The best, most caring and professional staff all around with quality equipment! The new location is so clean and refreshing, although the old location was kept in pretty good shape. I have been going to Dr. Gunawan for years. I remember my first visit with them, I had a cavity that had been filled by another dentist 15 years prior and it messed up the grooves in my crown. Every dentist that I saw in that 15 year period would just make comments about how I have cavities, even though I explained to them that it has been filled just very poorly. Dr. Gunawan was the first dentist to notice right off the bat that it was an odd filling and she offered to fix it for me and did it that day! I no longer have an awkward fit to my bite. I recently switched dental insurance to Medi-Cal since I changed jobs and unfortunately they don't accept Medi-Cal here. I ended up going to a dentist that accepted my new dental insurance and had an awful experience. A week later a bunch of streaks started appearing on my teeth. I went back to Dr. Gunawan and she explained that the likely reason is that dentist was too aggressive and had abrasive equipment which created large microscopic grooves in my teeth for stains to accumulate. I have never had stains on my teeth prior to that dentist. Dr. Gunawan and her team removed the stains from my teeth and re-sealed them to ward off the staining. I would gladly pay out of pocket to see Dr. Gunawan again to keep my teeth clean and healthy rather than dealing with all the awful Medi-Cal dentists who actually ruin your teeth! read more

I am not a patient but rather a student at CSU East Bay, and I help run a student organization that does medical and dental missions in rural countries like Ghana and Honduras. I am writing this review to recognize Dr Alfonso and Joyce Navarrete's generosity. This year our school organization, Global Brigades, went to Nicaragua in June for our 9 day medical/dental mission, and since we are all students that plan for this trip, we raise everything ourselves to make our trip successful so we can provide treatment to over 900 patients. They offered to lend a hand and donated to us various items such as curing lights and an amalgamator that was beneficial for our trip. I reached out to OVER 20 dentists in the East Bay Area and Dr Alfonso and Joyce Navarette were one of the 2 dentists in the area that only offered to help us out. (Literally offices were telling me they were going to give me a call back or email me back, and I NEVER heard a word back from many of them). Because of their help, we saved hundreds of dollars and we were able to run a successful dental mission for the first time under our organization in Nicaragua. My wife and I originally came to Dr. Gunawan because of a special that we found online, plus we needed a new dentist having just moved from Michigan. We now have been coming to see Dr. Gunawan for 2 years for our bi-annual checkups, and I have also had one cavity filled. Honestly the entire staff is wonderful and very professional, but also friendly. There are two things in particular that I really appreciate about Dr. Gunawan: 1) she always schedules plenty of time for each appointment so that she can actually sit and talk with you about your teeth, you general health, your life, etc and 2) she takes a number of weekend appointments, so if like me it's not so easy to take time off work during the week days you can always come in on the weekends. As I mentioned, my wife and I generally only come in for our bi-annual checkups and cleanings, but the last time I came in I had a cavity (which I wasn't too excited about). Rather then making me come back at some later date to have the cavity taken care of, Dr. Gunawan had me sit back down and took care of everything right then/there. The office itself is relatively small, but all of the equipment is clean and as I mentioned the staff is very professional and friendly. I did some investigating on Yelp and was able to find Dr. Gunawan. I saw that she had all 5 star ratings but was suspect of the reviews since there were only about 20 or so. I decided to schedule an appointment to see how the visit would be. I'm glad I did. The office staff was very welcoming and Dr. Gunawan was very thorough with my check up and cleaning. Also, her dental hygienist did a stellar job cleaning my coffee stained teeth. Fast forward four years. She is willing to accommodate you and help with any queries you may have about billing etc. I'm sorry I can't remember your name! I'm terrible with names when I'm nervous. Dr. Gunawan is friendly, chatty and patient with you. She made sure I was numb for my fillings, even if it took 3 shots to get me there. She works so efficiently, the time flies when she is working on you. She'll offer you a squeezy ball if you need it for stress relaxation. There is a wee nurse there that I can't remember the name of, but she is so calming for nervous patients. She'll hold your hand if need be, suggests deep breathing, and calls you pet names (which I love, it makes me think they actually care about you). I'm sorry I can't remember your name, but thank you so much. I gave her a hug after we were done with the fillings. Twice. They also offer you a blanket if you're cold. They're wonderful and patient and will work to perfection. Aside my bi-annual routine check-up, I got my teeth whitened and many people have complemented on how great & white my teeth look. She also worked on a bridge crown on my front teeth, since I messed them up growing up from eating too much sugar. Dr. Gunawan has worked on my messy teeth to making it beautiful. Now I feel more confident about myself and I have great teeth to thank them. They also work well in working out your finances and they do care about your health as a whole, which is not something I can say for most dentists out there. My beloved dentist in Alameda had to close up shop plus we had moved off the island, so the search for a new dentist commenced. Yelp! was the source of consultation and ultimately influenced my going to Dr. Gunawan. One word: AWESOMES! She is congenial, comforting, and up to the latest in dental tech. Office is cozy and friendly and they communicate via email very well, which means bonus points from me with my wacky schedule. Dr. G. efficiently swapped out my ancient amalgam fillings with composites, dealt with my crown and tender gums, and most vital, all with no pain. The post-visit goodie bags are loaded with fabu dental swag and I got a marvelous price on a sonic toothbrush. Furthermore, Dr. Navarrete gave me an orthodontic consult and recommendation for a specialist in SF, should I choose to pursue treatment closer to home. I have had fillings, a deep cleaning, x-rays, and multiple cleanings here and have always left with no complaints. This review is for a FREE ortho consult I had with Dr. Navarette. This place is located in the "Majestic Pines Medical ...(something? office? building?)" I went in the parking lot and didn't even realize I was in the right place. So I exited and had to make another u-turn to go back in the parking lot. Haha. Anyway, Dr. N was super easy to talk to. He listened to everything I had to say about why I wanted to pull all my teeth out and replace them with some perfect dentures. After his little examination, he recommended solutions and explained why it would be better and why other options wouldn't work as well. I must say, it was very insightful. Like a light bulb turned on in my head and I felt smarter all of a sudden. I'm not fully committed to moving forward with the treatment, but when the time is right, I will definitely be getting it done here... Thank you Dr N for your time. (I have good teeth and dental hygiene) Dr. Gunawan worked with me in a very professional and trusting manner. The dental hygienist that worked on me was careful, and thorough and went over places a few times to make sure she got everything. She didn't yak at me but was quiet and concentrated on her work, which I very much appreciated. I am moving out of state next month, but if I were staying, I would definitely go back and become a regular. It was a good experience after being with one dentist for so long. So I normally have had a great experience here. I had found this place on Yelp a couple years back and made an appointment for a general check up, because it had been a LONG time and I still want to keep all my teeth if I can. I also had a chip in one of the bottom part of my teeth that I wanted fixed. The ladies in the office were all very nice and the doctor was very informative and helpful, although she couldn't help fix my bottom tooth (long story, no big deal). So fast forward now and I call because I'm pretty sure one of my wisdom teeth was coming in. They were able to squeeze me in, thankfully on a Friday, late in the day. Sure enough, it was my wisdom teeth and that's why they're getting 2 stars. I needed to be referred to an oral surgeon, so the front desk was supposed to send me an email, that day for a referral. Never happened. I called the first time, on Monday and she was supposed to resend it. Never got it. Mind you, we confirmed my email in person and over the phone. Called again, a couple days later and had to leave a voicemail. Never got a call back. Seriously, how many times should I have to call or wait when my poor tooth is throbbing? So now, here I am, left to find another dentist because of the lack of communication they didn't provide. read more

After having been to many dentists throughout the years, probably due to my favorable disposition for sweets, and a bad tendency to be remiss about flossing regularly, this is the first dental practice where I feel compelled to share with everyone I know, and write a review for, as its a secret that is best not kept, but shared. It is with high confidence that I can say that this dental practice stands out as superior to all the others I've been to, and thus I give it my highest recommendations. It is not that close for me, but well worth the drive. What stands out most is the consistent high standard of care, professionalism, and genuine care for the patients best interest that one feels with this family practice. They helped me out when I was short on cash, too, allowed me to pay later, when other places insisted on payment upfront, and I paid much less. They seemed far more interested in treating me and getting me better, all fixed up, than making money. They found small areas that were pre-cavities, and showed me how to treat it, giving me a calcium paste, allowing it to heal itself, instead of making money putting in a filling like the other dentist wanted to do. They said it was not necessary. And they were right. They reviewed my x-rays from my former place and found my root cancel was sub-standard, and not done right. No other dental place ever told me that. They predicated a poor prognosis and high chance of failure. Again, they turned out to be right. The other dentist refunded my money so I could have it re-treated (referred to an endodonticst for the job per the standard of care), only after I wrote a letter with the documentation and help from this practice, which wanted to see things put right. I could go on, but my point is that this place is very honest, upfront, and puts YOU the patient first, not their own financial interests. Other places I always felt like I was at a business, and this aspect stood out--but not here. At this place, their business model seems to be based on the idea that growth will occur by just focusing on being good people and providing the best professional dental care, and allowing word of mouth to spread. I also believe they are very careful to do a good job the first time. They stay late and don't take short cuts, are not rushed, and I've always been pleased by the results. Lastly, the staff is super friendly and nice. Always smiling, and I never feel I ever am a bother. I can call anytime or ask any questions and they are always happy to help, reschedule me, or stay late if I can't get off work early. If you are in need of a dentist, hurry up and don't miss out on this place. It's a rare find. I am happy to drive my 45 mins to go here rather than any other place. read more

I had the best experience today at Hooray 4 Teeth. I had a accident this weekend where I cracked my front tooth. I was frantically searching for a dentist to help me and Veronica was able to fit me in the next day. She even went through the trouble to call my transitional insurance company which is sort of a nightmare to get a hold of! Was very accommodating with scheduling my appointments as soon as possible due to the fact that I knocked out my front two teeth and needed fillings because I was not about to walk around with two gaps. Dr. Gunawan is very gentle, caring, nice, and made me feel very comfortable during all the sessions I went to her (I chipped the fillings like 4 times afterwards). Each time, she charged me the same amount (very reasonably priced). When I finally decided to change from fillings to crowns, she even allowed me to use a previous charge for credit for the crowns. Her office is small and cozy with a spacious parkinglot. All her staff are very welcoming. I am sure I will probably go to her husband for braces, because I was told they work in the same office and he is the orthodontist there.
