our fridge light doesn't work, our screen door is off the track, our bathroom had a moldy ceiling when we moved in, and we still have an unpainted bedroom wall. All of this and we've only lived here for three months so far. read more

I left a review of this awful company a while ago but it seems it's mysteriously disappeared...so I'll do it again! This is the worst realty company in the Pittsburgh area. You're better off in a homeless shelter than renting from these people. If I could give 0 stars, I would, because that's what they deserve. Their listings are in terrible quality and ridiculously overpriced. It takes days or even weeks to get ahold of anyone to fix maintenance issues. Seemingly everyone that you talk to from this company is rude and condescending at all times. Their billing system is grossly unprofessional, they're often late with sending bills and expect their tenants to pick up the late fees. Absolutely awful management. Literally the definition of an Oakland slumlord. No chance on getting your deposit back. They even tried to get one of my roommates to pay a penalty fee for a key which I had turned in. This company is very dishonest. I was at 764 Hazelwood Ave. And the apartment has been like a revolving door. When I moved in there, there were 3 other girls. Each of us basically renting and sharing the apt. They have not followed any of the guidelines of reality business. They are not returning deposits and because they have not been in there for approximately 8 years me and two other girls have endured a horrible condition, threatening staff and roommates and their workers just walking in whenever they wanted. Horrible horrible company. I feel sorry for the actual owner of the home. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Myself have had to get a attorney involved. They need to be shut down!!! read more

These guys were less than accommodating. On many occasions they showed my house without notifying us. Twice when someone was in the shower. Any time I would call them I was spoken down to and at times was insulted. We had a mold issue on the shower that I called on four times and it was never fixed. The access door to the pipes was in my closet and the mold was so bad that it made me sick. Once we moved out, we got well under half of our security deposit back for bogus charges but since we didn't take before and after pictures, we had no way to fight it. These guys are extremely unprofessional and all they want is your money. I would not recommend my worst enemy to rent from these people. If you do, make sure to take tons of pictures and document every scratch and dent in that place so that you have a way to contest the charge, because it's inevitable. read more

I was just berated and insulted on the phone for not calling them immediately about a service I need done. I had a great experience with this company my first year or so as a tenant but lately the customer service has been trash and they genuinely DO NOT CARE about their tenants or our safety at all. One winter they redid our parking lot and forced us all to park in a shopping center and WALK home from there. Supposed to take 6 weeks, turned into 6 MONTHS allegedly because they wouldn't pay the workers. I have to call repeatedly every time I need service and many of the calls go completely ignored, evidenced by the fact that they never have any record of ANY of my previous calls. They don't keep adequate records for anything but they have no problem raising your rent every year or tacking on other new charges. They're cheap, yes, but remember most things cost less for a reason and clearly the reason is they don't pay anyone enough to care about the jobs they're doing. read more

Mike Kelly is the scum of the earth. Our heat in our apartment went out and he avoided my call for 4 days claiming the plumber wouldn't call him back, but in realty he never called him. The only way to get Mike to actually fix the repairs was to report him to the department of health and contact a lawyer. He is only motivated by losing money, not maintaining livable environment for his tenants. When speaking to the intake woman at the department of health, I told her that I was renting from MJ Kelly and she immediately started laughing. She told me she rented from Mike Kelly in college and they were robbed through a broken window. Mike Kelly refused to make the repairs and they were robbed a second time. He has a pattern of not making proper repairs and avoiding any responsibility. Based on the comments below the two of us are not the only ones Mike Kelly has screwed over. read more

One of my closest friends is moving to Pittsburgh, and drove to a bunch of places to find her an apartment. After looking at a series of really terrible places in the morning, we saw a couple of nice places managed by MJ Kelly. (Which just rented a very nice apartment to someone at my office.) She didn't end up selecting an MJ Kelly apartment, but their agent Matt was very helpful in going through their entire list of housing stock and helping pick out which of their listings fit what she really wanted. Both of his choices were nice and reasonably priced apartments. He was really a pleasure to work with. We would strongly recommend calling and asking specifically for him. read more

We are working professionals in the area, not students like many of his renters. Do not rent with Mj Kelly. The landlords who sign with him also need to reconsider. We lived with a gas stove where the burners did not all work, faucets that dripped both at the nozzle and base 24/7, and a tube that never drained. This was all from day one of rental, and had not been fixed in the two years staying there. We sent every check for rent and utilities on time every month. MJ Kelly lost about 6 of our checks we sent over the last 2 years. We then had to resend a new check for the same bill. Due to poor maintenance of the property the ceiling had multiple leaks everywhere. At one point a 3x2 portion of the ceiling collapsed and was not replaced. We lived with the large hole in the ceiling for over 4 months up until we moved out. Upon moving out we scrubbed everything, had the carpet cleaned, and had the place looking better then move in (which was not a hard feat to accomplish). They kept 25% of the deposit due to insufficient carpet cleaning. Basically if you rent with them don't except things to be repaired properly, don't expect your deposit back, expect high yearly increases in rental price, and expect to deal with headaches due to very poor management. read more

We kept our place in great condition expecting to get most of our deposit back. We were given $330 out of a possible $1600 with MJ Kelly citing the 'filthy' conditions of the apartment. After checking with current tenants I found out most of the itemized fixes were not done by MJ Kelly. This on top of our heat going out twice in the winter, our refrigerator being outdated (no side shelves), the doorknob to the stairwell malfunctioning, and the air conditioning not working properly on several occasions. Here is my review. I paid my $50 for a rental application on August 12, 2019 for an apartment. I received an alert from Credit Karma on 8/13/2019 that MJ Kelly Realty checked my credit. On 8/16/19 i called to follow up on my rental application. They told me the person reviewing the rental applications had not got to mine because "he was too busy." On 8/20/19 they took the apartment I applied for off all the rental websites. So I called the office to follow up on my application a second time. After not being able to find my application, i got a return call at 6pm in the evening that my application was still being reviewed. They also told me the unit I applied for was still available and I would hear from them in a day or two. I heard nothing. I finally called back on a Saturday 8/24/19 only to have them tell me they denied my application because of my credit which they ran on 8/13/19. So now, after nearly two weeks of a rental application process which takes most other realty companies 24 to 48 hours, i have 5 days to find a new apartment or be homeless. Rent from another company. It's not worth using MJ Kelly. read more

I lived at 6633 saltsburg rd. I officially moved out July 30, 2016. There is currently an issue with bed bugs and all of the tenants were not informed by M.J. Kelly realty. I know this because I was a tenant and found out through a casual conversation with one of the other tenants who found them in his place. I was moving out at the time but while unpacking I found a bed bug in one of my bags......just one of many issues I had with this company. There was a fire in the building and none of the alarms worked (the tenants went banging on each other's doors to try to get everyone out after they attempted to pull the alarms in the hallways). The owner Mike Kelly described it as a "small fire" but the power was out for several hours and the fire department was called. In my opinion most big fires start out as small fires (thank goodness for the fire department). I called the realty office to complain about this and one of the people working there told me that the alarms didn't work because the power went out....to me this is not a valid excuse. There are lots of pets living in the building (I know of at least 3 people who have called in to complain). If you have allergies please beware. Mike pretends to be surprised when someone complains about it. I moved out early because I couldn't take it anymore and asked them to rent out the place as soon as possible (they said they would) but I they did not even attempt to rent it early. Also if you complain about anything or post a bad review while still under the lease Mike threatens to evict you. He was very condasending and rude in almost every conversation I had with him. He lies a lot, so I suggest recording your conversations with him or handling everything over email so you can have a record of every thing. I regret not listening to the reviews I read online before I move into that property and that I stayed as long as I did. read more

It took several months for them to fix a patio door that had a 2" gap in it, allowing for bugs to get in. While we were living in the apartment, I filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau because our door hadn't been fixed in months. A couple days later I received a phone call from the property manager, Mike, asking if I wanted to be evicted; because of the complaint I submitted and posting poor reviews on websites Mike threatened to evict me. Being fearful that I would have nowhere to live I withdrew the claim and posted excellent reviews for him, now that we're finally free, I feel safe enough to tell the truth. After the contract expired and we moved out, we received a bill for damages for just under $1,000. We demanded to see the damages and upon doing a walk-through, none could be found. Upon leaving the apartment, which now had a new resident, Mike said we'd be getting something from him in the mail. My mother, who co-signed the lease for me asked what we could be expecting and Mike didn't raise his voice, he screamed MONEY MONEY MONEY! My wife is currently trying to get her apartment rented out because we bought our own house. I do not live in the apartment but I have been in the apartment. It is a nice apartment but we have had nothing but problems with this company. We found are own person to take over our lease and they are denying her because her credit isn't good enough, I don't know why her credit should matter because she isn't starting her own lease she is still under my wife's therefore they shouldn't need to have her credit score at all. The lady trying to rent the apartment has asked to talk to Mike several times and has tried to get ahold of the company many times this past week and all she has gotten was to talk to a lady named Kathy who was of no help. This company is terrible and by far the worst me or my wife has ever had to deal with. They are all about money and don't care about anyone in their rentals. read more

By far the worst landlord I have ever rented from. It is rare that they answer calls or emails and when they do they are extremely rude. We had multiple things around the apartment break since everything is so old and outdated. This wouldn't be a big deal to us but after telling them multiple times, things never get fixed. We had a 5ft hole long in our ceiling for months that they refused to fix! The hole was from the constant leaking of the roof which we told them about months before and they never did anything about. Finally after this nightmare we are leaving the apartment (which we made cleaner than when we moved in) and they won't give us our deposit back for "carpet cleaning". We had even followed the lease and rented a cleaner to clean it and also had a walk through with somewhere who worked there prior to leaving, which the guy marked "good" on the list, they still insisted on charging us!
