Kettlehouse makes so many of my favorite beers and the amphitheater is a great place to see a show. My husband and I stopped in on our way to Missoula and we each ordered flights of new beers as well as favorites. The Snowblind White Stout is fantastic as well as the Vanilla Cold Smoke. It was good to have gotten to try some KettleHouse Brewing's beer for Steve and myself. We had the Coffee Cold Smoke which was a Scotch Ale with Coffee... a combination I don't believe we have had before in our beer adventuring and if we did it was at an infrequent time. But we did enjoy this particular Scotch Ale due to this combination. Flavor highlights to detect while enjoying this beer are malty, sweet and coffee. You will also see the beer being dark, like a good Scotch Ale should be and the body of the beer is nice and smooth. She was absolutely amazing and took such good care of us especially after she found out what a crappy day we were having. It's just one of those comfort places. People gathering, talking and enjoying really good craft beer. It's like being in your favorite "Cheers" bar. I am amazed that one barkeep can manage the entire crowd and keep her cool. She is all-business but friendly and competent. This is a great place to meet friends and enjoy a hot afternoon. Kettlehouse is my 315th brewery and I'm glad we could stop in. We were on our way to Great Falls a couple days ago and I had to stop in on the way back. I'm familiar with their Cold Smoke beer which is available in stores in CdA. I pick it up regularly. I didn't do a full flight since we still have to drive today. I ordered a Cold Smoke with vanilla, which was REALLY good. Without any thought at all I also picked up a four pack of their barrel aged Cold Smoke. This is for home. I know this review shows up under the Kettlehouse South Side but we actually went to the one with the amphitheater but for some odd reason the brewery didn't show up on Yelp. Not sure what the issue is. Our experience at Kettlehouse started out under suspicious circumstances. The brewery does not appear to be a normal brewery from the outside. It has more of a dive bar feel. "We're here, let's check it out." Maybe acting like a dive bar helps them evade the 8 pm last pour restrictions that other breweries have in Montana. Yes, Montana breweries are required by law to stop selling beer at 8 pm. My head almost exploded when I heard about this. I think the freedom loving state of Montana needs to look up the definition of freedom. Ok, sidebar finished. Next, we got out of our car and my wife noticed a large nail sticking out of our front right tire, not a good sign when you are on a road trip. It tapped at the nail and pulled it out, noticing that it never made it through my thick tire treads. Crisis averted. We entered Kettlehouse to find a handful of people seated at the bar, a heavily decorated interior, and a large open garage door allowing drinkers to sip next to some fresh air and outside views. The bar had the design of an interior that had been around for a while, with little pictures and knickknacks added here and there, as if something was added every few months over the course of many years. It gave off the feeling of independent creativity, unrestrained by the corporate design seen in many breweries these days. The beers were good quality. We enjoyed the light IPA the most. read more

Now ALWAYS understaffed. Bartender (singular) ALWAYS alone. Bartender (singular) is flying up and down the bar. Bartender (singular) could not answer my honest question about leaving a shirt there the previous day for hours. Takes time to get another beer. That is abuse of labor. Kettlehouse was my gateway to craft beer. Pre-Kettlehouse, I used to drink a lot of Corona :/. Doublehaul introduced me to the flavor of hops and it was love at first drink. I spent many Friday nights in my early-20s bellied up to the bar at Kettlehouse and it is still one of my favorite breweries on earth. What I love about the Kettlehouse is that they brew such a wide variety of beers, and they do it well. Too many breweries get hung up on brewing whatever is the flavor of the moment, while Kettlehouse's signature beer is a Scotch ale (Cold Smoke), which isn't really a popular style anywhere else in America right now. I appreciate that they just stick to what they do well and aren't just trying to be the next Treehouse. The Myrtle Street location is the original and has a warm and friendly vibe. I recommend spending a few hours here if you are looking for a relaxing experience with great beer. read more

A co worker of my husband recommended us stopping on our road trip to try their beer. We took a stretching break from driving and stopped. We missing this place because the sign outside or on the window had a different name. After walking down the side of the building, we realized that was the place and walked back. This bar was busy! They had high bar tables, the bar and around the corner more seating area. They don't serve food but there was a food truck outside that had a line of people ordering. We ordered 2 IPAs. Disappointed doesn't begin to describe how we felt at Kettlehouse South. This used to be our favorite brewery, now beers, atmosphere and the servers have changed. I could always count on the fresh bongwater being tasty and not too hoppy, but indeed it had that mouthful of metal taste. We tried a couple of samples and didn't find anything that had the depth the old beers used to. Perhaps we would have been OK if we were colsdmoke fans... The service wasn't. The 2 beer tenders were far more interested in visiting with friends than taking care of other bar patrons, not like the old days when Ryan and company were there. We're willing to head out to Bonner, but we won't hit our old favorite, Southside for a very long time. Kind of frustrating since we brewed our wedding beer there when it was a "you brew". read more

A beat-up old warrior, pioneer to the Missoula independent brewing scene. It's in a cool corner of town, with great bakeries nearby and hip-hop and house music booming on the PA (at least that's what boomed the other afternoon). The floors are polished cement, the staff are reasonably polished professionals. The barstools are living out what must be their third lives, reincarnated from the scrap heap. The splits in the naugahyde are like backscratchers (beware, wearers of short shorts and short skirts). The beers are exemplary. They are brewed with imagination and attention to detail, coming out clean and flavorful, often in formulations that are tricky to pull off. These guys do a great job, and, to celebrate, slap a punny cannabis-related name on seemingly every other beer they serve. There's another, newer, glitzier K-Hole on 1st, and I didn't get to check that one out this trip. But I'll definitely hit up the Myrtle Street branch again. If it's warm out, I think I will bring them a No-Pest Strip. The only real drag to this location is the persistently annoying insect life...but, in the establishment's defense, it's been unseasonably warm out. read more

We stopped by here on our way through Missoula based on a recommendation by a brewer from Grand Teton in Victor, Idaho. He suggested we tried the fresh and old bong water, unfortunately the fresh was the only one on tap. We sampled most of the main selection and were unimpressed with a few including the nitro eddy line. We decided on pints of the fresh bong water and the cold smoke. The cold smoke was my favorite beer they had, it was light and refreshing while still having a full bodied smoked chocolaty flavor. The fresh bong water was unique being a hemp beer yet lacked flavor and body. The place was also very loud for being partly full, but I guess that's expected for a small brewery with no soundproofing. Overall, an okay experience. read more

There's a famous opening line in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, which took me a little while to figure out: "It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love." It's a reference to the smell of cyanide (some say arsenic), ingested when the pain of amorous rejection gets too hard to handle in this lifetime. Well, if I were to say something about Kettlehouse that you don't already know, it would be kinda like this: "It was inevitable; the smell of brewer's yeast reminded him of the Kettlehouse, and the painful necessity of choice." You see, this isn't a dive bar, looks to the contrary. It's an urban brewery where the fermenting goes on constantly, and you're there to taste, not get wasted. You only have three wishes (a day), like Aladdin. Three beers to pick before you reach the legal limit, not of intoxication, but of allowable tasting in the state of Montana. That's the painful part. Because you will really wish that you didn't have to choose. But the key to enjoying Kettlehouse is to resist that urge, lest you go the way of Marquezian unrequited love. The beer will not love you more if you down it like a thirsty man possessed. In fact, it will lose respect for you, because you've violated the most basic principle of microbrew 101: it ain't fuckin' Coors Light, so don't act like it is. Make a date with one of them at a time and experience the hard core romance of commitment. Beer foreplay is best done slowly, monogamously, savoring the sensations, absorbing the atmosphere, and staying alert enough to enjoy it from start to finish. Nobody should get pissed on Barleywine. It's served in a snifter, for goodness sake, not a shot glass. Sure, you can come for the Cold Smoke. Never a bad choice. But see what's seasonal. These ephemeral offerings will surprise you. And you'll become smitten with them, which is poignant and tragic because they'll inevitably go away to make room for the next set of suitors. For me, that's the joy of beer drinking at this level: tracking the seasons, from Maibock in the spring to Ginseng pale ale and orange-infused wheat in summer to freshly hopped brew at harvest time to malted Oktoberfest to darker, spicier winter warmers. Because when it comes to the K-hole, free love rules apply. But one at a time is still the best. OK ... two, tops. Learn the rules before you start. The Kettlehouse Rules: (i) Come early. This past summer, the wife and I stopped in Missoula for a night while making our way from Yellowstone National Park to Glacier National Park and, while there, had some beers at KettleHouse. The service was great, the beers were tasty, the atmosphere was chill. What more can one ask for?!? As an added bonus, they were able to fill some "mini-growlers" (a 32oz can, essentially) for us to pack in our ice chest -- perfect for camping. We enjoyed them around the campfire. read more

I have to say I was less than enthusiastic about going to this location after conversing with the snarky server at their 1st Street tap house (that is the only brewery in MT I gave a 1 star review to...attitude is completely controllable!). As it turned out, I'm glad I did!! Not only is the beer fantastic, but the server more than made up for the rude woman at their other location. She brought out merchandise, advised on the best colors (and that certain styles were being discontinued), and even though it was busy she made sure we were well taken care of. Although this location is smaller, parking is better, it is a cozier atmosphere, and like I said...service is WAY better. While perusing their collection of growlers we even found one of our growlers hanging up among their collection (my husband manages a brew pub and restaurant in MN)! I was really impressed by the beers at Draught Works, but Kettlehouse edged them out as my favorite brewery in Missoula. The NEIPA and sour they had on tap were very well made. They also had a Citra IPA that was exceptional. I was able to pick up a corked and caged bottle of the sour as well, so that was great. I saw crowlers available. read more

No one gets it, so I find myself buying up as many 4 packs as I can afford to then bring them back to Idaho,Portland and Seattle. The friends that I have turned on to Cold Smoke now hate and love me for showing them the light then explaining that they now have to make the trip to Montana. Last Sunday before I was making my way back to Seattle, I attempted to buy a growler at the brewery.. No dice. either they are closed every Sunday.. You can't beat the original! This brewery/ former tap room is by far my favorite spot for a beer in Missoula. The beer is always good. They usually have something on nitro (usually coldsmoke) and it is the ONLY place in town to get Honey Heffe (best beer ever) the staff is friendly and will make a point to know the beer and you. It isn't much to look at, but it is a diverse crowd and you can have more beer here then 3. When you are in Missoula this is a MUST stop on any brew tour. read more

The best brewery I've ever been to. Lucky for us, they even have two locations now--one next to big Digger near the Hip Strip and another on the Northside above the Orange Street tunnel. But between you and me, I prefer the grit of the original on Myrtle. I've never had a single beer here that was bad. Their Cold Smoke is epic--but everyone knows about it. When it's around, get their Rastafari Red. I don't even LIKE Reds. And any of their IPAs will agree with you. Try the Nitro! Get a growler! Take your friends from out of town. Cold Smoke is by far my most favorite liquid libation. Thank you for putting it in a can so that I can safely transport it. Compared to the other Kettlehouse, this one is a bit more on the bohemian, hipster, college crowd, side. The 2 buildings and spaces couldn't be more different, but each has it's own charm and purpose and I like them both. Admittedly, my taste in a brewery tend to lean more toward the Kettlehouse located on 1st Street, but that's a different review and where here to discuss this location. Whichever location you decided to visit (I suggest you try both), you will not be disappointed with their product. One brew in particular, the Cold Smoke, is probably the best beer I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. Cold Smoke is cruel trick of fate! Here I discover the best beer ever, as in, since the beginning of time, and it was unfairly and cruelly snatched away from me. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way about Cold Smoke, and the other offerings, because Kettlehouse became too big. They actually had to scale back their distribution due to them not being able to keep themselves under the 10K (barrel) limit that allows them to operate their taprooms and charge for beer. As a result, I can no longer get Cold Smoke on tap, here in the Kalispell area, and that pisses me off! Oh fate, how you mock me. read more

Although I'm not a local and I only went to the south location, I hate to admit that I wasn't a fan. We were told to go here from every brewery between here and Bozeman so maybe the expectations were high. The beers were disappointing but the space was great. I imagine that if I were within walking distance of this brewery that I would frequent it because of the laid back atmosphere. If you are limited on time. The cold smoke was really liked. We liked all the beer This place is a brewery and has not jumped to a eatery. If it should make that jump this will be a place to come in Missoula. Now it is worth stopping by the beers are excellent, I am not a craft beer snob it is just really hard to get my wife to drink any beer but the cold smoke is excellent. The amber and pale ales a very tasty and the IPA has just enough Hops. This is a must try in Missoula just not for lunch unless you drink your lunch. read more

Wow. Imagine the purest form of neighborhood brewery in a cool mountain town, and Kettlehouse will magically manifest itself in your mind. I'd never experienced a brewery that was such a community fixture. Cold smoke and bong water are amazing beers, and Kettlehouse is an awesome place to enjoy them. There are few distractions to your beer enjoyment. No food, no hawking of merchandise- just beer and comfy places to savor it with your dog sitting nicely outside and bike locked up to the rack.
