    Beef Platter (#1 on menu)

Excellent Ethiopian food with made to order spice levels, large portions, and very reasonable prices. Service was fast and friendly. The food was delicious and I had leftovers for a second meal (at $20)! Adding this place to the rotation of great reasonably priced restaurants!

    Keren special

Visited Keren's during lunch time it was quite busy. The restaurant is quite small and cozy. Staffs were super efficient. I ordered Keren's special and everything was tasty. It's my second time trying Eritrean food and I love it. I enjoy the side potatoes and veggies a lot. I couldn't eat it all as the portion size is massive. Two people can easily order one for lunch. Highly recommend if you are around the DuPont Circle area.

The portions were pretty big to the point that one dish filled me up even as someone with a large appetite. The fish dulet (tilapia) was delicious and filling, and was not super spicy even though I ordered it spicy. The enjera was pretty good too. I would come back the next time in D.C. to try their breakfast dishes.

    Veggie combo and chicken tibs

I recently went back to Keren for the first time for a weeknight dinner since the fire there a couple years ago and was pleased to find that the experience, the affordable prices, and food were as good as I remembered. I got the chicken tibs and ended up also getting the veggie combo, both of which were perfectly prepared, extremely flavorful, and a fantastic portion size. I look forward to my next visit! From October 2022: I have been to Keren several times for dine-in and takeout and the food is always outstanding. I ordered ful with a side-order of injera to-go, and the ful was creamy and appropriately salted. Keren's use of tomatoes, jalapenos, and herbs complemented the dish and the accompanying baguettes well and provided freshness. I have ordered the veggie combo and meat dishes on several previous visits and always enjoyed them. Because Keren's food is so good and the physical space is small, Keren is always crowded and you should prepare to wait 15-20 minutes for a table and 20-30 minute waits for your food once you order. Nonetheless, the wait is worth it. I order from Keren regularly and look forward to my next visit!

While walking around D.C. I decided to try this Ethiopian restaurant. It's small, clean, and has ahome type atmosphere. I ordered the Special Tibsi- Chicken, lentils, vegetables, and an injera. This was probably the best meal I have enjoyed while in D.C.! The chicken was so flavorful and the lentils were perfectly cooked. The portion was very large and it could have easily served two people but I tried my best to finish it on my own. I didn't want to stop eating that chicken! The injera was spongy and light and didn't fall apart when you picked up your food. I will recommend this place to everyone and the only reason it's not a 5 star is because the attention to service could have been better on this day. You will not be disappointed eating here.

    Ful with egg

A friend and I made Keren Restaurant our first stop when we arrived in DC this weekend. I was really hungry and thrilled to finally be checking out this Eritrean restaurant that has been open in DC since 1987. 1987, y'all. That's almost 40 years, and that says a lot. The restaurant is casual and comfortable, with big front windows that keep the small but long restaurant light and bright. And the service was friendly throughout. But the food is why we were there. We each started with a cappuccino, which was great after our drive and with our brunch meal. And then - shockingly - we both ordered the same thing: Ful with eggs. Ful is a dish popular across parts of the Middle East and North Africa made from stewed fava beans. It's often eaten for breakfast. When I had Ful for the first time many years ago, I fell in love. And whenever I see it on a menu, I'm done with research and options - that's it, that's where I'm going, that's what I'm ordering. Keren's Ful is topped with fresh tomatoes, raw onion, raw jalapeno, creamy yogurt, and olive oil, and then you can choose to top the dish with eggs, tuna, or sardines, or served alongside a salad. The beans (made with Berbere spice) are the obvious star of the dish, and Keren's version of one of my favorite breakfasts was delicious, warm, comforting, filling... I loved it. It's a big bowl (and served with some great French rolls), so we weren't able to finish every last bite, which made me a little sad, because it was delicious. They have a full menu for breakfast (which they serve all day, every day) and then a full menu of other items (including combo platters). I loved my Ful, and I'd go back for that alone. But I'd also love to return to try more of their menu. Maybe with more than one friend next time so we can share and enjoy more of their Eritrean food and hospitality.

Amazing restaurant for Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine with large portions and some of the best food in D.C.! Very friendly staff who came to check on us up all the time. Recommend trying their #3 or their #4 (or both!) and you can absolutely split one of the dishes with 2 people since the portions are quite large. The restaurant is a little small, so make sure to get there early, but the atmosphere is very cozy and I truly appreciated the experience.

I have long been awaiting the reopening, and was pleasantly surprised to see they opened a few weeks ago. The place is your standard Ethiopian spot. It feels comfortable and intimate. There's a not a lot of tables and reservations are not available at this time. Prepare if you plan to go during a busy day/time. There's food is prepared quickly and served bubbling and hot table side. I ordered the vegetarian platter and shiro. Both were very good, although I think I would ask for the shiro to be spiced up quite a bit. The cabbage and potatoes were my favorite vegetable sides. They were so flavorful and delicious, with the potatoes just perfectly cooked. I also appreciate the large serving of salad. It like this is always skimped on at most places, so it was happy to see. My one irk is the bathroom setup. To use the toilet my face was in a urinal, which was an odd start to the meal.

Even though it was dinner time I got their breakfast sampler and it was delicious. The fava bean dish, buttery tortilla, eggs, and warm bread, with Eritrean tea. The service was so friendly, you feel right at home.

I came here for lunch with a group of friends and it was the cutest place. Situated on the corner of Florida and 18th it's easy to miss, I've probably passed it dozens of times in my years of trekking up to Adams Morgan. When we arrived we got a warm welcome as my friend knows the owners, and we sat at a table near the back. Since it was my first time visiting along with another friend we did some sampling of the menu and decided to order a few dishes to share from the breakfast menu and a pot of tea. The tea was good but really strong I asked for honey to cut the strength. I can't recall the names of everything we tried but it was all very fresh and full of flavor. It took a while for the food to come out but that's ok this place felt very welcoming. They had a steady stream of customers both dining in and doing to go orders. I would visit again and recommend you check it!

Keren is back!! After a stint away, it's back and people couldn't be more happy. First opened in 1987, Keren is a small Eritrean restaurant just south of Adams Morgan. Walking in on a Wednesday at 5:30pm, we got a table for three right away. Service is quick and friendly. Within minutes, our honey wine and Keren Special were on our table. The Keren Special is a mix of beef and veggie dishes on injera. It's very tasty!

What a fabulous experience at Keren's. The food was authentic, flavorful and just enough spicy! Super friendly staff.

Didn't know I'd fall in love so early in the year. It's only the second day but here we are. The service was swift and thorough. We got spiced Ethiopian Tea and the #4 with beef. I do not know for the life of me why this isn't #1. Everything was delicious and I will be coming back several times over the next few months. With me being observant I recognized several people walking by and patrons beside us with the same sentiments "we back!" The place was pretty intimate but not noisy. Love it here.

The awning outside needs refurbishment and inside furniture is not updated. It's dark inside, almost like a night club. Perhaps it is sometimes. I did not like the decor, it was a little run down and honestly did not match up to the prices. The service was also disappointing. I felt that staff lacked a bit of professionalism and they rarely checked on us. The plates are huge. That is a plus. My partner ordered the goat and I tried the red snapper. I think one plate is big enough to share. I like the spinach, but everything needed a bit of salt. While the red snapper was coated in a lovely tomato and red pepper gravy, I felt it made the crispyness of the fried fish disappear and it was kind of soggy. Maybe you can ask for the gravy on the side. The food is not bad, but given the physical establishment and the service I wouldn't return.

Our waiter was so charismatic, helpful, and kind. He even turned up the music in our corner of the restaurant upon request! The food was generally good, just a bit on the drier end. Even the stew wasn't really soupy. So if you were trying to mix some rice with some stew, you basically got cake on your plate. Regardless, everything was seasoned to absolute perfection. Also, don't know if this matters but it may matter to some- though this is an East African Restaurant, the menu is slightly more Kenyan than Ugandan. Something to keep in your expectations when visiting!

I'd heard great things about The Continent, so it felt like a must-try especially since Swahili Village is one of our go-to favorites for comparison. The space itself was great, nice interior, well-decorated, and service was solid throughout. They also had two distinct vibes going: one side had a bit of a DJ/lounge energy, while the other was more elegant and laid-back, better for actual dinner conversation. We sat on the calmer side. Drinks were good. We had a sangria and a tequila-based cocktail, both solid. For appetizers, we got the shrimp and the beef samosas. Unfortunately, the beef samosas just didn't hold up compared to Swahili Village's. I've had Swahili Village's beef samosas multiple times and they always come out hot, crispy, and consistent. These didn't quite match up, and that was strike one for me. The shrimp appetizer was nice, good sauce, though it could've used a bit more depth of flavor. I also ordered the pepper soup, which was excellent and genuinely spicy (more than I could really handle, but I still finished it). For entrées, my boyfriend got the Suya with jollof rice, and I got the red snapper with jollof rice as well. He really enjoyed his. The beef was cooked well and flavorful, and the jollof rice was good. My fish was also cooked nicely, though the sauce needed a bit more flavor. The bigger issue: they were out of plantains. That was strike two, and it stung more because it was my boyfriend's birthday dinner and plantains are his favorite. It's rare for an African or Caribbean restaurant to run out of them entirely. Overall, a decent experience, but with the high expectations going in, a couple of misses kept it from fully living up to the hype for us. I'd go back for the pepper soup and give it another shot, but I'm hoping for hotter, fresher samosas and actual plantains next time.

Our visit coincided with restaurant week and had a pre-fixe menu for $65/pp. Our server was gracious enough to tell us about the other specials available but I decided that I would be fine with the restaurant week menu. For my starter, I enjoyed the oxtail patties and a mango basil smash. The entree was shrimp creole with focaccia bread that I graciously used for sopping up the delicious sauce that hugged the shrimp. Rounding out the meal, I chose the rum cake. None of my items disappointed. I found each to be an appropriate serving and shareable. The coco bread was complimentary and the flecks of salt were satisfying. I enjoyed a second cocktail and chose the Sorel Rickey. It was a hibiscus flavored, rum enhanced, and kissed by lime kinda drink. The manager made her rounds and was very personable. The other guests were watching the dishes being presented to the various tables and you could tell that it made one, a bit eager for their own food or a return visit. Our server was top notch and we enjoyed talking with him and his energy. This restaurant supports solo dining, group events, and date night dining. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted and his birthday was acknowledged at the hostess stand, which was a nice first impression. The atmosphere is easily one of the highlights of Dogon. The moody lighting, modern decor, and especially the playlist create such a fun, intimate vibe. The music was jamming the entire time and honestly played a huge role in making the experience enjoyable. We ordered quite a few dishes, and there were definitely some standouts. The crab hoe cakes were delicious and probably one of my favorite things we ordered. The Wagyu ribeye was another standout, incredibly tender and seasoned beautifully. I initially came in wanting to try the Ma Dukes shrimp, but they had recently revamped the menu and replaced it with a Creole shrimp dish. Unfortunately, this was probably my least favorite item of the night. There was a very odd, pungent flavor that I couldn't get past, and the dish was overwhelmingly spicy to me. The oxtail patties were good but nothing that really stood out. The rum cake was delicious, although personally, I would have loved a little more rum flavor. The drinks, however, were all very good and definitely worth trying. The service was just okay. While we were greeted at the hostess stand, there wasn't really any acknowledgment afterward that we were celebrating a birthday, even though the occasion was included on our reservation. I wasn't necessarily expecting anything extravagant, but a simple "Happy Birthday" or candle with our dessert would have made the experience feel a bit more special. Ultimately, I'm 50/50 on whether I'd return. The music and atmosphere are a huge draw, and there were definitely some really good dishes. However, considering the price point and some of the portion sizes, I'm not completely convinced the overall experience matches the cost. I'd definitely recommend Dogon for the vibe, drinks, and a few standout dishes, but whether it's worth the price is where I'm still undecided.

I've been wanting to try Ghanian food for the longest time, so when I saw Appioo on UberEats, I just knew I had to put in an order. I got their grilled red snapper with a side of fufu and banku (two traditional paste-like Ghanian dishes; fufu is a starchy dough made with cassava and plantains, while banku is a slightly sour fermented version made with cornmeal and cassava). The red snapper was perfectly grilled, with a delightful char on the outside and super crispy skin, but flaky, tender flesh. It was served with a light, refreshing tomato sauce, and shito / black pepper sauce. The shito was incredibly rich, with a great spicy, smoky, and umami flavor. The tender fish and flavorful sauces went wonderfully with the two sides, with the fufu serving as more of a blank canvas (and therefore a great way to let the natural flavors of the fish -- or the deep, smoky, spicy flavors of the shito -- shine). The banku was perfectly tangy and just the right amount of funky, and it was great with the fish on its own. Everything from Appioo was incredible! I can't wait to sample a few more of their dishes, hopefully from inside the actual restaurant.

When I questioned the discrepancy, the waitress told me that they had "tried to update" the pricing on the menu and that the number must have come off. You cannot advertise one price in writing and then tell customers at checkout that the actual price is something different. To make matters worse, when I first entered the restaurant, there was a horrible smell. I should have trusted my instincts and gone somewhere else. To the OWNER of this establishment: please understand that I take deceptive and misleading pricing practices seriously. I have photos of the menu and my itemized receipt documenting exactly what was advertised versus what I was charged. I will be submitting this documentation to the DC Office of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I will also be reporting the pricing discrepancy to the DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection so that the appropriate agencies can determine whether these practices comply with DC's consumer protection requirements. If your prices have changed, update your menus. Customers should know what they are agreeing to pay BEFORE they order, not after the bill arrives. Update: I've already submitted complaints to the BBB and the Office of the Attorney General as of 9/12/26

I didn't realize where the restaurant was located beforehand, so I was a little surprised when I arrived. It's in a very urban area, which may or may not matter depending on your comfort level. There was a decent amount of seating inside if you choose to dine in. The restaurant was okay in terms of cleanliness, but personally, I'd opt for takeout. I originally planned to eat inside but changed my mind once I got there. Unfortunately, the customer service wasn't the best. I wasn't greeted when I walked in, and when I received my order, the takeout container wasn't fully closed and was placed halfway into the bag. I'm not sure if it was just an oversight, but it didn't leave the best first impression. Now, the food, that's where they won me over. Everything was well-seasoned, and the suya had just the right amount of spice. They were out of the vegetable I originally wanted, but I'm actually glad I tried the corn because it was absolutely delicious. And that suya butter sauce? It was the star of the meal! Overall, while the location and customer service weren't my favorite, the food was flavorful enough that I'd come back if I were in the area and craving suya.

The restaurant is divided into two sections - upstairs for dining and diameters for carry out. Upstairs it was - and with a window seat on one side and tasteful decor on the other, we got busy with ordering. What an incredible sensory experience! Top marks for the hibiscus drink and ginger juice (the latter is not for the faint of hear - it's got a kick, and is refreshing at the same time!) One thousand percent recommendation in the grilled snapper with a side of plantains and jollof rice! The nutty and flavorful spices complemented the snapper and the spicy side dish would give a jolt with the first bite, but then would become the pleasantly warming! The service was great - friendly and welcoming! The restroom was spotless, and all I can say is go now, and enjoy the homey, hearty, taste of W. Africa right here in the nation's capital!

It's a small but quaint spot with a mix of booth and table seating, making it a nice place for a relaxed dinner with friends. As a picky eater visiting for the first time, I kept my order simple with wings and rice. The wings were the highlight of the meal--crispy, flavorful, and well-seasoned. The rice, however, was disappointing. It was dry and lacked seasoning, and I found myself wishing it had at least a little butter and salt to enhance the flavor. The mocktails were delicious and complemented the meal well. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The music was at the perfect volume--easy to enjoy while still being able to carry on a conversation without shouting, which made for a pleasant evening with friends. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made us feel welcome throughout the meal. One small note: the ladies' restroom was clean but very small and narrow. It had a hook-and-latch style door but no place to hang a purse, which would be a nice addition. Parking on H Street is always a hit or miss, so plan accordingly if you're driving. Ratings: * Food: (3/5) * Atmosphere: (3/5) * Service: (4/5) * Dinner with Friends: (5/5) Overall, Lydia on H is a pleasant neighborhood spot with friendly service, tasty wings, and excellent mocktails. While the rice missed the mark for me, I enjoyed the company, the conversation, and the relaxed atmosphere. I would consider returning to try other menu items.
