The Worst Business Owner I've Ever Worked With First, I want to mention that I am also a business owner with 15 years of experience, so I understand the challenges of running a business. That said, Markus at Liaison is the worst business owner I've ever had the misfortune of working with. I first contacted Liaison in September 2021 and received a top-end quote of $99,646. I signed the contract expecting work to begin within a month. However, seemingly because Markus took on every project he could get, my project was delayed until February 2022. Then, when work was supposed to start, they said they forgot to get the permit, pushing the project back again to March 2022 - a full 6 months after I signed the contract. The project finally ended, unfinished, in October 2022 - an astonishing 7 months after it began. During this entire time, my yard was torn up with a portable toilet in the front. There was no sense of urgency or efficient project management. I wish the delayed start was the end of my issues with Markus and Liaison, but it was just the beginning of the worst contracting experience of my life. Once the project finally started, I was informed that Sean, the project manager I originally met with, had quit. I was left without a project manager for weeks while the subcontractors tried to figure things out on their own. I had only met Markus in person for 10-15 minutes when he came to tell me Sean left. The project began with demolition and trenching. The trenching bill came in at exactly the high end of the original quote, even though it was supposed to be based on hours worked. It became clear that hours weren't being tracked in detail and Markus planned to simply bill the maximum for each line item. The original quote only included a line for "Retrofit existing - Time and material at $85 pr. hr." Yet I was billed $7,200 for trenching alone, not even the irrigation retrofit. No change order was ever made for this major scope increase. Next was the hot tub pad and decking, which ended up costing nearly $50,000. Issues included: - The deck was finished before the gas line was hooked up, requiring boards to be pulled up - The deck finish needed to be redone by a third party - The removable stairs to access the hot tub panel were misaligned and wobbly Furthermore, despite repeatedly communicating our desire for a clover lawn, Markus' crew showed up one day and added gravel, compacting it down because they thought we wanted grass turf. This not only added cost but required completely tearing up the yard later because they didn't fully remove the gravel, leaving the soil too compact for growth. When it came time for planting, the crew brought about 20% of the wrong plants. After I rearranged many of them into the correct layout, we later discovered that some still weren't the ones we originally selected. Many aspects of the project were changed without any negotiation. When I brought this up, I was told that I had made the changes myself, without any evidence or even an in-person conversation. This is the result of a detached business owner who has taken on too many contracts, a lack of project management, poor business organization, and/or blatant dishonesty. After more than a year, $125,000 paid, going through two project managers who did next to nothing, a budget overrun of nearly 30%, much of the original plan scrapped, and having to redo a lot of the work ourselves, I was done with this disorganized company. The only positive was working with Ernie, the electrical/gas subcontractor, who demonstrated integrity, communication, respect, and quality work. I strongly encourage anyone considering a project larger than simple decking or fencing to find a different contractor. Even for those, I'd advise finding someone more organized and honest to work with than Liaison. The experience was so bad, I am likely considering a lawsuit against Markus and Liaison. read more

This review is overdue. This is one of the companies I got the chance to work with to fix a drainage overflow in our front patio. After doing some research Liaison landscapes gave me the best solution and I am overly happy with the results. Working through the proposal with Chrissy and Markus was incredibly easy and the work is absolutely chef's kiss. I wish I had taken pictures of before and after for our patio but it truly looks amazing. They took out our current patio pavers and dug onto the dirt, placed 4 dry well barrels in place and put the same exact patio pavers on top. With the addition of having shaped/cut the pavers to fit the catch basin. A lot of people walk by and have no clue that it no longer overflows. It has been a nightmare prior to the drainage system since we always had to take the sump pump during rainy days. Did I mention that the drainage system was finished within 3 days? Our continous nightmare that had been going for years and years was fixed in 3 days! Who would have thought? I recently had to find a contractor to repair the sidewalk in front of my house due to inspection requirements from my home insurance company. I was given strict parameters and a timeline for the repair. WOW is all I can say. I was so impressed with Sean and Octavio on this massive undertaking. I shopped around for quite some time and hadn't been able to find a company that was able to handle all the various complexities of hardscape, drainage, wood construction and planting that I was looking for in this backyard remodel until Liaison. They were so professional and Sean was extremely patient working around my 100+ revisions as the project evolved. He stayed on time and in budget which I have found to be a huge rarity. As you can see in the before pictures, our yard needed A LOT of work to reconstruct the retaining wall, flatten land next to the garage to add another parking strip, add a platform for the hot tub, add drainage and repair broken pipes throughout, add automatic irrigation, build custom wooden benches and under deck lattice. This project was a monster and Sean and Octavio handled it with grace. I really appreciated how they came up with solves along the way when we hit roadblocks (built-in bench was there idea) and created useable spaces at every corner of the complicated hillside property. We couldn't be happier with our backyard work. From a barren very steep incline to a beautiful garden with various fruit trees and small shrubs that lead you down to the platform at the bottom where the kiddos can play in their new play yard and the adults get their own little corner to lounge as well. All extremely well light as well as irrigation and drainage lines setup so that everything can be the done the right way. Making small tweaks and changes along the way to suit our taste we had no issues getting things to look the way we wanted. The workmanship is top notch and always looking to make things more useful like moving our irrigation valves from the side of the house to the back so they could all stay together and out of the way. Liaison Landscapes did an incredible job with the complete re-design and construction of both our front and rear yard. As an interior designer myself, I have been through many projects and worked with a ton of contractors, and I have to say that the entire team at Liaison was an absolute pleasure to work with. We began the process with Elliot, their (all-star) designer and he created a beautiful plan which we felt represented all of our 'must haves' and even our 'nice to haves'. He was incredibly helpful in nailing down details like materials selections, finishes, plant palette, landscape lighting, and even finding and artificial turf that looks so real! We then worked with Octavio, one of their crew leaders who implemented the design with excellent craftsmanship, great communication, and no delays in the schedule. We had a great experience working with Sean, his site manager Luis, and the entire crew at Liaison. As one other reviewer mentioned, I too was wondering who Sean was after all of the initial reviews mentioned Markus, but Sean is great. He came out a few months ago (pre-COVID) to talk through some general concepts that my wife and I were looking to do with our yard, as well as suggest various options to work with our budget. After inundating Sean with questions via email, we paid a deposit to get a full CAD drawing done as our project was hardscape and not just plants. Sean was then open to our suggestions and revisions on said drawing and answered, again, more questions than I'd want to answer myself. (Thanks, Sean!) Work began right after the COVID restrictions for outdoor companies lifted in early May. There were various parts of the Liaison crew specializing in different areas. We had a fantastic team that built our fence and a custom box for our utility meter (Thanks, Rene!) as well as others handling stones, debris removal, planting, irrigation, etc. Everything was done on time, and any concerns I had throughout were addressed by Sean or Luis on an ongoing basis. They also have 90 day guarantees post install for plants and offer an optional maintenance service going forward. Writing this review as I sit on my beautiful deck in my amazing backyard which was recently completely redone by Liaison. Markus and his crew (Elvis) were great to work with and we couldn't be happier. Our project was pretty intensive - we had the typical small SF city lot: sloping as we are on a hill, concrete, old fences and failing retaining walls. We wanted to make it usable, low maintenance, utilizing every inch of the space and of course, nice to look at. Not without its challenges, but with each new "curveball" thrown at us during the project, we were able to work with Markus and Elvis to come up with a solution that met our needs and didn't slow the project down. Besides having a great working relationship, the quality of work is top notch. We've had a ton of compliments and are definitely the envy of all our neighbors. Even after the project has finished, Markus has been available for follow up questions or minor adjustments we wanted to make. Decided to use the almighty google to find reputable landscape designers. That led to research here on Yelp. Liaison was the best rated, A customer review photo had exactly what I was looking for. I messaged them looking for a quote, yelp recommended I send the same message to multiple other paid advertisers. Response time "one day" .... try 3 for an eventual automated response to fill out a project form. EVERY other outfit replied same day. Not looking good for Liaison. Following up with Liaison (my initial choice) via phone went unanswered, instead I received an automated text once I hung up, telling me to fill out their project form that I'd already filled out once via there website. Filled it out a second time. That was a week ago. Still no response. Yelp, phone, email... 0 for 3 for an actual follow ups. Would give 0 stars for 0 communication. read more

Markus oversaw the project with Juan and Miguel working at my place on a day to day basis. There are several things which really set them apart: - They can work with SF backyards! I have a very steep backyard in San Francisco (probably around a 45 degree incline) and most of my neighbors have overgrown backyards since its so cumbersome to do anything with them or super expensive to put in many retaining walls. LIAISON LANDSCAPE REVIEW: Liaison Landscapes is without a doubt, the best-in-class landscaper and the most qualified group of experts in the field. Their tireless effort and their calculated attention to detail are second to none. Day after day, they worked hard and never cut a single corner to make our backyard project a reality. They have an exceptional work ethic and they went above and beyond numerous times in order to make our project perfect. The whole experience was simply exceptional from start to finish and the integrity and quality of the work is nothing short of incredible. Some context: My wife and I had planned a very specific backyard project for some time but it continued to slip due to the pandemic. But when we thought all was lost, we finally got around to engaging with Liaison Landscapers and everything fell perfectly into its place. Thank god for that. Markus was very professional, thoughtful, and most importantly, easy to converse with. My most favorite aspect of working with him was that he was just so incredibly responsive from the start and he didn't overcomplicate or try to sell you on needless features. In fact, the very first impression that I had was when he responded to my request for a quote and literally came out the next day to walk me through it. I knew then and there that he and Liaison Landscapes was the company we wanted to go with. We didn't wait to lock in a contract within the next few days. Providing an update on our experience ~8 months later I am pretty disappointed in the follow up and customer service we experienced after the work was done. We had a few plants die on us, which could have been the result of many things (i.e. under/over watering, poor choice for climate, not enough sun, etc). I tried to contact Markus on at least 5 different occasions via text to come check it out and help us get some replacement plants, but he never followed through. We had a fig tree planted as well, which was planted less than a foot away from the house behind us. Given the landscaping experience these guys have, I'm pretty upset that they didn't think of how big it would get in a few years, and we will likely have to move it. Another succulent was planted in a tight space between 2 walls, thus not getting any sunlight, and it died within 2 months. It seems like they rushed through our job and didn't plan out the locations of each plant very well prior to putting in the ground. read more

I contacted several landscaping services and they were not interested in taking care of my small job. I then contacted Liaison Landscaping and spoke with Markus. He immediately told me Liaison would take care of the front of my house. I needed to have an ugly yucca stump removed; it was about 3 ft. in diameter, sticking up about 5 inches from my driveway, in the corner formed by my house and the left side of the front steps. I had a vague idea of what I wanted the finished product to look like but needed guidance from Markus to finalize the plans. He quickly made good suggestions, all of which I accepted. His crew ground the yucca stump down and built a concrete box in the corner, applied stucco and painted it to match my house and planted a Red Dragon maple in the planter box. Such an improvement! It looks like the planter box has always been there. In addition I had a rectangular space on the right side of the outside stairwell, long and narrow, right next to my neighbor's short wall. Markus suggested closing the opening to the sidewalk with cement/stucco, paint it to match the house, and fill in the rectangular area with six Aeoniums. Once again, what a beautiful difference this made. In any of my dealings with Markus and his crew they were responsive to my needs and respectful of taking good care of everything. His crew worked very hard and they clearly had good camaraderie with one another. I cannot stress enough their customer service was top-notch. Lots of businesses promise good customer service, but Liaison delivered in this area, also. I enjoyed working with Markus and appreciated the hard work his crew did to transform the front of my house. What a beautiful job they all did. He told me to email him with exactly what I wanted. I spent almost an hour drafting a very detailed email of our backyard project. They never responded. My wife and I found Markus and his business after several months of reviewing, receiving quotes from, and talking directly with various other landscapers all around the Bay Area. The mission: give our backyard a complete renovation, effectively gutting the entire space to convert it into a social area that would provide a venue for hosting parties, relaxing, and giving our daughter a little patch of grass to play in and call her own. The previous owners of our home were real greenthumbs, as evidenced by the yard we inherited as part of buying our home. Garden beds everywhere and very nice plants and bushes surrounded by mulch. It was very nice... for awhile. However, as our daughter got older and our jobs kept us further and further away from being able to maintain the yard, our priorities changed. Our needs changed. Enter Markus, Ricardo, and his team of truly incredible landscapers. Though he came into our hunt for a contractor late in the game, he was the only one to truly offer a vision for our yard that all but exactly matched what we were looking for - without us telling him what we wanted. The method by which he got acquainted with our yard - capturing the dimensions with his footsteps - translated into a blueprint which really captured what we could do with the space we had. About a week passed before we received our first quote. Of all the contractors we received quotes from, the one from Liaison Landscapes was by far the most professional by a landslide, with detailed line items for each element of the project broken down. The costs of each portion of the work were shared in a way that really impressed us, especially since my wife and I are pretty detail-oriented people. Though his final price came in higher than some other quotes, we ultimately chose Liaison Landscapes because we simply felt the most comfortable with them. It's the little details that mattered. Markus clearly understood what we wanted and, while he provided his own input into some design decisions, was great at executing based on our wants and needs. All his trucks had his company logo stamped on them; he employed his own crew versus a contractor subcontracting parts of the job, something I greatly appreciated. He visited our home almost daily to inspect the work done on the yard after the project began. He was easily accessible via phone and email, with his responding to our messages within hours - if not minutes - of receiving them. The backyard renovation project ran a few days longer than originally planned and did end up costing more than was originally scoped (entirely on my wife and I as we wanted to swap out decomposed granite for travertine tiles in what would be the social area), but HOLY CRAP the results speak for themselves.
