Named after the Great Burn of 1910 in the Bitterroot Wilderness, and dedicated to the Missoula Hotshots. Rustic burnt wood decor. Good is through rotating food trucks, but only Wednesday through Sunday. Excellent beers. I had the Smoke Chaser Porter and the Tie One On Coconut Brown Ale. The brown ale was on Nitro making it extra creamy. Friendly locals, I sat at the bar and chatted with a couple for about an hour. Of course they have all the merch you could desire. Great Burn Brewing was a great stop while making many stops at breweries along the I-90 corridor recently from Billings all the way into Washington state. They have a very cool taproom which I appreciated as it was clean and just seemed fresh for all patrons. The beer that Steve and I got here was their Coffee Stout. Oh, I do love a good Coffee Stout and this one was no exception to that rule in the slightest. Flavors to look for with this stout are of course Coffee, Chocolate and a nice sweetness to it. The beer is very smooth and that's always a good feature to have when enjoying a Stout such as this one. read more

Great Burn Brewing is brewery #275 for me. Great Burn is named after the great burn of 1910 where a huge swath of western Montana and North Idaho burned. This was also the burn in which Big Ed Pulaski managed to save almost all of his fire crew by leading them into a mine and holding the ones who tried to leave at gunpoint. This was just outside Wallace, ID. Anyway... GBB was pretty open and slow when we arrived but it was early. We grabbed beers and a table. GBB has no food but that wasn't a p re ink de n for us since we had just eaten. I got a flight of five. I'm not going to review then individually because this isn't a beer competition and I just don't feel like giving tasting notes for every beer. Sue me. I went with the Mexican lager, Spiced winter wheat, Mango sour, Great Burn IPA, and Smoke Chaser Porter. SWPFTD went with the Tie One on coconut brown. I enjoyed all the beers and we would stop in at GBB again. Husband and I shared a flight of five beers, which was only $10! We got a pumpkin ale on nitro, porter, IPA, chocolate cherry stout and coconut brown. There was seating on the main floor but also a second indoor floor overlooking the brewery which is where we sat. I thought all the beers were solidly tasty - after losing the receipt and not knowing which was which, my husband and I were torn on whether one we were drinking was the smoke chase porter or the cherry chocolate stout. Great Burn Brewing is a nice little brewery a couple of miles south of downtown Missoula. It has the relaxing feel of a suburban brewery. We sampled a few of their beers on the patio one evening around 8 pm. The beers were decent quality, but the patio could use a few updates. Picnic benches are hard get in an out if you have long legs. If I wanted to get into a picnic bench with someone else, my long legs would narrowly swing by their head as I made my way in, hopefully positioning myself in a comfortable position because I would never want to get up again. We ended up using two picnic benches with me seated towards our table using the opposite bench. Also, Great Burn should probably update their shades. We were there around 8 pm, the hour of last call for breweries in Montana, and the sun was aimed directly at everyone seated on the patio, overpowering their current shades. A two year old was providing entertainment for the evening. He was moving between the indoors and out, spouting out his favorite phrase "Love ya, baby!" to anyone who made eye contact. His only problem was that he had only learned how to push doors open, unable to reach a door handle to pull or confused as to why all doors didn't push. We made a stop here on a very hot summer day while on a road trip. They have a covered patio / deck and allowed our dog to sit out there with us - this is a huge plus for us and gives an establishment an extra kudos in my book.... since we travel with a dog we are always in search of places that will accompany us, as we can not leave him in the car on hot days. They gave us a bowl of water for him too! We enjoyed a taster tray and then shared a pint..... if I recall correctly the coconut porter was our favorite! Nice welcoming atmosphere and the beers are good too...... give it a try - you will like it! read more

They just opened up, so I have to give them a little bit of a break. They did a very nice job on the building and the beer was actually pretty good. However, the service was painfully slow and to make it worse we didn't even get acknowledged by the staff for pushing 10 minutes. Now, if it had been crazy busy or only 1 person working I could let it slide. The problem is that it wasn't very busy and it appeared there were 4 people working, 2 gals inparticular spent most of the time talking to each other and actually getting in the way of the one guy who was actually trying to pour some beers. If he hadn't been extremely apologetic when he waited on us about the service this would be a 3, or maybe even a 2 because of the poor service. read more

Tied with Imagine Nation for the BEST BREWERY IN MISSOULA!! The edge goest to Great Burn, however, because WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD can you get a TOP NOTCH IPA for THREE DOLLARS?!?!? Yes, that's right, $3 smackeroos! Fantasy land, that's where! Did I die and go to heaven? (Some of their beers are a whopping $4) Awesome atmosphere, very friendly, helpful staff, and unlike Draught Works, GOOD BEER and NOT packed to the gills, elbow to elbow, with a long line to get a beer! This place is phenomenal! Indoor, outdoor, upstairs, downstairs seating, wood-grain everywhere. This is my kind of place. And finally a brewery in "southern" Missoula, right behind Jakers. Don't drive, just ride your bike down the Bitterroot Extension (or whatever it is called) and don't stress about maxing out your 48oz allotment! My only SUGGESTION FOR THE OWNERS: Put a sandwich board on Brooks stating "BREWERY" with an arrow, because you are losing potential customers who would have to crane their heads 90 degrees while driving 45mph on Brooks to even notice your sign. Lots of folks like me slam on the brakes, run over sidewalks and old ladies to get to places like this when we're in a new town! BRAVO!! My favorite neighborhood brewery in Missoula. Hands down. All their beers are good. Some are great. My favs include the Coconut Porter, Great Burn IPA, Green Tea IPA and Belgian Sour. Can be busy but never uncomfortably packed. Lots of regulars. Ping pong! Patio! Food trucks! Chill, fun bar staff. This spot was on the list of breweries in Missoula to hit as we are craft brewery fans. Upon entering we were hit with the smell of bleach. The look of the interior was pretty sterile and predictable. Sorry Great Burn but we couldn't even stay to try your beers. This place is for beer lovers only. But if you are a beer lover then this is the place for you. There's seven or so beers, and only two have an alcohol content below 6%. But there's some really tasty crafts! The Belgian IPA is surprisingly balanced and quote tasty for an IPA, while the Imperial Red, at 8.4% and 50 IBU, is a strong, manly brew. Service is quick and informative, and they'll wait on you at a table if you choose not to sit at the bar. There's a small selection of snacks if you're hungry. There's a neat upper level that overlooks the entire area. The only small downside is that it can get quite loud at times, but this is mainly due to the construction of the building. I will stop there every time I'm in Missoula. Out of the breweries I've visited in Missoula over the years (Big Sky, Kettlehouse, Bayern, Lolo Peak, Tamarack, Great Burn) - Great Burn makes the best beer, IMO. There are quite a few excellent craft breweries in Missoula (and all of Montana!) but this is our neighborhood place - and they make you feel that way. The beer, of course, is terrific. Their Smoke Chaser Porter is a favorite of mine, but there's something for everyone. You can hang out at the picnic tables outside, play a board game indoors or show up Thursday to wind down after work and enjoy dinner from the visiting food truck. Whether they're open or closed, enjoy a beautiful view of the Blue Mountains through the roll-up clear garage doors. If there are any DD's, kids or non-drinkers with you, be sure to ask for their excellent house-made root beer, lemon-lime or whatever they have on tap. It's always excellent. So Great Burn Brewing is one of the new breweries in town and they know how to brew beer. Their location is awkward for us downtowners but worth the drive if you have reasonable self control or a dd. All of their beers that I have tried are amazing. I especially enjoyed their pumpkin ale and I don't normally go for flavored beers. The Great Burn name pays homage to a very significant historical event for our area that is frequently overlooked. The atmosphere is super comfortable and gives the impression that they want you to be comfortable however they are in the business of making great beer not selling franchises. If you want that go to Lolo brewing or Tamarack. A very nice family own this place. You should check them out. read more

REALLY excellent beer! Ordered the Nitro Oatmeal and love it. The atmosphere is great, especially if they have the doors to the patio open. Excellent, quick service. You know, as fast as a beer can pour. My only wish was that there had a little more choices for food. Chips and salsa, meat and cheese, and that was pretty much it. This is my absolute favorite brewery in and around Missoula. Their beer is delicious (I would highly recommend Smoke Chaser Porter for a flagship brew and Tie-one-on Coconut Brown Ale for a specialty), the atmosphere is open and welcoming, and it's just a mellow friendly place to visit. On top of that, it's great to have a brewery on the south side of town. I would highly recommend Great Burn if you're looking for a place to relax after work or meet friends on the weekends. read more
