I haven't been to the office. I have a situation I think of as a dental emergency. I called the office about 10:30, no answer. But they had another number to call for an emergency. I called that. No answer. It said 'leave a message you will get called'. 7 hours later, as they're closing, no call. Also, they're the only oral surgeon within 50 miles of Hayward who take some insurance. Despite the fact that this dentist was assigned by insurance for low income senior, he is greedy. If you don't have money, he won't even want to talk to you. Need an emergency extraction but this dentist wanted to do deep cleaning first along with several other monthly cleaning. The out pocket cost will be more than $2000. And I might or might not get the extraction after four months with completion of all the cleanings. They also don't want to tell me the cost of the extraction, just saying it depended on the condition of my teeth after all the deep cleanings. While I was in their office waiting for my exam, a patient was arguing with the front desk about her copay which was way more higher than the original quote prices. And the dentist wiped his dirty finger covered with my blood on the napkin that was put on my chest. Very rude and unprofessional. read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND I used this dentist for years out of convenience. Nothing special; Did my routine maintenance. I switched to a new dentist that was closer to my job. Upon my initial checkup at the new dentist, I was informed that I had an upper discolored wisdom tooth. I was never informed of this all the years I was with Cai. My new dentist could not believe I was unaware of this tooth and did not have a plan of care for it. I was truly disappointed to find this out when something could have been about it sooner. It's so hard to find a GOOD dentist these days that I had to share my experience with this office. I feel that I'm being generous giving them 1 star, but the work itself was good, just their ethics are less desirable to me. I was new to the area and lost my job, so I had new dental insurance which was not as great as my old, and I had to find a new dentist. Dr. Cai was one of the few reputable dentist on my crappy list Deltaworks provided. I went to this dentist and I actually had no problem with the visit. No pain, I was given a cleaning and then a proposed "treatment plan". They did the same for my child. I was told that I had three cavities that needed replacing and showing signs of premature periodontal work needed. The plan was not covered by my insurance, and since he only uses the white fillings, my cavities weren't covered either. So in total my cavities alone were $350 each totaling $1050. I just ignored the periodontal work because I can barely afford the cavities which to me are priority. My son was told he had 6 cavities and that totaled $2,100. OUCH! So what did my insurance cover??? I couldn't afford it, so I put it off. About a year later, I was able to upgrade my insurance to Delta Premiere where a lot more services were covered. I called this office to notify them to get the treatment rolling and they never called me back. THANK GOD!! It was a blessing in disguise because I found Carolyn Langer who is AMAZING and so truthful. Both my child and I were looked at, and I was preparing for the worse because I already new I had 3 and my kid 6 cavities. Turns out we both had NONE!!!! ZERO cavities! Really how did my child go from 6 to 0?? I know he had three teeth fall out since that visit, so he should have had at least 3 but 0?? Also Dr. Langer said I had not gum problems and she actually complimented me on how good I've taken care of my teeth knowing I haven't been to a dentist in over a year. I went to this dentist for a teeth cleaning was told to pay over $2000 for something called deep clean. I have delta dental insurance and was Shocked！ I called my insurance and found out my cleaning is 100% covered. I switch to another dentist and got my teeth clean （deep clean） yesterday $0 from my part！ This is very UNETHICAL practice！ SCAM！ PS i have a copy of the paymemt if you want to see it. read more

Dr. Cai is great and his staff are super helpful too! They were super nice about checking my insurance and going over what my cost would be after the insurance. Dr. Cai was very happy to answer any questions I had about my lame teeth, which was good. He was very honest and told me that if my wisdom teeth didnt bother me, then we don't need to do anything to it, if it did just let him know and we can set up an appointment. I hope I can do this with no STARS at all. DO NOT trust the dentist at all. He will tell you that you have issues that you do not. I picked him through my Kaiser Advantage Plan and am very sorry I did. His office told me I needed deep cleaning, they said I had deep pockets and between the hygienist and the dentist the numbers kept changing. Then they told me I HAD to pay them almost $2000.00 that day and have the work done immediately. No chance for a second opinion at all. I was there for a simply cleaning, I did not get it. They claim they cannot clean my teeth until I pay for this extra work. I left the office immediately and went to my dentist of 35 years and had them check my gums and teeth. I did not tell my old dentist until AFTER the visit what happened at Dr. Cai's office. My old dentist cleaned my teeth and said everything was in great shape. My "pockets" have not changed in 2-3 years and I did not need deep cleaning. Dr. Cai and his office appear to be very nice. Great if you only want nice and not reputable then fine. Be careful, be very careful unless you like paying for things you do not need. read more

I actually see Dr. Cai in Danville, CA at Blackhawk Dental and I must say, he and his staff are absolutely amazing. Very easy going and professional atmosphere with just the right amount of humor. (I mean, how funny can talking about your teeth really be?) From my initial appointment (cleaning/x-rays/whitening) through my replacement crown and filling, I was treated with respect and experienced superior customer service. The office is very clean and tidy and the staff is friendly and there to help. My insurance options were clearly explained before any procedures were completed so I could make an educated decision and form my "treatment plan" WITH Dr. Cai. (I've always been told what to do. I've never had the opportunity to create my plan/help decide the next course of action.) Overall, every experience I've had with Dr. Cai and crew has been great. I strongly recommend Blackhawk Dental to anyone who wants to enjoy going to the dentist! (I'm a needle-phobe too. Dr. Cai is skilled in this area. I didn't even feel it!) That same morning I got a call back and told I coukd see Dr. Cai in Danvile that samr day. Only reason/s I came here today is (1) work and (2) I live 5min away from his Hayward office. I guess the dentist is the type of place that you don't think about reviewing until you have a really bad experience. I was here the other day and decided to check in on Yelp and I noticed this place had only 2 reviews; one negative and one positive. I figured I'd spread the love and write a review for them :) I guess I could say I've never had a bad experience here, but come on, getting your teeth cleaned or a filling (or worse things that I've been fortunate enough to not have to experience!) is NEVER a fun experience and in my book (the fillings, but not really the cleanings I guess) is usually always considered a "bad experience". But I've been coming here for years and I think Dr. Cai is a great dentist and he gets the job done. I would give negative stars if I could. This office located in Blackhawk plaza is fraught with fraud! I too had a similar unethical experience - (as noted by other reviews) regarding the need for a "deep cleaning" after a brief glance and pretending to measure the pockets in my mouth the hygienist tells me I need a deep cleaning - and that I have pockets of 4's and 5's. She told me it would be a waste to do a regular cleaning on me. She then goes off to check my insurance to see how much is covered. The dentist whom I found lacking any kind of personality or warmth - briefly looked in my mouth and said the same thing the hygienist did. (I'm guessing they have their rehearsed script down very well) when I explained that I have never had any issues in the past and always had 1's and 2's he seemed to get irritated that I would question him. I left there and sought another opinion - where I was told That I in-fact I have pockets of only 1's and 2's. So dr Cai and his people were not only trying to get a lot of money out of me For unnecessary procedures, he's also doing the same to the insurance system. This review should have been written over a year ago but I was so mad that I needed to wait to write it. I brought my two kids in to get their 6 month check up at this office for the first time due to our insurance changing. The first tip off that this wasn't going to be good was that they insisted that the two appointments had to be scheduled 1 hour apart from each other. Who does that? It didn't matter if I scheduled them far out in advance their policy was to schedule them 1 hour apart . I get to the first appointment. They take the first kid (teen) back and tell me that I should wait in the lobby. I grab a magazine and before I can finish the first article she's back out. The receptionist says she's done and that everything is good. She was in the back for no more than 5 minutes. Let me remind you that this is our first visit there. The dentist doesn't call me back, doesn't come out and lets his receptionist give the report, again. . . who does that???? The receptionist tells me that the second kid will be seen in 1 hour. So we come back in 1 hour. There is a Starbucks next door. I rush over to grab a coffee before he gets called back so that this time I can go back and see what is going on. Guess what??? I get my coffee come back and he's already been seen (I was possibly gone 4 minutes). Receptionist says the same thing, he's good. Dentist, again does not come out. When I asked if the Dr was going to come out and talk to me, she just said that he was busy. We did NOT schedule a 6 month check, we will NEVER go back. Either this place sucks at giving parents of underage kids a proper report or our insurance was too crappy and they probably didn't want to spend the time. Regardless their loss as both my kids had braces and we visit our dentist every 3 months, and pay private for the extra check ups. Instead I switched to Castro Valley Smiles, where the teeth cleanings last longer than this places entire visit and Dr. Patel gives the parents a report and encourages parents to join their kids for the exam. read more

Best dentist I have ever been to very polite competitive prices works with insurance to get you the best price for your needs they speak several languages in this office about 5 or 6 located next to Starbucks so parking is a B!!!! I've been seeing Dr. Cai since he first opened his office in Union City and have done all my cleanings, fillings and dentures there. Bridge that Dr. Cai did was great and stayed for over 10 years, after which I had to replace. The crown Dr. Cai did hasn't been replaced yet. Very professional doctor and staff. I get my dental insurance through Aethna and all cleanings plus basic dental work (fillings, etc.) are covered. Also I am driving from San Francisco to see this doctor since haven't been able to find anyone in the city who I trust as much as I do Dr. Cai with my teeth! read more

DR Cai is rip off artist. Every customer needs deep cleaning so he can charge an additional $400.00. The cleaning is no different than what a good dentist would be doing under a general cleaning. after the 400.00 you will get soaked some more for maintenance which is an additional $50.00 every 6 months. Dr. Cai is a wonderful dentist. He is competent, gentle and caring. he does an excellent job of explaining what is going with my teeth and why he makes suggests a plan of action. I have had to have a variety of dental work done, some of it substantial, and have been very pleased with his work. His staff is very responsive as well. Worst dentist I have ever had. In my life I have had few dental problems and had exams and cleaning every 6-months. From the first visit at Dr. Cai's office they were trying to sell me on optional additional dental expenses. In the first visit they tried to convince me that the alloy fillings (I had no trouble with) needed to be replaced with non-metallic fillings at considerable costs (as I remember it was well over $1,000). In the next cleaning visit they wanted to sell me their recommended (expensive) electric tooth brush. On the third cleaning visit they said I needed an additional and expensive antibiotic treatments (several hundred dollars as I remember), and in the fourth visit they immediately wanted to sign me up for $1,100 deep cleaning procedure. On that fourth and last visit, when I said I wasn't prepared to immediately schedule this procedure, they immediately terminated my visit and never did clean my teeth. In 4 visits (one initial exam and 3 cleanings) I saw Dr. Cai once. They use the dental hygienist to push the extras. read more
