I live in Door County and have been searching for a reasonably priced mechanic who will work on my car without finding ways to inflate what I need for service. My first trip to Kevin's was exactly right. They completed my oil change and fluid check. I had a rattling sound in my car that they quickly diagnosed as nothing more than bad tires- which I suspected/hoped. With a rattling there is the opportunity for an unscrupulous mechanic to make up some additional problems to inflate your service and bill. Kevin's did not do that. They were very straight forward. They gave me four options for replacing the tires and sent me away to think about it- no pressure. I will be replacing the tires on my next trip to Sturgeon Bay and as a bonus, I will get free tire rotations for the life of the tires! 04/19/21 - I was up in Baileys Harbor 04/18/21 in Door County WI when my check engine light went on. The problem is I live in Chicago and didn't feel comfortable taking the 3 1/2 hour trip back w/my car in that condition so I had my car towed 22 miles to Sturgeon Bay to Kevin's Automotive by DC Automotive. Even though Kevin's had a backlog of work they took my car first knowing that I had to make a 3 1/2hr trip back to Chicago which was really appreciated. Kevin's opens @ 8am. I had to pick up my brothers wife in door County I drove about eight hours round-trip so I could pick up my sister-in-law while my brother was getting his car repaired. I had to drive my sister to very important appointment the following day so my brother had to stay overnight the shop was closed on Sunday so he emailed them and he had to stay over at a bed-and-breakfast hoping that it won't be too expensive or he would need to order special parts when he was having his breakfast they called and told him his car was ready that they did a high priority just so he could get in and out so if you're ever in door County this is a place to go customer service was great and he got away with a lotThen he was planning on spending. Kevin to the Rescue! We were traveling from Bailey's Harbor back to Soldiers Grove, WI (another 4 hours to go) and had stopped for lunch at the Door County Fire Company. When we came back out, the car would not start. I did my best to trouble shoot but the indicator insisted the car was in reverse when the shifter was obviously locked in park. My wife asked the bartender if there was a mechanic nearby and he recommended Kevin's automotive. We called Kevin's automotive and Kevin got on the phone to discuss symptoms and solutions. We could not exactly diagnose it over the phone so he came out personally and helped us get it started and over to his shop! We just managed to time it right as there was a cancellation that exact hour and he got us in, found the problem, proposed 2 solutions and got us back on the road in less than an hour. The staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful and spoke with our 9 year old and ooohed and aaahed over his fossil collection while we waited. It was the least stressful "stranded by a car" experience we have ever "endured". We left smiling and they did not charge anywhere near what we would have been willing to pay to get back on the road. My favorite mechanic shop out of all the places I've lived (military family so we move A LOT). We've been using them for about 3 or 4 years and have always been very happy with them. The prices are reasonable, they always are happy to provide estimates, and especially now with this whole coronavirus thing, they are still taking care of their customers when we have a car issue - problem solving to get me going again despite the weird obstacles we are all working with right now. We were on vacation in Door county from Illinois. Two days prior to leaving we had to have a tire replaced after a minor mishap. On the day we were heading home we discovered an alignment problem with our vehicle. We did not feel comfortable driving over 200 miles without having this addressed. We called several places and they were unable to help us until the following week We called Kevin and he was able to get us in within an hour and back on the road within another hour, tires aligned. This shop is formerly known as Schmelzer, but the head mechanic, Kevin, bought it from the previous owner in the summer of 2011. I had a problem of a leaky transmission on a Jaguar and one forward gear working, and was afraid to drop if off at a dealer for fear of getting a price that would be thousands of dollars. So I stopped by Kevin's Automotive because it is centrally located in Sturgeon Bay and is walking distance to my office. I asked the owner if he ever worked on Jaguar cars and he said he did, that he had recently done some work on a Jag earlier that week. I showed him the problem and he said he would see what could be done. A couple hours later he called me to tell me what the problem was and how he temporarily fixed it, and that all the gears work again, but that the transmission pan still leaked. Being the honest guy he is, he told me it would be cheaper for me if I were to order the part off the internet, than having him get it from the Jaguar dealership. Just bring in the part & gasket and he would install it. I did just that -- I found the replacement part online and a week later he installed it and everything works as good as new. Kevin's Automotive gets a five-star rating for the honesty and fair prices they offer. The service here was wonderful. I had a car repair problem while on vacation. I emailed Kevin Wednesday night and he called me back at 8:00 am the next morning. A new part was not available within 48 hours, so Kevin got on the phone and found me a used part. When that company could not do the install, I brought it back to Kevin and my car was ready in 20 minutes and for much less money than I expected. Ethical, kind, and highly efficient: auto repair service does not get any better than this. I'm afraid Kevin made next to nothing on this repair, but he sure made my day. Just returned from a weeks vacation to Door County and while there our alternator failed on Washington Island. Pushing the vehicle on to the ferry we made it to the mainland. We contacted numerous service stations with no success until we called Kevin's Auto . . even though they were completely booked and short of help for the week, they fit us in and fixed our car by making a special effort to help us out. I called to schedule an appointment with this repair shop in hopes of finding something closer to home for car repairs instead of driving all the way to Green Bay (where I usually take my car). I was given an appointment for the following week and at no time during the initial call was I informed of a charge. Took the car in to get it looked at and was surprised when the receptionist wrote up a bill and told me of charges just to put my car up in the air. There were at least 2 occasions I should have been notified of the charge I would be incurring for the visit. I told the receptionist I was not aware of charges and she told me that the amount I paid was nothing compared to places in Green Bay that can charge upwards of $85...I have never experienced those charges in Green Bay, nor had I at any of the other local garages. It is important to be straightforward and upfront with your customers, especially after they tell you they may want to become a regular client. If I wasnt notified of a charge to look at the car, I would be worried to take my car there for a repair and find that I was charged more for a repair. Wont be back - read more

I recently went to Kevin's Auto; the previous owner Schmelzer's Auto. Kevin seems to be a really nice guy and after reading the previous review he also sounds like an honest guy. I bought a battery there a little over a year ago; it was under a 3 year warranty and Kevin put in a new battery for me without any charge. I will be taking my car there from now on when the car needs servicing. I need to bring the car by Kevin's Auto Monday; my car is making a very loud noise hope it is just a muffler problem. read more
