PITTSBURGH STUDENTS PLEASE READ: If I could give a negative rating I would! I rented from this company for 2 years while I attended The University of Pittsburgh and nothing about it was pleasant at all. From issues with move in (being promised an earlier move in date via email from Chris Race to receiving a nasty phone call from Tom L after asking about it and then making same day demands about turning utilities on weeks before move in... and harassing me on the phone to get my parents involved when I am a legal adult), to issues living in the apartment, to issues with the security deposit moving out (refusing to honor a court order and refusing to have a lawyer look at it!), plus so much more. Throughout this entire experience, I mainly dealt with Tom L who works at the Pittsburgh, PA office. Beware he is a very RUDE, and HOT HEADED man to deal with and I am genuinely surprised he hasn't been fired yet! I have had many experiences with him screaming at me over the phone and he is NOT PROFESSIONAL AT ALL in any manner (plus he has absolutely no respect for young adults). Considering most of their Pittsburgh rentals are college students in the Oakland area, I genuinely fear for the other young adults (especially women) who have to encounter this man and company, because all they do is harass, bully, and take full advantage of you, and I know I am not alone in my experience. They have completely traumatized me from renting and I will never rent from a company like them again! All this company wants from you is more money and they do some VERY shady things to get more out of you!! They are very demanding about things that are not completely legal and seem to make up their own rules as they go that are outside of the lease agreement. I am so glad I am out of my lease but am sure I will be charged for every little extra thing that they can think of for cleaning that I NEVER SIGNED ANY AGREEMENT TO and is NOT in my lease, as they also do not have a good track record with giving people back their security deposits or will hold them!! I was in the process of moving out of one of their properties but still had furniture, some valuable tools and a $300 vacuum. My townhouse was locked and secure. All of my stuff was stolen. I asked for it back thinking maybe they thought I moved out and removed the items that were left there. I had to go into the office to talk with someone. When I got there they told me that yes, there had been maintenance people in the townhouse but they don't need tools or a vacuum. It was probably $1500 with it stuff. Then he said he doesn't know what people I associate with and they probably came into my townhouse and stole it. Even though it was locked and I had the only key. This is the ONLY place I've ever had this type of experience with. RENT FROM THEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. Apart from providing a property that was filthy and not up to code, when my daughter's lease ended, they withheld $175 of her security deposit due to lawn care. Everything they instructed us to do was followed, and we provided pictures to prove it. We were told by 2 different "supervisors" that it was a misunderstanding and a full refund would be given. I would warn anyone who wants to Rent from John CR Kelly Realty that they are liars, horrible communicators, and are nothing but money hungry. They do not care about their properties or tenants. I lived in one of their Townhomes in Plum for 5 years and it was a living hell. The best thing I ever did was to move. The reason for the bad review is twofold: 1) Security: I live at their 1860 Brett St. Pittsburgh apartment and dispite reporting four (4) thefts of deliveries confirmed by tracking numbers, they refuse to put in a security camera in the entry hallway of the building. 2) Contract: They ONLY do twelve (12) month contracts - so following your initial twelve month contract, you are forced to sign another twelve month contract and they enforce it whether you actually sign it or not! So regardless of your reason for wanting to move, they will insist you are responsible for the completion of the contract and will refuse to list or show your apartment unless you pay them a non-refundable fee to do so that is equivalent to one months rent (so in my case $655.) :( It's basically extortion and they don't care ... even if you are a good tenant like me who lived there over two and a half years and paid rent on time, they don't care. So takeaway is beware of your contract because it autorenews for the same term regardless if you re-sign it or not. read more

!!!!!!Do Not Rent With JCR Kelly!!!!!! They are the definition of slum lords. I lived in a JCR Kelly owned house on Chesterfield for 2 years 2018-20. We had issues since day one. They did not clean the house prior to move in, though they said they would. There were multiple safety issues with the house, including the steep front steps that crumbled when you walked on them leading to at least one injury. JCR Kelly refused to fix the steps and other safety concerns until my roommates and I got the city housing authority involved. The house was so unsafe the city inspectors condemned the house. Even after the house was condemned JCR Kelly took three months to fix the multiple issues. However they still did not fix the dangerous front steps. When we moved out (after all the renovations they did) the house was infested with millipedes, the roof has multiple leaks, the basement flooded almost every time it rained, and the front steps were a pile of loose concrete. My roommates and I also discovered the water bill they were sending us (over $500 every 3 months) did not match the water meter number in our basement. When we called the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer authority they had no idea what was going on and told us JCR Kelly was not on the deed for the house or on the water bill. I know of many different JCR Kelly renters that have been f***ed over by them. Just ask around, you are bound to hear some crazy stories. JCR Kelly rents to low income students and workers knowing that they cannot afford the legal fees they would need to pay to sue them. They actively leach as much money from their tenants with high rents and utility bills while spending little to no money on maintenance and up keep. read more

I am/was slated to become a tenant at one of their Pittsburgh properties as of Aug 1st, 2022. We have paid them a deposit of 2 months' rent, as well as a pet fee for the cat. To this end I have been engaged in correspondence over the past two days with one of the representatives, Tom Loughran, to facilitate the logistics of my move -- this is important because I'm a postal worker and it's difficult to get time away from work. Tom wanted my roommate and I to pay for electricity on our unit starting July 26th so that this company could clean up the apartment on our dime. We would be granted access/keys at 4 pm on the 1st. This is per an email I have with him post asking for clarifications. Upon my stating that cleaning the apartment was a landlord's requirement under law and not something I was responsible for and thus would not be paying for - and that I would have electricity on for the 1st - he then CALLED my roommate to say that he would dissolve our lease because I was being 'combative' and 'making demands' of him. No demands were being made of this man. Nor was I being combative. I used firm language, definite articles, and spoke to him man-to-man rather than serf-to-master. This challenged him so much that he decided to retaliate by threatening to dissolve the lease - but apparently, he felt too threatened by either my knowledge of the legal system or just with being called out on his BS that he didn't bother calling ME, but my roommate instead. My roommate is much more soft-spoken than I am and was also tired after working a double. TL;DR this company uses extortionist, illegal retaliation tactics in the hopes that only the most desperate of people will kowtow to their belligerence because they have no other options. 0/10 don't rent from these people unless you want to be treated poorly for standing up for your rights OR you have the cash to pay for a lawyer. :) read more

Everything as far as rent, contracts, etc has been easy and often through the app, which saves the hassle of cutting checks each month and scanning and signing tons of documents. I have had 6 landlords in 3 different states and two different countries. To this day, this is still the least reputable and professional company. My favorite part was when we moved out and no one gave us any of our security deposit back and did not provide a written explanation as to why... which is technically ILLEGAL. "After termination the lease or upon surrender of the lease and acceptance by the landlord of the leasehold premises, a landlord must provide a tenant with a written list of any damages to the leasehold premises for which the landlord claims the tenant is liable. Delivery of the list shall be accompanied by payment of the difference between any sum deposited in escrow, including any unpaid interest thereon, for the payment of damages to the leasehold premises and the actual amount of damages to the leasehold premises caused by the tenant. See 68 P.S. §250.512." Don't do business with them. You deserve better. read more

I was late paying my last month's rent while I was no longer living there but still on the lease (just got out of college, living during COVID-19 so you think they would be understanding), and they went in without my permission and removed some of my furniture before my lease ended!! Problems since Day 1. Our air vents have not been cleaned for so long that I couldn't get the vent covers off because they have been painted over so many times. Please see pictures. Our toilet has not been working for months and has not been fixed, our deck isn't properly secured to the ground and is relying on a failing retainer wall to hold it up, and parts of our first floor feel like they are falling in. The floor in the kitchen is not level and I can't cook properly because all the oils and juices run to one side of the pan. We had huge dead limbs from trees fall on our cars and dent them because they didn't properly prune. Their solution... park your car in the garage. We have 3 cars and a 1 car garage... not going to work. This company is TERRIBLE and I would never recommend using them. read more

Despite all the horrible reviews I read here on Yelp and other review sites, my experience with John C R Kelly has been great. I rent an 2 br apt with a roommate from them in a very nice location in Shadyside, the rent of the apartment is so reasonable compared to other 5 places I looked at. The apartment and the carpet is stainless when we first moved in, we are so impressed. The building is pretty nicely maintained, and things got fixed usually within 48 hours everytime we report a problem. There were a few times we forgot and sent them rent money a few days to even two weeks late, and they are not picky about it at all. Overall my roommate and I really enjoyed the apartment and we really liked John C R Kelly, I don't understand why there are so many 1 star reviews, I guess people only write reviews to complain once they are really unsatisfied so you don't hear from the satisfied tenants often. Compared to my other friends' experience with other big agencies such as Meyers or Lobos, I definitely feeI lucky that I rent from John C R Kelly. The only complain I can think of is that the company is not up to the latest technology, their website looks 1990s-ish and you can't pay your rent online. You'll have to mail the check to them or drop off at the office, but that's not too much of a issue for us. read more

If I could give them 0 stars I would. If you have Brian Kelly as a landlord, well good luck to you. Throughout the entirety of the lease, he was almost impossible to reach and anytime there was a problem with 25+ years old appliances he would try and blame it on us. We repeatedly tried to email him about getting the water put in our name or at least him forward us the bills because we never got any. Every three months we got a 10 day shut off notice that we were about to lose water. When the time came to try and get our security deposit back he blatantly lied about the state of the house to keep it all. The house was cleaned, everything was out, and the bathrooms looked better than when we moved in. However, apparently by the time he got there there was an upside down jelly jar without a lid in the cabinets, the toilets were so dirty they were almost replaced, and "the house hadn't been cleaned in a year". Seriously, if you want to try your luck with this guy you'll have to resign yourself to someone that 100% couldn't care less and you might as well kiss your deposit goodbye. We moved out for this year and in 2 weeks our new landlord has already proved himself to be far better even despite the low bar that Brian Kelly has set. read more

Living with JCR Kelly was literal hell. We rented a 3 bedroom on Chesterfield that was genuinely not safe to live in. We had local officials come by and they said the place should be condemned. They refused to fix anything in the house until we threatened to sue them. Maybe just our representative Barbara was the problem but I doubt it. We have another friend who used to live with JCR until they raised the rent so high (in a place that was just as bad as ours) that they had to move. We documented all of our correspondence with them and they would lie and said we never told them about issues such as the oven not working, the doors being broken, the stairs being unsafe, toxic mold and paint in the basement etc. Now we are challenging them because they are overcharging us for water bills, up to $550 for three months. Took three days to fix a toilet that just needed a chain replacement because they didn't believe me when I said the chain needed replaced. Living in one of their buildings caused me so much stress. They make their money by renting unlivable buildings to poor people and college students. Do not rent through Kelly Realty. Initially, the place was not cleaned prior to move in even though they said it would be. There was cat hair everywhere which triggered my allergies. During the time we lived in the apartment, there were several maintenance issues they left ignored. The space is so old the doors do not close, paint is chipping from the walls, there is mold in the bathroom and kitchen, and overall it feels very unsafe to live here. As a college sophomore, me and two other girls signed a lease under John c r realty. What an horrible mistake, for many reasons. First, they are incredibly rude and unhelpful, especially seeing we were all 19/20 year old college students living on our own for the first time, which is the majority of the demographic they serve. Not only did they ignore most maintenance requests and belittle you on the phone about the reality of the problems, they would send in random contractors not apart of the company with little heads up. In a college apartment with three young girls, that's completely unacceptable- it is dangerous, incredibly inconsiderate, and scary. On top of that, our specific landlord came in one day, an above 50 year old man, and screamed at my 20 year old roommate about trash. I am not exaggerating- he yelled at her because she tried to explain something to him. Unlucky for us, this wasn't the first and only time. He would continue to do so- he called us, left rude messages, etc. I don't know what kind of old man gets off at yelling at young girls, but he sure is one of them. There were cockroaches, rats, mice, etc. in the house that we brought up that was also promptly ignored that we could've and should've reported to Allegheny public heath. If you are a parent, student, or just your average person looking for housing in Oakland, stay away from this company at all costs. We've had a very good experience living in a John C.R. Kelly unit. We're in a two-bedroom apartment in Oakland, and while the rent was slightly higher than our past rent was, the unit is really great and in far better condition than other places I've lived in Oakland, so it's absolutely worth it. All maintenance issues that we've called in have been handled promptly and professionally, which has been a breath of fresh air compared to past landlords. Their offices are here in Oakland, so you can just drop off rent checks there, which is really convenient. Everyone we've encountered from John C.R. Kelly has been great and extremely friendly (you'll probably end up knowing at least a couple of them on a first-name basis), and given past experiences, I would DEFINITELY recommend them over many of the other landlords in the Oakland area. read more

I contacted Tom about this, but he said they only touch up paint and clean carpets, yet they expect the apartment to be spotless when you move out. It was too late for me to back out because I had already signed my lease. Emailed them a couple of times during my stay and they're very unfriendly. Called to have A/C fixed (leaking water & freezing up) told me that it was my fault A/C was leaking - I had too much furniture in the townhouse ??? Could understand if I had all the registers blocked, right?? Every time I call for something it's either never done, have to call numerous times, I get attitude, or it just does not get done. The WORST realtors we have ever rented from. Where do I begin? Bring your cleaning supplies on move-in day because the apartments are not cleaned between tenants. Our unit was filthy! If only I knew how to install rugs..our carpet had/has black soot on it that does not vacuum or clean up. The rotten wood in the bathroom was painted over so it disintegrated under my sponge when I cleaned it, exposed black rot con't to fall on floor around shower. The toilet seat was crushed, the sink was clogged.The tiny little oven looks like it's from the 1920's.. a black nightmare when you look inside it. Somehow our unit passed the Kelly inspection routine. Don't bother to call their office, they are very unfriendly. When they promise to do something it's lip service only. I so agree with the previous review...is it possible to give negative "stars"? I, too, dealt with the odious Candace and was threatened and basically "dissed" by these horrible people. I can only assume that the owner of this real estate company sets the tone of the treatment of tenants and Mr. Kelly and his minions are just rude and demoralizing. I rented an relatively expensive single-dwelling house from this company and when I called to say that the coat closet door was sticking and my son couldn't open it ...I received a call back from a Lisa Simeone that I wasn't to call about repairs any more and if I didn't like it there, I could "get out". (I had lived there for less than a month.) My father died on this date, July 25, several years ago, and my lease ended on July 30...with the funeral that week, I ran very close to the time I needed to be out and found that they had carted away my remaining belongs...things that I lost forever as I had not heard back from anyone re the death in my family. There was no one moving in directly after me. Suffice it to say, I rented from these "people" for eight (!) years as I needed to remain in the area of the rental property. The rent checks were always paid (and cashed) on time. In exchange for that, I had Mr. Kelly let himself into my house one time when my son was home alone and I was at work. There are other incidences to "pile-on" but I will end saying I felt simply dehumanized. read more
